2008 Hornet Track & Field
The 2007 track and field season will be remembered as a monumental one for Sacramento State. The Hornets stunned the Big Sky Conference by winning the men’s indoor team title in February. During the outdoor season, the team advanced a school-record four student-athletes to the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships which were held at Sacramento State for the fourth time in five years. The four were Jody Johnson in the 200, Raphael McFarlane in the 100, David Nichols in the shot put and Nancy Searcy in the 100-hurdles (pictured top l-r).

Spanos Sports & Recreation Complex The Alex G. Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex is an ambitious project that will change the face and character of Sacramento State. It is a centerpiece of Destination 2010, an initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus. The Complex is named for Alex G. Spanos, who along with his wife Faye, provided the initial leadership gift of $10 million. The University has so far secured $25 million in private support for the Spanos Sports and Recreation Complex, and efforts continue to identify additional private funding. The fee for the project that was supported by students in a 2004 referendum was fully implemented ($110) in fall of 2006. The Complex includes four primary facilities: The Broad Athletic Facility is a 26,000 square-foot project to the south of the stadium that will include a 5,000 square foot weight room, as well as locker rooms, coaches’ offices and meeting space for football and track and field. It will also have a “Gallery of Champions” in the lobby. It must be completed before construction of the Recreation and Wellness Center can even begin, because parts of that project will be built at the site of the old field house. Groundbreaking took place in fall 2006 with completion expected in the spring of 2008. The Recreation and Wellness Center is currently estimated at 150,000 square feet and will be on the north of the stadium. The facility is envisioned as having such things as a fitness center, recreational courts, rock-climbing walls and a health center. Final programming and design is being completed. Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2008 with completion expected in 2010. The Arena will be to the east of the stadium and is envisioned as seating 6,000 to 8,000 for events such as intercollegiate basketball, commencement and concerts. It is currently expected to be at least 160,000 square feet. The project timeline is still being developed. The Stadium will be renovated, with current seating removed and replaced with a more permanent structure. Concessions and other amenities will be added. Seating capacity and other details are still being developed, as is a project timeline.

Women’s Season Preview YOUTH MOVEMENT TO LEAD TEAM IN SEARCH OF BIG SKY TITLE IN 2008 After watching the Sacramento State men’s team win the 2007 Big Sky Conference indoor title, the 2008 Hornet women’s team is poised to follow that same path and challenge for a title during the upcoming season. Sacramento State has brought in one of its most talented recruiting classes in school history — and combined with the returners — hopes to be atop the awards stand when the team hosts the Big Sky Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium in May. “This is a very talented freshmen class,” Sacramento State director of track & field/cross country Kathleen Raske said. “They will make an immediate impact.” Those freshmen will indeed have to make an impact as the Hornets need to replace NCAA Championships qualifier Nancy Searcy and two-time Big Sky champion Melissa Tracey.
SPRINTS
Nowhere will Sacramento State’s youth be more evident than in the sprints. Seven freshmen will compete in the 100, 200 and 400 and will accompany returners Tyriena Henley-Henderson, Carly Whitney and Morinsola Keshinro. The veteran of the group, Henley-Henderson returns for her fifth year with the team. Last season, she earned all-Big Sky honors after placing third in the 400 at the outdoor league championships. She also added a fourth-place finish in the 200 at that same meet. Indoors, the team captain was also third in the 400 and seventh in the 200. Primarily a hurdler, Keshinro will run the 400 during the indoor season and could also participate in the relays. Whitney will add experience in the 100. “I think Morinsola could score for us during the indoor season,” Raske said. “Carly has also improved and is working just on sprints and jumps (after competing in the multi during her first two years).” Freshmen Natalia Wright and Alicia Truesdale are expected to run the 100 and 200. Both athletes qualified for the state meet last year while seniors in high school. The longer sprints will also be loaded with youth as five freshmen are expected to compete. Victoria Humphrey enters with a resumé that features four state meet appearances, including a berth in the 400 finals as a senior. Chelsea Davis has been pencilled in to run the 200 and 400. Briana Nelson is a 6-foot tall 400 runner who qualified for the California state meet as a sophomore and senior.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
The middle distance and distance corps have both been bolstered for the upcoming season. Returners Madeira Macedo and Brittany Thomas will continue to run the 800 and will be joined by newcomers Lora Marchini, Renisha Robinson and Jasmine Jones.
4
Macedo ran the 200 and 400 last season but will make the transition to the longer event. Robinson and Marchini both debuted for Sacramento State during the cross country season. A native of San Jose, Calif., Robinson led the Hornets in three of the six meets. Robinson, Marchini and Mary Wagner will also compete in the 1500 outdoors and the mile indoors. Robinson comes to Sacramento State after a stellar high school career which was capped by a fourthplace finish in the 800 at the state meet during her senior season. She was twice named All-America while in high school and was the San Jose Mercury News Runner of the Year in 2007. The longer races will feature juniors Kristina Holtz, Erin Wachter and Jodie Leal and senior Tiffany Hall. Holtz and Leal will likely run the steeplechase while Wachter handles the 5K and 10K. Holtz earned allBig Sky honors in cross country in 2006 and Wachter led the team in three cross country meets in 2007. As a sophomore at Modesto JC in 2007, Leal won the NorCal title in the steeplechase. Hall is a transfer from San Jose State who will focus on the 5K.
HURDLES
The biggest question mark for Sacramento State — and for the Big Sky — will be in the hurdles. Last season, Searcy won the 55-hurdles indoors and the 100-hurdles outdoors. Tracey was also victorious in the 400-hurdles in 2006 and 2007. Despite those two losses, the Hornets have stockpiled enough talent in the hurdles to challenge for titles during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Whitney and sophomore Ericka Violett both return to the short hurdles. Last season, Violett qualified for the Big Sky Championships and placed fifth at the indoor meet. Keshinro looks to be the heir apparent to Tracey in the 400-hurdles. Last season, she finished second at the Big Sky outdoor meet after running a personal best 1:01.30 in the finals. Truesdale finished eighth in the 300-hurdles at the 2007 state high school meet and holds the Hayward Area Athletic League record in both the 100- and 300-hurdles. Stucks also ran the 300-hurdles in high school and will tack on the additional 100 meters at the collegiate level. According to coaches, she also could race in the 100-hurdles. Freshman Nicole Jackson rounds out the hurdlers. Jackson ran both events at nearby Bear River High School but will likely focus her attention on the 400hurdles in college.
JUMPS
Senior Lori Vaught showed her athletic ability last season winning the triple jump at the Big Sky indoor championship and the long jump at the conference outdoor meet. Her triple jump of 40-02.75 set the indoor school record and her outdoor best of 40-11.50 is the third longest at Sacramento State. Last season, Vaught finished first in the triple jump six times and added four victories in the long jump during the outdoor season. She has also qualified
for the NCAA regional the last two years and will be looking to make the jump to the next level. “Lori has proven that she can win both jumps at the Big Sky,” Raske said. “She is a strong competitor and hopefully that will push her to the NCAA Championships.” Whitney also returns to the long jump. In 2007, she finished fifth at the Big Sky indoor meet and recorded a career best of 18-09.25 during the outdoor season. Violett is coming off of an eighth-place finish at the conference outdoor meet where she jumped 37-08.50 in the triple jump. Newcomers Wright, Naima Goodwin and Moira Robinson are all expected to compete in both events. Both Wright and Robinson jumped 40 feet in high school and competed at the state meet. Moira Robinson and Rachel Welz will take over the duties in the high jump. Coaches describe the pair as “some of the best we’ve ever had” and both enter with a personal best of 5-foot-8. The pole vault will also be competitive with returners Melissa Adams, Violett and Lizzy Norvell. Violett destroyed the school indoor record with a vault of 12-09.00 at the Big Sky Championships to place third. Adams has a career best of 12-01.50 and Norvell cleared 11-05.75 during her first season. Freshmen Kaitlynne Moore and Jessica Pimentel will also compete in the pole vault. Moore finished seventh at the Junior Olympics and cleared 12-01.00 during the summer following her senior season. Pimentel topped 11 feet while in high school.
THROWS
Two-time NCAA regional qualifier Ashley Ast highlights the list of returning throwers. Ast was third in the javelin at the Big Sky meet last season and broke the school record with a throw of 153-00. Fifth-year senior Katie Lodato was fourth in the hammer at the Big Sky meet. Lodato is also expected to compete in the discus and weight throw. Other returners are comprised of Andrea Behring, Tatiana Clark and Laura Arnold. All three competed last season as true freshmen. New to the corps this season are Monica Gomez and Nicole McClure. Both student-athletes transferred to the Hornets after spending last season at New Mexico State. Gomez earned second team all-Western Athletic Conference in the shot put and McClure scored in the weight throw at the WAC indoor meet. Freshman Ify Agwuenu could also add depth in the discus and shot put.
MULTIS
Three freshmen could all compete in the multi events during the year. Moira Robinson, Welz and Goodwin have all caught the eye of Raske entering the year. “I think we can do really well in the multi despite a lack of experience,” Raske said. Welz is the most experienced of the group, having competed in the heptathlon at the Junior Olympics. Raske believes the key for Robinson and Goodwin will be in fine-tuning their throws.
2008 Hornet Track & Field
Men’s Season Preview HORNETS LOOK TO CONTINUE MOMEUNTUM FROM RECORDBREAKING SEASON In last year’s season preview, Sacramento State director of track and field/cross country Kathleen Raske preached about building a team that could challenge for the Big Sky Conference title. Raske did not have to wait long to see her dream come to fruition as the Hornets stunned the rest of the conference by winning the 2007 Big Sky indoor title. That team concept is exactly what helped the Hornets get to the top as Sacramento State scored points in nearly every event while also picking up five individual titles. “First and foremost, (the victory) proved to everybody that we’re a championship team,” Raske said. “We’ve been on the verge for the last few years but it took everyone coming together on the same weekend to get it done.” The only downside of winning last season’s crown is that the Hornets will no longer be able to sneak up on the competition. And with all but one all-conference performer returning, the team was picked as a co-favorite to repeat as Big Sky champs. “We’ve finally achieved our goal but now we have to stay on top of the Big Sky,” Raske explained. “We opened a lot of eyes last year and established ourselves as one of the top programs in the state.” The indoor arena was not the only place where Sacramento State tasted success. The team finished second at the Big Sky outdoor championships and will have the luxury of hosting the meet in 2008. “It’s huge to be at home and compete at sea-level,” Raske said. “The men now know what it takes to get it done.”
SPRINTS
One of the biggest surprises last season came in the sprints where Jody Johnson and Raphael McFarlane dominated the conference competition. Johnson joined the team in the fall after playing three years of football for Sacramento State. He responded by winning the Big Sky title in the 55 and the 200 at the indoor championships and later added the 200 title at the outdoor meet. During the course of the season, he set the school record in both the indoor and outdoor 200 and also qualified for the U.S. National Championships and the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships in the 200. “I anticipate Jody being able to sweep indoors again,” Raske said. “He learned a lot about his abilities as an athlete last season. He has a ton of natural talent and is a great competitor. I expect him to take it up a notch.” McFarlane will close out his stellar career with the Hornets during the indoor season. The senior is one of the most decorated athletes in school history having won five Big Sky individual titles and earning all-conference accolades nine times in his two years. Last year, McFarlane was third in the 55 during the indoor season and won the 100 during the outdoor
campaign. He continued his success at the NCAA West Regional and earned his first appearance at the NCAA Championships in the 100. “Raphael is one of the most talented guys I’ve ever coached,” Raske said. “He is capable of dominating the Big Sky in the sprints and long jump.” Freshmen Nick Johnson and Ronald Brookins are also expected to run the 100. The 200 feature both Jody and Nick Johnson as well as Jason Nelson. Senior Alex Jackson and Nelson will both be counted on to run the 400 and will also be key contributors to the 4x400 relay teams. Indoors, Stephone Paige and Jermaine Wilson will also compete.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Senior Jeffrey Paneda provided a much needed boost to the middle distance team last season. Paneda earned all-Big Sky honors after placing third in the 800 at the indoor championships. His time of 1:52.22 also set the school record in the event. “Jeff had a great cross country season and comes in very fit,” Raske said. “He should be able to improve on his performance from last season.” Returners Terrell Kirtz and David Rabinowitz and freshmen Jeremiah Irving and Myko Lucas will also contribute in the 800. The 1,500 will likely be manned by Rabinowitz and sophomore Colin Szehner. The longer distances feature numerous returners from last season that also ran for the Hornet cross country team during the fall. Junior Dominic Vogl is the most experienced member of the group. The Milbrae, Calif., native will either run the 5K or the steeplechase during the year. Redshirt freshman Jason Sey will specialize in the 5K and the 10K and will be accompanied by sophomore Daniel Carlson in the longer race. Sophomore Scott Grose is expected to run the steeplechase in his first season with the team.
HURDLES
The one missing element from last season will be felt in the hurdles where the team will have to overcome the graduation of Chauncey Corbin. Indoors, Brookins, Paige and junior A.J. Reed will lead the team. As a sophomore, Reed was third at the Big Sky indoor meet to earn all-conference honors. Outdoors, the 110-hurdles will be handled by Reed, Brookins and senior Stephone Paige. Reed was fourth in the Big Sky last season while Brookins finished eighth at the California state high school meet. Paige qualified for the Big Sky meet last season in the 110-hurdles but is also a key contributor in the 400-hurdles. Sophomore Jermaine Wilson is the team’s leading returner in the 400-hurdles. Last season he ran 53.30 as a true freshman and finished fifth at the Big Sky outdoor meet. Wilson also earned all-conference honors as a member of the school’s 4x400 relay team. Versatile freshman Derek Hammond could also run the 400-hurdles.
JUMPS
Two conference champions return to the Sacramento State lineup during the indoor season. McFarlane will look to defend his Big Sky indoor long jump title in his final season. The senior jumped 24-09.25 last season and became the third Hornet to win the event in the last four years. Senior Daniel Imlach is also back after winning both the indoor and outdoor Big Sky pole vault crowns last season. Imlach set the school record in both venues in 2007 and enters the year looking for his first NCAA Championships bid. “Daniel is in phenomenal shape,” Raske said. “He comes into this year so much further ahead than he has been in the past. He is looking to repeat as conference champion and get to the NCAAs.” During the outdoor season, junior David Houghton will be the team’s most experienced competitor in the long and triple jumps. He will be joined by freshmen Brookins (LJ), Hammond (TJ) and Nick Johnson (LJ). Following a sixth-place finish at the Big Sky meet last season, sophomore Emilio Hernandez returns in the triple jump. Junior Bryan Parker also comes back to the team in the triple after a two-year absence. The pole vault will also be very crowded as Imlach will train with veterans Matt Gilbert and Jimmy Williamson. Hernandez will also be the team’s top threat in the high jump after clearing 6-05.50 as a freshman.
THROWS
Senior David Nichols will close out his career following the indoor season. Nichols, who has won four Big Sky shot put titles, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships last season and will be looking for a return trip in March. “Dave is so talented,” Raske said. “Going to indoor nationals last season was huge because now he knows what he has to do.” Due to a wrist injury, Nichols made his season debut at the Big Sky Championships and proceeded to win the event. He later advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the third straight year. Sophomore Tanner Harrah also returns to the team after a breakout freshman season. Harrah competed at the Big Sky outdoor meet in the shot put and will also throw the hammer in 2008. Redshirt freshman Taylor Weldon and newcomers Jon Jordan and Matthew Price could also compete in the hammer and shot put, respectively. In the javelin, Tom Takemoto will return after throwing last season.
MULTIS
Senior Robert Brazier continues his quest to win a Big Sky mutli-event title and leave with his name atop the Sacramento State record book. Last season, Brazier set the school record in the heptathlon with 5,046 points and finished fourth at the conference meet. During the outdoor season, he scored 6,723 points to move into second in school history and added another fourth-place showing at conference.

2007 Cross Country Hornet Cross Country Granite Regional Park
Home of Sacramento State Cross Country
The Sacramento State cross country program continued its development during the 2007 season. The transformation continued in early September with the hiring of Scott Abbott as the team’s coach. Despite the late start to the job, Abbott’s knowledge paid early dividends as both the men’s and women’s team’s recorded four top-five finishes. Both teams began the year with fourth-place finishes at the Wolf Pack Invitational. The talented field featured the likes of perennial power UCLA and saw the Hornets led by Daniel Carlson on the men’s side and Jodie Leal for the women. The team returned home for the Hornet Jamboree and responded by winning the men’s race and placing third in the women’s contest. Colin Szehner and Carlson finished fourth and fifth overall, respectively, and Jeffrey Paneda, Scott Grose, Jason Sey and David Rabinowitz occupied seventh through 10th. Freshman Renisha Robinson led the women. The team next travelled to the Stanford Invitational. Paneda recorded the fastest time for the men and Robinson repeated as the leader for the women. The women’s team recorded its first victory of the season at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara. Erin Wachter (third), Mary Wagner (fifth), Leal (sixth), Lora Marchini (seventh) and Robinson (10th) all finished in the top 10 for Sacramento State and crossed the line in a 14-second span. The men finished fourth at the meet and were guided by Szehner. Sacramento State then ventured to Missoula, Mont., for the Big Sky Conference Championships. For the second season in a row, the men finished fifth overall and the women took seventh. The men recorded their best team split of the season as the top five runners were all within 25 seconds of one another. Newcomer Scott Grose also ran the 10th-fastest time by a Hornet at the meet in school history. Robinson ran 18:57 for the sixth-best mark by a women for Sacramento State. Her finish is also tied for fifth-best in program history. The final meet of the year was the NCAA West Regional in Portland, Ore. Grose continued his late-season surge by running the second-fastest time in school history at the regional. Wachter led the women.

Part of Sacramento State’s cross country training is to take advantage of the resources available on campus. This past fall, the team worked closely with Prof. Roberto Quintana. Dr. Quintana is the director of human performance research in the department of exercise physiology. Quintana’s specializes in altitude physiology and exercise performance. With his assistance, the team has been able to utilize some of the most advanced training techniques available at this time. Sacramento State also has the services of a registered dietician available. This allows the student-athletes to be able to create menus which best assists their training and recovery processes.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is the seventh largest university in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of 28,529. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes housing for as many as 5,000 students and an arena and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 200 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez is the 11th president of California State University, Sacramento – the capital city’s only comprehensive university and one of the largest campuses in the California State University system. Dr. Gonzalez was appointed President of Sacramento State in 2003, bringing new energy and a focused vision to the University. He is overseeing an initiative known as Destination 2010, which is designed to make Sacramento State a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus for the West. Among the priorities are enhancing academic programs and student services; new academic buildings; new on- and near-campus student housing; a faculty and staff village near campus; and a new Recreation and Wellness Center. Before coming to Sacramento, Dr. Gonzalez served from 1997 to 2003 as President of Cal State San Marcos. At San Marcos, he oversaw a period of rapid growth as well as many successful fundraising campaigns. He also spent 18 years at Fresno State, starting as a faculty member in the Psychology Department, which he later chaired. From 1991 to 1997, he served as the university’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Gonzalez is a member of the Board of Trustees at Pomona College. He also serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for Valley Vision. Dr. Gonzalez previously served on President Bush’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. His service on a number of
other boards and commissions includes six years as a Commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the agency that accredits higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as Chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His service to the CSU system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Pomona College, where he graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He spent a year at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow of the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council conducting research on the psychology of time. He also attended Harvard Law School. Dr. Gonzalez and his wife Gloria have been married for more than 35 years. They are the parents of two adult sons.
Dr. Terry Wanless’ five-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 16-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department came to fruition in the 2006-07 academic year where the Hornets claimed an unprecedented eight conference championships. That total included an amazing four titles which came in a four-hour span on May 29. Wanless has also overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change will come in early 2008 with the opening of the Broad Athletic Facility. The building will serve as the home to the Hornet football and track and field programs as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Broad Athletic Facility is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body. Wanless, who is entering his sixth year with the Hornets, has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Additionally, Wanless instituted a number of new programs, including the Athletics Director’s Academic Achievement Award – presented to each student-athlete that achieves a term GPA of 3.0 or higher. Those academic efforts have paid early dividends. Over the last five years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,300 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. Additionally, over 300 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily
visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his five years at Sacramento State, 21 teams and 43 individuals have advanced to conference and NCAA postseason competition. In addition, the 200607 season saw eight sports (volleyball, gymnastics, men’s indoor track and field, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s golf, men’s golf and rowing) win their conference title. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. The Hornets have been tabbed to serve as the host institution for 2007 Div. I Volleyball Championships as well as the 2008 Div. I Women’s Golf West Regional. Additionally, Sacramento State has served as host to six NCAA championships (four track, two rowing) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field during Wanless’ first five years of leadership. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis.
The Student-Athlete Resource Center offers academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules education and compliance, athletic financial services support, and life skills programming for all student-athletes of Sacramento State’s Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program. The S.A.R.C.’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways including individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education sessions, freshmen seminar classes, and a variety of student development and academic workshops. S.A.R.C. Director Paul Edwards and Academic Athletic Services Coordinator Laurie Dahlberg serve as the primary advisors to the student-athletes. Under the direction of Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Mark McGushin, the Student-Athlete Academic & Life Skills Lab is available to student-athletes as a study area and to meet with tutors. Additionally, McGushin coordinates the mentoring program which addresses student-athletes experiencing academic difficulties. The S.A.R.C. also provides additional services, guest speak-

The goal of the athletic training staff is to provide all Sacramento State student-athletes with high quality health care. Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides stateof-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to the appropriate medical provider or facility. Sacramento State boasts three training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Hornet Stadium fieldhouse). All training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every student-athlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes is a Kaiser physician, two dentists, a physical therapist and a chiropractor.
