COACHING STAFF MICHAEL LINENBERGER 21ST SEASON AS HEAD COACH DUKE, 1987

Michael Linenberger begins his 21st season at the helm of the Sacramento State men’s soccer program. He began his coaching career with the Hornets as an assistant in 1988 and co-head coach from 1989 to 1991, before taking sole control of the head coaching duties in 1992. He has led the team through each year as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, beginning in 1992 and returns to the field in 2009 with hopes of capturing the MPSF’s automatic bid into the NCAA College Cup, which will be awarded via conference tournament for the first time since 2003. Sacramento State posted an 8-9-2 mark in 2008, finishing fourth in the MPSF with a record of 3-7-0. Three Hornets earned all-conference honors, with sophomore Fernando Cabadas earning first team accolades. Seniors Adam Owens (second team) and Omar Martinez (honorable mention) graduated and headed to Puerto Rico to continue their soccer careers at the professional level. The Hornets finished the 2007 campaign with a record of 4-13-2, including a 3-6-1 mark in the MPSF. For the Name: third straight season, the Hornets had a player drafted in the Major Indoor Soccer League as midfielder Eli Millan, Michael Linenberger who earned second team all-confernece honors, was selected in the fourth round by the California Cougars. He Place of Birth: joined Marco Ramirez (2005) and Pedro Lupercio (2006) as Cougar draft picks from Sacramento State. In 2003, Linenberger led the Hornet squad to its third-consecutive MPSF postseason appearance. It marked the Dallas, Texas first time Sacramento State had reached postseason play three consecutive years. Marital Status: During the 2001 season, Linenberger guided the Hornets to their first regular-season conference championship in the Div. I era (1991-present). Sacramento State’s 4-1-2 MPSF record also gave the Hornets their most conference Married (Michelle) wins in program history at the time. Due to his efforts, Linenberger was named the 2001 MPSF Men’s Soccer Coach Children: of the Year. Matthew (18), Melissa (13) Off the field, he served five years as a member of the NCAA Div. I national selection committee. Linenberger was named to the NCAA Div. I Men’s Soccer Committee in the fall of 1997. As chair of the Far West Region, he High School: travelled to Indianapolis, and served as the region representative during the process of selecting the 48 teams that Lake Highlands HS compete annually in the NCAA tournament. Dallas, Texas (1983 As a member of the NCAA soccer committee, Linenberger’s duties included overseeing site selection in the Far West Region for all rounds leading up to the Men’s College Cup, updating selection criteria and standards for the Bachelor’s Degree: championships, rating conferences and serving at the College Cup as a member of the NCAA contingent which Duke (1987) oversees the event. Psychology In October of 2008, Linenberger was named head coach of the U.S. Soccer Olympic Development Program for Region IV, overseeing all five age groups between u-14 and u-18. Linenberger is in charge of coach selection, Record at Sac State: player selection and the overall training curriculum. 125-210-33 In addition, Linenberger was named as a scout by the U.S. Soccer Federation for Project 2010, an initiative designed to make the men’s national team fully competitive by the 2010 World Cup. His primary duties included the scouting of 13-14 year olds in Northern California that have future national team potential but are not in the ODP system. Linenberger received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Duke University in 1987. He was a four-year letterwinner as a member of the Blue Devils’ soccer team and a team captain. He was captain of the 1986 squad which won the NCAA Div. I national title. Linenberger played professional soccer with the Sacramento Senators and for FC St. Pauli and SC Norderstedt in Germany’s second and third divisions. In addition, 30 of his former Sacramento State student-athletes have gone on to professional careers. That includes Joe Enochs, who was named to the 2001 U.S. National team. A holder of a United States Soccer Federation A license in coaching, Linenberger played with the under-20 United States National Youth Team and in the U.S. Olympic Festival.

COACHING STAFF MATT McDOUGALL FOURTH SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH SACRAMENTO STATE, 2006

Matt McDougall enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the men’s soccer program. McDougall is a former three-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree with the Hornets. He was promoted to the team’s top assistant position in July of 2009 after serving as the goalkeeper’s coach the previous three seasons. Under his new position, McDougall will be instrumental in recruiting and the day-to-day functions of the program, including film exchange and defensive coaching. He holds the Division I program record with 306 career saves and is second all-time with 10 career shutouts. His 1.45 career goals against average ranks second in the school’s Division I history, and in 2004, he spent every minute in goal for Sacramento State. In 2005, he earned all-MPSF first team honors after posting a career best 1.15 goals against average and leading the Hornets to a 9-7-2 record, the program’s best mark since 1992. In his final two seasons in net for the Hornets, McDougall led the MPSF in saves A local graduate of Jesuit High School, McDougall led the Mauraders to consecutive Metro League championships in 2000 and 2001. In 2007, McDougall led the Stockton Pumas to the Premier Arena Soccer League’s Summer National Championship while earning tournament MVP honors. McDougall has also played for the Sacramento Knights of the National Premier Soccer League and the California/Stockton Cougars of the Major Indoor Soccer League during the past three years. He is also the goalkeepers coach for the San Juan Soccer club.

COACHING STAFF GREG CURRY

FIRST SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH UC SANTA BARBARA, 2008 Greg Curry begins his ﬁrst season as an assistant coach with the Hornets Curry comes to Sacramento State from the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, where he was a member of their reserve squad after being selected in the third round of the 2008 MLS draft. Injuries forced Curry to retire in 2008, and he returns to his hometown to begin his collegiate coaching career. A 2003 graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Curry was a four-year letterwinner at UC Santa Barbara for coach Tim Von Steeg from 2003-07, redshirting the 2005 season. He was a part of the Gauchos 2006 national championship squad, starting on the defensive backline in both College Cup contests, including the title game against UCLA. Curry was also a key member of the UC Santa Barbara squad that lost in the national ﬁnal in 2004 to Indiana on penalty kicks. Curry was the Sacramento Bee’s 2002 Metro Player of the Year while at Christian Brothers, and was a three-time Sierra Valley League MVP. He returned to the high school ranks, coaching the San Marcos High School varsity girls soccer team in 2007. Curry has also served as a coach for the California Legends and Santa Barbara Soccer Club at the youth level. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2008 with a degree in business.

OSCAR SANDOVAL SECOND SEASON AS VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT SACRAMENTO STATE, 2007

Former Hornet Oscar Sandoval begins his second season as a volunteer assistant coach. A two-time all-conference selection, Sandoval was named to the MPSF first team in 2006 after scoring six goals, ending his two-year career with 14 goals and four assists. Known for his creativity and flair on the field, some highlights during his senior season included scoring the game-tying goal with a bicycle kick en route to a 2-1 overtime victory at UNLV. He also scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Air Force, and ended his collegiate career scoring in the final match of the season, a 3-0 victory at San Jose State. Prior to his time in the Green and Gold, Sandoval attended Moorpark College were he was a two-time all-Western State Conference selection. A native of Littlerock, Calif., Sandoval graduated from Sacramento State in 2007 with a degree in communications.

THE MPSF The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-93 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The three founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX ERIES ECORDS and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a N LAY safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the AIR FORCE ............ 10-10 Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD ... 0-0 as well as the addition of women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse. In 2009-10, the MPSF will again sponsor competition in nine intercollegiate Olympic DENVER ............... 3-12-2 sports while serving over 1,500 student-athletes and approximately 71 teams from 34 NEW MEXICO ....... 2-11-2 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level SAN JOSE STATE ..... 6-15-2 in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF SEATTLE .................... 0-0 champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, UNLV ...................10-4 men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events. Two new teams join the MPSF in men’s soccer this season, Cal State Bakersfield and Seattle, drastically changing the MPSF schedule. Instead of round-robin play, which the conference had been using since 2004, each team will play one game against each of the seven other squads in an attempt to finish in the top four to make the MPSF postseason tournament. The tournament will be held on the home field of the Denver Pioneers, last year’s regular season champions.

In 1996, the Sacramento State coaching staff established the Hornet Honor Roll. Selected individuals are former members of the program that have made a contribution to men’s soccer either during or after their career with the program. Inductees are honored during the yearly awards banquet in order to unite members of the Sacramento State men’s soccer program, both past and present.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is the seventh largest university in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of more than 29,000. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes additional housing, and a recreation and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. • Sacramento State offers 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees in eight Colleges. Teacher education is the largest academic program, followed by business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. Partnering With Athletics For Excellence When the Sacramento State student body overwhelmingly passed a referendum in the spring of 1995, it began a partnership between the Hornet Athletics Department and Associated Students, Inc. That vote by the students helps fund the athletics department and has been a key factor in the recent success. ASI is a student-run, non-proﬁt corporation that represents the student body in the governance of the University. One of ASI’s goals is to facilitate student participation in a full range of campus life and learning outside the classroom. Guided by this goal, ASI supports intercollegiate, recreational, and intramural sports, which is not only an important part of campus life, but an arena in which leadership skills are developed. ASI also operates the Green Sting student organization, the Sacramento State Aquatic Center (which is home to the Hornet rowing team), the Challenge Center, Peak Adventures and numerous other student organizations.

As California’s capitol city, Sacramento is center stage for governmental policy for the entire state. A dynamic business sector, an expanding public transportation system, affordable housing, and growing cultural, educational, and medical facilities serve the needs of 1.5 million people. • One of the most affordable big cities in California., Sacramento is part of a Capital Region in the heart of Northern California, one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the ﬁrst person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and beyond.

Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ seven-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 18-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last three years where the Hornets have combined to win 21 conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. In addition, the program has claimed back-to-back Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophies. In fact, of the 330 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornet football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body and is expected to open in the fall of 2010. Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and just completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee and the Div. I Football Issues Committee. Previously, he was a member of the NCAA Football rules committee and the NCAA Peer Review committee. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling.

Over the last seven years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted nearly 2,000 term GPAs of 3.0 or above, and close to 500 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his seven years at Sacramento State, 22 teams and 125 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. During his seven years of leadership, Sacramento State has served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conferences. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley and son Jack. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis with their daughter Elli.

The Student-Athlete Resource Center offers academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules education and compliance, athletic ﬁnancial services support, and life skills programming for all student-athletes of Sacramento State’s Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program. The S.A.R.C.’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways including individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education sessions, freshmen seminar classes, and a variety of student development and academic workshops. S.A.R.C. Director Paul Edwards, Academic Athletic Services Coordinator Laurie Dahlberg, Football Athletic Advisor Bob Shook and Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Mark McGushin serve as the primary advisors to the student-athletes. Additionally, McGushin coordinates the mentoring program which addresses student-athletes experiencing academic difﬁculties. Athletic Compliance and Financial Services Director Katherine Zedonis and Compliance Coordinator Tina Westerhold are responsible for the administration of NCAA eligibility rules education and compliance for all intercollegiate teams, including issues related to athletic financial aid of student-athletes. The Athletic Compliance Office is responsible for developing, monitoring and enforcing a compliance program that ensures the integrity of the institution within the guidelines of the NCAA, Big Sky Conference and the University. Admission Counselor/NCAA Initial Eligibility Coordinator Josh Collins services Sacramento State student-athletes with admission processing responsibilities and monitoring of NCAA initial-eligibility requirements. Collins works closely with both new transfer and incoming freshmen student-athletes. He is the main contact at Sacramento State for student-athletes working with NCAA Eligibility Center procedures.

The goal of the athletic training staff is to provide all Sacramento State student-athletes with high quality health care. Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers Steve DeHart, Heather Farwig and Joe Ramos, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides state-of-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to the appropriate medical provider or facility. Sacramento State boasts three athletic training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Broad Fieldhouse). All athletic training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every student-athlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes is a Kaiser physician, two dentists, a physical therapist and a chiropractor. Sacramento State’s athletic training staff consists of three full-time certified athletic trainers, three graduate assistants and more than 15 athletic training students preparing for a career in sports medicine.
