2011-12 SEASON PROSPECTUS

PLAYERS TO WATCH #24 Kylie Kuhns Junior Forward Salem, Ore. Sprague HS

The Sacramento State women’s basketball team and head coach Jamie Craighead will look to rebound from a rebuilding season in 2011-12.

Kylie Kuhns was an honorable mention all-Big Sky selection despite leading the conference in rebounding (11.8) and being ranked No. 3 in scoring (15.9), No. 2 in field goal percentage (.497), No. 3 in blocks (1.2 per game), No. 9 in assists (3.0 per game), No. 6 in steals (1.9 per game), No. 9 in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.0 – 88/87) and No. 6 in minutes played (33.4)... was ranked No. 1 in the NCAA on Nov. 28 with 11.1 rebounds per game and in the very next contest, grabbed a school record 23 boards against San Francisco...finished the season with 13 double-doubles, the most in the conference.

#23 Emily Christensen Senior Forward El Dorado Hills, Calif. Oak Ridge HS Emily Christensen suffered a season-ending knee injury against Pacific in the first game of the season and was awarded a medical hardship for the year...started 29-of-30 games during the 2009-10 season en route to all-Big Sky honorable mention honors...was second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game which ranked fifth in the conference...also ranked in the top-10 in the Big Sky in rebounding (6.8 rpg) and steals (1.6 spg).

#44 Natasha ToRgerson Junior Forward Grants Pass, Ore. Grants Pass HS Natasha Torgerson ranked No.1 on the team, No. 2 in the Big Sky Conference and No. 104 in the NCAA with 1.4 blocks per game as she moved to No. 7 all-time in single-season school history with 42 blocks last year...has transformed her body this offseason, losing weight, and will be expected to play additional minutes this year... had seven blocks against UC Davis, the most in a single game in the Big Sky last year and was just one off tying Kristine Knowlton’s school record eight blocks.

4

Last year the Hornets played six true freshmen and just three upperclassmen as the team endured growing pains en route to a 4-25 season (1-15 Big Sky). Sacramento State’s lone conference victory came in the season finale against Weber State with the Hornets collecting a 64-55 home win. Key in that victory were the double-doubles by then-sophomore forwards Kylie Kuhns and Natasha Torgerson, who will be back to lead the Hornets in the paint this season. Kuhns posted one of the most impressive seasons in school history as she ranked in the NCAA’s top-15 in rebounding for the entire season. She paced the nation for three weeks, and after earning the No. 1 spot in the rebound rankings, Kuhns responded by pulling down a single-game school record 23 boards against San Francisco on Dec. 1. That mark tied the Big Sky Conference single-game record as well. By the end of the year, Kuhns led the conference in rebounding (11.8) and ranked No. 3 in scoring (15.9), No. 2 in field goal percentage (.497) and No. 3 in blocks (1.2 per game). This season the Hornets will once again feature a large group of true freshmen but the young players from a year ago will each have the benefit of another year’s experience in Craighead’s fast-paced offense. POINT GUARDS The competition for the starting point guard role will be the most closely watched position battle during preseason practices. The Hornets graduated last year’s starter in Tika Koshiyama-Diaz and will look to an underclassman to fill the role this year. Back is sophomore Jordan Kealoha, a walk-on who averaged 7.4 minutes per game a season ago. But also in the mix are two new faces, freshmen Fantasia Hilliard and Mariah Brown. Hilliard, the younger sister of standout Hornet running back Brian Hilliard, is a lightning quick lead guard who averaged 12.3 points and 5.3 assists per game last season for a Sacramento HS team that went 28-6. “Fantasia is a true point guard with lots of speed and athletic ability,” Craighead said. Brown was a Six County All Star following her senior season at Modesto Christian HS, which recognizes the top 24 players in the Stanislaus district. “Mariah is a point guard who has a scorer’s mentality,” Craighead said.

WINGS The Hornets lost both of their starting wing players from last year - forward Jasmine Cannady and guard Sami Field-Polisso. Guards Alle Moreno and Se’nyce Parrish plus forwards Sadie Clements and Mallorie Franco will be looking to fill those vacated roles. All four played in more than 20 games last season. Moreno will be counted on to fill the vacated deep threat role that Field-Polisso played last year. Also in the mix are freshmen Takara “TK” Burse and Liz Mills. Burse is an extremely athletic shooting guard who can also bang down low. “Takara is a scorer and a very active rebounder who possesses great strength,” Craighead said. “She is a gym rat and a true competitor.” Mills averaged 13.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks as a junior at Kentwood HS and will play a similar role to Christensen, playing both the wing and post. “Liz has the skills of a guard but fights like an inside player,” Craighead said. POSTS The post positions of power forward and trail post will be a major strength for the Hornets this season. With starters Kuhns and Torgerson back and a host of talented players on the roster, Craighead will have enviable depth down low. Key will be the return of trail post Emily Christensen. Christensen missed last season after suffering a knee injury in the first game of the year but was a standout in Craighead’s offense as a junior during the 200910 campaign. Christensen, while undersized for a tradition post player, is tough and rebounds very well while being able to shoot from the outside, a key component of the trail post role. Torgerson filled that role last season and will likely backup Christensen. After sitting out a season following her transfer from UC Santa Barbara, center Megan Kritscher is in line for considerable playing time. Kritscher runs very well for a post and will back up Kuhns at power forward. Shanti Smith showcased a wide array of post moves during her freshman season in which she averaged 5.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. She will also backup Kuhns at power forward. New this year is freshman Megan Mullings. “Megan is a tall, lanky athlete who has speed and can jump out of the gym,” Craidhead said. “She will be great in the press and can definitely run. She is a smart kid who will pick up what we do quickly.”

THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE

The Big Sky Conference enters its 49th year of athletic competition in 2011-12. The Big Sky is an NCAA Division I member in all sports, with member institutions classified in the Football Championship Subdivision (formally I-AA). For the sixth straight year, the Big Sky is a nine-team league. But that will change for the 201213 season, as Cal Poly and UC Davis join the conference for football only while North Dakota and Southern Utah join in all sports.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the league in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.

The current lineup includes Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State and Weber State. Northern Colorado is the newest member of the league, having joined the conference in 2006.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996, Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge.

12

The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky Conference spreads across eight states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountain Front. The Big Sky is represented along the entire west coast with schools in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Of the eight western-most states in the contiguous United States only one, Nevada, is not represented in the Big Sky Conference.

JAMIE CRAIGHEAD THIRD SEASON AS HEAD COACH OREGON, 2002 • CAREER RECORD: 19-40 (11-21 BIG SKY)

Head coach Jamie Craighead is entering her third season at the helm of the Sacramento State women’s basketball program. The young coach has turned the Hornets into one of the most explosive teams in the nation as her fast break, uptempo offense led the Big Sky Conference in scoring the last two seasons. Craighead’s fast-paced style is based on the press and run - playing full-court defense to create turnovers that result in open shots and easy baskets. Sacramento State paced the conference in steals in 2009-10, averaging more than 10 per game. The shot clock is not needed in Craighead’s system as she encourages her team to hoist shots early and often. An important part of a team that takes quick shots is rebounding ability. The Hornets ranked No. 1 in the conference in each of Craighead’s first two seasons as head coach, averaing 41.4 rebounds per game in 2010-11. Last season (2010-11), Craighead gave major minutes to five freshmen and three sophomores as the Hornets had to rebuild following the successful 2009-10 campaign. The development of young players was most obvious with sophomore forward Kylie Kuhns, who was a revelation during a trying season. Kuhns ranked No. 1 in the Big Sky Conference and No. 12 in the nation in rebounds, averaging 11.1 boards per game, and she set the single-game school record with 23 rebounds against San Francisco. The Salem, Ore. native also ranked No. 3 in the Big Sky Conference in scoring (15.9), No. 2 in field goal percentage (.497) and No. 3 in blocks (1.2 per game). In 2009-10, her first full season as head coach, Craighead led the Hornets to a 15-15 overall record and 10-6 mark in Big Sky Conference play the most league wins in school history. Craighead helped turn seniors Charday Hunt and Erika Edwards into arguably the conference’s top 1-2 scoring punch that season. Hunt and Edwards combined to average 28.5 points per game and knocked down 121 3-point baskets. Hunt earned first-team all-Big Sky Conference honors for her efforts while Edwards was named second team all-conference. It was the first time in school history that Sacramento State placed a player on both the all-league first and second teams in the same season. Craighead was named the Hornets’ head coach on May 1, 2009, and was the youngest Division I head coach in her first season. She spent the 200708 season as the team’s top assistant, before being promoted to associate head coach by former head coach Dan Muscatell in the summer of 2008. Prior to her time in the Green and Gold, Craighead spent two years as an assistant at Portland State. She served as the Vikings’ recruiting coordinator and also worked with the post players. Before she coached at Portland State, Craighead was an assistant at Div. II powerhouse Seattle Pacific under the guidance of two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell. Craighead served as Presnell’s top assistant for two seasons, and coached Seattle Pacific to a 99-75 win over Alaska Fairbanks on Dec. 4, 2004, while Presnell was on leave. Seattle Pacific finished the 2004-05 season ranked No. 2 in the nation. Craighead played collegiately at the University of Oregon, helping the Ducks to three NCAA Tournament appearances in her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons before she led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship as a senior. She finished her career second on the school’s career list for 3-point field goals with 182 and ranked No. 7 in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.9 percent. Craighead was an honorable mention academic all-Pac 10 selection in 2002. She graduated from Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies. A native of Elma, Wash., Craighead attended Elma High School, where she was the Washington 2A Player of the Year and a four-time all-league selection. She finished her career setting school records for points (1,669), assists (653), steals (405) and blocked shots (168).

BILL BAXTER FIRST SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH UC DAVIS, 1973

Sacramento State women’s basketball head coach Jamie Craighead and director of athletics Terry Wanless announced the addition of former El Camino High School head coach Bill Baxter to the women’s basketball coaching staff on Aug. 1, 2011. “I am thrilled to welcome Bill to our coaching staff,” Craighead said. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, and will be a great asset to our program. He also has a tremendous passion and enthusiasm for teaching that our players will enjoy. Bill is a perfect fit for this position and our staff.” Baxter will primarily coach defense, adding his full-court pressure style to Craighead’s run-and-gun offensive system. He will also coach post players, recruit locally and assist in opponent scouting. “We are very excited to bring Bill to Sacramento State and into our women’s basketball program,” Wanless said. “He has great credibility in the Sacramento community and will open up many opportunities for our program.” Baxter, who holds a Sac-Joaquin Section record with 601 career wins, coached the Eagles for 24 years, taking his teams to the playoffs each season. His teams at El Camino won 14 league titles, five Sac-Joaquin Section championships and made 10 section title game appearances. He took his teams to five NorCal championship games, winning three NorCal titles, while his 1993-94 squad went a perfect 36-0 en route to a CIF state championship. In his last season (2010-11), Baxter coached El Camino to the semifinals of the section playoffs and advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs. While at El Camino, Baxter coached current women’s basketball assistant coach Jourdan Willard. In addition to coaching women’s basketball for the Eagles, Baxter was the water polo and swimming coach from 1974-87, where he won a combined 31 league titles with the men’s and women’s teams in the two sports. He started teaching at El Camino in 1974 and ascended to the school’s athletics director position in 1994. Baxter is a 1973 graduate of UC Davis. He coached the freshman men’s basketball team at his alma mater from 1972-74 and was also an assistant coach for the Cosumnes River College men’s basketball team from 1974-76. Baxter and his wife Michelle, a teacher at Oakmont High School, have two children – daughter Cassie and son Kyle. Cassie is an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Cal State East Bay and Kyle is a senior on the men’s basketball team at Humboldt State.

JOURDAN WILLARD SECOND SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH SACRAMENTO STATE, 2009

Jourdan Willard begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Sacramento State women’s basketball team. Willard had previously spent the 2009-10 season as the director of basketball operations and the 2008-09 season as the team’s undergraduate assistant coach. For the 2011-12 season, Willard is the team’s recruiting and team travel coordinator and will work with post players. She will also manage preseason and postseason conditioning and assist in opponent scouting. Willard spent two seasons (2006-08) as a letterwinner for the Sacramento State women’s basketball team before seeing her playing career end prematurely due to a hip injury. She appeared in 19 contests in 2007-08, making one start at the forward position, and led the team in field goal percentage (50%) despite being unable to practice for the majority of the season. During the 2006-07 season, she started 15 of the final 17 games of the season after sitting out the first 13 games of the season due to NCAA transfer regulations, averaging 6.2 points per game. Willard had four double-figure scoring games and two nine-rebound performances. She posted a career-high 15 points against Portland State, shooting a career best 6-of-10 from the field. She is a product of El Camino HS in Sacramento, where she is the school’s second all-time leading scorer. Willard was a two-time first team all-Capital Athletic League choice for the Eagles. Willard graduated from Sacramento State in 2009 with a degree in business administration.

SHAQUALA WILLIAMS SECOND SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH OREGON, 2002

Shaquala Williams rejoined the Sacramento State women’s basketball coaching staff on Sept. 6, 2011 after serving as an assistant coach under Dan Muscatell during the 2003-04 season. For the 2011-12 season, Williams will serve as the Hornets’ academic and community service coordinator, film exchange coordinator and assist in recruiting and opponent scouting. She will be responsible for developing point guards and shooting guards and will also organize the Full Court Press Booster Club as well. The former University of Oregon standout point guard played for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks in 2003. Williams was a third-round draft pick of the Cleveland Rockers in the 2003 WNBA draft before being traded to the Sparks. After her stint with the Sparks, she played in Greece and Turkey before returning to take a job on the Vanderbilt coaching staff in 2006. Williams then spent the next four years in Nashville, Tenn., running a basketball skills academy and serving as the director of sports and fitness at a health club. A Portland, Ore., native, Williams played for the Ducks alongside Sacramento State head coach Jamie Craighead from 1998-2002. Williams was the Pac-10 Conference’s leading scorer (17.7 ppg) and player of the year for the 1999-00 season. She was a three-time all-Pac-10 selection (199899, 1999-00 and 2001-02) and set the league’s single season free throw record after shooting 90.8 percent from the line during the 2001-02 season. In her first season with the Ducks, Williams was named Pac-10 freshman of the year in 1998-99.

HORNETS’ ONLY RETIRED JERSEY - KRISTY RYAN After four stellar seasons with the Hornets, Sacramento State retired its first women’s basketball jersey in honor of Kristy Ryan in a halftime ceremony at The Nest on Dec. 20, 2003. Ryan starred for the Hornets from 1990-94 and still owns most of the scoring records in school history. The Cool, Calif., native capped off her career by leading the country in scoring with 28.0 points per game and finishing third in the nation in rebounding with 13.3 per game during her senior season. That year, Ryan earned second team All-America honors as a player and second team Academic All-America honors as a student-athlete. In addition, she was named the ARCO am/pm Northern California Women’s NCAA Player of the Year. During the 1993-94 season, Ryan set school records for points (727), points per game (28.0), rebounds (347), rebounds per game (13.3), free throws made (245) and field goals made (240). Ryan was named MVP at the UC Irvine Marriott Freedom Bowl Classic after scoring a career-high 45 points and recording 15 rebounds against the Anteathers on Dec. 4, 1993. Her play not only made a name for herself, but drew national media attention to Sacramento State in 1993-94. Ryan’s accolades were featured in the USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury-News and The Sacramento Bee. Among the school’s career leaders, she ranks first in points (2,064), field goals (733), free throws (572) and steals (179), second in rebounds (911) and tied for seventh in blocks (52). Following her career at Sacramento State, Ryan played professionally in Europe until 2000.

ADMINISTRATION UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dr. Alexander Gonzalez Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s degree in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Dr. Terry Wanless Dr. Terry Wanless’ nine-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 20-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last five years as the Hornets have combined to win 34 conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during the 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11 academic years. In addition, the program claimed the 2010-11 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Points Title. This past year, the program finished 119th out of 345 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the highest ranked team in the Big Sky Conference. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornets football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and recently completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee.

STUDENT-ATHLETE RESOURCE CENTER The Student-Athlete Resource Center was created in March 2006 in an effort to combine three very important Student Affairs’ programs that provide valuable services to Hornet student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The programs of Athletic Academic Services, Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development, and NCAA Compliance and Financial Services combine to provide student-athletes with the support to develop as independent and successful

THE CAPITOL BUILDING The California State Capitol is home to the government of California. The building houses the bicameral state legislature and the office of the governor. The Neoclassical structure was completed between 1861 and 1874 at the west end of Capitol Park, which is framed by L Street to the north, N Street to the south, 10th Street to the west, and 15th Street to the east. The Capitol and grounds were listed on the office of the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and listed as a California Historical Landmark during 1974, with a re-dedication on January 9, 1982 to commemorate the close of the bicentennial restoration project. The California Senate chamber seats its 40 members in a large chamber room decorated in red, which is a reference to the British House of Lords, also the upper house of a bicameral legislature. The Latin phrase “Senatoris est civitatis libertatem tueri” [“It is the duty of a Senator to protect the liberty of the people”] lines a wall in the chamber.

MIDTOWN Going to school and living in an urban area has its advantages. Midtown is a perfect example of that.

Top: Sacramento’s midtown neighborhood features many restaurants and shops. Left: There are a myriad of old Victorian homes that have been renovated into apartments in midtown.

The neighborhood, bordered by R Street on the South, J Street on the North, 16th Street on the West and 30th Street on the East, is home to many Hornets.

Below: Tree-lined streets and wide sidewalks make midtown an inviting place to live.

A large number of Sacramento State students live in Midtown due to the area’s fun and vibrant atmosphere and the numerous public transportation options available. Students can take both bus and light rail to get to campus. It is a largely residential community with treelined streets and old Victorians. It is also the center of Sacramento’s art, music, and cultural scene. Boutiques, bars, clubs and upscale and casual dining abound and Midtown has the only winery located in the greater urban area.

Midtown hosts the famous “Second Saturday” street fair on the second Saturday of each month, which attracts thousands of visitors. Midtown is known for being pedestrianfriendly and bike-friendly with continuous marked bike-lanes throughout the neighborhood and a bike path connecting to the American River Parkway which extends to Folsom.

OLD SACRAMENTO In 1839, John Sutter arrived on the shore of the American River near its confluence with the Sacramento River. With the promise of a Mexican land grant, Sutter and his landing party established Sutter's Fort.

In 1853, a mammoth project was proposed to raise the city above the flood level. The ambitious and expensive proposal was not fully accepted until another devastating flood swept through the city in 1862. Within a few years, thousands of cubic yards of earth were brought in on wagons and the daring scheme to raise the street level began. The original street level can be seen throughout Old Sacramento under the boardwalks and in basements.

As the settlement grew and became permanent, it attracted other businessmen looking for opportunities. Sutter and the people he attracted created a commercial center in the area, but it was the Gold Rush in 1848 that created the City of Sacramento. When gold was discovered in the nearby foothills by James Marshall, local merchant Sam Brannan rushed to open a store near the Sacramento River to take advantage of the convenient waterfront location. What was then called Sutter’s Embarcadero was soon known as the City of Sacramento and now Old Sacramento. The city rapidly grew into a trading center for miners outfitting themselves for the gold fields. Early Sacramento’s waterfront location was

prime for commercial success, but was prone to severe flooding. The city also fell victim to repeated fires engulfing its hastily constructed buildings composed mainly of wood and canvas. In 1850 the new city experienced its first devastating flood, and in 1852, the city was again wiped out by high water. It was apparent that drastic measures would have to be taken if it was to be saved.

In the mid-1960’s, a plan was set forth to redevelop the area and through it, the first historic district in the West was created. Today, with 53 historic buildings, Old Sacramento has more buildings of historic value condensed into its 28 acres than most areas of similar size in the west. The area has flourished and is once again a thriving commercial center. Many restaurants, shops, clubs and a comedy club line the wooden sidewalks of a popular hangout for Sacramento locals and tourists alike.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Sacramento is home to a wide variety of professional sports - from basketball to baseball and football to soccer. The highlight of that group is the Sacramento Kings. The local NBA franchise features players such as Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette. The Kings play at Power Balance Pavilion in Natomas, a neighborhood north of downtown Sacramento. The Sacramento River Cats - the AAA affiliate of the Oakland A’s - play home games from April through early September at Raley Field in West Sacramento. The local professional sports scene also features the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain Lions, which play their home games on campus at Hornet Stadium, and the Sacramento Gold FC soccer club. The Folsom Rodeo is a popular event each summer, as well as the Tour of California bike race and many golf tournaments.
