March 16 “Planting Wild Flowers” - Rev. Dennis Hamilton Lady Bird Johnson softened the landscape of Texas by planting millions of wild flowers. She said, “Where flowers bloom, so does hope.” Others have planted weeds among the flowers. What do we do to combat the hatred, the blame and hypocrisy? How do we weed our garden, till the soil and plant seeds of hope, seeds of justice, and seeds of happiness? How do we do it without losing our own souls in the process?
March 23, “Blooming Where You Are Planted” - Mary Kay Hamilton We are not always where we expected or wanted to be. But wherever we are there is opportunity. I never thought I would learn to love being in Texas, but the closer I am to leaving, the more I discover I have deeper roots here than I imagined. Horizon has been fertile ground for me to grow and bloom.

Come “Explore Horizon” with Us! For those who are visiting and want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, a series of classes may answer your questions.
On Saturday, March 22nd, “How Do U Fit into UU?” will be presented by members of the Membership Committee and other Horizon leaders. It starts at 10:30 AM and runs until 2:30 PM. Hear about the history of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings we have. We’ll also cover the expectations of membership. A light lunch will be served during class, which will be held in the church library.
On Sunday, March 23rd, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will lead “New to UU” from 12:30-2:30. Light lunch served. Learn about the history and structure and uniqueness of Unitarian Universalism. Hear about our Seven Principles that we strive to understand and integrate into our lives. This class will be in the Fellowship Hall after the Sunday service.
On Sunday, April 6th, Reverend Hamilton will conduct a New Member Sunday where anyone wanting to join Horizon may do so at that time. Contact him at revdennishamilton@mac.com if you would like to join.

Share the Plate for Sunday 16 MAR 2014 Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service.
The Share the Plate collection on Sunday March 16 will be for the Texas Land Conservancy. The Texas Land Conservancy (TLC) is a non-governmental, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of land in Texas. In essence, we are in the business of protecting natural areas from the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly-planned development. Land conserved by TLC will be protected forever from becoming a subdivision, strip mall, or parking lot. We help landowners find an economical, realistic alternative to selling their land to a developer that allows ownership to remain in their hands, but puts the responsibility of conserving the land in ours. Many of these properties are working farms or ranches, while others contain important habitat for wildlife and native plant communities. All of these lands are beautiful examples of Texas’ natural heritage. TLC’s work ensures that economic viability and growth is balanced with what makes us Texan: our rural heritage, our open-spaces, our farms and ranches, our scenic vistas, and our natural resources. Our Vision A diverse and expanding network of protected natural areas throughout Texas supported by a community of Texans who share a commitment to enhancing the quality of life through land conservation. Our Mission The mission of Texas Land Conservancy is to conserve natural areas in Texas and to protect the physical and ecological integrity of their wildlife habitat, native plant communities, and scenic landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations.

Candle Lighters II Every Friday, from 10 am until 2 pm, about 15 people meet in Horizon’s Fellowship Hall in a small group ministry called Candle Lighters. This ministry serves church members and people from the larger community diagnosed with early stage dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Every week for just over one year we have shared our stories and lots of meals, practiced tai chi and yoga, released our inner artists, played games and built deep friendships. With a ratio of about one volunteer for every two members with a diagnosis, it is very hard to tell who is in which category because we are all in this ministry together. It is a joy. We have reached the limits of this first group and have started a waiting list for a second group that will eventually meet at the same time each week. We invite anyone with early stage dementia or mild cognitive impairment, interested in learning more about this group, to contact Marianna Seaton at dlm@horizonuu.org or 972-743-1599. Remember, Candle Lighters is open to members and non-members. Reach out to your friends who might need this ministry. We do not know of any other group offering this kind of intentional community. Care partners are also welcome to contact us for more information.

Middle School Bake Sale Earns $360 for Planned Parenthood
Last Sunday, Horizon middle school students brought in approximately $360 during their social action fundraiser to benefit Planned Parenthood. The bake sale was the culmination of the North Texas UU Congregations (NTUUC) middle school overnight social justice conference called CongrUUity, which took place at Horizon February 21-22nd. The students chose Planned Parenthood as the charity after a long process of brainstorming, discussion and voting. Thank you for supporting our young teens while they learned an important lesson about social justice, and thank you for your support of Planned Parenthood.

Children’s Social Action Sunday March 16th Grades K-8 11 am-12pm
Horizon Religious Education is collaborating with the Social Justice Committee to assemble Easter baskets for the Community Partners of Dallas during the service on Sunday, March 16th. After the Conversation with the Children, children 6-12 years of age will be welcome to join Lauren Daniell and volunteers in the Portable Building to put the baskets together. CPD serves over 2000 abused and neglected children, and Horizon is happy to add a little Easter cheer to their lives.

What is God Like? Last Sunday in Children’s Chapel, Horizon children from Kindergarten-5th grade heard the story of Hosea Ballou and the Mud. The story says that Ballou based his Universalist beliefs on the unconditional love his own father showed him as a youth after coming home covered in mud after playing outside time and time again, even though instructed not to do so. “If my own father can forgive me, why can’t God the Father also forgive my sins?” Ballou thinks in the story. We brainstormed about what we thought God was like, and here are some painting of God (or the Universe, or the Ultimate) that our children made with MUD!

The second installment chronicles those who carried on Servetus’ message after his martyrdom, primarily Faustus Socinus and Georgio Biandrata, and how they carried his message forward to religious liberals in Poland and Transylvania. It documents the influence of Servetus, Socinus, Dávid Ferenc, and various Polish Unitarians on the early English religious liberals such as John Biddle and Thomas Emlyn, and the work of Theophilus Lindsey and Joseph Priestley in forming an organized English Unitarianism. The segment discusses the split between the Arian and Socinian Unitarians in England and mentions the early feminist work of the Unitarian Mary Wollstonecraft, concluding with the emigration of Joseph Priestley from England to America in 1794. “Spirit in Practice” with Helena (Tina) Ulakovic
Tuesday, March 18th 6:00-7:30pm What is a spiritual practice? Do you have one? “Spirit in Practice” is a class designed for those who don’t yet participate in our yoga or Buddhist Sangha groups, or who wish to explore a variety of spirtual practices. This class will help Unitarian Universalists identify their spiritual needs and develop regular disciplines, or practices, of the spirit—practices that help them connect with the Sacred, with other people, and with their inner selves.

(bookclub@horizonuu.org ) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. Sharing of ideas and experiences in nutrition, weight loss, exercise and stress management. Men’s Saturday Support Group (mensgroup@horizonuu.org ) A men’s support group that includes a check-in and informal discussion of men’s issues regarding family, health, workplace, and relationships. Starts at 8AM The 2nd Tuesday Potluck Chalice Circle (secondtuesday@horizonuu.org ) This group meets for food, fellowship, and deepening friendships. They meet in the library 2nd Tuesday of most months at 12 noon. Occasionally we take a field trip instead of having a potluck lunch. Tuesday Wisdom Circle (tuesdaywisdom@horizonuu.org ) A chalice circle that offers a check-in and discussion of a weekly life issue topic selected by a group member. The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) Chalice Circle (wfig@horizonuu.org) Meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. We welcome women of all ages to join us for fun, connection, and growth. We share stories from our lives and discuss topics that help us get to know one another better. Recent programs have included How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every Day, a night of Board Games, and TED talks on the Power of Vulnerability, Connected but Alone, and Body Language.
