The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks. This season marks the 51st for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its seventh year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members San Jose State and Utah State and affiliate members Boise State, Denver, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Fresno State won the last title in 2008 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

FACILITIES

Sacramento State has the luxury of three facilities for gymnastics. In the fall of 2012, the team moved its training site to Byers Gymnastics. The gym has been a fixture of gymnastics in the Sacramento area for nearly 40 years and provides the team a state-of-the-art practice center. The facility has five sets of bars (including one over a foam pit), two vault runways, two tumble tracks, two competition floors, 10 balance beams and an inground trampoline . The venue also provides the Hornets an onsite training room for taping and treatment.

On campus, the team is able to condition in the Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse located on the south end of campus. Under the watch of Strength and Conditioning Director Jared Nessland and assistant Tom DiStasio, the Hornets perform their workouts in a state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room.

For meets, Sacramento State competes in the Hornets Nest. The venue regularly draws capacity crowds for meets and provides spectators great views near the action. The latest addition to the Hornets Nest is a new AAI stratum competition floor.

The Team Being a part of the team is more than just practices and meets. Their close-knit relationship is evident throughout the year as the team spends most of its non-gymnastics time together, performing community service, attending other sporting events and celebrating holidays and birthdays. One of the yearly highlights is the team’s preseason trip. This past fall, the Hornets traveled to the Calavares Big Trees for a weekend of hiking, games, singing and bonding.

The Coaches The 2013 season marks the 28th year that head coach Kim Hughes and assistant coach Randy Solorio have worked together on the coaching staff. The pair have elevated Sacramento State from the AIAW to Div. II and eventually Div. I. The Hornets have enjoyed unprecedented success in their tenure. Hughes is beginning his 32nd season as the head coach and his 36th with the program, while Solorio is entering his 28th season. The Success After high-level national success at the Div. II level, Sacramento State made the jump to Div. I in 1992. Sacramento State broke through with its first NCAA regional appearance in 1999. From that point, the Hornets have been a force in the West, claiming seven conference championships and being represented at the NCAA Regionals every year.

mento state? Academics Sacramento State has parlayed its athletics success with accomplishments in the classroom. Since 2000, at least three gymnasts have earned all-academic honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches. The team is also one of only two Western Athletic Conference schools to post an NCAA Academic Progress Rate score of at least 980 for the past seven years.

HORNET GYMNASTICS SEASON OUTLOOK

SEASON OUTLOOK

A year ago, Sacramento State entered a rebuilding project and turned it into an extreme makeover. The Hornets were forced to fill the void of five graduated seniors but relied heavily on a talented freshman class and some key returners to finish second at the Western Athletic Conference Championships. That performance has raised the level of expectations for a team which lost just two routines from its 2012 lineup and features five freshmen. While the youth showed their skill level last season, the leadership for the team belongs to the upperclassmen. Seniors Cayla Beutler and Nicole Meiller will try to steer the team into a postseason berth for the first time since 2008. A fifth-year senior, Beutler has the chance of returning to the all-around after missing all of 2011 due to shoulder surgery. Meiller remains the team’s best bar worker and is a constant in the vault lineup despite a chronic back injury which limits her practice time. “The two are very different but work well together,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “Cayla is the vocal leader while Nicole works well one-on-one with the girls. Both have battled through some tough injuries and do a great job of balancing gymnastics with

school and their personal lives.” Junior Kaila Kilwein will also serve as a team cocaptain along with Meiller. If Beutler competes in the all-around, she likely will not be alone as sophomore Kalliah McCartney and freshman Cassie Benning could also earn spots in all four events. McCartney took home WAC Freshman of the Year honors and advanced to the NCAA West Regional in the all-around in 2012. During the year, she set the school meet record with 39.375 and also tied for second in program history with a 39.350. “I believe that Kalliah is better that she was at this time last year,” Hughes said. “She is mentally and physically prepared for the season and there is no one who works harder than she does.” Benning hopes to follow in McCartney’s footsteps. A local product from Byers Roseville, she finished fourth in the all-around at Level 10 regionals and was a three-time state bar champion. “Cassie is a gamer who steps up when the pressure is on,” Hughes said. “To have a local kid stay home is big for our program.” Junior Kailey Hansen returns as the WAC champion on both beam and floor. Hansen qualified for

the NCAA West Regional in both events after scoring 9.925 on beam and 9.900 on floor at the WAC meet. Other key returners include juniors Elideth Guerrero, Kilwein, Maddie Montoya, Katie Osaki and Ashley Wooff and sophomores Tina Necas, Dallas Smith, Claire Torgerson and Kayla Wonderly. Along with Benning, the freshman class is comprised of Alyssa Anderson, Brennan Bailes, Paige Bottano and Jesse Williams. One change to the WAC this season will be the return of Boise State to the conference. The 2013 championships will take place at Southern Utah on March 23. “Our top goal is to get to regionals as a team,” Hughes said. “Traditionally, we’ve been a slow starting team and we’ve made a commitment to overcome that and still be able to peak at the end of the year.” The team’s schedule also features five home events, including a visit from the Pac-12’s Arizona State. The season opens with the second annual Northern California meet which will also include San Jose State, Stanford and UC Davis on Jan. 4.

HORNET GYMNASTICS VAULT

Sacramento State boasts eight returners who all have experience on vault, including three of the top 10 in school history. “Overall, I’m excited for our potential on vault,” Hughes said. “We have eight 10.0 vaults ready to go before the season begins which is the most I’ve ever had.” Last season, the team set the school meet record with a 49.075 in the home finale. Individually, McCartney (pictured), Hansen and Meiller each cracked the single-season top 10 for vault average. McCartney led the way, averaging 9.779 which ranks third in school history. Her 9.875 at the WAC Championships was the highest score by a Hornet since 2009 and helped her earn first team all-WAC honors. Hansen averaged 9.774 to move into eighth place at Sacramento State and Meiller ranks 10th with an average of 9.735. Meiller was also named second team allWAC after finishing tied for fifth at the conference championship and qualified for the NCAA West Regional as a specialist. Osaki is also expected to return to the lineup and will be joined by Benning. The final spot will be a battle between Beutler, juniors Kilwein and Montoya and sophomores Necas and Torgerson.

BARS Meiller (pictured) pulled off the rare feat of hitting each of her routines in 2012 and will, again, be the anchor of the Hornet lineup in the upcoming season. The senior averaged 9.798 a year ago and ended the year with seven of her final eight regularseason routines scoring 9.800 or better. She finished first in three meets and earned second team all-WAC honors after tying for fourth place. “Nicole is one of the best bar workers I’ve coached,” Hughes said. “Her routine is short and sweet but its her amplitude that makes her stand out.” Beutler, McCartney and Kilwein are each expected to return to the lineup and will likely be joined by Benning. “Not many people can come back from labrum surgery like Cayla (Beutler) has,” Hughes explained. “She’s adapted to the injury and put a lot of work into her form.” Benning was a three-time NorCal state champion on bars at the club level who could make an immediate impact. Returners Ashley Wooff, Necas and Osaki will contend with newcomers Alyssa Anderson, Brennan Bailes, Paige Bottano and Jesse Williams for the final spot.

BEAM With a pair of WAC beam champions on the roster, and the school’s record holder for average, the Hornets have the potential for big scores on beam in 2012. Two years after Beutler (pictured) won the 2010 WAC title on beam, Hansen finished first with a 9.925. The pair, combined with McCartney, will solidify the back half of the lineup for a team which has all six starters returning from 2012. FLOOR Including WAC floor champion Kailey Hansen (pictured), Sacramento State will feature six returners in the event this season. Hansen captured the school’s third floor WAC floor title since 2006 when she scored 9.900 last season. That event helped her advance to the NCAA West Regional as an event specialist. Hansen scored 9.850 or better in six meets and finished the year with an RQS of 9.865 which ranks third in school history. Like on beam, Beutler and McCartney will also be guaranteed spots in the lineup. Beutler will debut a new routine which features just two tumbling passes. “This is the first time we’ve ever had a routine with just two passes,” Hughes said. “I was a little skeptical at first but she had the highest score in the intrasquad meet.” McCartney has also shown the ability to post big numbers as she scored 9.900 in two meets as a freshman. Benning, Smith, Kilwein and Osaki are the likely candidates for the final three spots in the order. “Cassie is powerful,” Hughes said. “She ends with a double pike and it’s as good as anyone’s mount.” Others who could battle for a position include Guerrero, Necas and Torgerson.

KIM HUGHES Head Coach | 32nd Year | Chico State, ‘76 With 36 years of coaching experience at Sacramento State, Kim Hughes is synonymous with Hornet gymnastics. The veteran coach is entering his 32nd season leading the program and has developed the Hornets from the Div. II ranks to create a highly-competitive team which routinely competes for a bid to the NCAA Div. I postseason. Sacramento State’s success has not been limited to making NCAA Regional appearances. The team has won seven conference titles since 2000, including a pair of Western Athletic Conference crowns. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships (2002-03). After a second-place finish in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005.

Sacramento State was then invited to join the WAC, and despite tougher competition, the team captured the first two titles in the league winning at Utah State in 2006 and at Southern Utah in 2007. Following the Hornets’ first championship, Hughes was named the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The following year, the Hornets missed their third consecutive WAC title but still managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third season in a row. In 2009, the team hosted the WAC meet for the first time in school history and responded with a second-place finish. This past season (2012), Hughes guided a Hornets team, which was tabbed to finish fifth in the WAC preseason poll, to second place. For his efforts, he was named the WAC Coach of the Year and also saw Kalliah McCartney earn WAC Freshman of the Year and Kailey Hansen win both beam and floor at the meet.

HORNET GYMNASTICS THE COACHES Individually, the Hornets have advanced 36 gymnasts to the NCAA Regionals since 1994. That list includes three in 2012, 2010, 2009 and 2005, and four in 2004. Hughes also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2011, the squad had a 3.34 team GPA. That total included 12 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and nine who posted better than a 3.5. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991-92 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He has twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a co-sponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two sons, 28-year-old Jonathan and 26-year old Jordan.

Randy Solorio begins his 28th season on the Hornet coaching staff and his second as the team’s associate head coach. The 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Solorio was elevated to his new position following the 2011 season. “Randy is a motivator as well as a great technician,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “He has a keen ability to deal with the individual student-athlete and help them reach their athletic potential. “He knows how to make gymnastics fun for the athlete.” Hughes and Solorio were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Solorio ended his tenure with the club in 1982 to pursue his theatre career. He returned to Sacramento in 1986 as the longest tenured partnership at Sacramento State began. A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor exercise while competing for UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio is responsible for all aspects of coaching from on-floor duties to recruiting and conditioning. Solorio holds a bachelor of science degree in exercise science and a master’s in sports performance from Sacramento State and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He can often be found teaching weight training, ballroom dancing and other physical education classes as part of his campus-wide activity. Recognized as the Western Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997, Solorio is known for his dedication, technical expertise and rapport with student-athletes. Solorio’s coaching experience has varied from high school and club programs to the collegiate level. He currently serves as a class and team coach for Byers Gymnastics Center in Sacramento and coached the girls’ gymnastics team at Valley High School. Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals, commercials and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit. His daughter, Kaycee Marie (pictured, bottom right), was born the day after the Hornets finished second at the USAG Nationals in 1996.

HORNET GYMNASTICS THE COACHES

TANYA HO Assistant Coach | 1st Year | UC Davis, ‘10 Tanya Ho became the newest member of the Hornet coaching staff when she was hired in August of 2012 as an assistant coach. A native of nearby Elk Grove, Ho competed collegiately at UC Davis where she became one of the top gymnasts in Aggie history. During her career, she captured a total of 13 All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors, nine Gymnast of the Week awards, plus an Athlete of the Year nod in 2010. On the larger scene, she became the first Aggie to qualify for an NCAA regional three times, and the second to reach the region meet as an all-arounder in back-to-back years. On March 28, 2008 as a sophomore, Ho became the third UC Davis gymnast to crack the 39-point barrier in the all-around. She hit a 39.025 to capture the MPSF individual championship. Following her competition career, Ho served as an assistant for the Aggies during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Ho graduated from UC Davis with a degree in exercise biology in 2010.

AMANDA BLAUVELT Social Media Coordinator | 2nd Year Amanda Blauvelt enters her second season assisting the program with its social media campaign. A fouryear letterwinner for the Hornets, Blauvelt will continue to coordinate the team’s presence on Facebook and Twitter as well as serving as a team photographer and videographer. From 2008-11 Blauvelt was a member of the Hornet gymnastics team. The Wall, N.J., native competed on vault and bars all four years while also seeing action on floor. She finished first on bars three times during her career and also won an all-around as a senior. Blauvelt is a photography and graphic design double major who will graduate in 2013.

THE WELL Sacramento State opened its state-of-the-art 151,000 square-foot recreation and wellness center, the WELL, prior to the 2010-11 school year and it has already become a hub for students. The facility, which is open year-round, features four basketball courts, a track, a climbing wall, a multi-purpose sport court for indoor soccer and volleyball, racquetball courts, expansive weight-training and cardio areas and full locker rooms. There are also exercise studios where trainers lead classes in everything from yoga and zumba to cycling boot camps and cardio kickboxing. Personal trainers are also available. In addition, The WELL is the home base for Sacramento Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intramurals program, student health center and the Peak Adventures organization. Peak Adventures is an outdoor program that provides recreational and educational opportunities through guided outdoor trips and ropes course programs plus clinics and classes on many outdoor subjects. Peak Adventures also boasts a full-service bike shop and equipment rentals to prepare students for any journey.

RESIDENCE HALLS Sacramento State utilizes six residence hall complexes to house students. American River Courtyard, the newest - completed in 2009, houses upperclassmen in apartment style dorms while Sutter Hall, Sierra Hall, Draper Hall, Jenkins Hall and Desmond Hall feature traditional style dorms for freshmen. All of the residence halls are located on the north edge of campus along the American River, with three buildings on each side of the dining commons. Living on campus can have a significant impact on academic success and personal growth. THE BROAD FIELDHOUSE The newest athletics facility on the Sacramento State campus, the Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse, was completed in 2008.

The facility, located on the south end of Hornet Stadium, provides large meeting rooms that can be divided for small groups.

The facility features locker rooms and coaches offices for the Sacramento State football and track & field programs as well as a new weight room. The Broad also houses an equipment room and training room.

The strength and conditioning staff is housed in the Broad with all teams executing customized workout programs in the 6,000 square-foot weight room.

ATHLETICS CENTER The new Athletics Center was renovated in 2011 with coaches and staff moving in over winter break. The building features two floors, with coaches offices, a kitchen and deck on the top floor plus staff offices and a large lobby on the bottom level. The building is located next to Yosemite Hall, which houses the gym, locker rooms and a training room. The Athletics Center features many study areas for student-athletes and the fastest wireless internet on campus. It is a great place for Hornets to relax between classes. Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003.

Dr. Terry Wanless¹ 10-year tenure as Sacramento State¹s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school¹s 21year Division I history.

As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s degree in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last six years, when the Hornets have won at least five conference championships each year, combining for 39 during that six-year time frame. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during the 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11 academic years. In addition, the program won the Big Sky Conference¹s all-sports points championship in 2010-11, and has claimed four Big Sky Women¹s AllSports Trophies in the last five years. Academically, all 20 of Sacramento State¹s programs exceeded the NCAA¹s Academic Progress Rate (APR) requirements in 2010-11, including four teams that finished among the top 10 percent nationally in their sport. Football, men¹s and women¹s cross country, women¹s indoor track and field, and women¹s outdoor track and field produced the highest APR score among the Big Sky Conference then nine institutions.

STUDENT-ATHLETE RESOURCE CENTER The Student-Athlete Resource Center was created in March 2006 in an effort to combine three very important Student Affairsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; programs that provide valuable services to Hornet student-athletes, coaches, and staff. SPORTS MEDICINE The Sports Medicine Team at Sacramento State provides quality health care to all student-athletes. • HOW TO - Proper technique. • HOW FAST - Speed after great technique. • HOW MUCH - Load, frequency, time, weight, reps, distance and work-rest ratio. The Sacramento State strength and conditioning staff utilizes both the Broad Fieldhouse weight room plus the Hornet Stadium turf and track to conduct workouts. The Broad features 10 Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell area, and numerous machine weights to help strengthen studentathletes and is large enough for 50 student-athletes to work in a circuit. The facility also has equipment used for rehabilitation purposes. Becoming a champion and winning championships is a 52-week commitment. There is no offseason. We always strive to get better.

The famous Tower Bridge connects the Capitol to West Sacramento and Raley Field.

THE CAPITOL BUILDING The California State Capitol is home to the government of California. The building houses the bicameral state legislature and the office of the governor. The Neoclassical structure was completed between 1861 and 1874 at the west end of Capitol Park, which is framed by L Street to the north, N Street to the south, 10th Street to the west, and 15th Street to the east. The Capitol and grounds were listed on the office of the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and listed as a California Historical Landmark during 1974, with a re-dedication on January 9, 1982 to commemorate the close of the bicentennial restoration project.

The California Senate chamber seats its 40 members in a large chamber room decorated in red, which is a reference to the British House of Lords, also the upper house of a bicameral legislature. The Latin phrase “Senatoris est civitatis libertatem tueri” [“It is the duty of a Senator to protect the liberty of the people”] lines a wall in the chamber.

The California Assembly chamber is located at the opposite end of the building. Its green tones are based on those of the British House of Commons, the lower house. The dais rests along a wall shaped like an “E”, with the central projection housing the rostrum. Along the cornice appears a quotation from Abraham

Lincoln in Latin: legislatorum est justas leges condere (“It is the duty of legislators to pass just laws”). Public tours are conducted daily, on the hour, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For tour information, call (916) 324-0333.

MIDTOWN Going to school and living in an urban area has its advantages. Midtown is a perfect example of that.

The neighborhood, bordered by R Street on the South, J Street on the North, 16th Street on the West and 30th Street on the East, is home to many Hornets.

A large number of Sacramento State students live in Midtown due to the area’s fun and vibrant atmosphere and the numerous public transportation options available. Students can take both bus and light rail to get to campus. It is a largely residential community with treelined streets and old Victorians. It is also the center of Sacramento’s art, music, and cultural scene. Boutiques, bars, clubs plus upscale and casual dining abound and Midtown has the only winery located in the greater urban area.

Midtown hosts the famous “Second Saturday” street fair on the second Saturday of each month, which attracts thousands of visitors. Midtown is known for being pedestrianfriendly and bike-friendly with continuous marked bike-lanes throughout the neighborhood and a bike path connecting to the American River Parkway which extends to campus and beyond to Folsom.

OLD SACRAMENTO In 1853, a mammoth project was proposed to raise the city above the flood level. The ambitious and expensive proposal was not fully accepted until another devastating flood swept through the city in 1862. Within a few years, thousands of cubic yards of earth were brought in on wagons and the daring scheme to raise the street level began. The original street level can be seen throughout Old Sacramento under the boardwalks and in basements.

In 1839, John Sutter arrived on the shore of the American River near its confluence with the Sacramento River. With the promise of a Mexican land grant, Sutter and his landing party established Sutter's Fort. As the settlement grew and became permanent, it attracted other businessmen looking for opportunities. Sutter and the people he attracted created a commercial center in the area, but it was the Gold Rush in 1848 that created the City of Sacramento. When gold was discovered in the nearby foothills by James Marshall, local merchant Sam Brannan rushed to open a store near the Sacramento River to take advantage of the convenient waterfront location. What was then called Sutter’s Embarcadero was soon known as the City of Sacramento and now Old Sacramento. The city rapidly grew into a trading center for miners outfitting themselves for the gold fields. Early Sacramento’s waterfront location was

prime for commercial success, but was prone to severe flooding. The city also fell victim to repeated fires engulfing its hastily constructed buildings composed mainly of wood and canvas. In 1850 the new city experienced its first devastating flood, and in 1852, the city was again wiped out by high water. It was apparent that drastic measures would have to be taken if it was to be saved.

In the mid-1960’s, a plan was set forth to redevelop the area and through it, the first historic district in the West was created. Today, with 53 historic buildings, Old Sacramento has more buildings of historic value condensed into its 28 acres than most areas of similar size in the west. Today, “Old Sac” has flourished and is once again a thriving commercial center. Many restaurants, shops, clubs and a comedy club line the wooden sidewalks of a popular hangout for Sacramento locals and tourists alike.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Sacramento is home to a wide variety of professional sports - from basketball to baseball and football to soccer. The highlight of that group is the Sacramento Kings. The local NBA franchise features players such as Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins, Thomas Robinson and Jimmer Fredette. The Kings play in Natomas, a neighborhood north of downtown Sacramento. The Sacramento River Cats - the AAA affiliate of the Oakland Athletics - play home games from April through early September at Raley Field in West Sacramento. The local professional sports scene also features the United Football Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sacramento Mountain Lions, who play their home games at Raley Field, and the Sacramento Gold FC soccer club. The Folsom Rodeo is a popular event each summer, as well as the Tour of California bike race and many local golf tournaments.

SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL Unlike many universities around the country, Sacramento State is just 15 minutes away from an international airport. Student-athletes benefit with easy travel schedules to road games. Sacramento International Airport (SMF), Northern Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gateway to the world, is served by 12 airlines offering nonstop direct flights to cities throughout North America and beyond. On October 6, 2011, SMF opened Central Terminal B, a new, state-of-the art terminal and concourse featuring an exciting mix of local and national retail and restaurant brands. Aeromexico, Alaska, American, Frontier, Hawaiian, Horizon, Jet Blue and Southwest will serve passengers from Central Terminal B. Continental, Delta, United and US Airways will serve passengers from Terminal A. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION The Sacramento Regional Transit District operates 64 bus routes and 37.5 miles of light rail 365 days a year using 76 light rail vehicles, 182 buses and 11 shuttle vans. Buses operate daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every 15 to 75 minutes, depending on the route. Light rail trains begin operation at 4 a.m. Blue Line and Gold Line trains operate until 10:30 p.m. The Gold Lineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University/65th station is just two blocks away from the Sacramento State campus. Students receive a free ride pass. The Hornet Express Shuttle bus also runs from the 65th street station and other locations near campus. During the school year, the Hornet Night Shuttle provides free taxi service backand-forth from campus. An Amtrak rail line also runs into downtown Sacramento, with the station serving the California Zephyr Line, the Coast Starlight Line, the San Joaquin Line, and the Capitol Corridor Line.
