The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks.

The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Fresno State won the last title in 2008 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

FACILITIES

Sacramento State trains at Technique Gymnastics located near campus in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Hornets have the luxury of practicing in the 38,000-square foot facility which is one of the largest and best equipped gymnastics training centers in the West. The enormous facility allows Sacramento State gymnasts to train throughout their practice session without having to compete for time on the equipment. Technique features three full-sized floors, a tumble track, three vault runways and tables, eight competition beams and four sets of bars. In addition, it also has over 17,000 square feet of foam pits for added safety. On campus, the team is able to condition in the Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse located on the south end of campus. Under the watch of Strength and Conditioning Director Terrance Brooks and assistant Adam Craft, the Hornets perform their workouts in a state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room.

Why Sacramento State? The Team

Being a part of the team is more than just practices and meets. Their close-knit relationship is evident throughout the year as the team spends most of its non-gymnastics time together, performing community service, attending other sporting events and celebrating holidays and birthdays. One of the yearly highlights is the team’s preseason trip. This past fall, the Hornets traveled to the Calavares Big Trees for a weekend of hiking, games and bonding. “I always felt everyone had my back, especially the coaches and my team. When I’d get knocked down, I had 20 hands helping me back up. With the support, it helped me become a better athlete and person.” - Nicole Giao, ‘08

The Coaches

The 2011 season marks the 26th year that head coach Kim Hughes and assistant coach Randy Solorio have worked together on the coaching staff. The pair have elevated Sacramento State from the AIAW to Div. II and eventually Div. I. The Hornets have enjoyed unprecedented success in their tenure. Hughes is beginning his 30th season as the head coach and his 32nd with the program, while Solorio is entering his 26th season. Former Hornet Jamie Donkin is in her eighth year as a member of the staff. “I decided to come to Sacramento State because of the coaching staff. When you get here, they become more than just coaches to you.” - Amanda Bieber, Senior

The Success

After high-level national success at the Div. II level, Sacramento State made the jump to Div. I in 1992. Sacramento State broke through with its first NCAA regional appearance in 1999. From that point, the Hornets have been a force in the West, claiming seven conference championships and being represented at the NCAA Regionals every year. The team has also defeated at least one top 25 team in four of the last five years. “Being a part of a winning team is something that I will never forget. There’s something special knowing that you were able to carry on the tradition. I still get chills thinking about it.” - Melissa Genovese, ‘08

The Support

Part of the team’s success has been a dominating record at home which is aided by a great crowd. Despite the cozy confines of the Hornets Nest, Sacramento State has one of the best gymnastic environments in the WAC. In the spring of 2009, an overflow crowd was on hand for the WAC Championships and helped push the team to a second-place showing. Outside of competition, the team is aided by a medical staff which features athletic trainers, doctors and surgeons. Hornet gymnasts also have the availability of academic advisors and tutors to help them stay on course to graduate and succeed in the classroom.

2011 SACRAMENTO STATE GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK

Rebuilding. Its a word that coaches hate to use when describing their team, but it is the best selection when describing the 2011 Sacramento State gymnastics program. The graduation of four seniors who were each fixtures in the lineup throughout their careers, coupled with the absence of defending Western Athletic Conference beam champion Cayla Boyce, leaves the Hornets with a lot of holes to fill heading into the year. Despite the challenges, head coach Kim Hughes believes that this team has the ability to surprise some people and return the Hornets into the WAC hunt. “This team is going to get better each week during the season,” Hughes said. “Although we are rebuilding, we are still talented.” Rising to the top of the conference is nothing new for Sacramento State. The team has won seven conference titles since 2000 and added a second-place finish in 2009. Last season, the Hornets finished a disappointing sixth at the WAC Championships — a point which served as motivation during the offseason.

8

“I don’t think anybody was happy with where we placed last season,” Hughes said. “The team worked extremely hard to prepare for this year and has put it behind them. “Since we started training at the start of the (school) year, there has not been one mention of last year. Everyone is on the same page with the goal of moving forward.” Helping guide the team are co-captains Amanda Blauvelt and Boyce. “This is the most cohesive group that I can remember in a long time,” Hughes said. “The leadership is there with our captains, everyone is coachable and there is just a different dynamic in the gym.” While Boyce will do her part as a captain, she will be difficult to replace in competition. After concluding her season as the NCAA West Regional, Boyce underwent surgery on her right shoulder which will force her to miss the 2011 campaign. The Lewisville, Idaho, native finished first on beam in six meets last season and was also a key contributor on floor.

“Cayla is an enormous loss for this year but it is beneficial for the program,” Hughes said. “I believe that once she is healthy, she will become a tremendous all-arounder for her final two seasons.” Seniors Jasmine Lipka and Blauvelt as well as a group of newcomers which includes Washington transfer Kailey Hansen will likely be counted on to pick up some of the slack left by Boyce. “Jasmine’s impact was such a change for her,” Hughes said of the Anchorage, Alaska, native who broke into the lineup in three events after rarely competing her first two years. “It took recreating herself in the sport in terms of her dedication and commitment. This year, she has a chance to become an all-arounder.” The Hornets open the season at home on Jan. 7 in a four-team meet which includes Alaska Anchorage, Central Michigan and WisconsinLa Crosse. The team will also have home meets against Utah State, Denver, San Jose State, Boise State and UC Davis. The WAC Championships will take place on March 19 at San Jose State.

2011 SACRAMENTO STATE GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK With five returners who all competed on vault last season, including NCAA regional qualifier Nicole Meiller, vault should be a much stronger event for Sacramento State in 2011. Meiller qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a freshman after recording a team-leading RQS of 9.740. The Aurora, Ill., native was easily the most consistent member of the team with six scores above 9.700, including a career best 9.825 at the WAC Championships. Also back are seniors Amanda Bieber and Amanda Blauvelt, and juniors Chantal Angyal and Emiko Ono. Blauvelt averaged 9.650 last season for the highest average among the returners. Bieber and Angyal have both overcome significant injuries in the last two seasons to return to “This is possibly the best vault form. Bieber owns a career team we have had in many high of 9.750 while Angyal has scored 9.700. Ono comyears. There is the potential peted for Sacramento State that by the end of the year we in nine meets last season and could have six 10.0 vaults in the had an RQS of 9.445.

lineup.”

“We were not competitive on vault last season,” Hughes said. “Our returners knew they had to step up for this season, and so far, they have shown that ability. We also recruited vault pretty hard and that should help pay off right away.” Newcomers Kailey Hansen, Maddie Montoya and Katie Osaki will all push the returners for a starting spot. Senior Jasmine Lipka and junior Mary Peck will also look to crack the vault lineup for the first time.

Nicole Meiller (far right) qualified for the NCAA regionals as a true freshman on vault with a team-best RQS of 9.740. Freshman Katie Osaki (near) is one of several newcomers who will compete for a spot in the lineup in 2011.

2011 SACRAMENTO STATE GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK

BARS

The good news for Sacramento State is that Amanda Blauvelt, Nicole Meiller and Jasmine Lipka all return to the bars lineup for 2011. The bad news is that outside of the three, the Hornets have just two other gymnasts (Emiko Ono and Lissa Zamolo) who have competed on the apparatus as a collegiate student-athlete. Blauvelt anchored the rotation for much of last year, competing on bars in all 11 meets and leading the team with an RQS of 9.745. The senior scored a career high 9.800 in meets at Stanford and at home against San Jose State. Meiller was also a constant in the lineup where she showed her consistency as a freshman with an average of 9.710 and an RQS of 9.750. Her final six routines of the year scored 9.700 or higher, with a best of 9.775 at UC Davis. Lipka cracked the bars lineup for the first time in her career and responded with an RQS of 9.685. She had four routines of at least 9.700, including a career best 9.750 at home against Cal State Fullerton and Southern Utah. “Going into the year, bars is our biggest question mark,” Hughes said. “We have a nice group of veterans but have been struggling to find depth.” Ono and Zamolo are two of the returners who are hoping to help with that problem. In her first season with the team after transferring from BYU, Ono made the bar lineup in one meet and also had four exhibitions. Zamolo has not competed on bars since the first meet of her freshman season in 2007 but has the coaching staff excited about her potential. Among the newcomers, Hughes believes that Kailey Hansen and Kaila Kilwein will have the best opportunity to win a spot. The duo will also be challenged by sophomore Bethany Barrick and freshmen Ashley Wooff and Elideth Guerrero.

Amanda Blauvelt (left) and Jasmine Lipka (right) are two of the top three returners on bars for Sacramento State. Both competed in all 11 regular season meets for the team a year ago.

2011 SACRAMENTO STATE GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK Over the last four years, Sacramento State has used beam as the one rotation where the Hornets could regularly separate themselves from the competition. During that window of time, the team has recorded the top 10 scores on the event in school history. While the top three individual performances have also come in that span, it has been a balanced-team philosophy that has helped propel Sacramento State to the high marks. Even with the loss of Cayla Boyce, the Hornets hope that the depth will, once again, be able to carry the team. Boyce was dominant in 2010, finishing first in six of her 12 meets, including the WAC Championships where she scored 9.875. She finished the year with an RQS of 9.830 and had five scores of 9.800 or better. To help ease the burden, Sacramento State will turn to a pair of freshmen in Kailey Hansen and Elideth Guerrero. Hansen comes to the team after redshirting at Washington in 2010. Guerrero was the 2010 Region I Level 10 beam champion and features an extremely rare flick-lay-lay combination. “Kailey has an explosive, exciting style,” Hughes said. “People are drawn to watch her perform. She has dynamic leaps and jumps with amazing flexibility. “Elideth will become the first Hornet to perform a flick-lay-lay in school history,” Hughes commented. “She has exceptional skills with huge bonus and has proven she can compete at a high level.” Jasmine Lipka, Lissa Zamolo and Mary Peck are also veterans who have been a part of the team’s success. Both Lipka and Zamolo have scored over 9.800 during their career. According to Hughes, the final spot in the lineup will likely come down to Amanda Blauvelt, Chantal Angyal and Amanda Bieber. Lissa Zamolo (top) has been a member of the beam lineup since 2007. During her career, the team has recorded the top 10 totals on beam in program history. Kailey Hansen (left) will try to carry on a tradition which has seen a Hornet win two individual WAC titles in the last four years.

2011 SACRAMENTO STATE GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK Depth will not be one of the issues facing the Hornets on floor. Even with the graduation of four-year starter Eryn Stubblefield and injuries to Cayla Boyce and Lissa Zamolo, Sacramento State still has the luxury of featuring six gymnasts who have all competed in the event. Couple that group with five returners who are challenging for spots gives the coaching staff plenty of options. “At times last year, we had trouble trying to find six for the lineup,” Hughes said. “This year, the group helps push each other. They know that there are a number of capable people fighting to get their spot and that makes everyone better.” The returners are comprised of Chantal Angyal, Bethany Barrick, Amanda Bieber, Amanda Blauvelt, Kaitie Kinser and Jasmine Lipka. Barrick, Kinser and Lipka were each in the lineup for all 11 meets last season. Lipka led the team with an RQS of 9.790. She also set a career best with a 9.900 at Boise State and had four scores of 9.800 or better. Kinser is extremely athletic — she has the ability to perform a double-front — and set a career high with a 9.800 at Boise State. Barrick finished the year with an RQS of 9.725 and set her career mark of 9.800 at San Jose State. “Jasmine has been a four-year starter and is easily our most experienced performer on floor,” Hughes said. “She was, by far, the most consistent on the team last year, hitting all of her routines.” Blauvelt was in the lineup for one meet but also exhibitioned in four others. Angyal and Bieber have both been in on floor in past seasons, but could not compete last year in the event due to injuries. “(Blauvelt) has dramatically improved her consistency,” Hughes said. “She was also able to increase her difficulty, adding a front double-twist, which is an E skill, to her first pass.” Kailey Hansen will highlight the newcomers which will also feature Katie Osaki, Elideth Guerrero, Kaila Kilwein and Maddie Montoya. “As a whole, the newcomers are coming in with a ton of talent and difficulty in their routines,” Hughes said. “Kailey has tremendous potential and I believe she could become one of the best in school history. “I also think that Elideth will be able to work her way into the lineup. She works extremely hard in practice and is very coachable.”

Bethany Barrick (far left) and Kaitie Kinser are both slated to perform back-to-back double-backs on floor this season. Both gymnasts were in the lineup for all 11 regular season meets last season.

With 32 years years of coaching experience at Sacramento State, Kim Hughes is synonomous with Hornet gymnastics. The veteran coach is entering his 30th season leading the program and has developed the Hornets from the Div. II ranks to create a highly-competitive team which routinely competes for a bid to the NCAA Div. I postseason. Sacramento State’s success has not been limited to making NCAA Regional appearances. The team has won seven conference titles since 2000, including a pair of Western Athletic Conference crowns. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships (2002-03). After a second-place finish in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. Sacramento State was then invited to join the WAC, and despite tougher competition, the team captured the first two titles in the league winning at Utah State in 2006 and at Southern Utah in 2007. Following the Hornets’ first championship, Hughes was named the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The following year, the Hornets missed their third consecutive WAC title but still managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third season in a row. In 2009, the team hosted the WAC meet for the first time in school history and responded with a second-place finish. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 31 gymnasts to the NCAA Regionals since 1994. That list includes three in 2010, 2009 and 2005, and four in 2004. Hughes also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2010, the squad had a 3.27 team GPA. That total included 16 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and 12 who posted better than a 3.5. His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991-92 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He has twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a co-sponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two sons, 26-year-old Jonathan and 24-year old Jordan.

• Sacramento State is one of the largest universities in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of more than 29,000. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working in internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University recently completed an ambitious master plan (Destination 2010) that included 1.5 million square feet of new building space for additional housing and a recreation and wellness center. The initiative has resulted in new academic and student programs, partnerships with businesses, non-profit and public agencies, modernized classrooms and new facilities for students and faculty. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is available for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and beyond. Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to

improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ eight-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 19-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last four years where the Hornets have combined to win 26 conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. In addition, the program has claimed three straight Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophies. In fact, of the 347 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. This past year (2009-10), the program finished 132nd in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the second highest ranked team in the Big Sky Conference. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornet football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse was the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote also led to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body and open in September of 2010. Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and recently completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee and the Div. I Football Issues Committee. Previously, he was a member of the NCAA Football rules committee and the NCAA Peer Review committee. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling.

Over the last eight years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 2,200 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. At the conclusion of the 2010 spring semester, Hornet student-athletes combined for an overall GPA of 2.98, which is the highest mark since the program joined the Div. I ranks in 1991-92. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that have, and will continue to enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his eight years at Sacramento State, 25 teams and 145 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. During his eight years of leadership, Sacramento State has served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conferences. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughters Hadley and Leah, and son Jack. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis with their daughters Elli and Scarlett.
