The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks. This season marks the 48th for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its fifth year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members Boise State, San Jose State and Utah State and affiliate members Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Fresno State won the last title in 2008 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

FACILITIES

Sacramento State trains at Technique Gymnastics located nearby campus in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Hornets have the luxury of practicing in the 38,000-square foot facility which is one of the largest and best equipped gymnastics training centers in the West. The enormous facility allows Sacramento State gymnasts to train throughout their practice session without having to compete for time on the equipment. Technique features three full-sized oors, a tumble track, three vault runways and tables, eight competition beams and four sets of bars. In addition, it also has over 17,000 square feet of foam pits for added safety. On campus, the team is able to condition in the new Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse located on the south end of campus. Under the watch of Strength and Conditioning Director Terrance Brooks and Tom Ruelas, the Hornets perform their workouts in a state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room.

HORNET GYMNASTICS Why Sacramento State? The Team

Being a part of the team is more than just practices and meets. Their close-knit relationship is evident throughout the year as the team spends most of its non-gymnastics time together, performing community service, attending other sporting events and celebrating holidays and birthdays. One of the yearly highlights is the team’s preseason trip. This past fall, the Hornets travelled to the Calavares Big Trees for a weekend of hiking, games and bonding. “I always felt everyone had my back, especially the coaches and my team. When I’d get knocked down, I had 20 hands helping me back up. With the support, it helped me become a better athlete and person.” - Nicole Giao, ‘08

The Coaches

The 2010 season marks a quarter of a century that head coach Kim Hughes and assistant coach Randy Solorio have worked together on the coaching staff. The pair have elevated Sacramento State from the AIAW to Div. II and eventually Div. I. The Hornets have enjoyed unprecendented success in their tenure. Hughes is beginning his 29th season as the head coach and his 31st with the program, while Solorio is entering his 25th season. Former Hornet Jamie Donkin is also in her seventh year as a member of the staff. “I decided to come to Sacramento State because of the coaching staff. When you get here, they become more than just coaches to you.” - Amanda Bieber, Junior

The Success

After high-level national success at the Div. II level, Sacramento State made the jump to Div. I in 1992. Sacramento State broke through with its first NCAA regional appearance in 1999. From that point, the Hornets have been a force in the West, claiming seven conference championships and being represented at the NCAA Regionals every year. The team has also defeated at least one top 25 team each of the last four years. “Being a part of a winning team is something that I will never forget. There’s something special knowing that you were able to carry on the tradition. I still get chills thinking about it.” - Melissa Genovese, ‘08

The Support

Part of the team’s success has been a dominating record at home which is aided by a great crowd. Despite the cozy confines of the Hornets Nest, Sacramento State has one of the best gymnastic environments in the WAC. In the spring of 2009, an overflow crowd was on hand for the WAC Championships and helped push the team to a second-place showing. Outside of competition, the team is aided by a medical staff which features athletic trainers, doctors and surgeons. Hornet gymnasts also have the availability of academic advisors and tutors to help them stay on course to graduate and succeed in the classroom.

SEASON OUTLOOK

SEASON OUTLOOK Last season, the Sacramento State gymnastics team overcame numerous obstacles and a sixth place preseason prediction to surge at the end of the season and finish second at the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The mission for the this year’s team is to regain a spot at the top of the WAC for the third time in the last five years. To accomplish that feat, however, the Hornets will have to overcome the loss of three of its biggest contributors from a year ago.

8

“We’re still a very experienced team,” Hughes said. “We have four seniors who have been competing since they were freshmen and I believe they’re ready to lead this team.” That senior class is comprised of Lauren Dyson, Lizzy Norvell, Eryn Stubblefield and Traci Takeda. The group has been to a pair of NCAA Regionals as a team while Stubblefield and Takeda each advanced as individuals in 2009.

The graduation of Marina Borisova and Amber Basgall and the departure of Alycia Chan leaves the Hornets searching to fill 10 routines. Borisova was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2006 and won a pair of WAC floor titles, Basgall was the 2009 conference bar champ and Chan was a three-time allWAC selection.

Along with the seniors, the team brings back 13 other members from last season’s squad which ended the year with three consecutive scores of at least 194.625. Among that group are juniors Amanda Bieber (who’s coming off a redshirt season), Amanda Blauvelt, Jasmine Lipka and Lissa Zamolo. All four have been key contributors in single events but each will likely take on added responsibilities, according to Hughes.

Kim Hughes, who enters his 29th season as Sacramento State’s head coach, will have the luxury of turning to a senior-laden team to plug those holes.

Four newcomers will also look to put their stamp on the team. Freshmen Nicole Meiller, Dayle Akamine and Jillian Kweller will be joined by sophomore Emiko Ono. A transfer

from BYU, Ono will provide the team with instant experience on vault and bars. “They’re going to see action and each can contribute in their own way,“ Hughes said of the newcomers. No matter who’s in the lineup, they will face another difficult schedule. Sacramento State will square off against five teams which advanced to the NCAA Regionals last season. The Hornets open the year in Reno, Nev., by facing WAC foes Boise State and San Jose State on Jan. 15. The team’s first home meet will take place on Jan. 22 when it hosts UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. Another notable on the schedule is a Feb. 7 meet at Stanford which also features Washington. Both team competed in the postseason last year with the Cardinal advancing to the NCAA Championships. The regular season closes on March 27 with the WAC Championships at Cal State Fullerton.

2010 HORNET GYMNASTICS MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON OUTLOOK Vault will have a dramatically different look for Sacramento State in 2010 with both the level of difficulty and the faces for the Hornets. The team returns just three members from its lineup at the WAC Championships a year ago, comprised of Eryn Stubblefield, Amanda Blauvelt and Traci Takeda. That group will have to pick up the void left by Marina Borisova, Alycia Chan and Amber Basgall — all of which earned all-WAC honors on vault during their careers. Stubblefield competed in each meet last season on vault and averaged 9.702. She peaked at the end of the season with a career high 9.725 at the WAC Championships. The Corvallis, Ore., native worked hard over the summer to add a new 10.0-level vault to her repetoire, which should raise her score. “Eryn really stepped it up a notch,” Hughes said. “She has learned a new 10.0 vault which proves she is really gearing up for her final season.” Like Stubblefield, Takeda also competed in all 11 meets last season. During that span, she had four vaults of at least 9.725, including a pair of 9.750s which set her career mark. Blauvelt battled an ankle injury for most of the season but regained her spot in the lineup for the WAC Championships and responded with a career best of 9.775. To help ease the transition, Hughes is counting on the return of junior Amanda Bieber and sophomore Cayla Boyce and newcomers Nicole Meiller and Emiko Ono. Bieber was a fixture on vault during her first two seasons but sat out last season with a shoulder injury. Boyce competed in seven meets on vault last season before injuries forced her out of the rotation. Junior Kaitie Kinser could also challenge for a spot.

“Right now, we have three 10.0 vaults which is the most we’ve had in a long time,” Hughes said. “We’re really expecting a lot from our returners and will need the newcomers to come in and contribute right away.” uuuuuuuuuu Senior Eryn Stubblefield is one of three Hornets with a 10.0 vault in 2010. Stubblefield has been in the lineup on vault in every meet the last two seasons.

tttttttttt Senior Traci Takeda is one of three captains for Sacramento State. Last season Takeda broke her previous career high on vault four times.

SEASON OUTLOOK

BARS

As has been the case for most of the previous decade, Sacramento State is counting on its bars lineup to help lead the team to success. The Hornets have recorded eight of their top 10 scores on the event since the turn of the century and have no reason to doubt this year’s squad is capable of adding its name to the list. Five returners all saw action last season but that group will have to battle with newcomers Nicole Meiller and Emiko Ono for one of the spots in the lineup. The returners are led by seniors Lauren Dyson (above), Eryn Stubblefield and Traci Takeda, junior Amanda Blauvelt (right), and sophomore Cayla Boyce. Junior Jasmine Lipka could also contend for a spot, despite not competing in the event during her first two years. Blauvelt and Dyson have the highest regional qualifying scores (RQS) among the returners at 9.765 and 9.725, respectively. The pair each competed in every meet last season and each finished first in one meet. Stubblefield and Boyce were also consistent contributors while Takeda saw action in five meets. One of the factors that has made Sacramento State successful in the past is the team’s ability to perform complicated dismounts. This year, Meiller is expected to use a very rare triple twisting fly away while Stubblefield will have a double lay and Lipka will use a double front. “We lost two big routines from last year (in seniors Marina Borisova and Amber Basgall) but Nicole should be able to help offset that,” Hughes said. A native of Aurora, Ill., Meiller was the Level 10 regional bar champion in 2008 and was a national qualifier in the event.

10

“Bars can be a strong event for us this season,” Hughes said. “We have a ton of experience in the lineup and they’ve worked hard to keep adding new skills for this year.”

2010 HORNET GYMNASTICS MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON OUTLOOK With four of its six regular starters back from last season, beam will be the event with the least amount of change for Sacramento State in 2010. The Hornets have the luxury of returning seniors Eryn Stubblefield, Lizzy Norvell and Traci Takeda as well as junior Lissa Zamolo from a successful 2009 campaign. That group will also be aided by sophomores Cayla Boyce and Mary Peck (right) who also competed during the season. Takeda and Stubblefied each earned second team all-WAC honors after tying for fifth place at the conference meet. Both went on to compete at the NCAA West Regional — Stubblefield in the all-around and Takeda on beam. During the year, Takeda recorded an RQS of 9.805 on beam and was the WAC Specialist of the Week after scoring a career high 9.925 at Southern Utah. Stubblefield ranks second among returners with an RQS of 9.775. The Corvallis, Ore., native’s score of 9.825 at the WAC Championship tied her season high and was one of her eight scores of at least 9.700 during the season. Norvell (below) competed in nine meets during the year while splitting time with track and field where she is a pole vaulter. “We have a lot of experience on beam but not much depth,” Hughes said. “We need to stay healthy and have some of the newcomers rise to the occasion.” Two of the newcomers on the event could be junior Jasmine Lipka and freshman Dayle Akamine.

“This senior class has been a part of some of the best beam scores in school history,” Hughes said. “They know what it takes to be successful and have proven their ability on a daily basis over the past three sea-

BEAM

The top eight beam scores in school history were recorded over the last three seasons (2007-09). That includes four scores of 49.000 or better. Last year’s top score of 48.825 is tied for seventh in the Sacramento State reord book.

SEASON OUTLOOK

FLOOR

The challenge for Sacramento State on floor is a great one. The Hornets must overcome the loss of two-time WAC champion Marina Borisova as well as Amber Basgall who both graduated following last season. Taking the reigns of the event this season will be senior Eryn Stubblefield who is the only healthy member of the team with significant experience on floor. Sophomore Cayla Boyce (left) and junior Lissa Zamolo (below) would add great assistance if at full strength but the pair are battling injuries to their shoulder and leg, respectively. Both, however, are expected to return as the season progresses. Stubblefield ranked second on the team last season, and is the top returner, with an RQS of 9.715. Junior Jasmine Lipka and junior Kaitie Kinser also return after seeing some action a year ago. Lipka competed in nine of the 11 events and had a career high of 9.725 against San Jose State. Boyce had a very strong first season with the Green and Gold, recording an RQS of 9.700 in nine routines. Her top score of 9.800 came in a quadrangular meet hosted by Washington. After a one-year absence, Zamolo returned to the floor for 10 routines and had an RQS of 9.635. Her career high of 9.750 came in the season opener against California and UC Davis. Three possible solutions to filling the gaps are a trio of returners who did not compete on floor in 2009. Junior Amanda Blauvelt was slated to earn a spot in the rotation heading into the season but an ankle injury left her sidelined. Amanda Bieber competed on floor in 2007 and 2008 but missed all of last season while recovering from a shoulder injury. The final addition could be redshirt freshman Bethany Barrick, who came to the Hornets with a sparkling floor resumé but missed all of last season with a leg injury. Another new change comes on the sidelines where assistant coach Jamie Donkin is in her first season as the team’s primary choreographer. “Jamie’s done a nice job updating the routines,” Hughes said. “She brings a different look to the team and has also been key in switching up some of the music.”

“There are plenty of opportunites for people to earn a spot on floor, it’s just a matter of who’s willing to put the extra work in and step up,” Hughes said. “That said, the group we have coming back is experienced and should be able to lead us to success.”

THE COACHES KIM HUGHES Head Coach | 29th Year | Chico State, ‘76

PERSONAL Birthdate April 29, 1953 Wife Darla Children Jonathan (25), Jordan (23) High School Berkeley High School, ‘71 Bachelor’s Degree Chico State, ‘76 Master’s Degree Sacramento State, ‘84

CAREER HONORS High School Northern California Still Rings Champion (1971) Coaching West Region Coach of the Year (1999, 2006) Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2006) MPSF Coach of the Year (2002) NorCal Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (1984) Team WAC Champions (2006, 2007) MPSF Champions (2002, 2003, 2005) WIC Champions (2000, 2001)

After 31 years with Sacramento State women’s gymnastics (28 as head coach), Kim Hughes has developed a program from the Div. II ranks and created a model of success at the Div. I level. However, despite all of his previous success, not many people would have predicted how quickly the Hornets would adapt to the Western Athletic Conference. In its first season in the league, Sacramento State captured the WAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional. That performance made Hughes the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The Hornets then tacked on a second title in as many years with a victory in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the third time in school history. In 2008, the Hornets missed their third consecutive WAC title but still managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third season in a row. Last season, the team hosted the WAC meet for the first time in school history and repsonded with a second-place finish. The WAC championships are just the latest conquests for the Hornets. In fact, Sacramento State has won seven league titles in the last 10 years. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships (2002-03). After finishing second in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. For his efforts, Hughes was named MPSF Women’s Gymnastics Coach of the Year following the 2002 season. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 28 gymnasts to the NCAA Regional since 1994. That list includes three in 2009 and 2005, and four in 2004. Hughes has also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2009, the squad had a 3.15 team GPA. That total included 16 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and nine who posted better than a 3.5. His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He has twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a cosponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes also earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two children, 25-year-old Jonathan and 23year-old Jordan.

Randy Solorio, the 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has proven to be a mainstay of Hornet gymnastics in his 24 years of service to the program. “Randy is a motivator as well as a great technician,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “He has a keen ability to deal with the individual student-athlete and help them reach their athletic potential. “He knows how to make gymnastics fun for the athlete.” Hughes and Solorio were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working in internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes additional housing, and a recreation and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Partnering With Athletics For Excellence When the Sacramento State student body overwhelmingly passed a referendum in the spring of 1995, it began a partnership between the Hornet Athletics Department and Associated Students, Inc. That vote by the students helps fund the athletics department and has been a key factor in the recent success. ASI is a student-run, non-profit corporation that represents the student body in the governance of the University. One of ASI’s goals is to facilitate student participation in a full range of campus life and learning outside the classroom. Guided by this goal, ASI supports intercollegiate, recreational, and intramural sports, which is not only an important part of campus life, but an arena in which leadership skills are developed. ASI also operates the Green Sting student organization, the Sacramento State Aquatic Center (which is home to the Hornet rowing team), the Challenge Center, Peak Adventures and numerous other student organizations.

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and beyond.

Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ seven-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 18-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last three years where the Hornets have combined to win 21 conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. In addition, the program has claimed back-to-back Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophies. In fact, of the 330 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornet football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body and is expected to open in the fall of 2010. Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and just completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee and the Div. I Football Issues Committee. Previously, he was a member of the NCAA Football rules committee and the NCAA Peer Review committee. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling.

Over the last seven years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted nearly 2,000 term GPAs of 3.0 or above, and close to 500 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his seven years at Sacramento State, 22 teams and 125 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. During his seven years of leadership, Sacramento State has served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conferences. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley and son Jack. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis with their daughter Elli.
