Since 2000, Sacramento State has won six conference championships in a span of seven years. The streak began in 2000 when the Hornets won the Western Independent Championships. The team repeated in 2001 while also breaking the school record for high score. In 2002, Sacramento State shifted to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and responded with its third straight crown. The streak was stretched to four in a row in 2003 with another MPSF title. After placing second in 2004, the Hornets capped their tenure in the MPSF with their third title in 2005. In 2006, Sacramento State moved to the Western Athletic Conference and finished first at the meet hosted by Utah State. That season, the Hornets also advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the second time in school history.

Being a part of the Sacramento State gymnastics program is far more than just practice and competition. Over the past few years, the team has traveled to Alaska, Hawaii and Los Angeles. Earlier this fall, the squad was honored at a football game for winning the WAC title (top). The team also conducts an annual triathlon every fall as part of its conditioning program and celebrates nearly every holiday and birthday together.

2007 Hornet Gymnastics OUTLOOK A year after winning the Western Athletic Conference title and advancing to the NCAA West Regional, the Sacramento State gymnastics team heads into the 2007 season looking to add another championship to its total. Over the past seven years, the Hornets have accumulated six conference titles. The streak began with four in a row to begin the century. The 2000 and 2001 teams won the Western Independent title before the 2002 and 2003 squads claimed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crown. After a second place showing at the MPSF meet in 2004, Sacramento State rebounded with another victory in 2005. Things were supposed to become more difficult in 2006 with the move to the WAC. However, Kim Hughes’ team responded to the pressure and finished first over perennial powers such as Boise State, Utah State and Southern Utah. If the team wants a repeat, it is going to have to fill the void left by six graduated seniors — all of whom played a vital role in last season’s success. “Last year we had seniors on every event,” Hughes said. “This season, we are going with untested people.” The Hornets’ cupboard is not entirely bare, as the team returns five gymnasts who saw considerable action last season. Juniors Tiffany Bass, Melissa Genovese, Nicole Giao and Alexis Tsurumoto were all vital members of last season’s team and will be joined by sophomore Marina Borisova who was fifth in the all-around at the West Regional. Senior Sara Williams is also expected to play a larger role in 2007 and will be aided by fellow returner Alyssa Onaga. The incoming class is one of the largest, and most talented, in program history. The group is comprised of eight freshmen, many of which will be in the lineup at the start of the season. Unfortunately, Sacramento State has been plagued by injuries before the season began. Junior Amber Basgall is still recovering from a knee injury suffered at the West Regional and will likely miss most of the season. Senior Courtney Hibler is also rehabbing a knee injury that will limit her season and Tsurumoto broke a finger that will keep her sidelined for a couple of months. Not to be outdone, freshman Ashlei Baker will miss the season with a shoulder injury. “I don’t think I have ever had a team start the year this banged up,” Hughes said. “It has really hurt our depth.” While the injuries pose a significant hurdle for

4

the team to overcome, the schedule will also be a test for the Hornets in 2007. The team opens the season at home against WAC-foe Utah State as well as reigning Div. III national champion Wisconsin-La Crosse. The home schedule also features meets against Boise State, Alaska Anchorage, Pennsylvania, UC Davis and San José State. The WAC Championships will be hosted by Southern Utah on March 31 while the West Regional will take place on Apr. 14 at Cal. “Our goal last season was to finish in the top three in league and advance to the regionals,” Hughes said. “Obviously, we did better than that and will hope to do the same again this season.” A couple of changes may play a big role in who goes to the regionals this year. For the second consecutive season, judging is supposed to be strict and the qualifying process for regionals has also changed. “The judges have been told to score every meet like they do at regionals,” Hughes explained. “That will keep scores lower than they have been in the past. “Also, this year they will take the top 36 teams nationally and not based upon regional rankings.”

most of last season but was thrust into the bars lineup at the West Regional due to the injury to Basgall. Once there, she responded by scoring the highest mark on the team. Genovese competed solely on bars and beam last season but has collegiate experience on vault as a freshman. This season, the team co-captain will be asked to step in on floor for the first time. “Melissa has come in in great shape and you can see the difference in her floor routine,” Hughes said. “She has worked very hard to get to the point where she can compete as an allarounder.” Borisova began competing in the all-around midway through last season and ended the year just shy of the national championships. During the season, she scored above 39.000 on two occasions and finished fifth at the West Regional. Her score at the meet made her the second alternate for the national finals.

Nicole Giao Vault

Marina Borisova All-Around

The Hornets enter the season with more allarounders than they have had in recent memory. Bass, Genovese and Borisova are all slated to compete in all four events while Giao and freshman Eryn Stubblefield could also work their way into the rotation. Bass competed on vault, beam and floor for

With only two starters returning from last season, the vault lineup will have a different look in 2007. Borisova and Giao will anchor the Hornet order and will be helped by fellow returners Bass, Genovese and Williams. Borisova and Giao were two of the three gymnasts from last season to vault in every meet. Borisova led the team with an average of 9.688 while Giao was second at 9.621. Bass, who vaulted as a freshman in 2005, competed in the first four meets last season before being sidelined with a back injury. Genovese was a regular on vault as a freshman but was slowed by a foot injury at the start of last season which limited her to just one exhibition performance.

2007 Hornet Gymnastics Williams is looking to make her vault debut this season as are freshmen Amanda Bieber, Traci Takeda, Kelly Normandin and Stubblefield. “We are counting on our veterans to lead the way,” Hughes said. “Everyone this year does a 9.9 vault and we might have a chance to move Amanda up to a 10.0 by the end of the year.”

Williams is the most experienced of the challengers. As a sophomore, she competed in nine meets and scored a 9.725 at Seattle Pacific. “We have a lot of options because everyone will have bonus in their routines,” Hughes said.

said. “We are just looking for someone who can be the most consistent.”

Tiffany Bass Melissa Genovese Balance Beam

Alexis Tsurumoto Uneven Bars

Bars were supposed to be one of the strongest events for the team with Tsurumoto and newcomer Lauren Dyson pacing the team. However, the finger injury to Tsurumoto will keep her out of the lineup for the opening of the season. “Alexis and Lauren are both terrific bar workers,” Hughes said. “Alexis is very smooth and has proven her ability. Lauren has a unique release move and an E dismount. Both have the potential to score high.” Tsurumoto was a regional qualifier as a freshman and averaged 9.638 last season. During the year, she scored 9.800 or higher in five meets. Borisova and Genovese also return to the lineup as will Bass. The final two spots will be battled for by Williams, Stubblefield, Alyssa Onaga and Takeda. Borisova came on strong at the end of last season, scoring at least a 9.650 in the final four regular season meets. Genovese was the opening act for Sacramento State on bars all season. She also set her career high with a 9.625 on four occasions. Bass went nearly two years between bar performances before scoring 9.675 at the regionals. Prior to that performance, she had not competed since the spring of 2004.

In an unusual twist, Hughes expects beam to be one of the team’s strongest events this season. “We probably have more depth on beam than any other event,” Hughes said. “In the past, vault and bars have been our strongest, but this year it will be beam.” Four starters return from last season, including Genovese who did not record a fall in 13 meets. She finished the season with an average of 9.742 and had at least a 9.750 in her final nine routines. “Melissa is probably the most talented beam worker we have ever had,” Hughes said. “To go an entire season without a fall is incredible. “This year, she has upgraded her routine by adding a triple series.” Bass and Borisova were also in the lineup for every meet last year. Bass averaged 9.583 while Borisova averaged 9.562. The pair both came up big at the WAC Championships, finishing tied for eighth and 10th, respectively. Giao worked her way into the lineup after the first month and never relinquished her spot. The junior set her career high with a 9.850 at Utah State. Newcomers Lissa Zamolo, Elizabeth Norvell and Stubblefield will contend for the final two spots. The trio was slated to be joined by Tsurumoto prior to the her injury. “I believe that the newcomers all have routines that are up to the level of everyone else,” Hughes

Floor Exercise

With the top two gymnasts in the WAC returning on floor, the heart of the Hornet lineup is already secure. Last season, Borisova and Bass finished first and second, respectively, at the WAC Championships to help propel the team to the title. Borisova scored 9.825 at the meet to edge Bass who tallied a 9.800. The pair had been solid throughout the season. Borisova led the team with an average of 9.818 while her floor RQS ranked sixth in the region behind a pair of Olympians. At the regionals, Borisova tied for fifth — marking the highest finish by a Hornet in postseason competition. Bass overcame a rough start to the season by setting her career high with a 9.875 against San José State. She ended the regular season with five consecutive scores over 9.750. While Borisova and Bass have a wealth of experience, the rest of the team is lacking time on the floor. Basgall and Hibler were the only other returners to compete on floor last season but both will miss the year with knee injuries. Giao and Genovese will likely step into the lineup after strong showings in the fall. Giao competed five times as freshman and twice on exhibition last season. Genovese has only one exhibition over the last two years. “Both Nicole and Melissa have brought up their fitness levels and that should make them competitive on floor,” Hughes said. “Both have worked hard to gain an opportunity to make the lineup.” Stubblefield, Zamolo and Bieber will also compete for one of the starting spots.

The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks. This season marks the 45th for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its second year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members Boise State, San José State and Utah State and affiliate members Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Rice won the last title in 2003 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

Meet The Coaches

Head Coach 27th Year Chico State, ’77

After 29 years with Sacramento State women’s gymnastics (26 as head coach), Kim Hughes has developed a program from the Div. II ranks and created a model of success at the Div. I level. However, despite all of his previous success, not many people would have predicted how quickly the Hornets would adapt to the Western Athletic Conference. In its first season in the league, Sacramento State captured the WAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional. That performance made Hughes the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. While the WAC championship was a first for the Hornets, it was definitely not the program’s first league crown. In fact, Sacramento State has won six league titles in the last seven years. The streak began with backto-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships (2002-03). After finishing second in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. For his efforts, Hughes was named MPSF Women’s Gymnastics Coach of the Year following the 2002 season. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 25 gymnasts to the NCAA regional since 1994. That list includes three in 2005 and four in 2004. Hughes has also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997),

Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2006, the team had a 3.05 team gpa. That total included 13 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and seven who posted better than a 3.5. As an educator within the sport of gymnastics, Hughes has received an invitation to teach at the NCAA Youth Education through Sport clinic (YES) since 1995 (and plans to do so again in 2006). His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a cosponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two children, 22-year-old Jonathan and 20-year-old Jordan.

Meet the Coaches

Assistant Coach 22nd Year Sacramento State, ’94 Randy Solorio, the 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has proven a mainstay of Hornet gymnastics in his 21 years of service to the program. “Randy is a motivator as well as a great technician,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “He has a keen ability to be able to deal with the individual student-athlete and help them reach their athletic potential. “He knows how to make gymnastics fun for the athlete.” Hughes and Solorio were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Solorio ended his tenure with the club in 1982 to pursue his theatre career. He would return to Sacramento in 1986 and the longest tenured partnership at Sacramento State began. A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor exercise while competing for the Aggies of UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio is responsible for all aspects of coaching from on-floor duties to recruiting and conditioning. Solorio holds a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise science and a master’s in sports performance from Sacramento State and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He can often be found teaching weight training, ballroom dancing and other physical education classes as part of his campus-wide activity. Recognized as the Western Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997, Solorio is known for his dedication, technical expertise and rapport with student-athletes. Solorio’s coaching experience has varied from high school and club programs to the collegiate level. He was a class and team coach for Byers Gymnastics Center in Sacramento and coached the girls’ gymnastics team at Valley High School. Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit. He recently appeared in a series of commercials for KQCA-58. His daughter, Kaycee Marie, was born the day after the Hornets finished second at the USAG Nationals in 1996. Lois Mattice Athletic Trainer

Assistant Coach 8th Year San Diego State, ’71 Tamara Ross returns as the team’s choreographer for the 2007 season. Ross had previously coached the Hornets from 1998-2001 before taking a two-year break. She returned to the team in 2004 and helped Sacramento State record two of the three best floor scores in school history, including a 49.375 against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. Under Ross’ watch, Stefanie Aeder also set the individual school record on the floor with a 9.950 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional in 2004 and 2005. Sacramento State is one of the largest universities in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of 28,529. At Sacramento State, students enjoy extensive research and internship opportunities. Sacramento is the heart of California government and one of the fastest growing regions in the nation. The University was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947. It moved to its permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. Today, the 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens. It has nearly 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along its river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. The University is in the midst of an ambitious building effort. Recent additions include a five-story classroom building, a continuing education building, a new facility for University-licensed public radio stations, the Alumni Center and a major expansion of the University Union. Sacramento State houses more than 30 research and community service centers, including the Center for California Studies, the Institute for Social Research and the Center for Small Business. The University’s Aquatic Center, about 10 miles east of the University at Lake Natoma, is one of the top rowing venues in the country.

Class Facts

Sacramento State offers 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees in eight Colleges. Teacher education is the largest academic program, followed by business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. The student-to-faculty ratio is 21 to 1; more than 70 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students.

Student Life

Sacramento State students lead active lives outside the classroom. There are numerous activities centered on campus, and plenty of cultural and entertainment opportunities in the surrounding area. Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Value

Sacramento State continues to offer one of the best higher education values in the country. Full-time undergraduate fees for the 2005-06 academic year are $1,536.00 each semester, well below the national average for four-year public institutions. Two-thirds of students receive some form of financial aid, and more than 70 percent of Sacramento State students work.

Did You Know? • More than 80 percent of graduates say their professors were energetic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Almost 700 new school teachers graduate from Sacramento State each year. • Seventy-eight percent of students say that Sacramento State was their first or only choice. • Sacramento State was the site of the 2003, 2005 and 2006 NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships, and the Sacramento State Aquatic Center was the site of the 2004 and 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. Sacramento State will again host the track and field championships in 2007, and the 2007 NCAA Div. I Women’s Volleyball Championships. • Sacramento State hosted the most successful U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials ever in 2000, and hosted the event again in 2004. • Sacramento State has the largest cooperative education program in California. • About 36 percent of Sacramento State students volunteer each year. Onethird of them devote at least 10 hours per week.

dents. Students who attend the University come from the top third of their high school graduating classes. In fact, one of four entering freshmen comes to Sacramento State having posted a gpa of 3.5 or higher during their high school careers. Teaching is a priority and the faculty/ student ratio is one to 21. The majority of classes have fewer than 30 students and are taught by the professor. Adequate classes and course sections are provided so that diligent students will be able to graduate within four years. The University has academic programs which have earned regional, national and in many cases, international reputations for excellence. For example:

Sacramento State education. As the capital of the fifth-largest economy in the world, Sacramento offers students numerous work experience opportunities. About 36 percent of Sacramento State students do volunteer work, gaining valuable work experience while helping their community. Hundreds of students work in government-related internships and fellowships. Others earn academic credit while working in paid positions through the cooperative education program, which is the largest in California. The University’s Career Center offers job databases and sponsors an on-campus recruiting program for students and recent graduates.

The City of Sacramento

Sacramento is a city rich in California history, known for its relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Its mild climate, rivers and nearby recreation areas make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Residents enjoy all the benefits of an urban California lifestyle – art galleries, museums, theater, sports, great restaurants and shopping – yet Sacramento is one of the most affordable big cities in California. Sacramento is the seat of government for the largest state in the nation. It is part of a Capital Region with nearly 2 million people in the heart of Northern California, one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country and the Lake Tahoe region’s ski slopes. Sacramento is also home to the 2002 NBA Pacific Division champion Sacramento Kings. In addition, the city features the Sacramento River Cats (the Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate) and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. Sacramento hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend. It has also become a tourist center with attractions including the State Capitol building, North America’s largest railroad museum, the Old Sacramento historic area, the California State History Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. Founded in 1849, Sacramento is the cultural, education, business and governmental center of a four-county metropolitan region. It has a dynamic business sector, an expanding public transportation system (including light rail), affordable housing, and growing cultural, educational and medical facilities. Sacramento was California’s first charter city and is at the heart of California history – it played an important part of the gold rush, Pony Express and first continental railroad. The confluence of the state’s largest rivers is just a short walk from the steps of City Hall. The city is known for its rich historical heritage, commitment to quality of life, and abundance of trees and parkland. In 2002, TIME magazine called Sacramento “America’s most diverse city.”

2007 Hornet Gymnastics President Alexander Gonzalez

Alexander Gonzalez is the 11th president of California State University, Sacramento – one of the largest campuses in the 23campus California State University system. Gonzalez was appointed president of Sacramento State in July 2003, bringing new energy and a focused vision to the University. Just a few months after arriving, he had mapped out an ambitious “Destination 2010” initiative, which seeks to make the University a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Priorities include creating a more residential campus by more than quadrupling student housing on and near campus; building a new Recreation Wellness and Events Center; and adding new academic buildings. Before coming to Sacramento, Gonzalez served as president of Cal State San Marcos from 1997 to 2003. At San Marcos he oversaw a period of rapid growth as well as many successful fundraising campaigns. He also spent 18 years at Fresno State, starting as an assistant professor in the psychology department, which he later chaired. From 1991 to 1997 he served as the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Gonzalez is on the American Council on Education’s class of 2004 board of directors. He’s also a member of the advisory board for the National Survey of Student Engagement, chair of the board of directors of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and on the board of directors for Valley Vision. Gonzalez previously served on President Bush’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. His service on a number of other boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the agency that accredits higher education institutions in the Western United States. His service to the CSU system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Gonzalez holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in psychology from UC Santa Cruz. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Pomona College, where he graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He spent a year at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow of the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council conducting research on the psychology of time. He also attended Harvard Law School. Gonzalez and his wife Gloria are the parents of two adult sons — Alex and Michael.

Athletics Director Terry Wanless

Overseeing a program on the rise, Dr. Terry Wanless’ four-year tenure with the Hornets has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 14-year Division I history. The most obvious area of change has come in the form of an institutional commitment to facility enhancement. In the spring of 2004, Sacramento State students successfully passed a referendum aimed, in part, at the enhancement of athletic facilities.  The referendum helped pave the way for the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. The facility will create new lockerrooms and offices for the football and track and field teams as well as create a recreation center for the student body. The Spanos Complex is also scheduled to have a 6,000-seat arena for events such as intercollegiate athletics and commencement and an upgraded football stadium. Wanless, entering his fifth year as the Athletics Director at Sacramento State, has been a visible member of the Hornet athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, were at a majority of Hornet home athletic events this past year and supported several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. During his three-year tenure, the department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Additionally, Wanless instituted a number of new programs, including the Athletics Director’s Academic Achievement Award – presented to each studentathlete that achieves a term GPA of 3.0 or higher . Those academic efforts have paid early dividends. Over the last three years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,000 term GPAs of 3.0 or

above. Additionally, 146 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his four years at Sacramento State, 16 teams and 38 individuals have advanced to conference and NCAA postseason competition. In addition, the 2005-06 season saw five sports (volleyball, gymnastics, women’s tennis, men’s tennis and rowing) win their conference title. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. The Hornets have been tabbed to serve as the host institution for two NCAA Div. I championships (outdoor track and field and one in women’s volleyball) in 2007.   Additionally, Sacramento State has served as host to four NCAA championships (three track, two rowing) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field during Wanless’ first three years of leadership. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Tampa, Fla.

Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers Joe Ramos, Hillery Magness and Laef Morris, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides state-of-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to either the head athletic trainers or team physicians. Sacramento State boasts three training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Hornet Stadium fieldhouse). All training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every student-athlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes are three Kaiser physicians, two dentists, one physical therapist and one chiropractor. Sacramento State’s athletic training staff consists of three full-time certified athletic trainers, two graduate assistants and more than 15 students training for a career in sports medicine.
