Being a part of the Sacramento State gymnastics program is far more than just practice and competition. Over the past few years, the team has traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Utah. This past fall, the team held tailgate parties and attended home football games. The Hornets also battled in their annual fall triathlon at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center (above). Keeping with the family theme, the team celebrates nearly every birthday and holiday together.

Season Outlook

We have a group of juniors and seniors that provide great leadership and know what it takes to win.” Genovese is joined in the senior class by Nicole Giao, Alexis Tsurumoto, Alyssa Onaga and Hava McCarter-Ribakoff. Both Giao and Tsurumoto have been regulars in the lineup over the past three seasons but both are battling through preseason injuries which has setback their preparations. Onaga has been a key member on the team during her career providing depth on numerous events and stepping in when needed while McCarter-Ribakoff will compete for the first time since 2005 due to multiple knee injuries. The road to a third straight WAC title will have several obstacles along the way. The 2008 schedule features home meets against Cal State Fullerton, San Jose State, Seattle Pacific, Southern Utah, Alaska Anchorage and UC Davis. The Hornets will also have a road slate that includes conference meets at Utah State and Boise State and a return to Oregon State’s always tough Salbasgeon Suites Invitational. The WAC Championships will be hosted by Boise State on March 29 while the West Regional will take place on April 12 at OSU. The NCAA will also switch to a new format for selecting teams into postseason competition. The Regional Qualifying Score will still be used but schools will no longer be grouped in regions. Instead, the top 36 teams in the nation will earn invitations to Regionals. “It is going to be interesting to see how this works,” Hughes said. “We now have to compete with every team in the country not just the handful in our region.”

Vault

Winning one conference championship is respectable. Winning seven in an eight year span is on the verge of a dynasty. That feat is exactly what the Sacramento State gymnastics program has accomplished since the turn of the millennium. With all but one all-Western Athletic Conference selection returning for the 2008 season, including WAC champions Melissa Genovese (beam) and Marina Borisova (floor), the Hornets will again have the proverbial bulls eye planted on their backs during the upcoming season. Sacramento State’s streak of conference titles began with four in a row to begin the century. The 2000 and 2001 teams won the Western Independent title before the 2002 and 2003 squads claimed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crown. After a second place showing at the MPSF meet in 2004, Sacramento State rebounded with another victory in 2005. Things were supposed to become more difficult in 2006 with the move to the WAC. However, the team responded to the pressure and finished first over perennial powers such as Boise State, Utah State and Southern Utah. Sacramento State then proved the first year was not a fluke by overcoming a series of early season injuries to claim a second straight WAC title in 2007. “The last two years, our goal has been to finish in the top three at conference,” Hughes said. “We have been fortunate to peak at the right time, including last season where we were flawless at the conference meet. “That said, I think this year has a chance to be real exciting because of our upperclassmen.

According to Hughes, one of the most improved areas on the team will come on vault. The primary reason for the high hopes comes from freshman Alycia Chan. The Langley, British Columbia native brings explosive skills to the event which could place her in elite category. “Alycia is an exceptional vaulter,” Hughes explained. “She can do it every day and is very consistent. I would say she could have the same success that Rebecca Seebirt, Nirvana Zaher and Toni Peterson had for us.” Seebirt was a three-time USAG national champion in the event and holds six of the top eight scores in school history. Zaher won two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation titles between 2003-04 while Peterson won the MPSF crown in 2002. Chan, who competes with a Yerchenko layout half, could be one of three Hornets to have a 10.0 start value on vault this season. “Melissa (Genovese) and Marina (Borisova) are also experimenting with a 10.0 vault,” Hughes said. “It would be great to have three vaults of that level after having only one last season.” Other returners from last season’s lineup include Giao and sophomores Amanda Bieber, Eryn Stubblefield and Lissa Zamolo. Giao averaged 9.644 on the event last season and has been in the order for the past three years. “Nicole has been a rock,” Hughes said. “She is always ready to compete.” Newcomers Amanda Blauvelt and Kaitie Kinser will also challenge for a spot as well as redshirt freshman Ashei Baker and junior Amber Basgall.

One of the best competitions this season might come in Sacramento State’s practices on bars. According to Hughes, 12 student-athletes will fight for one of the six spots in the lineup. When healthy, Tsurumoto will anchor the lineup for a fourth straight season. The senior scored 9.775 to tie for 13th at the West Regional last season and has finished first on the event 11 times during her career. “Alexis has had some bad luck the last two years with injuries at the start of the season,” Hughes said. “When she returns, she is as good as anyone in the league.” Basgall will look to shake the rust off after missing last season. The Turlock, Calif., native scored at least 9.700 in her final four meets of 2006 and according to coaches has done “exceptionally well” during the fall. Sophomore Lauren Dyson anchored the lineup for most of last season and averaged 9.738 in her final eight routines. Genovese and Borisova will feature new elements to their routines which will increase their respective levels of difficulty. “Melissa was our most consistent performer last season and has added a Tkachev,” Hughes said. “Marina has completely revamped her routine but is untested.” While the top five spots in the order are pretty solid, the last spot could land in any of the following hands: freshmen Blauvelt, Chan and Jasmine Lipka; sophomores Stubblefield and Traci Takeda and seniors McCarter-Ribakoff and Onaga. “Overall, we are pretty deep on bars,” Hughes said.

The discussion for beam automatically starts with Genovese. Last season, she tied for sixth at the West Regional with a score of 9.825 and won the WAC title with a 9.900. During the year, she finished first in the event five times and led the team with an average of 9.713. “Melissa is the best in school history (on beam),” Hughes said. “She is making a small change to her routine and is definitely a threat to win at conference again.” Like has been the case with the other events, Borisova will also be a factor on beam. She was a first team all-WAC selection in 2007 and averaged 9.648 while competing in every meet. “The consistency and experience that Melissa and Marina bring to beam is immeasurable,” Hughes explained. Stubblefield, Giao and freshman Lissa Zamolo are also expected to be in the lineup. Stubblefield was a first team all-WAC choice and ranked second on the team with an average of 9.702 during her first season. Giao also posted a career best average last year but will likely miss the start of the year on beam due to injury. Zamolo thrived in the top of the order en route to first team all-WAC accolades. “Lissa did a great job in the leadoff spot last season,” Hughes said. “Anyone that is willing to take that role and can respond with consistent, solid scores is a big asset.” Chan brings unique skills, including a pike full, to the event and has what Hughes describes as “the wow factor”. She will be challenged by returners Lizzy Norvell, Amanda Bieber, McCarter-Ribakoff, Takeda and Basgall.

With two WAC titles in as many years, Borisova enters 2008 as the favorite in the conference. The junior has also made a few adjustments to her routine which, according to coaches, makes it one of the toughest in the country. “There are just a handful of collegiate gymnasts in the nation that can throw the same skills that Marina is now doing,” Hughes said. “If she hits, she might have a chance to qualify for nationals.” The Sacramento native finished last season ranked 19th nationally on floor and led the team with an average of 9.815. This year, both her mount and dismount are E’s as she will mount with a full-twisting double-back and dismount with a triple full. Genovese, Chan and Giao should also be regulars on floor. Genovese earned second team all-WAC honors last season and averaged 9.668. She also tallied a career high with a 9.900 against Boise State. Genovese’s routine features new choreography and two double backs. Hughes describes Chan as “extremely fast with unique dance moves.” She is also working on adding a triple by the end of the season. Basgall should provide an added boost to the score if she is able to regain the form she displayed in 2006 where she averaged 9.731. Zamolo, Stubblefield, Onaga and Bieber each competed for Sacramento State last season and will likely be in the lineup at some point during the 2008 campaign. Newcomers Lipka, Kinser, Baker and Amanda Perez will also vie for action during meets.

The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks. This season marks the 46th for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its third year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members Boise State, San Jose State and Utah State and affiliate members Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Rice won the last title in 2003 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

The Coaches

Head Coach 28th Year Chico State, ’77

After 30 years with Sacramento State women’s gymnastics (27 as head coach), Kim Hughes has developed a program from the Div. II ranks and created a model of success at the Div. I level. However, despite all of his previous success, not many people would have predicted how quickly the Hornets would adapt to the Western Athletic Conference. In its first season in the league, Sacramento State captured the WAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional. That performance made Hughes the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The Hornets then tacked on a second title in as many years with a narrow victory in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the third time in school history. The WAC championships are just the latest conquests for the Hornets. In fact, Sacramento State has won seven league titles in the last eight years. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships (2002-03). After finishing second in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. For his efforts, Hughes was named MPSF Women’s Gymnastics Coach of the Year following the 2002 season. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 25 gymnasts to the NCAA regional since 1994. That list includes three in 2005 and four in 2004. Hughes has also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon

to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2007, the squad had a 3.15 team gpa. That total included 13 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and seven who posted better than a 3.5. As an educator within the sport of gymnastics, Hughes has received an invitation to teach at the NCAA Youth Education through Sport clinic (YES) since 1995 (and plans to do so again in 2006). His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a cosponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes also earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two children, 23-year-old Jonathan and 21-year-old Jordan.

The Coaches

Assistant Coach 23rd Year Sacramento State, ’94

Randy Solorio, the 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has proven a mainstay of Hornet gymnastics in his 22 years of service to the program. “Randy is a motivator as well as a great technician,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “He has a keen ability to to deal with the individual studentathlete and help them reach their athletic potential. “He knows how to make gymnastics fun for the athlete.” Hughes and Solorio were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Solorio ended his tenure with the club in 1982 to pursue his theatre career. He would return to Sacramento in 1986 and the longest tenured partnership at Sacramento State began. A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor exercise while competing for the Aggies of UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio is responsible for all aspects of coaching from on-floor duties to recruiting and conditioning. Solorio holds a bachelor of science degree in exercise science and a master’s in sports performance from Sacramento State and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He can often be found teaching weight training, ballroom dancing and other physical education classes as part of his campus-wide activity. Recognized as the Western Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997, Solorio is known for his dedication, technical expertise and rapport with student-athletes. Solorio’s coaching experience has varied from high school and club programs to the collegiate level. He was a class and team coach for Byers Gymnastics Center in Sacramento and coached the girls’ gymnastics team at Valley High School. Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit. He recently appeared in a series of commercials for KQCA-58. His daughter, Kaycee Marie, was born the day after the Hornets finished second at the USAG Nationals in 1996.

Assistant Coach 10th Year San Diego State, ’71

Tamara Ross returns as the team’s choreographer for the 2008 season. Ross had previously coached the Hornets from 1998-2001 before taking a two-year break. She returned to the team in 2004 and helped Sacramento State record two of the three best floor scores in school history, including a 49.375 against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. Under Ross’ watch, Stefanie Aeder also set the individual school record on the floor with a 9.950 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional in 2004 and 2005. She brings a long and varied experience to the position, having been involved with gymnastics coaching in private clubs since 1984. Ross is a member of the NorCal Coaches Association and was named Optional Coach of the Year in 1996. She was voted Choreographer of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1997. In the summer of 2005, Ross was the head coach of the U.S. open women’s gymnastics team at the Maccabi Games in Israel. In that role, she helped lead the team to a second place finish and also had individuals place second on floor and beam. She was again honored in December of 2007 by being named the head coach of the U.S. team at the Pan-Am Maccabi Games in Argentina. Ross was involved with the 1999 USA Gymnastics National Championships which were held in Sacramento and was a member of the Sacramento Sports Commission local organizing committee. She is a 1971 graduate of San Diego State and holds a master’s degree from Sacramento State. Ross and her husband, Arthur, have two sons, Brian and Greg.

The Coaches

Graduate Assistant 5th Year Sacramento State, ’06

Jamie Donkin returns for her fifth season with the Sacramento State coaching staff. After serving as meet manager for two seasons, Donkin shifted her attention to coaching in 2006. This year, she will work primarily on the floor and beam and will continue to assist with choreography. Donkin came to Sacramento State in 2003 and was a member of the gymnastics team that season. During the year, she competed twice on beam, including a 9.650 against Cal State Fullerton. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, Donkin was a California state beam champion at level 8 in 2001. She was also a three-time regional all-around qualifier in 1998, 2001 and 2002. In 1998, she also advanced to nationals. Donkin earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science this past December. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science at Sacramento State.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is the seventh largest university in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of 28,529. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes housing for as many as 5,000 students and an arena and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez is the 11th president of California State University, Sacramento – the capital city’s only comprehensive university and one of the largest campuses in the California State University system. Dr. Gonzalez was appointed President of Sacramento State in 2003, bringing new energy and a focused vision to the University. He is overseeing an initiative known as Destination 2010, which is designed to make Sacramento State a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Among the priorities are enhancing academic programs and student services; new academic buildings; new on- and near-campus student housing; a faculty and staff village near campus; and a new Recreation and Wellness Center. Before coming to Sacramento, Dr. Gonzalez served from 1997 to 2003 as President of Cal State San Marcos. At San Marcos, he oversaw a period of rapid growth as well as many successful fundraising campaigns. He also spent 18 years at Fresno State, starting as a faculty member in the Psychology Department, which he later chaired. From 1991 to 1997, he served as the university’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Gonzalez is a member of the Board of Trustees at Pomona College. He also serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for Valley Vision. Dr. Gonzalez previously served on President Bush’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. His service on a number of

other boards and commissions includes six years as a Commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the agency that accredits higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as Chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His service to the CSU system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Pomona College, where he graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He spent a year at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow of the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council conducting research on the psychology of time. He also attended Harvard Law School. Dr. Gonzalez and his wife Gloria have been married for more than 35 years. They are the parents of two adult sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ five-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 16-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department came to fruition in the 2006-07 academic year where the Hornets claimed an unprecedented eight conference championships. That total included an amazing four titles which came in a four-hour span on May 29. Wanless has also overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change will come in early 2008 with the opening of the Broad Athletic Facility. The building will serve as the home to the Hornet football and track and field programs as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Broad Athletic Facility is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body. Wanless, who is entering his sixth year with the Hornets, has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Additionally, Wanless instituted a number of new programs, including the Athletics Director’s Academic Achievement Award – presented to each student-athlete that achieves a term GPA of 3.0 or higher. Those academic efforts have paid early dividends. Over the last five years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,300 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. Additionally, over 300 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily

visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his five years at Sacramento State, 21 teams and 43 individuals have advanced to conference and NCAA postseason competition. In addition, the 200607 season saw eight sports (volleyball, gymnastics, men’s indoor track and field, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s golf, men’s golf and rowing) win their conference title. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. The Hornets have been tabbed to serve as the host institution for 2007 Div. I Volleyball Championships as well as the 2008 Div. I Women’s Golf West Regional. Additionally, Sacramento State has served as host to six NCAA championships (four track, two rowing) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field during Wanless’ first five years of leadership. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis.
