Labo ors of Love e

Horrizon was and continues to be built on laborrs of love. A Around 27 yyears ago, o our founder, Marty Rob binson, a long‐time me ember and active volunteer at Firrst Unitarian Universalist Church in Dallas, outt of love forr her denom mination and her churcch and its vvalues, and, I suspect, o out of a sincere love for keeping bu usy at some ething worthwhile, askked her minnister what she could d do next. Ou ut of that con nversation ccame the be eginning off a new church, our church. How did she maake Horizon n happen? Weell, I heard ffrom anothe er Horizon member, te elling aboutt the first day she show wed up to ccheck out thiss new churcch, that one e task Marty did was to o paint the baseboard ds! Maya Angelou u says “Noth hing will wo ork unless yyou do.” W Watching Maarty, and heearing abou ut all the various things she did yeaars ago from m helping to establish the Dwightt Brown Leaadership Exxperience, ourr Southwestt District UU U leadership developm ment school, to paintin ng baseboards, to lead ding one of Horrizon’s veryy early Boarrds of Truste ees, and ob bserving todday as Martty greets neewcomers tto Horizon and d makes surre there are e visitor pacckets readyy to hand ouut—well, I ccan’t help thinking Maaya Anggelou’s senttiment about work is aa basic tenaant of Marty’s philosop phy of life. And d she’s not alone. The ere are man ny here who o understannd that theiir work, theeir labors off love no matter how large or small, how lenggthy or shorrt in duratioon, whetheer it is one ccontribution n of time and d effort or aa continued d volunteeriing in a teacching or leaadership role, their lab bors are con ntributing to m making Horrizon work. Today we are a healthy, vibrant,, caring and d, as our Inttern Minister writes, a daaring churcch—built on n the bedrock of thoussands of labbors of lovee. Justt look around you next Sunday. IIt’s a very raare Sundayy that Lucy LLockwood isn’t out by the East enttrance doorr to welcom me everyone e to Horizon n. Rain, snoow, ice, cold weather or hot, she is out theere and has been almost every Sunday for arround 15 yeears or morre. She coo ordinates ou ur greeters and d helps new w members who voluntteer for gre eeting to meeet more H Horizon mem mbers and learn more about ou ur church in n their earlyy years. Sm mell the cofffee as you eenter? Janee Roehl and d her Kofffee Krew m make sure itt is made eaarly and strong and lotts of it. Heaar music com ming from tthe san nctuary as yyou enter? That’s the vvolunteer cchoir membbers warmin ng up and ggetting in a last min nute rehearrsal before the service. They mee et every Thursday evening 10 mo onths out off the year to p practice and d learn morre from ourr Music Dire ector, Stanl ey Moody, about creaating a coheesive, creative ensem mble that always enhances our Su unday serviices with po oignant, beautiful mussic. The Cho oir Committtee supportting the mu usic program m is chairedd by volunteeer Deb Freeeman. You u may wand der into the e Fellowship p Hall beforre or after sservices to ffind multiple tables sp porting colo orful signs aand information aboutt upcomingg events. Yoou may meet someonee from the Social Justtice Team w who can siggn you up fo or the fall Crop Walk too help raisee funds for tthe local fo ood banks

who serve those in need in the surrounding community. You may talk with a 9th grader or parent who are holding a bake sale for the Coming of Age 9th grade class to raise funds for the annual COA trip to Boston. All of the people at these tables have spent time coordinating, planning and communicating news about their programs via these weekly Taste of Horizon tables. Our Adult Religious Education class meets early, before the Sunday service, at 9:00 AM in the Horizon library. All of the varied programs are arranged months in advance by Kent and Kay Darwin who volunteer their time to procure class leaders from within and outside Horizon who speak about timely, interesting and inspiring topics. Kent is also on the Board of Trustees, another volunteer group of hard‐working lay leaders who meet each month to oversee the business of the church. There are many small groups called Chalice Circles that meet at various times all week long, a place where people meet regularly for mutual support and encouragement, a place to get to know people at Horizon in a deeper way. The Chalice Circle Council is headed by volunteers Nancy Foreman and Marga Gordon who coordinate, support and encourage the ongoing work of these small groups. Near the entrance to the library is our Bookstore, managed by library volunteer, Ann Pettit, who also heads up our Grounds Committee. Ann wears several hats each week and can be seen making sure our plants and trees get enough water through hot Texas summers, or leading a group of volunteers on a grounds upkeep day. Talk about painting baseboards! These folks come out on a hot Saturday morning to pull weeds, mulch, saw off broken tree limbs. But to watch them work you wouldn’t think it was a work party! They are laughing too much! Maybe Ann’s philosophy of life includes John Cheese’s advice that “If you want creative workers, give them enough time to play.” I really regret that I don’t have time or room to list everyone whose labors of love for Horizon make a difference in our community. But I do want to mention two other groups of people who give of their time and talents every week. The Audio/Visual Team, Jerry and Doug Burns, Ben Marmaduke, Sarah Warren and our new A/V Tech Coordinator, Steve Klarer, keep our equipment in good working order and provide the smooth audio visual enhancements and aids that we are now enjoying during our Sunday services. And the cadre of child and youth Religious Education teachers and advisors care for the heart and soul of Horizon’s future, and the future of Unitarian Universalism. The hours they spend inside and outside of the class hours on Sunday are invaluable to the creation of and planning for the high quality program that teaches our children and youth, and gives them living experience in, our principles and values: the inherent worth and dignity of every person; the justice, equity and compassion that must be present in human relations; the acceptance of one another and the encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregation; the free and responsible search for truth and meaning; the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all; and respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Horizon works, because you work for it and what it stands for.
