COM Assisting Board of Trustees
Committee on Ministry The Committee on Ministry (COM) serves the Church by assisting the Board of Trustees to develop and renew the Church’s strategic vision by ensuring an ongoing assessment of the effectiveness of all Church ministries and by facilitating resolution of Church-relationship issues (Article 12A By-Laws). The responsibilities of the COM include meeting with each church ministry and helping each ministry to set goals in line with the strategic plan, vision, and mission of the church. Members of this year’s COM are Peggy Gill, Chair, Jim Yank, Gayle Loeffler, Kim Bolin, and Terri Allison. The COM meets the first Sunday of each Month after church in Room 5. Over the next few weeks, members of the 2013-14 COM will be contacting each ministry to help in the process of goal setting for this year. COM membership is a great resource in helping to identify ways each ministry can positively contribute to the spiritual growth of individual members and the overall mission of Horizon. To facilitate this process, the COM has divided the ministries of the church into 5 areas and assigned a liaison to each area: Spiritual Development (Kim Bolin), Outreach (Gayle Loeffler), Lifespan Faith Development (Terri Allison), Membership and Pastoral Care (Jim Yank), and Administration (Peggy Gill). The COM is an active working-group that is available to any ministry. We welcome your contacts, and will seek to help you reach you goals for the year! com@horizonuu.org

Come Explore Horizon and All It Offers! For those who are visiting or just want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for new members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, a series of classes may be just the right next step. On Saturday, September 21st, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will lead “New to UU” from 9:00 AM to Noon. Learn about the history and structure of Unitarian Universalism. Hear about our self-governance system of polity and the Seven Principles that we strive to understand and integrate into our lives. And, get to know our Senior Minister in an intimate setting! Free childcare will be provided. The class will be in the Fellowship Hall.
On Sunday, September 22nd, “How Do U Fit into UU?” will be presented by Cindy Treece, Chair of the Membership Committee, and other Horizon leaders. It will start at 12:30 PM and runs until 2:30 PM. A light lunch will be provided, as will free childcare. Hear about the history of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings we have. Ask questions about Horizon you have not been able to yet! We’ll also cover the expectations of membership in case you are interested in joining the church. The class will be held in the church library. You can enroll in the Exploring Horizon classes by sending an email to membership @horizonuu.org. Sunday begins the fall semester and a host of new classes are starting for children, youth and adults. Children’s classes begin next Sunday. Here is a list of new classes beginning this week:

Splash Day 2013 is this Sunday, September 8th 10:45am-12 noon
Splash Day is a morning of water fun to kick off the start of the new church year. Children in the nursery up to 7th grade are invited to play in pools and sprinklers, toss water balloons and go down the 17 foot water slide. Our youth in 10-12th grade are welcome to come and help out. Don’t forget to wear clothes that can get wet, a hat and plenty of sunscreen! Adult volunteers are needed to help supervise the children. Lauren is also looking for families to lend the church extra garden hoses, wading pools and other fun water toys. For more information or to volunteer, please email : dlre@horizonuu.org
This Sunday in Children’s and Youth Religious Education – September 8th Nursery and Preschool: Mini Splash Day! Our little UUs will play water games on the playground with Mrs. Becky and parent volunteers. Please send children in clothes that can get wet, a hat and sunscreen. Kindergarten-7th grade: Splash Day! After the water service, we’ll go outside for a morning of fun with water balloons, water cannons, a slip ‘n slides and the giant 17 foot slide. Please wear clothes that can get wet, a hat and sunscreen. Classes begin next Sunday. 8th Grade OWL (Our Whole Lives): OWL students will meet their teachers and their classmates, make a class covenant and talk about what they will learn this year. The OWL classroom is found next to the library. 9th Grade: (COA or Coming of Age) COA students will also meet their new teachers and other class members, create their class covenant and begin their studies of UU history and identity. COA class will meet in room 7. Grades 10-12: Splash Day help. Students in senior high are invited to help out with Splash Day. Volunteers are needed to monitor the slide, help with snow cones, and fill and give out water balloons.

Maps and biblical artifacts needed in Children’s Religious Education With the new church school year quickly approaching children in K-5th grade will be learning about the Bible. Maps and/or replicas of artifacts from the ancient world, especially of the Middle East during Biblical Times, are needed.
Preschool playground task force now forming The Horizon nursery and preschool playground is a lovely space with lots of fun equipment for our little UUs. However some of the equipment has become faded from the Texas sun, but is still in great shape. The pieces can easily be refurbished with a little cleaning and a layer of spray paint. If you can donate an hour or two to spruce up the playhouse or one of the cars, your efforts would be greatly appreciated. To volunteer please contact: dlre@horizonuu.org.

New Classes for Children and Youth are starting Children and youth at Horizon will begin new classes in mid-September. The younger children will focus on the Jewish and Christian roots of Unitarian Universalism while the middle and high school youth will have the chance to do Our Whole Lives, Coming of Age and a variety of curricula at the senior high level. Here is a snapshot of classes by level: Preschool: Celebrating Me and My World Begins September 15 The young UUs in this class will learn through hands-on experience with the wonderful and wide world around them; stories about our faith that teach our history and principles; and play which is the natural expression of the young child's heart and mind. Kindergarten and First Grade: Picture Book Bible Tales and Holidays and Holy Days Begins September 15 Five to seven year olds will explore stories from the Bible as told from a UU point of view and emphasis. They will also celebrate Christian and Jewish holidays throughout the year – UU style! Second and Third Grades: Timeless Themes Begins September 15 Timeless Themes introduces children to religious literature which is central to our culture and our heritage as Unitarian Universalists. The program examines two sets of scriptures: the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible. The primary goal is to retell stories that are often told or referred to in our culture, but from a UU perspective. Fourth and Fifth Grades: Living the Promise Begins September 15 Children ages nine through eleven will delve into the Jewish and Christian texts this year with our Living the Promise program. The foundation of our Unitarian Universalist faith is our covenant with one another, and the history of the Bible is one of making, breaking, and renewing Covenants. Sixth and Seventh Grades: Compass Points Begins September 15 Preteens will be exploring the people they are and the people they want to become through the Compass Points program this year. Compass Points takes youth ages 11 to 13 on a journey through Unitarian Universalism by exploring our diverse and rich history, the Covenant of the Seven Principles, and our Six Sources. Not only will the children gain an understanding of where we come from as a faith, but also where we hope to be going. Eighth Grade: OWL (Our Whole Lives) Begins this Sunday, September 8 OWL or Our Whole Lives is our comprehensive life course that teaches accurate information about sexual health and relationships integrated with the UU friendly values of respect, compassion, responsibility, diversity, and justice. Ninth Grade: COA (Coming of Age) Begins this Sunday, September 8

This course for ninth graders helps young teens understand what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist. They study UU history, theology, and clarify their own spiritual selves. The COA year’s highlights are a Credo service where each teen presents his or her beliefs to the congregation and a UU heritage trip to Boston. Grades 10-12: Various curricula Begins September 15 Our Senior High students will have a say in choosing their courses of study this coming fall. Choices will include spiritual deepening, UU views of the Bible, and refining their sense of ethics and learning what it really means to live by UU values.

Articulating Your UU Faith with Tina Ulakovic Tuesdays 7-9 pm, September 10-October 15 zarina004@tx.rr.com What do you say when people ask, “What is that church you go to?” We will move through a series of engaging exercises–personal reflection, role-play, discussion designed to equip us in defining and articulating our faith. Members of this course will be able to tell others about the history of our faith tradition, our Principles and Purposes and our witness to liberal religion in our community, nation and world. Building Your Own Theology with JuLane Mondays 7-9 pm October 7 –December 9 Enrollment capped at 12: julane@judithlane.com The Building Your Own Theology course invites each of us to develop our own religious understanding and a deeper sense of what each of us, individually, believes and values. The BYOT class will also help you develop a deeper understanding of Unitarian Universalism. Goals for participants in this course include: Determining their values and beliefs about God or ultimate reality, human nature, ethics, and the meaning and purpose of life Discovering what other UUs believe about the great religious questions Articulating their beliefs in credo statements Meeting the challenge of building their own theology.
First Wednesdays with Rev. Dennis Hamilton 7-9 pm (6:30 brown bag supper) The first Wednesday evening of the month will be a time for us to gather together to explore our monthly themes in depth. After a short worship service, we’ll break into groups to discuss how these themes wend their ways through our lives and our Unitarian Universalist faith. Buddhist Sangha with Rev. Dennis Hamilton Tuesdays 7-9 PM buddhists@horizonuu.org Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. If you wish to come for an orientation, please arrive by 6:30.

HORIZON NEEDS NEW SIGNS TO CARRY IN THE PRIDE PARADE! Before Sunday, September 15th, we need to make some new signs to replace worn out ones, and to see how creative we can be in expressing our 2nd principle: We affirm and promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Some of our signs are truly historical, having been used in 6 or 7 or 8 parades. Let’s fix ‘em up and make new ones. Join us for an hour, or two, or stay the whole time on Saturday, September 7th, from Noon to around 4:00 in the Portable. We can share stories about the first time we marched in the Pride Parade; we can share ideas about creating signs that say just how we feel about the rights and dignities our GLTBQ friends have been denied for so long; new marchers can find out what to expect at the Parade and how welcoming it feels to hear the claps and shouts from the onlookers as What: Sign Making we turn that corner into the main street. If you can’t march this year, come make a sign anyway and share stories and ideas! Your Pride Parade Team will provide all sign making supplies and equipment but you can bring your own, too. Please bring some lunch-type snacks to share. We will provide beverages.

As we share ideas and make new signs we will watch an Portable Building historical documentary that tells the GLTBQ story from the 1920’s until the landmark Stonewall riots in 1969 that fueled the gay pride movement. The next day, after the pot-luck lunch on Sunday the 8th, during dessert, we will show the companion documentary that continues from the riots through the AIDS crisis and into the 1990s. Join the party, and join the parade carrying your own sign! Say it the way you mean it! See you there!

Horizon Guests Hold Pride Sunday Bake Sale! Turner High School Gay/Straight Alliance Sunday, September 15th
Each year on Pride Parade Sunday, members of the Turner High School Gay/Straight Alliance visit Horizon for the service then march with us in the Dallas Pride Parade. They will bring breakfast for everyone! Come hungry on September 15th and help the Alliance raise money for their group activities throughout the year by enjoying homemade bakery goods with your coffee or tea. We are proud to host their fund raising efforts, and to welcome them once again to Horizon on this special Sunday.
Share the Plate for Sunday Sep 15th Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service. The Share the Plate collection on Sunday, September 15th, is to benefit:
GALA Youth’s mission is to serve LGBTQ youth and their allied friends from middle school through the age of 22. We enhance their lives by providing empowering social and service programs that promote selfexpression, self-acceptance, leadership development and healthy life choices. GALA Youth is a program of a nonprofit, volunteer run organization (GALA North Texas) and dedicated to serving and assisting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) and allied youth by providing the youth with tools to improve self-esteem and self-acceptance. We create a safe space, mentally and physically, for youth of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Our weekly events cover a wide range of social, educational, health, and community issues. We have or guide to resources for healthy living and making healthy choices, as well as social networking.

(bookclub@horizonuu.org ) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. Buddhist Sangha: Tuesdays 7 PM -9:00 PM. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. The UU Christian Chalice Circle (uuchristians@horizonuu.org ) The UU Christian Chalice Circle provides a forum for enriching our spiritual lives through personal discovery of the heart, meaning, and tradition of Christianity. The CineMat Group (cinemat@horizonuu.org ) The CineMat group will be meeting on the 4th Saturday every month. And it’s now a Chalice Circle!. This Chalice Circle gets together to see a movie and then goes to a coffee shop or restaurant to discuss and comment on it in a friendly circle over a cup of coffee or drink. Earth Centered Spirituality Chalice Circle (earth-centereduu@horizonuu.org ) The Earth-Centered Spirituality Chalice Circle is a social/support group for people who are interested in, or already know they are following, an Earth-centered spiritual path. Healthy Women Chalice Circle (healthywomen@horizonuu.org ) A woman’s support group to help achieve their goals of health and fitness. Sharing of ideas and experiences in nutrition, weight loss, exercise and stress management. Men’s Saturday Support Group (mensgroup@horizonuu.org ) A men’s support group that includes a check-in and informal discussion of men’s issues regarding family, health, workplace, and relationships. Starts at 8AM The 2nd Tuesday Potluck Chalice Circle (secondtuesday@horizonuu.org ) This group meets for food, fellowship, and deepening friendships. They meet in the library 2nd Tuesday of most months at 12 noon. Occasionally we take a field trip instead of having a potluck lunch. Tuesday Wisdom Circle (tuesdaywisdom@horizonuu.org ) A chalice circle that offers a check-in and discussion of a weekly life issue topic selected by a group member. Parents – Forget Red Bull, WE’LL give you Wings! (every other Mon, 9a) (mondaywings@horizonuu.org ) WINGS Chalice Circle is a fun and friendly group whose purpose is to support the person within each parent by creating friendships and nurturing our intellect and creativity. Women Alive 55+ (womenalive@horizonuu.org ) - Women Alive 55+ has very recently been renamed “Senior Women’s Chalice Circle”. The group meets on the second and fourth Saturday of each month in the Horizon Library. The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) Chalice Circle (wfig@horizonuu.org) Meets on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. We welcome women of all ages to join us for fun, connection, and growth. We share stories from our lives and discuss topics that help us get to know one another better. Recent programs have included How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every Day, a night of Board Games, and TED talks on the Power of Vulnerability, Connected but Alone, and Body Language. Sixteen inspiring people who meet every Friday morning at the Fellowship Hall are able to prove that with their beautiful original masterpieces. This amazing group called Candle Lighters gathers weekly to engage in discussions and artistic activities, enhancing their lives with talent and valuable friendships. Candle Lighters is an outreach ministry of Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church, a meeting place for adults with memory issues. Open to persons of all faiths, races and ethnicities, Candle Lighters provides various activities including exercise, Tai Chi, creating a Memory Book, games, music and art.
