2007 Hornet Track & Field Women’s Season Preview EXPERIENCED HORNETS MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE Senior Anais Castillo-Springer is slated to be the EYING FIRST BIG SKY TITLE team’s only 800 runner during the year. In the longer races, senior Brooklynn Solomon and IN SCHOOL HISTORY Sacramento State director of track and field/cross country Kathleen Raske is learning what a difference a year can make. That extra year is what Raske hopes will elevate the Hornets into Big Sky Conference title contention during the outdoor season. While Sacramento State returns numerous veterans, including Roshena Duree — the 2006 Big Sky Female Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year — it could be the sophomore class that makes the difference at the league championships in Pocatello, Idaho. “Last season, we had 46 new athletes,” Raske explained. “We are hoping that they are ready for super second years. They all now know what to expect and how to prepare. We are much further ahead of where we were last season.”

SPRINTS

Sacramento State’s sprinters serve as a microcosm for the entire team. The group consists of upperclass veterans Duree and junior Tyreina Henley-Henderson. Add in second-year standouts Carly Whitney, Seqoiya Peggese, Morinsola Keshinro, Brittany Thomas, Melissa Tracey and Madeira Macedo and the Hornets expect to score significant points. That corps will also be bolstered with senior Nancy Searcy and redshirt freshman Chauncey David-Jacobs. Peggese, a sophomore from Long Beach, Calif., is the top returner in the 100. Last season, she scored in three events at the Big Sky Indoor Championships, including the 60. After sitting out a year, Searcy returns to the track in 2007 and could make an immediate impact in the sprints. A transfer from Central Michigan, she has two years of collegiate experience. “Nancy is a fifth-year senior who knows how to compete,” Raske said. “She will help in the sprints and relays.” Duree will lead the team in the 200. Last season, she ran 25.40 while competing primarily in the multis. David-Jacobs will also have the opportunity to shine in the 200 and 400. A high school standout who redshirted last season, David-Jacobs was a USA Track All-American in 2004. “We’re very optimistic for Chauncey,” Raske said. “I think she can come in and win both races at the Big Sky meet as well as help us in the relays.” Henley-Henderson also sat out last season due to injuries and looks to regain her form from 2005. “Tyreina is invaluable to the sprint corps,” Raske said. “She can run just about any race but is very dangerous in the 400.” After running 56.36 in the 400 to place third at the Big Sky Championships, Keshinro will look for the league title during her sophomore season. “Morinsola had a great summer,” Raske explained. “She understands what she has to do to be successful and has worked at getting stronger and faster.”

2

junior Sara Baxter will run the 1,500. Senior Michelle Garcia, sophomores Kristina Holtz and Erin Wachter will handle the 5K. Garcia missed all of last season but the coaching staff believes she is returning in the best shape of her career. “Michelle has been phenomenal,” Raske said. “She is training at another level and we expect her to have a strong 5K at the Big Sky meet.” Holtz is coming off a great cross country season which saw her finish seventh at the league championships.

HURDLES

With two of the top hurdlers in the region returning, the Hornets already had one of the top teams in the Big Sky. However, with the addition of Searcy to the lineup, Sacramento State has the potential to send three hurdlers to the national championships according to the coaches. A regional qualifier last season, Duree will look to repeat as the Big Sky champion in the 100-hurdles. Last season she ran sub-14.00 in nine meets and is looking to better her career best of 13.60 which ranks second in school history. “Roshena is a tremendous athlete who is unbeatable when she is at the top of her game,” Raske said. A two-time regional qualifier, Searcy is expected to challenge Duree for the conference’s top spot. “I expect Nancy to duke it out with Roshena in the hurdles,” Raske said. “Either way, we should score a lot of points in the event.” Whitney and freshman Ericka Violett are also expected to run the 100-hurdles. In the 400-hurdles, senior Melissa Tracey will look to continue where she left off last season. In her first year at Sacramento State, Tracey won the Big Sky title and was ranked second in the region with a time of 59.62 “Melissa has improved her strength and conditioning over the summer,” Raske said. “With a year of experience under her belt, she should be able to run sub-58 and get to nationals.” Keshinro will also compete in the 400-hurdles.

JUMPS

Junior Lori Vaught and Peggese will anchor the teams in both the long and triple jumps. The pair will be aided by Searcy and Whitney in the long jump and Duree in the triple. Peggese was a regional qualifier in both events as a true freshman. She finished third in the Big Sky in the long and fourth in the triple during her first season. Vaught also scored in both events, placing fifth in the long and eighth in the triple. She also advanced to the regionals in the long jump. “We have worked with Lori to improve her condi-

tioning,” Raske said. “ Our hope is that her improved health will let her have six strong jumps in both events. She has responded well to the challenge and will see the impact in her results.” Searcy jumped over 19 feet at Central Michigan while Whitney ranked third on the team last season as a freshman. Duree was third at the Big Sky Championships in the triple jump with a career-best 41-01.75. She also advanced to the NCAA West Regional. Sophomore Monique Spencer and junior Melissa Adams will be the leaders in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. Violett is also expected to compete in the pole vault during her freshman season. Last season, Adams moved into second place in school history with a vault of 12-01.50. She also tied for sixth at the Big Sky meet.

THROWS

Junior Ashley Arbuckle and junior Ashley Ast both return to the team with regional experience. Arbuckle qualified in the shot put last season while Ast advanced in the javelin in 2005. Ast was seventh at the Big Sky Championships two seasons ago but a knee injury kept her out last year. During that absence, she also relinquished her school record in the event. “Ashley is fully healthy and looking to take back her school record,” Raske said. Junior Katie Lodato is the team’s top returner in the hammer and also has experience in the shot put and discus. Redshirt freshman Laura Arnold and true freshmen Tatiana Clark, Andrea Behring and Amanda Helmer will also compete during the year.

MULTIS

After a breakthrough year for both Duree and Whitney, Raske has high hopes for both in the heptathlon during the 2007 season. Duree, who had never competed in the multis until last season, responded by placing second at the Big Sky Championships with 5,085 points. “Roshena was impressive in her first year in the multi,” Raske said. “She is learning every day what it takes to be successful. She has the potential to make it all the way to nationals.” Whitney was seventh at the Big Sky meet and went on to earn All-America honors at the USA Junior Nationals during the summer in Indianapolis. “Carly is an athlete who displays her passion every day,” Raske said. “Her teammates recognized this and named her the only sophomore captain on the team. “The heptathlon is her strongest event because she can emotionally stay even-keeled through all seven events.” Freshman Ericka Violett will also compete in the heptathlon.

2007 Hornet Track & Field Men’s Season Preview TALENTED SENIOR CLASS LOOKS TO RISE HORNETS TO TOP OF THE BIG SKY Since her arrival on campus four years ago, Sacramento State director of track and field/cross country Kathleen Raske has preached the team-first approach. That theory is what Raske hopes will lead the Hornets back to the ranks of contenders in the Big Sky Conference this season. “I tell recruits ‘If you want to be an individual don’t come to Sacramento State’,” Raske said. “I believe you can’t win unless you are team.” Helping Raske’s cause this season are three seniors who all could reach the national finals in 2007. David Nichols highlights the list after earning All-America honors in the shot put the last two seasons. On the track, Chauncey Corbin returns and is looking to add to his extensive Big Sky resumé. Raphael McFarlane rounds out the trio in both the sprints and jumps. If things go as planned, the Hornets could return to the top three at the Big Sky championships as well as have all three end their collegiate careers at home at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.

SPRINTS

Corbin and McFarlane are the top two returners in the sprints. Last season, Corbin won the Big Sky crown in the 200 in 21.56 and went on to better his time at the NCAA West Regionals where he ran 21.17 to place ninth. He is also a threat in the 100, where he placed sixth at last season’s Big Sky championships. “Chauncey is going to have a spectacular senior season,” Raske said. “I believe that he has a chance to win four events if you count the 110-hurdles, the 200 and both relays.” McFarlane was a late addition to the team, joining the squad just weeks before the opening on the indoor season. His late arrival did not cause any problems as he finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 60 at the Big Sky Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, he won the Big Sky title in the long jump, was third in the 100, sixth in the triple jump, eighth in the 200 and was part of the 4x100 relay team which also finished first. “Last season Raphael was totally raw,” Raske said. “He has become much stronger and should score in four events as well as the relays again this year.” Freshman Jason Nelson, senior Neal Bland and juniors David Green and Alex Jackson will also see action in the sprints. All four will likely run the 200 and 400.

MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE

Following a strong cross country season, the emerging Sacramento State distance program will attempt to carry its new found success over to the track. Sophomore V.J. Blair returns as the leader in the 800. As a freshman, he finished sixth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. He also finished first in two meets, including the Sacramento Invitational where he ran a team season-best 1:51.97.

Freshmen David Rabinowitz and Jeffrey Paneda will likely join Blair in the 800 during the season. The longer races will feature numerous returners. Sophomore Dominic Vogl, who finished 10th at the Big Sky Cross Country Championships, will turn his attention to the 5K this season after running both the 5K and the steeplechase in 2006. “Dom has the potential to became a very good 5K runner,” Raske said. “He had a strong fall and should be able to carry that momentum into the spring.” Other distance runners include sophomores Daniel Carlson, Daniel Grech and Colin Szehner as well as freshmen Garrett Infausto and Jason Sey. The distance also features a pair of Jose Garcia’s (no relation).

HURDLES

Corbin and Reed will anchor the Hornet attack in the 110-hurdles. Last season, both scored for the team at the Big Sky Championships where Reed was fifth and Corbin sixth. The pair also had success indoors at the league meet placing sixth and seventh, respectively, to score points for the team in the 60-hurdles. While Corbin’s efforts in the hurdles have been strong over the last three years, Raske believes that this season could be a breakout year for the St. Petersburg, Fla., native. “Chauncey has finally figured the hurdles out,” Raske said. “He understands all the little things you have to do to become an elite hurdler.” Reed lived up to high school reputation as a freshman and is poised to, once again, be a threat in the league. This year, he will add the challenge of running the 400-hurdles as well. “A.J. is going to have to adjust to running the 400hurdles,” Raske said. “He ran the long hurdles in high school but there is a big difference between the high school and college races.” Stephone Paige will also run the 400-hurdles. A converted football player, Paige improved throughout last season, concluding the year with a third-place showing at the Big Sky meet. “Stephone has all the physical tools needed to be a hurdler,” Raske said. “If he takes his racing experience, training and understanding, he should win the Big Sky.” Newcomer Jermaine Wilson will also run the 400hurdles during the year.

JUMPS

At first glance, the Hornets’ jumps lineup looks thin. With only three listed jumpers, Sacramento State does not have as many options as it had in the past. However, the quality of jumpers has not diminished and the Hornets should be poised to fight for a couple of Big Sky titles. McFarlane and sophomore David Houghton will double in the long and triple jumps. The reigning Big Sky champion in the long jump, McFarlane will look to defend his title as well as advance to regionals for the second straight year. Last season, he jumped 2408.50 and now ranks fourth in school history. In the triple jump, he placed sixth in the Big Sky

and led the team with a mark of 47-05.00. Houghton finished just outside the scoring in both events last year but the coaching staff believes an extra year of experience could push him into the top eight. Freshman Emilio Hernandez will also compete in a pair of jumps as he is slated for the triple jump and high jump. “Emilio should make an immediate impact in the high jump,” Raske said. “He jumped 6-6 at the state meet as a senior and we are hoping he can clear 6-8 consistently this year.” The pole vault could be the team’s strongest event as Sacramento State features four quality athletes. Junior Daniel Imlach returns after setting the school record last season with a mark of 17-00.75. However, falling short at last season’s Big Sky meet has left Imlach hungry for his first title. “I think Dan was able to learn from what happened last year at the Big Sky meet,” Raske said. “He is extremely talented and has a chance to qualify for nationals.” Junior Jimmy Williamson is also back after clearing 14 feet in a pair of meets in 2005. “Jimmy has emerged during the fall,” Raske said. “He has matured and is building on his experience.” The other two are sophomore Matt Gilbert and freshman Charles Nichols who was eighth at the state high school meet as a senior.

THROWS

A two-time All-American, David Nichols is clearly the leader for the throwers. Last year, Nichols bettered his own school record with a mark of 64-07.00 in the shot put to place sixth in Div. I. He later went on to compete at the USA national championships in Indianapolis. “Dave’s best asset is that he is a competitor,” Raske said. “He is always able to rise to the occasion and throws big at big meets.” Nichols, who has won the last two Big Sky outdoor shot put crowns, will look to add a second indoor title to his resumé after redshirting last year. “Our goal is to have Dave become an indoor AllAmerican and become the first Hornet to achieve that feat,” Raske said. “Outdoors, it would be great for him to end his career with a chance to win a national title at home.” Another regional qualifier, Chris Kirkwood will guide the team in the javelin. Last season, Kirkwood was third at the Big Sky meet and led the team with a throw of 206-06. Freshmen Brennen Phipps, Austin Elmore and Taylor Weldon will add depth in the throws.

MULTIS

Robert Brazier is the team’s lone multi competitor. A junior, Brazier was sixth in the decathlete at the Big Sky Championships last season. “Robert is a great athlete,“ Raske said. “He understands each event better and we are excited for his potential.”

Director of Track and Field/ Cross Country Fourth Year Southern Illinois, ’90 Kathleen Raske is entering her fourth season as Sacramento State’s Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. Raske was named to the position on Aug. 15, 2003. At Sacramento State, Raske oversees all aspects of the men’s and women’s cross country teams as well as the indoor and outdoor track and field programs. In her three years with the program, Raske has led the Hornets to their most success since the team moved to Div. I in 1991-92. In her first year, she guided the men’s outdoor team to a third-place finish at the Big Sky Championships — its highest finish in school history. She also had three individuals (two men, one woman) and two relay teams win event titles during the outdoor season. The outdoor season was capped by having nine men and two women qualify for the NCAA West Regional. Two of those athletes (Robert Linkul and André Wright) advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. During the indoor season, three additional athletes (two women, one man) each won Big Sky event titles. In 2005, Raske coached an unprecendented three student-athletes to the NCAA Championships. While there, all three (Geoff Fong, David Nichols and Brandon Parker) advanced to their event finals. Parker earned All-America status in the long jump while Nichols took home the honor in the shot put. Against Big Sky competition, Raske saw her team win six Big Sky event titles during the 2005 season. That list was highlighted by Parker (long jump) and Nichols (shot put) who each claimed the conference title during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Last year, the honors continued to roll in for Sacramento State. Nichols became the first Hornet to twice be named All-America and Roshena Duree was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. The Hornets also sent 15 individuals and one relay team to the NCAA West Regional and had eight combined event champions at the indoor and outdoor Big Sky meets. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, Raske spent six years as head coach of the Central Michigan women’s cross country and track and field programs. In 2002, she led CMU to its first Mid-American Conference indoor track championship. Following the season, she was named MAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year. In 2000, she guided the Chippewas to the MAC cross country title. Raske also coached 17 individual MAC champions and had 44 athletes earn all-league honors. In her six years, 20 Chippewas qualified for the NCAA Championships, including three All-Americans. Two of those All-Americans came in 2002 when high jumper Suzy Bozin and heptathlete Maria Derezinksi each earned the accolade. Bozin was a three-time MAC champ in the high jump and was the top freshman to compete at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships. She went on to qualify for the NCAA Championships three more times during her career.

A renowned teacher, Raske has not only coached at the collegiate level but also in regional and national competition. This past summer, Raske served as the head women’s coach for the United States national team in its quadrangular meet against Great Britain, China and Russia in Birmingham, England, and featured some of the best Americans. The event was not the first USATF experience for Raske. In 2005, she was an assistant coach for the United States team at the Junior PanAmerican Games. In that role, she worked with the team’s high jumpers and hurdlers. She was also named the coordinator for USATF Olympic Hurdle Development in July of 2003 after serving as the assistant coordinator for three years. In the summer of 1999, she was a manager for the United States team that won the gold medal at the Junior Pan-American Games. Off the track, Raske is the secretary for the USA Track and Field Coaches Advisory Committee. She previously served as secretary for the U.S. Women’s Track Coaches Association for nine years and was on the USTCA Rules Panel Committee. In addition to her committee responsibilities, Raske has also been a speaker on the topic of hurdling and sprinting at major coaching clinics throughout the United States and internationally. Raske is also involved with Athletes in Action. In the summer of 2002, she led a US team to Thailand and Laos. Prior to working at Central Michigan, Raske was an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois. While at Miami, she coached both the men and women in sprints and hurdles. She had six athletes win MAC titles and three advance to the NCAA Championships between 1992-97. One of her top athletes with the RedHawks was Becca Williams. The hurdler was a two-time NCAA All-American and was ranked 20th in the world in the 400-hurdles. From 1989-92, Raske coached at Southern Illinois where she had two athletes win Missouri Valley Conference crowns and two qualify for the NCAA Championships. While at SIU, she oversaw the team’s sprinters, hurdlers, and relay teams. Raske competed at Southern Illinois and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. As a sprinter and hurdler, she was an AllAmerican and holds the conference record in the 200-meter, 55-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles. Raske was named MVP of the Decade by the Gateway Athletic Conference. She has also competed in five U.S. National Championships, including the 1992 Olympic Trials in the 100-meter hurdles. Meet The Coaches

Head Cross Country Coach/ Assistant Track Coach Second Year Methodist College (N.C), ’90 In his second season with the Hornets, Rodney Rothoff is already seeing results with the Sacramento State cross country and distance teams. Rothoff arrived on campus just days before the team’s first cross country meet last season and still managed to see his team post some of the best marks in school history. An experienced collegiate coach, Rothoff took the team one step further this past fall. The Hornet men placed fifth at the Big Sky Championships and were led by Dominic Vogl who placed 10th overall. Vogl’s time at the meet, which was hosted by Sacramento State, also ranks second in school history. The women also had a strong showing with Kristina Holtz improving from 34th in 2005 to placing seventh to earn all-Big Sky honors. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, Rothoff was the head cross country and assistant track coach at Oklahoma from 2002-05. While with the Sooners, Rothoff recruited and coached two All-Americans. His first recruit, Jessica Eldridge, became the first OU woman to win a Big 12 Championship and an NCAA Regional title. In her first two years, Eldridge qualified for six national championships — two each in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Rothoff was named the 2005 NCAA Midwest Region Women’s Distance Assistant Coach of the Year after the Sooners set several school records. The women’s cross country team placed a program-best seventh at the Big 12 Championships and had two athletes qualify for the 1,500 at the outdoor championships after finishing second and third at the regional. In 2005, Rothoff’s runners set 16 Oklahoma school records. One of those was Aldwyn Sappleton, a six-time All-American who was the Big 12 Indoor 800 champion. That year, the Sooner women also recorded their best finish at the Big 12 Championships and two runners (Eldridge and Catherine Odell) finished second and third, respectively in the 1,500 to advance to the outdoor championships. Those two became the first duo of OU women to qualify for the 1,500 in school history. Rothoff’s student-athletes also succeeded in the classroom where the women’s cross country team earned Academic All-America honors each of his three years as coach. In 2005, three Sooners were named ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District. Sappleton also became just the third OU track and field athlete to earn an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Record Book

The re-writing of the Sacramento State record book continued to take place last season, as the Hornets set eight indoor and four outdoor records during the year. The final mark came at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships where David Nichols had a shot put of 64-07.00 to finish sixth overall. Nichols not only broke his own school record, he also became the first Sacramento State student-athlete to become a two-time All-American in the same event since the school moved to Div. I in 1991. Sacramento State began the year with the men and women each setting four indoor records. Ashley Arbuckle destroyed the program record in the shot put and weight throw. Arbuckle bettered the previous shot put record by three-and-a-half feet and beat the weight throw mark by over five feet. Melissa Adams claimed the pole vault record after clearing 11-07.75. The final record came from Virginia Grillo in the 5K. Not to be outdone, the men set records in the pole vault, heptathlon, 3K and 5K. Daniel Imlach broke the pole vault record by one foot with a vault of 16-08.25. Richard Duhamie set the heptathlon record while Dominic Vogl and Steven Schenck moved to the top of the list in the 3K and 5K, respectively. Both teams also had an individual champion at the Big Sky Championships with Catherine Crawford and André Wright winning their respective 60-meter hurdle races. Outdoors, the Hornets added six league titles. Roshena Duree won the 100-hurdles and was also named the Big Sky Female Field Athlete of the Meet. Melissa Tracey added a win in the 400-hurdles. The men were led by Nichols in the shot put, Raphael McFarlane in the long jump, Chauncey Corbin in the 200 and the 4x100 relay team. Imlach and Arbuckle also set the school record in the pole vault and shot put, respectively, while Liz Parsley set the mark in the javelin. The Hornets were represented by 16 entries at the NCAA West Regional and were led by Nichols who finished third in the shot put to earn his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. Once there, he easily advanced to the finals breaking his own school record on each day of the competition.

2007 Hornet Track & Field Hornet Stadium

Hornet Stadium Fast Facts The Sacramento State track and field program begins its ninth season in the renovated Hornet Stadium. Seating just over 21,000, the stadium remains the University’s most impressive athletic facility and the largest track facility in the Big Sky Conference. Thanks to a generous donation by philanthropist Alex G. Spanos, Hornet Stadium underwent a major renovation in May of 1998 to accommodate the upgrades for the 2000 Olympic Trials. Reconstruction of the existing track was completed by August, just three months later. A separate warm-up track followed in 1999. In 2003, upgrades were made to the stadium lighting and a new scoreboard was installed for both track and football. Regarded as one of the fastest surfaces in the country, Hornet Stadium has also hosted the 2001 Junior Olympics, the 2003, 2005 and 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the 2004 U.S Track and Field Olympic Trials. The venue will also be the site of the 2007 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The track has been used by some of the best athletes in the world. Since it was installed in 1999, one world record, six American records, 22 Olympic Trials records, eight U.S. Championship records, nine NCAA records, three American junior records and two national high school records have been set at the facility. That list is surely to grow as the NCAA Championship Meet returns to Sacramento State for one more year. The stadium track is surfaced with Mondo Sportflex Super X and features eight 1.22 meter-wide lanes on the oval and nine lanes for the 200 and 100 meter races. The track has a 37-meter radius with the steeplechase water jump on the inside of the track on the North curve.

Alex G.

Spanos Sports & Recreation Complex The Alex G. Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex is an ambitious project that will change the face and character of Sacramento State. It is a centerpiece of Destination 2010, an initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus. The Complex is named for Alex G. Spanos, who along with his wife Faye, provided the initial leadership gift of $10 million. The University has so far secured $25 million in private support for the Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex, and efforts continue to identify additional private funding. The fee for the project that was supported by students in a 2004 referendum will be fully implemented ($110) in fall of 2006. The Complex includes four primary facilities: The Broad Athletic Facility is a 26,000 square-foot project to the south of the stadium that will include a 5,000 square foot weight room, as well as locker rooms, coaches’ offices and meeting space for football and track and field. It will also have a “Gallery of Champions” in the lobby. It must be completed before construction of the Recreation and Wellness Center can even begin, because parts of that project will be built at the site of the old field house. Groundbreaking took place in fall 2006 with completion expected in late 2007. The Recreation and Wellness Center is currently estimated at 150,000 square feet and will be on the north of the stadium. The facility is envisioned as having such things as a fitness center, recreational courts, rock-climbing walls and a health center. Final programming and design is being completed. Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2008 with completion expected in 2010. The Arena will be to the east of the stadium and is envisioned as seating 6,000 to 8,000 for events such as intercollegiate basketball, commencement and concerts. It is currently expected to be at least 160,000 square feet. The project timeline is still being developed. The Stadium will be renovated, with current seating removed and replaced with a more permanent structure. Concessions and other amenities will be added. Seating capacity and other details are still being developed, as is a project timeline.

2006 Cross Country Hornet Cross Country

The 2006 season marked one of the finest cross country campaigns in school history. The Hornets set numerous personal records during the year and had two athletes named to the all-Big Sky Conference team at the end of the season. Sacramento State’s season began at the Nevada Chase Race where Dominic Vogl finished first overall and helped the team to the team title. The race marked the first of five straight in which Vogl would have the fastest time on the team. Kristina Holtz paced the women — as she would all season — en route to a 12th place showing. The following meet, the team returned home for the Hornet Jamboree where both the men and women finished second in the team standings. Holtz was second overall in the women’s race while Vogl notched his second straight top-10 showing by placing eighth. After competing at the Stanford Invitational, the team travelled to Santa Clara for the Bronco Invitational. Both Vogl and Holtz placed 10th overall to lead their teams and the men finished in third place. The Hornets then turned their attention to the Big Sky Championships which were held in Sacramento for the first time since 1997. The men started the day by placing fifth overall — its best showing since a fourth-place finish in 1996. Individually, Vogl earned all-Big Sky honors by placing 10th in 24:51. His time was the fastest by a Hornet at the Big Sky Championships in school history while his place was the third best. Sacramento State finished seventh in the women’s race and was led by Holtz who finished seventh. The sophomore ran 17:56.2 to record the third-best time in school history at the championships. The final race came at the NCAA West Regional in Portland, Ore. Daniel Carlson guided the men’s team to become the first Hornet to finish ahead of Vogl during the season. Holtz completed her sweep by leading the women.

Part of Sacramento State’s cross country training is to take advantage of the resources available on campus. This past fall, the team worked closely with Prof. Roberto Quintana. Dr. Quintana is the director of human performance research in the department of exercise physiology. Quintana’s specializes in altitude physiology and exercise performance. With his assistance, the team has been able to utilize some of the most advanced training techniques available at this time. Sacramento State also has the services of a registered dietician available. This allows the student-athletes to be able to create menus which best assists their training and recovery processes.

Sacramento State is one of the largest universities in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of 28,529. At Sacramento State, students enjoy extensive research and internship opportunities. Sacramento is the heart of California government and one of the fastest growing regions in the nation. The University was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947. It moved to its permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. Today, the 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens. It has nearly 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along its river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. The University is in the midst of an ambitious building effort. Recent additions include a five-story classroom building, a continuing education building, a new facility for University-licensed public radio stations, the Alumni Center and a major expansion of the University Union. Sacramento State houses more than 30 research and community service centers, including the Center for California Studies, the Institute for Social Research and the Center for Small Business. The University’s Aquatic Center, about 10 miles east of the University at Lake Natoma, is one of the top rowing venues in the country.

Class Facts

Sacramento State offers 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees in eight Colleges. Teacher education is the largest academic program, followed by business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. The student-to-faculty ratio is 21 to 1; more than 70 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students.

Student Life

Sacramento State students lead active lives outside the classroom. There are numerous activities centered on campus, and plenty of cultural and entertainment opportunities in the surrounding area. Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Value

Sacramento State continues to offer one of the best higher education values in the country. Full-time undergraduate fees for the 2005-06 academic year are $1,536.00 each semester, well below the national average for four-year public institutions. Two-thirds of students receive some form of financial aid, and more than 70 percent of Sacramento State students work.

Academics Did You Know? • More than 80 percent of graduates say their professors were energetic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Almost 700 new school teachers graduate from Sacramento State each year. • Seventy-eight percent of students say that Sacramento State was their first or only choice. • Sacramento State was the site of the 2003, 2005 and 2006 NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships, and the Sacramento State Aquatic Center was the site of the 2004 and 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. Sacramento State will again host the track and field championships in 2007, and the 2007 NCAA Div. I Women’s Volleyball Championships. • Sacramento State hosted the most successful U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials ever in 2000, and hosted the event again in 2004. • Sacramento State has the largest cooperative education program in California. • About 36 percent of Sacramento State students volunteer each year. Onethird of them devote at least 10 hours per week.

The campus attracts high caliber students. Students who attend the University come from the top third of their high school graduating classes. In fact, one of four entering freshmen comes to Sacramento State having posted a gpa of 3.5 or higher during their high school careers. Teaching is a priority and the faculty/ student ratio is one to 21. The majority of classes have fewer than 30 students and are taught by the professor. Adequate classes and course sections are provided so that diligent students will be able to graduate within four years. The University has academic programs which have earned regional, national and in many cases, international reputations for excellence. For example: • The computer science program was part of the first group of computer science programs which were accredited in 1986. • The Center for California Studies at Sacramento State serves the entire state as a resource for the history, culture and public policy of California. • Sacramento State recently ranked No. 1 in the nation as a recruitment source for new Hewlett Packard employees. • The criminal justice program, which attracts students from all over the world, is one of the largest in the United States. • Thousands of community clients receive life-enhancing services from the Sacramento State Speech and Hearing Clinic and the Center for Counseling and Diagnostic Services. Other Sacramento State programs, such as the Small Business Assistance Center, offer community and state clients valuable counseling and advice in business matters.

Career Preparation

Preparing for a career is a vital part of a Sacramento State education. As the capital of the fifth-largest economy in the world, Sacramento offers students numerous work experience opportunities. About 36 percent of Sacramento State students do volunteer work, gaining valuable work experience while helping their community. Hundreds of students work in government-related internships and fellowships. Others earn academic credit while working in paid positions through the cooperative education program, which is the largest in California. The University’s Career Center offers job databases and sponsors an on-campus recruiting program for students and recent graduates.

Enrollment

In the fall semester of 2006, Sacramento State had an enrollment of 28,529. These students represent every region of California and the United States as well as 80 countries.

Sacramento is a city rich in California history, known for its relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Its mild climate, rivers and nearby recreation areas make it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Residents enjoy all the benefits of an urban California lifestyle – art galleries, museums, theater, sports, great restaurants and shopping – yet Sacramento is one of the most affordable big cities in California. Sacramento is the seat of government for the largest state in the nation. It is part of a Capital Region with nearly 2 million people in the heart of Northern California, one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country and the Lake Tahoe region’s ski slopes. Sacramento is also home to the 2002 NBA Pacific Division champion Sacramento Kings. In addition, the city features the Sacramento River Cats (the Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate) and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. Sacramento hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend. It has also become a tourist center with attractions including the State Capitol building, North America’s largest railroad museum, the Old Sacramento historic area, the California State History Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. Founded in 1849, Sacramento is the cultural, education, business and governmental center of a four-county metropolitan region. It has a dynamic business sector, an expanding public transportation system (including light rail), affordable housing, and growing cultural, educational and medical facilities. Sacramento was California’s first charter city and is at the heart of California history – it played an important part of the gold rush, Pony Express and first continental railroad. The confluence of the state’s largest rivers is just a short walk from the steps of City Hall. The city is known for its rich historical heritage, commitment to quality of life, and abundance of trees and parkland. In 2002, TIME magazine called Sacramento “America’s most diverse city.”

2007 Hornet Gymnastics President Alexander Gonzalez

Alexander Gonzalez is the 11th president of California State University, Sacramento – one of the largest campuses in the 23campus California State University system. Gonzalez was appointed president of Sacramento State in July 2003, bringing new energy and a focused vision to the University. Just a few months after arriving, he had mapped out an ambitious “Destination 2010” initiative, which seeks to make the University a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Priorities include creating a more residential campus by more than quadrupling student housing on and near campus; building a new Recreation Wellness and Events Center; and adding new academic buildings. Before coming to Sacramento, Gonzalez served as president of Cal State San Marcos from 1997 to 2003. At San Marcos he oversaw a period of rapid growth as well as many successful fundraising campaigns. He also spent 18 years at Fresno State, starting as an assistant professor in the psychology department, which he later chaired. From 1991 to 1997 he served as the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Gonzalez is on the American Council on Education’s class of 2004 board of directors. He’s also a member of the advisory board for the National Survey of Student Engagement, chair of the board of directors of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and on the board of directors for Valley Vision. Gonzalez previously served on President Bush’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. His service on a number of other boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the agency that accredits higher education institutions in the Western United States. His service to the CSU system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Gonzalez holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in psychology from UC Santa Cruz. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Pomona College, where he graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He spent a year at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow of the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council conducting research on the psychology of time. He also attended Harvard Law School. Gonzalez and his wife Gloria are the parents of two adult sons — Alex and Michael.

Athletics Director Terry Wanless

Overseeing a program on the rise, Dr. Terry Wanless’ four-year tenure with the Hornets has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 14-year Division I history. The most obvious area of change has come in the form of an institutional commitment to facility enhancement. In the spring of 2004, Sacramento State students successfully passed a referendum aimed, in part, at the enhancement of athletic facilities. The referendum helped pave the way for the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. The facility will create new lockerrooms and offices for the football and track and field teams as well as create a recreation center for the student body. The Spanos Complex is also scheduled to have a 6,000-seat arena for events such as intercollegiate athletics and commencement and an upgraded football stadium. Wanless, entering his fifth year as the Athletics Director at Sacramento State, has been a visible member of the Hornet athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, were at a majority of Hornet home athletic events this past year and supported several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. During his three-year tenure, the department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Additionally, Wanless instituted a number of new programs, including the Athletics Director’s Academic Achievement Award – presented to each studentathlete that achieves a term GPA of 3.0 or higher . Those academic efforts have paid early dividends. Over the last three years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,000 term GPAs of 3.0 or

above. Additionally, 146 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his four years at Sacramento State, 16 teams and 38 individuals have advanced to conference and NCAA postseason competition. In addition, the 2005-06 season saw five sports (volleyball, gymnastics, women’s tennis, men’s tennis and rowing) win their conference title. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. The Hornets have been tabbed to serve as the host institution for two NCAA Div. I championships (outdoor track and field and one in women’s volleyball) in 2007. Additionally, Sacramento State has served as host to four NCAA championships (three track, two rowing) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field during Wanless’ first three years of leadership. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Tampa, Fla.

Athletic Training

The goal of the athletic training staff is to provide all Sacramento State student-athletes with high quality health care. Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers Joe Ramos, Hillery Magness and Laef Morris, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides state-of-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to either the head athletic trainers or team physicians. Sacramento State boasts three training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Hornet Stadium fieldhouse). All training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every student-athlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes are three Kaiser physicians, two dentists, one physical therapist and one chiropractor. Sacramento State’s athletic training staff consists of three full-time certified athletic trainers, two graduate assistants and more than 15 students training for a career in sports medicine.
