May 11, 2014 – Mother’s Day Choir Concert with Director of Music, Stanley Moody, Rev. Dennis Hamilton and the Horizon Choir This year’s concert brings a special beloved guest back to Horizon, David Moran with his hammer dulcimer. We present Malcolm Dalglish’s beautiful Hymnody of the Earth, which is based on Wendel Berry’s poetry. This Appalachian opus brings Berry’s natural theology to life. Not to be missed!
May 18, 2014 – Rev. Hamilton’s Last Stand This is Dennis’ last service with us before he retires after 27 years with Horizon. He will send us on our way with blessings, remembrances and thanks, and maybe even a violin piece. It is his last chance in our Free Pulpit. Who knows what he will say? The choir will lead the congregation in one last “Parting Song,” the song that has ended each choir practice since the beginning.

John Wycliffe, a man anxious for change. Ruth Trudeau will facilitate our class. John Wycliffe asked, “Why may we not write in English the gospel and other things, dedicating the gospel to the edification of man’s soul. We ask: 1. Why were this scholar philosopher’s bones exhumed and burned at the stake…? 2. What did he do to so anger the church? 3. Who were his friends and why did they protect him during hid lifetime? Come to the class to find out more about Wycliffe, discuss answers to our questions and find out what was Wycliffe was so anxious to reform.

Yet another Celebration and Farewell
Horizon is in the midst of a very unusual time… a time that is happy and celebratory, and yet a time filled with the knowing that a separation from special people will happen soon. Lyssa Jenkens came to us in Fall 2012 as a participant in the new TouchPoint model of graduate study and internship being implemented by Meadville-Lombard Theological Seminary in Chicago. Horizon has been very fortunate to have had Lyssa on a half-time basis for two years (½ + ½ = 1 internship!), while she continued studying, writing papers, and attending sessions in Chicago. Experienced in leadership with non-profits and church work (she has served as president of First Unitarian Church of Dallas), Lyssa has been learning the ins and outs of ministry in our growing mid-size congregation. She has been generous with her expertise in planning and organization. Quoting from one of her past newsletter columns: “I love by-laws. And governance. And strategic planning. And organizational change. I don’t know too many ministers who put these items at the top of their list of things to love, but there you are. I also love fund-raising.” Give her a spreadsheet... and she is happy! Already holding a doctorate in Political Economy - Applied Economics, from University of Texas at Dallas, Lyssa will receive her Master of Divinity degree from Meadville on May 18, the very same day as Dennis’s last Sunday with us. Lyssa will return for two more weeks, an extension of her internship so she can preach one more time on June 1. During that final service, the Intern Committee will present Lyssa with a ministerial stole on behalf of the congregation. Traditionally, the stole symbolizes ordination. It is a visible sign that the person wearing it, has been officially recognized as a minister of the denomination. Once Lyssa appears before the UU Ministerial Fellowship Committee in late

fall 2014 and receives preliminary fellowship with the UUA, she will be eligible for ordination by a congregation. You are invited to make a specific contribution, large or small, for this very special intern gift. Please earmark any contribution for the stole as “Intern Gift “on the memo line of a check, or if cash, on an envelope to be put in the offering basket or mailed to the church office at Horizon UU Church, 1641 W. Hebron Parkway, Carrollton, 75010-6334. Also, a special collection basket will be available in Fellowship Hall before and after services in May. Finally, please visit with Lyssa during the farewell reception following the June 1 service. Cake and punch/lemonade/coffee will be served.

When your beliefs and values began to crystallize and started to guide your attitudes, your actions, and the way you approached the rest of your life? On Sunday, please join our ninth grade Coming of Age class to hear what they have learned about themselves and their beliefs in Horizon’s annual Coming of Age Credo Service. The COA service celebrates an individual’s spiritual searching and is an official recognition that our youth have begun in their quest for personal religious truth. The class has worked hard to prepare an amazing church service and you will not want to miss what our young teens have to say!

A Long, Strange Trip The Complete Video Guide to UU History Part IV - Universalism (1600-1860) Two showings: Sunday, May 11 - 12:00-1:30 pm (library) OR Wednesday, May 14 - 7:30-9:00pm (Fellowship Hall) Georges de Benneville - John Murray – Judith Sargent Murray - Hosea Ballou After finishing the last segment of Part III, Part IV documents the development of Universalism through the early German and English pietists such as Jakob BÜhme and Jane Leade, and 18th century English ministers such as George Whitfield, James Relly, Georges de Benneville, and John Murray. It chronicles the emigration of de Benneville and Murray to America and their roles in the formation of an organized Universalist religion. It tells the story of the Thomas Potter incident and the role Judith Sargent Murray played in the movement. It tracks the theological development of the movement through Murray, Elhanan Winchester, and Hosea Ballou. It discusses the unprecedented explosion of Universalist churches across America during the first half of the 19th century, and why the movement began its precipitous decline after the death of Hosea Ballou.

Share the Plate Collection for May 18. The collection on Sunday May 18 will be to benefit Room to Read.
We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. To achieve this goal, we focus on two areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in education. We work in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.

(bookclub@horizonuu.org ) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice.
