2005Season Outlook After its most successful season since moving to Div. I, the Sacramento State track and field team will no longer sneak up on anybody. Last spring, the Hornet men finished third and the women were fifth at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Those finishes not only opened the eyes of schools around the league, it has raised the bar for the program. “The face of this program is different,” said Kathleen Raske, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. “The team is excited about the future and has a common vision and goal which is achievable.” The goal set by the team is to not be content with their showings last season and to continue its climb to become the Big Sky elite. “Our senior council made our theme this year ‘Rising to the Top‘,” Raske said. “We gained some momentum last year and it has carried over to the fall. The kids know the routine and are all on board.” Raske returns for her second season leading the Hornets. In her first year, she took a Hornet men’s program which had never finished better than seventh and placed them into the upper-half of the conference. This season, Raske has continued adjusting her staff with the hopes of moving Sacramento State to the top of the league. Sean Gross is the lone returner, coaching the cross country team and the distance runners. New to this year’s staff are Ross Richardson, Terry VanLaningham and Rick Kantola. Richardson will work with the team’s throwers. VanLaningham is Director of Championships (Sacramento State will host the 2005-07 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships) and will also serve as the recruinting coordinator. Kantola assists in all areas of the program. “Having the new coaches aboard has been great,” Raske said. “As a staff, we all have the same goals and direction for this program.” The Hornets’ indoor schedule features four meets prior to the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Pocatello, Idaho, on Feb. 25-26. The outdoor season is highlighted by three regular-season home meets, including a dual meet against rival UC Davis on April 1. The Big Sky Championships will be held in Flagstaff, Ariz., from May 11-14 while the NCAA West Regional will take place on May 27-28 in Eugene, Ore. The NCAA Championships return to Sacramento from June 8-11.
SPRINTS
2
Like past years, Sacramento State finds its strength in the sprints. Last season, the men’s team recorded 39 points and the women scored 20 at the Big Sky Championships in the sprints (100, 200, 400, 4x100, 4x400). The women will be led by juniors Jessica Thomas and Erica Porter and sophomore Tyriena Henley-
Henderson, who each scored at the Big Sky Championships a year ago. Thomas finished eighth in the 200 in 2004, but Raske beleives she will be much better this year. “Jessica continues to evolve,” Raske said. “She is extremely talented and when she sets her mind, she can do almost anything. She has not reached her potential yet which is exciting.” Porter finished fifth in the 400 and will return as a member of the 4x400 relay team. Henley-Henderson enjoyed a strong freshman season, finishing third in the 400 and fifth in the 200 at her first Big Sky Championships. She also ran on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Other returners who could see action in the short sprints are seniors Shanita Bryant and Deirdre Reese, and sophomore Anais Castillo-Springer. Hurdle-specialist Roshena Duree could also be used in the relays if needed. Bryant began her career by placing second at the league meet in the 100 as a freshman in 2001. Since that time, injuries have limitied her ability to compete in the sprints. Reese competed in both the 200 and 400 last season. She also ran on the team’s 4x400 relay team which placed third at the Big Sky Championships. Castillo-Springer also ran the 200 and the 400 and will provide added depth for Sacramento State during her second season. The Hornet men are, once again, loaded in the sprints. The group features seniors Obi Osuji, Brandon Parker, and Chris, Nick and Jeff Santana. Billy White, David Green and Aresnio Corbin also return to the squad and will be joined by newcomers Louis Burress, Travis LeBeauf, Robert Brazier and Jordan Stevenson. Osuji has been the most consistent of the sprinters during his career. The Red Bluff, Calif., native has placed third in the 200 each of the last two years at the Big Sky Championships. Last year, he added a fourth-place finish in the 400 and ran on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams which each won a Big Sky crown. “Obi was great at the Big Sky meet last year,” Raske said. “He set PRs in both events and was big in the relays. He always works hard and lives for track and field.” Parker was the biggest surprise last year, finishing fourth in the 100 at the outdoor championships. He was also eighth in the 55-meter at the indoor championships. What makes Parker’s accomplishments impressive is the fact that he had never competed as a collegiate sprinter until last season. “Brandon is just learning how to run the 100,” Raske said. “I think he has the potential to run under 10.5 (seconds) and could contend for a Big Sky title.”
The Santana triplets, who will primarily compete in the hurdles, will also see some action in the 400. Last season, Chris was a member of the 4x400 relay team which won the Big Sky championship. White, who is also a wide receiver for the Sacramento State football team, ran the 100 and 200 last season before a concussion ended his year. Green redshirted last season during the outdoor season and will be counted on to compete in the 200 and 400. Corbin is expected to participate in the 200 after sitting out all of last season. Burress and LeBeauf come to Sacramento State after stellar high school careers. Burress ran 10.78 in the 100 and 22.3 in the 200 during his senior year. LeBeauf won a pair of league titles in both the 100 and 200 and was undefeated in league races for his final two years. Brazier and Stevenson will add depth to the 400 and could also compete in the multis.
HURDLES The women’s team returns both of its top hurdlers from last season in juniors Roshena Duree and LeClaire Ebow. Duree won the 100-hurdles at the Big Sky meet last spring and finished third in the 55-hurdles during the indoor season. This year, Raske believes she can take her talents to a higher level. “Roshena is faster than she was last year,” Raske said. “She has the potential to become an All-American.” Ebow, who was Sacramento State’s top 400-hurdler last season, has also bettered her 100-hurdles time this fall. “LeClaire has improved imensely,” Raske said. “She has worked hard both physically and mentally and has helped push Roshena which creates a great training environment.” Emily Griffin could also compete in both events. Griffin sat out last season after transferring from UC Santa Barbara. The men’s team will have to deal with the loss of both André Wright and Micah Kemp who each scored for the team last season. However, the Hornets bring back all three Santana brothers as well as Corbin, and appear ready for the challenege in 2005. Corbin finished third in the 110-hurdles as a freshman but did not compete last season. “From watching (Corbin) train, I think he is capable of running sub 14.00,” Raske said. “I am interested in seeing how he competes.” The 400-hurdles will be anchored, once again, by the Santanas. Last season, all three finished in the top five at the league championships, led by Chris who won the event. The trio also had success in the 110-hurdles where Chris was fourth, Nick was eighth and Jeff was 11th. “The Santanas are going to be great this season,” Raske said. “They are all further ahead than they have been in past seasons and are looking to sweep the 400-hurdles outdoors.”
Stevenson and Brazier could also compete in the 400-hurdles.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE While Raske has plenty of options in the sprints and hurdles, she does not yet have that luxury in the middle distance and distance races. “We are currently in the process of developing our middle distance and distance teams,” Raske said. “Coach Gross is working very hard to put them in a spot to be competitive.” The women’s team will get a boost during the indoor season when Angela Mercado will compete for the final time. Mercado, who has exhausted her outdoor eligibility, is a threat to score in the 800 and the mile. Junior Virginia Grillo and freshman Gabrielle Hernandez will be the team’s top threats during the outdoor seasons. Both athletes were consistently the leaders of the Hornets’ cross country team during the fall. Grillo specializes in the steeplechase while Hernandez will run the longer races. During the indoor season, the men will be led by senior Juan Vazquez. Like Mercado, Vazquez has just one season of indoor eligibility remaining in his collegiate career. Last season, he ran the steeplechase, 800, 3K and 5K. Once outdoors, sophomore Ryan O’Connell will run the 800. Senior David Blue is the team’s top steeplechaser while Dominic Vogl, Vincent D’Onofrio and Steven Schenck will run the long distance races.
HORIZONTAL JUMPS Arguably the strongest area on the team, the Hornets return three athletes that have won Big Sky titles in the horizontal jumps. Last season alone, the women won both the long and triple jump at the indoor championships while Parker won both the indoor and outdoor long jump crowns. The women’s team has the potential to rack up numerous points. The unit is led by four athletes who have all scored at the conference outdoor meet during their career. The group is comprised of Bryant, Duree, Thomas and Henley-Henderson. When healthy, Bryant has proven herself to be one of the top long jumpers in the Big Sky. She won both the indoor and outdoor titles as a freshman in 2001. She missed both events in 2002 but returned to finish third indoors and fifth outdoors the following season. Last year, she regained her indoor title and qualified for the NCAA West Regional during the outdoor season. This year, Bryant will strickly be used during the outdoor season and is looking to become just the fourth person to win a pair of Big Sky outdoor long jump titles during her career. Duree has scored in both the long and triple jumps during her career. As a freshman she finished second in the indoor triple jump and added a fourthplace showing during the outdoor season. She was also fifth in the outdoor long jump that same season. Last year, the San Francisco native won the indoor triple jump. Outdoors, Duree was second in the triple and seventh in the long jump.
Thomas has recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in the outdoor long jump and has also scored in the triple jump (eighth in 2004). Henley-Henderson opened her collegiate career by placing fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump at the outdoor championships. “Overall, the horizontal jumps are the strength of our women’s program,” Raske said. “We are looking for big things out of them this season and have the possibility of sweeping.” Not to be outdone, the men’s team also has an impressive pedigree. The returners are led by Parker and Richard Duhaime. Also expected to compete this season are LeBeauf and fellow freshmen Bryan Parker and Jerrad Walls. Brandon Parker has the potential to become the most decorated long jumper in Big Sky history. With a win at the indoor championships, he would become the first male to win back-to-back titles. During the outdoor season, he could add a third-straight long jump title — making him the first to perform the three-peat in conference history. Parker already holds the school record and has competed at the 2003 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. “Brandon is physically in the best shape of his career,” Raske said. “This is his first full year of training and his goals are to score at the NCAA Championships and to win another Big Sky title.” Duhaime placed fifth in the triple jump last season during his first year with the team and will again look to score for the team during the year. LeBeauf won three Capital Valley Conference long jump titles and a pair of triple jump crowns while at Vanden High School. Bryan Parker, who is the younger brother of Brandon, is slated to compete in both the triple and long jump.
VERTICAL JUMPS The vertical jumps will feature numerous athletes making their collegiate debut. In the high jump, the women are expected to use Duree and Ebow as well as heptathletes Chelsea Fuller and Antoinette Adams. The women’s pole vault lineup will feature Melissa Adams. Last season, Adams competed indoors but redhsirted during the outdoor campaign. The men’s team will also have a new look with Corbin and Jerrad Walls as the only high jumpers on the roster. However, Corbin has not competed in the event since his senior year of high school. Jimmy Williamson, Matt Gilbert and Brazier could all compete in the pole vault during their first year with the team.
THROWS Sacramento State made its mark in the throws last season at the Big Sky outdoor meet. The Hornets scored in three of the four events on both the women’s and men’s side.
The women return senior Kate Birkmaier, junior Laura Cadranel, sophomore Theresa Schultz and redshirt freshman Katie Lodato. The group will also be bolstered by the addition of transfer Ashley Ast, junior college transfer Kerby Boschee and freshman Jennifer Onyeagbako. Birkmaier will compete primarily in the discus and shot put. Last season, she finished fourth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the discus. “Kate has definitely taken a leadership role with this team,” Raske said. “She also continues to develop as a thrower.” Cadranel will throw the hammer outdoor but will likely miss the indoor season due to injury. As a sophomore, she recorded the second-longest hammer throw in school history and placed fourth at the Big Sky meet. Schultz competed in the hammer and discus last season while Lodato redshirted. Ast comes to Sacramento State from Tulsa. While with the Golden Hurricanes, she finished eighth at the Western Athletic Conference meet in the javelin and qualified for the NCAA Regional. Boschee was a junior college All-American in the discus at Clackamas Community College. Onyagbako won the Nevada state title in the discus and finished second in the shot put as a senior. The men’s team returns senior Geoff Fong and sophomore David Nichols. The duo each had success last season and will have to fill the void left by Robert Linkul. Last season, Linkul recorded the second-best hammer throw in school history and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas. Fong is expected to throw the discus and hammer, and also compete in the shot put. Last year, Fong threw over 206 feet in the hammer and scored for the team at the Big Sky meet. Nichols finished fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus during his first season with the team. He also had success during the summer where he was a two-time All-American at the USATF Junior Nationals. The javelin will be thrown by junior Mike Miller and Kyle Hasapes.
MULTIS After competing just one athlete in the multi last season (Ebow), Sacramento State has numerous athletes who could participate in the heptathlon and decathlon in 2005. The heptathlon unit is led by Ebow but also features Duree, Griffin, Fuller and Antoinette Adams. Ebow finished fifth at the Big Sky Championships despite having competed in just one other heptathlon prior to the event. Duree is slated to make her debut in the event this season and could amass numerous points in the sprints, jumps and hurdles. The men have three individuals who could all compete in their first decathlon. The group is comprised of Brazier, Duhaime and Stevenson.

Kathleen Raske is entering her second season as Sacramento State’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. Raske was named to the position on Aug. 15, 2003. At Sacramento State, Raske oversees all aspects of the men’s and women’s cross country teams as well as the indoor and outdoor track and field programs. Bozin was a three-time MAC champ in the high jump and was the top freshman to compete at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships. She went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships three more times during her career. A renowned teacher, Raske has not only coached at the collegiate level but also in regional and national competition. She was recently named as an assistant coach for the United States team at the Junior Pan-American Games in 2005. In that role, she will work with the team’s sprinters, hurdlers and relays. As a team, the Hornet men finished third at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships and the women were fifth. Both finishes were the highest in school history. Individually, Roshena Duree (near right) and Brandon Parker (far right) each had success at the meet. Duree won the 100-hurdles, was second in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Parker won the long jump for the second-straight year and was fourth in the 100. Parker also competed in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials over the summer.

The Sacramento State track and field program begins its sixth season in Hornet Stadium. Seating just over 21,000, the stadium remains the University’s most impressive athletic facility and the largest track facility in the Big Sky Conference. Thanks to a generous donation by local businessman Alex G. Spanos, Hornet Stadium underwent a major renovation in May of 1998 to accommodate the upgrades for the 2000 Olympic Trials. Reconstruction of the existing track was completed by August, just three months later. A separate warm-up track followed in 1999. In 2003, upgrades were made to the stadium lighting and a new scoreboard was installed for both track and football. Regarded as one of the fastest surfaces in the country, Hornet Stadium has also hosted the 2001 Junior Olympics, the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the 2004 U.S Track and Field Olympic Trials. The venue will also be the site of the 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The track has been used by some of the best athletes in the world. Since it was installed in 1999, one world record, six American records, 22 Olympic Trials records, eight U.S. Championship records, two NCAA records, three American junior records and two national high school records have been set at the facility. That list is surely to grow as the NCAA Championship Meet returns to Sacramento State for the next three years. The stadium track is surfaced with Mondo Sportflex Super X and features eight 1.22 meter-wide lanes on the oval and nine lanes for the 200 and 100 meter races. The track has a 37-meter radius with the steeplechase water jump on the inside of the track on the North curve. The field event areas include two dual directional long/triple jump runways positioned on the inside of the East side of the track. There are
also two dual directional pole vault runways located inside the North end of the track. The high jump has two approach areas on each end. The field event approach surfaces are all Mondo Sportsflex Super X. All throwing events can be contested on the infield inside the track. In addition to the high-quality stadium track, there is a 400-meter oval practice track located just to the North of the stadium. The additional track is used for warm-ups at large meets and as an extra practice site. The second track is also surfaced with Mondo Sportsflex Super X and has a six-lane straightaway with a two-lane 400 meter oval built to the same specifications of the stadium track. All jumping and throwing events have runways, pits, and rings within the practice facility.

Students Pass Measure 1 for RWEC On April 28, 2004, Sacramento State students passed Measure 1 which will build a Recreation, Wellness and Event Center on campus. A record 4,985 students cast votes in the election, with 55.2% voting in favor of the RWEC. The new center is 236,000 square feet and could include such features as a 6,500-8,000 seat arena, a movie theater, a bowling center, an indoor pool, courts for nearly every sport, a dental clinic, and emergency facilities. The project received a generous $10 million gift from Alex G. Spanos in the fall of 2004. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2006. At that time, the full fee of $110 per semester will be implemented. Aside from the obvious benefit of the having the new arena, intercollegiate athletics will also be aided by the new center. The building is scheduled to house the athletic department offices and will also include a new training room and athletic weight room. The RWEC will be built just north of the football stadium. The center will replace the existing fieldhouse and will provide a new locker room and meeting spaces for the football team. The current proposal also includes permanent stands for the football stadium to built attached to the RWEC.
Hornet Stadium Weight Room Sacramento State track & field sees strength training as one of its cornerstones to a great program and we have the tremendous opportunity to share strength training facilities with the Hornet football program. Located adjacent to the practice track and 100 meters from Spanos Stadium the strength training building is in a perfect location to compliment practice on the track or in the field. The facility offers seven Olympic platforms, high test Olympic bars and bumper plates for explosive, multi-joint training as well as eight multi-station power racks for traditional power training movements. With well over 10,000 pounds of free weight and a large compliment of dumbbells this training area can accommodate up to 35 student-athletes in one training session. Isolation machines, medicine balls and plyometric boxes round out the compliment of training modalities in the facility and offer all the advantages that a modern track and field program needs to be successful.
