Horizon’s Social Justice Environmental Task Force Supports the Blocking of the Keystone XL Pipeline! Aly Tharp, Co-chair of the Task Force, provided a powerful and detailed presentation on Tuesday explaining tar sands production, transportation infrastructure and risks, environmental impacts, and grassroots resistance movements On Tuesday evening, March 19th, the Horizon Environmental Task Force hosted an information session in our Fellowship Hall about what tar sands are and how the pipeline about to be built through Texas to carry those tar sands will negatively affect our ecosystems, our air and water, public health and our lives--- not to mention how land owners’ rights are being ignored right now by Texas officials allowing a foreign owned company, TransCanada, to exercise eminent domain in order to obtain clearances for preparing easements for the “crude oil” pipelines. Tar sands sludge filled with toxic chemicals to make it move through pipes is not crude oil and is much more dangerous, especially to surface waterways and aquifers, when spilled through pipeline leaks. Aly Tharp, Co-chair of the Task Force, provided a powerful and detailed presentation explaining tar sands production, transportation infrastructure and risks, environmental impacts, and grassroots resistance movements. The group of 26 people at the session, many of whom were welcomed to Horizon for their first visit, then made signs to be carried by those who are joining a non-violent protest on Friday, March 22nd, in front of John Hancock Life Insurance to protest the affront to public health posed by their holding more than 3-million stock shares in TransCanada. The EFTF will be rallying around Williams Square in Las Colinas with members of Move-On Dallas, the local Sierra Club, Downwinders at Risk, Tar Sands Blockade--- in solidarity with protest groups over 50 organizations across the continent demonstrating opposition during this National Week of Action Against Tar Sands Profiteers in over 30 events. When asked to comment about her visit on Wednesday to the Dallas offices of Texas Senators Ted Kruz and John Cornyn the following morning, Aly said that, “Ted Cruz believes from the phone calls he receives that 90% of his constituents are proponents of the KXL Northern Segment. We need to change that—and tell him that he needs to keep a closer eye on tar sands pipeline regulation to protect his constituents at home from the risks of the Enbridge Seaway line.” The work of Horizon’s Social Justice Environmental Task Force is driven by their mission to actively uphold Unitarian Universalism’s 7th principle – to respect the interdependent web of all existence of which we are apart. In other words, we promote actively caring for the earth. If you would like to join the email list and learn about and take part in other events they are planning concerning recycling, land preservation, water usage, and other environmental causes, email Aly Tharp at alytharp@riseup.net. We welcome your ideas and energy!

Be a Horizon Delegate to the 2013 UU General Assembly! JuLane * president@horizonuu.org

Every year the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly is held in June. This year’s assembly is in Louisville, KY, June 19 – 23rd. Thousands of UU’s from across the country assemble to learn together, worship together and to hold the annual business meeting of our denomination – a meeting that is open to all. Online, go to http://www.uua.org/ga/program/index.shtml to find out more about this year’s GA and how to register for attending in person or virtually. It’s thrilling to actually attend and be a part of this exciting event! However, if time and budget prevent you from actually being there, GA is transforming into a hybrid meeting incorporating off-site delegate participation, live streaming of events, and social media to create an interactive experience for live and remote attendees. Go online to http://www.uua.org/ga/virtual/175228.shtml to find out how you can participate off-site. And think about representing Horizon by being a GA Delegate! Our congregation is certified to have 6 lay member delegates to take part in the voting on UUA staff positions, Bylaw amendments, statements of conscience and other issues vital to our denomination. Go to http://www.uua.org/documents/gaoffice/tentativeag enda.pdf to learn about this year’s business agenda and see the proposed statements and amendments presented this year for vote. If you would like to be one of our six GA Delegates, who are approved each year by your Board of Trustees, please let us know by contacting your President of the Board, Judith Lane, at president@horizonuu.org. We have your packet waiting for you!

PASTORAL CARE NEWS

By Marianna Seaton, Director of Lay Ministry

Take courage friends. The way is often hard, The path is never clear, And the stakes are very high. Take courage, For deep down, There is another truth: You are not alone. ~ Wayne B. Arnason

Let us join together in sending love and healing prayers to Gordon Roe, who is recuperating well from open-heart surgery and Tinker Goggins who is at home recovering from foot surgery. We also hold in our hearts Susan Powell and Leland Mebine who have been mostly home bound. Cards and well wishes welcome. Big cheers to Bobbi Myers who is getting along well after back surgery, and to Marie Hansen who is strong and back singing in the choir after her heart attack. We also extend our best wishes to Ruth Trudeau as she heals from a broken collarbone. As always, we hold dear those struggling to balance the care of their families with the care of their parents and extended family, those looking for sustainable employment, the forgotten or abused, and those who are bearing their burdens in silence. Our Pastoral Caregivers work with the Minister, the Director of Lay Ministry and the Neighborhood Groups in a spirit of cooperation to cherish and care for the members of our congregation. If you or your loved ones are in need of a sympathetic ear, the Pastoral Caregivers are available. Call Rev. Dennis Hamilton at 972-519-8187, or Marianna Seaton, Director of Lay Ministry at 972743-1599 or e-mail dhamilton@uuma.org to reach Dennis or dlm@horizonuu.org to reach Marianna.

Reproductive Justice and HUUC Reproductive Justice is the new 3 year social justice study for the UUA. It is a broad topic encompassing  Reproductive health – accessibility to health care, research, services and facilities  Reproductive rights –protection of a woman’s legal rights to reproductive health care services, particularly abortion  Reproductive justice – raising children in safe and health environments, planned and healthy pregnancies, ending of unwanted pregnancies and expression of sexuality. It does not isolate or pit important social issues against each other, rather it works to promote these rights across many areas:       

reproductive choice; eradication of violence against women; comprehensive sex education; discrimination based on race and sexual orientation; economic justice; environmental justice; and immigration justice.

The Justice Task Force is creating a team to work on reproductive justice. Join us by contacting Mary Morris at mmorris143@verizon.net.

Items required: Each participant will be ask to bring something related to the activity and something for the pantry. It is important that every participant brings the required items. Without those items we not be able to do the activity. Parent Information: One parent is required for every two children. The parent needs to be engaged in the activity and instruct their own child. Metrocrest volunteers will oversee the activity and instruct children, but it will be the parents’ responsibility to instruct their own child. Group Information: This opportunity is geared towards families, but groups will be allowed under special circumstances. Please email nnewkham@metrocrestsocialservices.org for more information.

FUTURE SUNDAYS

A wise man once wrote: “Small miracles occur at church every Sunday, and do not depend on the sermon.” Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, on Sundays at 10:30AM.

March 2013 Theme: “Silence, the Practice of Listening” _________________________________________________

March 24 * “Silence of the Lamb” - Rev. Hamilton On Palm Sunday we recall Jesus standing before his accusers in silence. His only power was in passive resistance, though he knew well the price. Each day people who have no voice, who have no power are exploited, abused and killed. Out of that silence comes the voice of the prophet, speaking out for justice, for kindness and compassion in the face of cruelty. What message did Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Francis David and Katherine Weigel have for the silenced ones? Come to the Seder this evening at 6 PM. This traditional Jewish Passover service is fun and meaningful for all ages. Families like it because children are featured in the readings. This is a potluck supper. Look to the website for suggestions. All are welcome.

________________________________________________________________

March 31 Easter “You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down” - Rev. Hamilton In our faith the Resurrection is not a literal or a supernatural one. Jesus died just as thoroughly as the two thieves on either side of him. Yet his teachings and his example influence billions of people every day. I think of Nelson Mandela walking away from Robin Island, Aung San Suu Kyi emerging from fifteen years of house arrest in Burma. And of course, the martyrs who emerged from death to live again in the hearts of humanity. The Choir sings Mozart’s “Lachrymosa” and a “Hallelujah” just for the joy of it.
