Fiscal Year 2012-2013 Ends June 30th While it might seem like the middle of summer, it's actually almost the end of the year. The Horizon fiscal year, that is. That would make this a good time to make sure your 2012-2013 pledge is fully paid, please. The actual year end is June 30, so please try to get caught up by then or as soon thereafter as possible. As is always the case, the end of one year is immediately followed by the start of the next. Time for a New Year's resolution! Resolve to stay current on your 2013-2014 pledge throughout the upcoming year. Thank you for your ongoing support. Horizon depends on it! Jan McDowell Treasurer

Horizon Themes for 2013-2014 ► September

RETURNING

As we return from our summer wanderings to the normal church rhythm, we are invited to think about what we return to: home, companions, church, school…And are there practices that you have neglected? Are there things you will abandon? ► October

HAUNTING

What haunts your life? The dead? Memories? Old experiences? Old beliefs? Resentments? We look for ways to befriend our ghosts. ► November

REAPING

What have you sewn? What have we all sewn, and what will we reap? Have we sewn good seeds/deeds? Have we nurtured them? Karma.

PRESERVING

What is worth preserving? In your life, this church, our nation, the environment? What gifts has this year given you? What will you cherish? What lessons have you learned? ► January

PREPARING

Change comes whether we want it to or not. What will you do with your one wild and crazy life? What will you change? What needs to lie fallow? ► February

STAYING

Often it is easier to change the subject, eat something, watch a show. Staying with the feeling can be difficult. Two dogs meditating. One says, “The hard part is learning to stay.” ► March

PLANTING

What will you invest in this spring? Beans? Soy? Your family? Your soul? What will we be planting in society? Justice? Health? Sanity? ► April

FOOLING

Yes, it matters what we do, but if we take it too seriously, we will spoil the fun. We celebrate the absurdity of life this month. ► May

LEAVING

Everyone leaves eventually. How do we say goodbye? What remains? ► June

THRIVING

After the reception is over and the relatives go home, we pick up our lives and go on. Remember the joy, the hope, and the mission. Thrive.

Come “Explore Horizon” with Us! For those who are visiting and want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, a series of classes may answer your questions. On Saturday, June 15th, “How Do U Fit into UU?” will be presented by members of the Membership Committee and other Horizon leaders. It starts at 10:30 AM and runs until 2:30 PM. Hear about the history of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings we have. We’ll also cover the expectations of membership. A light lunch will be served during class, which will be held in the church library. On Saturday, June 29th, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will lead “New to UU” from 9:00 AM to Noon. Learn about the history and structure and uniqueness of Unitarian Universalism. Hear about our Seven Principles that we strive to understand and integrate into our lives. And get to know our Senior Minister and our Director of Lay Ministry, Marianna Seaton.

On Sunday, June 30th, Reverend Hamilton will conduct a New Member Sunday where anyone wanting to join Horizon may do so at that time. Contact him at srminister@horizonuu.org if you would like to join.

_________________________________ You can enroll in the Exploring Horizon classes by sending an email to membership@horizonuu.org. Or, look for a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center in the church lobby. Please also feel free to send questions to the email address above—we sincerely hope you will join us! _________________________________

A Thank You Note from T.J. Treece

MEDITATION GARDEN PROJECT I would like to thank everyone who volunteered for my Eagle Scout project last Saturday, June 1st for all of your dedication and enthusiasm. This project wasn't easy, but having such a great group of people to help out made it go even better than I expected. Sincerely, T.J. Treece

A note from Cindy Treece: Thank you to those of you who also contributed financially. T.J. wrote you each a personal note, but I want to add thanks from Alan and me. Our hearts have been touched by the gifts and notes of encouragement from family, friends, Scouts and church members! If you did not get a chance to contribute, please feel free to make a gift to Horizon for the garden (it will help us purchase the last two benches).

Share the Plate for Sunday 30 JUN 2013 Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service. This month's collection plate is for THE WATER PROJECT.

Every day in rural communities and poor urban centers throughout sub-Saharan Africa, hundreds of millions of people suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls especially bear the burden of walking miles at a time to gather water from streams and ponds - full of disease that is making them and their families sick. These illnesses and the time lost to fetching water rob entire communities of their futures. Hope is put on hold in over half of the developing world's primary schools without access to water and sanitation. But it doesn't have to be this way. For a small investment, inexpensive and long-lasting water projects can be constructed to serve villages and schools. Wells, dams and rain catchment systems can provide a reliable source of drinking water. Sanitation facilities and hygiene training then help multiply the impact. Communities become far better able to grow themselves out of poverty.

You can help restore hope. Give water and help rescue some of the 440 million school days lost every year to water-related sickness. Put an end to the nearly 1 in 5 deaths under the age of five that occur due to dirty water. The Water Project brings relief to communities around the world who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. Providing access to clean, safe water helps capable and determined people realize the hope they have for their own futures. http://thewaterproject.org/how-to-give-clean-water.php

A Universalist Epiphany facilitated by Jim Sturdivant. Carlton Pearson had it all, pastor of a 6,000-member Pentecostal church, opulent home, fat bank account and happy family. Then, with his kids, he watched a newscast about Somali children starving to death and realized that, being Muslim. All those children would all go to hell. That's when he had an epiphany that sent him to hell -- and back. Come hear his amazing story and the role of Unitarian Universalism played in his salvation.

June 16, 2013
