HORNET TRACK & FIELD
Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex
The Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex is an ambitious project that will change the face and character of Sacramento State. It is a centerpiece of Destination 2010, University President Alexander Gonzalez’ initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus. Thanks to generous gifts by philanthropist and San Diego Chargers owner Alex G. Spanos and his wife, Faye, the facility has had more than $13 million in upgrades since 1998. Hornet Stadium also is at the center of a project that will include the newly completed Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse, a recreation center, arena and stadium renovation — all part of the Spanos Sports Complex. Alex G. and Faye Spanos provided the leadership gift of $10 million to support expansion of the Spanos Sports Complex. There will be additional funding from other private sources and a new fee that students supported in a 2004 referendum. The first expansion phase of the complex is the recently completed Broad Fieldhouse in recognition of a $2 million gift from Eli and Edythe Broad. The facility is on the south side of the stadium and includes a nearly 6,000 square-foot weight room, as well as locker rooms, offices and athletic training room. Also in 2008, Sacramento State broke ground on the Recreation and Wellness Center north of the stadium. At approximately 150,000 square feet, the state-of-the-art facility will have an indoor track, fitness center, recreational courts, a rock-climbing wall and a health center. Its completion in 2010 will complement the unprecedented number of students living on campus with the 2009 opening of the University’s new residence hall. Sacramento State is currently pursuing public-private partnership options for the arena portion of the complex. It will be built on the east of the stadium and seat 6,000 to 8,000 for events such as intercollegiate basketball, commencement and concerts. The stadium renovation will include a more permanent structure and additional amenities. The development of the Spanos Sports Complex is part of the Destination 2010 initiative to improve Sacramento State through enhanced academic and student programs, the building of a welcoming campus, the creation of a dynamic physical environment and the development outstanding community support. HORNET TRACK & FIELD
Building a Championship Tradition Sacramento State has become the most successful track and field program in the Big Sky Conference over the last two years. The Hornets have won four conference titles during that span including three out of four last season. The streak began when the men’s team stunned the rest of the Big Sky at the 2007 indoor championships. The team proved its title was not a fluke by repeating last season and was joined atop the awards stand by the women’s team which claimed its first crown. In the spring of 2008, the Hornet women grabbed the first Big Sky outdoor title in school history while the men finished second. Individually, Sacramento State has also produced 38 Big Sky Conference champions in the last two years.

HORNET TRACK & FIELD Women’s Season Preview DEFENDING BIG SKY CHAMPS LOOK TO KEEP THEIR FOCUS IN REPEAT BID The progression of the Sacramento State track & field program over the past five years has been unparalleled in school history. After inheriting a program that perennially finished in the bottom half of the league, director of track & field/cross country Kathleen Raske transformed the team into contenders and eventually indoor and outdoor champions in 2008. With a pair of Big Sky Conference titles under the team’s belt, Raske’s new challenge will be keeping the team focused for a repeat attack. “I’ve told our team that the top goal is to combat complacency,” Raske said. “It is hard to stay on top and we can’t afford to take things for granted. I created a theme of FIRE for the year which stands for focus, intensity, responsibility and enthusiasm.” The Hornets return the majority of last season’s team, which edged Weber State by one point to claim its first Big Sky indoor championship before winning the outdoor title by 45.5 points. The team will try to offset the loss of Big Sky champions Tyriena Henley-Henderson and Lori Vaught with the addition of seven freshmen.
SPRINTS
With three all-Big Sky selections returning, Sacramento State will once again count on the sprints to help score points at the conference championships. This season, the Hornets will count on sophomores Victoria Humphrey, Chelsea Davis, Briana Nelson and Alicia Truesdale to lead the way. As a freshman, Humphrey earned all-Big Sky honors after placing second in the 100. She also showed her versatility by finishing fourth in the outdoor 200 and eighth in the indoor 400. Humphrey also ran the leadoff leg of the Hornets’ 4x100 relay team which finished first at the outdoor championships with a time of 46.37 seconds. Davis ran the 100, 200 and 400 during her first collegiate season. The Newbury Park, Calif., native qualified for both Big Sky Championships in the 400 and finished fourth during the outdoor meet. Nelson focused her attention on the 200 and 400 and qualified for the Big Sky Championships in the longer of the two races. Truesdale won the 60-meter dash during the indoor season, anchored the 4x100-winning relay team outdoors, and finished sixth in the 100. During the indoor season, the team could also call upon hurdlers Morinsola Keshinro and Nicole Jackson to assist in the 400.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
After finishing second at the 2008 Big Sky Cross Country Championships, the Hornet distance corps has established itself as one of the top teams in conference. A strong group of returners and a handful of talented newcomers vaulted the team to its highest
4
finish in school history during the fall and will hope to repeat its success during the spring. Sophomore Renisha Robinson will pace the Hornets in the 800 and 1500. As a freshman, Robinson was the Big Sky indoor champion in the 800 and set the school record in the process with a time of 2:10.26. Outdoors, she earned all-Big Sky honors with a third place finish in the 1500 and had the fastest 800 time in the conference during the year. Robinson went on to compete at the NCAA West Regional and the USATF Junior Nationals. The 800 and 1500 will also feature sophomore Lora Marchini and redshirt freshman Jasmine Jones. Transfers Jenni Eiremo (Iona) and Lea Wallace (Cal Poly) are also expected to compete. The trio of Kristina Holtz, Caprice Bradshaw and Jodie Leal will split their time between the 3K, 5K and steeplechase during the year. Holtz earned all-Big Sky honors during the cross country season and also in the steeplechase last spring. During the year, she broke her own school record in the steeplechase with a time of 10:27.53 at the NCAA West Regional. She also scored during the indoor season with a sixth-place finish in the mile. Junior Mary Wagner (800/1500) and Oregon transfer Erin Lewis (1500/5K) will also race the longer distances, according to Raske. The 5K and 10K will primarily be handled by senior Erin Wachter.
onships in the event. The Stockton, Calif., native also qualified for the long jump at the meet and scored in both events at the indoor championships. Goodwin and Violett will also show their versatility in the jumps. Goodwin was a conference qualifier in the triple jump and is also likely compete in the high jump, according to Raske. Violett scored in the outdoor triple jump after placing seventh. Moira Robinson also had success in multiple events last season, placing third in the high jump and triple jump and fifth in the long jump at the Big Sky outdoor championships. Midyear recruit Baiba Celma will also contribute to one of the most talented units in the Big Sky. One of the deepest events on the team is pole vault where the roster features four student-athletes that have the ability to score at the conference meet. The group is highlighted by Lizzy Norvell, Violett and Kaitlynne Moore who each finished in the top eight last season. Norvell finished second in the event at the outdoor meet after clearing 12-07.50 which ranks third in school history. Violett was one spot back of Norvell at the outdoor championships and also earned all-Big Sky honors indoors as a freshman in 2007. Moore was eighth at the indoor championships with a career-best vault of 11-11.75 as a true freshman. The newcomer to the group is redshirt freshman Jessica Pimentel.
HURDLES
THROWS
JUMPS
MULTIS
Sacramento State has built a dynasty in the hurdles over the past three years. Last season, Keshinro continued the tradition by capturing the 400-hurdles title at the Big Sky Championships. The senior ranks fourth in school history with a time of 1:00.23 in the event. Jackson also scored for Sacramento State at the Big Sky Championships in the 400-hurdles after placing sixth with a career-best time of 1:02.44. The 100-hurdles will be run by Ericka Violett, Jackson and Naima Goodwin. Violett finished fourth in the event final at the Big Sky outdoor championships last season. Jackson will look to complete the double while Goodwin will aid the pair. “Morinsola and Ericka are both team captains this year,” Raske explained. “Morinsola now knows what it takes to win and Ericka is very strong, motivated, and set for a big year.” Truesdale also returns after winning the 100hurdles at the outdoor championships and placing second in the 60-hurdles indoors. Sophomore Moira Robinson was also an all-Big Sky selection in the 60-hurdles.
One of the biggest challenges for the team will be filling the void left by Vaught in the long and triple jumps. In her time with the team, Vaught won five Big Sky titles (combined indoor and outdoor). Sophomore Natalia Wright will be the favorite to take over the reigns. Wright qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals this past summer in the triple jump and also finished fifth at the Big Sky outdoor champi-
A pair of all-Big Sky honorees will lead the throwers into the year. Senior Monica Gomez placed third in the shot put at the indoor championships and was sixth outdoors. Her put of 47-05.75 set the school indoor record and she ranks fourth in school outdoor history with a mark of 45-10.75. Last year, Ify Agwuenu qualified for the USATF Junior Nationals and the NCAA West Regional in the shot put. She finished second at the Big Sky outdoor championships with a school-record of 47-07.75 and also qualified for the Big Sky meet in the discus. Senior Nicole McClure, juniors Tatiana Clark, Andi Behring and Laura Arnold also return to the team. McClure was a Big Sky qualifier in the weight throw and also competed in the shot put and hammer during the outdoor season. Clark set PRs in the shot put and hammer and also competed in the discus. Behring and Arnold also recorded personal bests in the shot put last season. Redshirt freshman Jessica Bonner will be one of the team’s discus throwers. Bonner was the CIF Southern Section champion as a junior.
Goodwin, Moira Robinson and Celma will compete in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Goodwin qualified for the Big Sky indoor championship in the pentathlon and in the heptathlon at the outdoor meet. Robinson set the school record in the pentathlon and led the team in the heptathlon during the year. Celma, a native of Latvia, brings international expereince to the team.
HORNET TRACK & FIELD Men’s Season Preview HORNET MEN IN SEARCH OF THIRD BIG SKY TITLE IN THREE SEASONS Two years ago the Sacramento State men stunned the rest of the Big Sky Conference by winning the indoor championship at Montana State. A second-place finish in the ensuing outdoor championship proved that the Hornets were a team to contend with. Despite that success, there were still some doubters heading into last season but the team answered with a second indoor title and just missed an outdoor title. That said, Sacramento State will now face the challenge of becoming a powerhouse in the Big Sky. In order to join the ranks of perennial title contenders Weber State and Northern Arizona, the Hornets will need to have continued success from their returners, an early impact from their newcomers and be able to overcome the loss of three seniors who each qualified for the NCAA Div. I Championships in 2008. Entering the 2009 campaign, director of track & field/cross country Kathleen Raske believes you can’t count the Hornets out of a title run. “It’s still too early to tell how good we are going to be, but I’m really excited about the possibilities,” Raske said.
SPRINTS
Sacramento State might be the only team in the conference that has the luxury of losing a pair of athletes that combined to win the 60 and 200 indoor and the 100 and 200 outdoor and still feel confident about their ability to defend the title in the sprints. Seniors Raphael McFarlane (60) and Jody Johnson (100 and 200) dominated the league a year ago but were pressured throughout the season by teammates A.J. Reed and Ronald Brookins. Reed was fourth in the 100 and also qualified for the 200 at the outdoor championships. Indoors, the team co-captain was sixth in the 60. Brookins had one of the best freshman seasons in school history. The San Diego, Calif., native was third in the 100 and fifth in the 60. Newcomers Marcus McMillan, Nathan Caris and Andy White are also expected to run the short sprints according to Raske. In the 400, Jason Nelson and Jermaine Wilson will each bring experience to the event. Nelson qualified for the Big Sky outdoor meet in the event. Both studentathletes were also members of the 4x400 relay team which won the conference crown and set a school record in the process. Freshman Philip Burks, JC transfer Alex Harvin and sophomore Derek Hammond will also add depth.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
The Hornets boast one of their more balanced distance teams in recent memory. Senior Dominic Vogl is the veteran of the squad and returns after placing fifth in the steeplechase last season. Vogl also qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the steeplechase and
ranks third in school history in the event. The Milbrae, Calif., native will also run the 5K and 10K. Other returners include juniors Colin Szehner, Scott Grose, and Danny Carlson and sophomore Jason Sey. Szehner scored in both the steeplechase and the 5K at the Big Sky outdoor championships and led the Hornets in the final four cross country meets of the regular season. Grose joined Vogl and Szehner in the steeplechase at the conference meet and is also expected to run the 1,500, according to Raske. Carlson and Sey are each slated to take on the longer races, focusing their attentions on the 5K and 10K. Freshman Chris Romo and sophomore Garrett Infausto will likely run the 5K and 1,500, respectively. The 800 will be manned by Myko Lucas, Terrell Kirtz, Jeremiah Irving and Cameron Mitchell. The quartet of runners will be looking to replace Jeffrey Paneda who won the event title at the indoor and outdoor Big Sky championships. Kirtz and Lucas were both Big Sky qualifiers in the 800 last year.
HURDLES
Brookins, Reed and Wilson headline, arguably, one of the top group of hurdlers in the West Region. Reed was the Big Sky indoor champion in the 60-hurdles and tied the school record with a time of 8.02. He went on to finish second in the 110-hurdles during the outdoor season and advanced to the NCAA West Regional. Brookins burst onto the scene by placing third and earning all-Big Sky honors in the 60-hurdles. He continued to shine at the outdoor meet by winning the 110-hurdles title and qualifying for the NCAA West Regional. Brookins success carried over to the summer where he represented the United States at the IAAF Junior World Championships in Poland. “A.J. and Ronald are both in great shape and continue to improve,” Raske said. “They both have their sights set on winning another conference title and advancing to nationals.” One of the biggest threats to the pair could be McMillan. The freshman was named the track athlete of the year by the Sacramento Bee last spring after a stellar career at Vacaville High School. As a senior, McMillan finished third at the state meet and won the Sac-Joaquin Section title. Wilson has twice scored in the 400-hurdles after finishing fifth as a freshman and fourth last year. The Vallejo, Calif., native will look to continue his progression by moving into the top three as a junior. Freshmen Matthew Brown and Matt Williamson will also compete in the 110-hurdles.
JUMPS
Sacramento State returns two Big Sky champions and four all-Big Sky selection from a year ago. Junior Emilio Hernandez was named the Male Field Athlete of the Meet at the outdoor championships after winning the high jump and placing third in the triple jump. Hernandez cleared a personal-best 6-10.75
to become the first Hornet to win the high jump since joining the Big Sky in 1997. The Redwood City, Calif., native also qualified for the conference meet in the long jump. During the indoor season, Hernandez was third in the high jump to earn all-conference honors and placed fifth in the triple jump. “Emilio has the ability to win all three jumps (high, long and triple),” Raske said. If Hernandez is to win the long jump, he will have to dethrone defending champion Brookins who jumped 23-09.50 during his freshman season. Brookins also finished fourth in the indoor long jump and advanced to the NCAA West Regional outdoors. Senior David Houghton finished second to Brookins in the outdoor long jump to earn the second all-Big Sky honor during his career. Hammond had the best finish on the team in triple jump. The sophomore was second and also scored in the long and the triple indoors. Freshman Philip Burks bolsters the group after an outstanding high school career. Burks was sixth in the state in the triple jump as a senior and also won the Marmonte League title in both the long and the triple. He also finished second in the long jump at the Golden West Invitational. Freshman Sam Schur will join Hernandez in the high jump while Matt Brown will compete in the long jump, according to coaches. The pole vault will have a new look following the graduation of four-time Big Sky champion Daniel Imlach. Senior Jimmy Williamson will compete during the indoor season. Williamson scored at both conference meets last season, placing eighth indoors and fourth outdoors. Freshmen Blair Wallingford and Andrew Lohse should be able to step right in and compete. Wallingford was second in the state meet as a junior and was third as a senior. Lohse finished fourth at the USATF Youth Championships this past summer and was the Valley Section champion.
THROWS
Returners Jon Jordan and Taylor Weldon will be accompanied by freshman Jason Wacker in the shot put, weight throw and hammer. Harrah qualified for the Big Sky Championships two years ago before redshirting last season. Freshman Blake Brown, and Weldon will likely throw the discus. The javelin will be manned by Tom Takemoto and Nick Mills. Takemoto ranks fourth in school history and qualified for the Big Sky Championships a season ago. Freshmen Michael Goytia and Andy Miller will also compete in the throws.
MULTIS
Four freshmen could compete in the multi events in 2009. The group of Wallingford, Matt Williamson, Matthew Brown and Schur are all currently training for the heptathlon and decathlon during the fall. “We have a great group of multi-eventers that are learning quickly,” Raske said.

HORNET TRACK & FIELD Hornet Stadium & Eli & Edythe Broad Fieldhouse
The Sacramento State track and field program begins its 11th season in the renovated Hornet Stadium and its second in the Eli & Edythe Broad Fieldhouse. Seating just over 21,000, the stadium remains the University’s most impressive athletic facility and the largest track facility in the Big Sky Conference. Thanks to a generous donation by philanthropist Alex G. Spanos, Hornet Stadium underwent a major renovation in May of 1998 to accommodate the upgrades for the 2000 Olympic Trials. Reconstruction of the existing track was completed by August, just three months later. A separate warm-up track followed in 1999. In 2003, upgrades were made to the stadium lighting and a new scoreboard was installed for both track and football. Regarded as one of the fastest surfaces in the country, Hornet Stadium has also hosted the 2001 Junior Olympics, the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. The track has been used by some of the best athletes in the world. Since it was installed in 1999, one world, six American, 22 Olympic Trials, eight U.S. Championship, 13 NCAA, three American junior and two national high school records have been set at the facility. The stadium track is surfaced with Mondo Sportflex Super X and features eight 1.22 meter-wide lanes on the oval and nine lanes for the 200 and 100 meter races. The track has a 37-meter radius with the steeplechase water jump on the inside of the track on the North curve. The field event areas include two dual directional long/triple jump runways positioned on the inside of the East side of the track. There are also two dual directional pole vault runways located inside the North end of the track. The high jump has two approach areas on each end. The field event approach surfaces are all Mondo Sportsflex Super X. All throwing events can be contested on the infield inside the track. Hornet Stadium Fast Facts Originally Built: 1969 Original Capacity: 6,000+ Current Capacity (1998): 21,195 Field Surface: Grass First Renovation: 1992 warm-ups at large meets and as an extra practice site. The second track is also surfaced with Mondo Sportsflex Super X and has a six-lane straightaway with a two-lane 400 meter oval built to the same specifications of the stadium track. All jumping and throwing events have runways, pits, and rings within the practice facility. This past fall, a new throws area (center picture) was added on the north end of the practice track. The area features a new 10-meter hammer/discus cage, two shot put rings with an 85-foot dedicated landing area and a javelin runway. The facility allows all Hornet throwers to train and compete in the same location for the first time in school history. This allows for greater instruction during practice and meets and is fan-friendly for competition viewing. The Broad Fieldhouse provides the Hornets with one of the top facilities in the Big Sky Conference. The building, which was completed in the spring of 2008, contains locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams, coaches offices, training room and weight room. The facility is located at the south end of the stadium and gives the program the ability to train and meet year-around. The addition of these projects only enhances Sacramento State’s ability to continue to host NCAA and USATF national championship meets.

CROSS COUNTRY 2008 Hornet Cross Country The 2008 cross country season was a monumental one for Sacramento State. Under the direction of second-year coach Scott Abbott, the Hornet men and women combined for eight top three finishes during the year and set numerous records in the proccess. The highlight of the season came at the Big Sky Championships where the women placed second and had three all-Big Sky Conference performers. Kristina Holtz, Renisha Robinson and Caprice Bradshaw placed sixth, seventh and ninth, respectively to give the team its highest number of all-Big Sky runners since joining the conference. Those performances helped Sacramento State to its highest team finish at the meet in school history. Following the meet, Abbott was named the Big Sky Women’s Coach of the Year and the women ended the season ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA West Region poll. The season began at the Aggie Open where the women finished second and the men placed third. Individually, Holtz and Lora Marchini placed in the top 10 for the women and Jason Sey finished fifth overall for the men. The next week, the team hosted its annual Hornet Jamboree at Granite Regional Park. The men recorded their second straight team title and also dominated the awards stand where Scott Grose, Dominic Vogl and Colin Szehner finished first through third, respectively. Led by Holtz’ third-place finish, the women placed third overall in the 5K race. Sacramento State got its first of two looks at the Stanford course on Sept. 27 in the highly-competitive Stanford Invitational. Both teams finished among the top 20 with Holtz and Vogl each pacing their squads. The men and women moved back into the top three at the Doc Adams Invitational the next week. The women were second with five top 10 finishers and the men were third with two in the top eight. The regular season closed with the San Francisco State Invitational and the Santa Clara Invitational. Holtz and Szehner were the first Hornets to cross the line in both meets. Szehner continued to run well in the postseason where he clocked the fastest times in school history at the Big Sky Championships and the NCAA West Regional. In all, the men recorded six of the 10 fastest times in school history at the Big Sky meet and had three of the top 10 times at the NCAA West Regional. The women also had success at the West Regional, finishing 15th overall. Holtz ran the fastest time in Sacramento State history at the meet and was one of five Hornets ranked in the top six.

Part of Sacramento State’s cross country training is to take advantage of the resources available on campus. This past fall, the team worked closely with Prof. Roberto Quintana. Dr. Quintana is the director of human performance research in the department of exercise physiology. Quintana’s specializes in altitude physiology and exercise performance. With his assistance, the team has been able to utilize some of the most advanced training techniques available at this time. Sacramento State also has the services of a registered dietician available. This allows the student-athletes to be able to create menus which best assist their training and recovery process.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is the seventh largest university in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of nearly 29,000. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working in internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes housing for as many as 5,000 students and a recreation and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 250 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

• Sacramento State offers 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees in eight Colleges. Teacher education is the largest academic program, followed by business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. The student-to-faculty ratio is 20 to 1; more than 70 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students. • Attracting students from all over the world, the criminal justice program is one of the largest in the United States. • One in 26 residents of the six-county Sacramento Region is a Sacramento State graduate. The University directly and indirectly contributes more than $900 million to the region’s economy annually. • Almost 700 new school teachers graduate from Sacramento State each year. • Seventy-eight percent of students say that Sacramento State was their first or only choice. • Sacramento State was the site of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships, and the Sacramento State Aquatic Center was the site of the 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. This year, Sacramento State will host the NCAA Div. I Women’s Volleyball Final Four on Dec. 13-15 at Arco Arena. • Sacramento State hosted the most successful U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials ever in 2000, and hosted the event again in 2004. • Famous Sacramento State alumni include actor Tom Hanks, Grammy award winner Bobby McFerrin, former cohost of Good Morning America Joan Lunden, former host of the Early Show, Rene Syler, stand-up comedian Brian Posehn, actor Carlos Alazraqui, film director Joe Carnahan, Stockton mayor Edward Chavez, famous economist and author Richard J. Partnering With Athletics For Excellence When the Sacramento State student body overwhelmingly passed a referendum in the spring of 1995, it began a partnership between the Hornet Athletics Department and Associated Students, Inc. That vote by the students helps fund the athletics department and has been a key factor in the recent success. ASI is a student-run, non-profit corporation that represents the student body in the governance of the University. One of ASI’s goals is to facilitate student participation in a full range of campus life and learning outside the classroom. Guided by this goal, ASI supports intercollegiate, recreational, and intramural sports, which is not only an important part of campus life, but an arena in which leadership skills are developed. ASI also operates the Green Sting student organization, the Sacramento State Aquatic Center (which is home to the Hornet rowing team), the Challenge Center, Peak Adventures and numerous other student organizations.
• Sacramento is part of a Capital Region with nearly 2 million people in the heart of Northern California, one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country and the Lake Tahoe region’s ski slopes. • Sacramento is notably diverse racially, ethnically, and by household income, and has a notable lack of inter-racial disharmony. In 2002, Time magazine and the Civil Rights Project of Harvard University identified Sacramento as the most racially/ethnically integrated major city in America. • Sacramento is one of the most affordable big cities in California. • Sacramento is home to the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, Sacramento River Cats (the Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate) and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. • Sacramento hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend. It has also become a tourist center with attractions including the State Capitol building, North America’s largest railroad museum, the Old Sacramento historic area, the California State History Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. • Founded in 1849, Sacramento is the cultural, education, business and governmental center of a fourcounty metropolitan region.
Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and elsewhere.
Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.
Dr. Terry Wanless’ six-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 17-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department came to fruition over the last two years where the Hornets have claimed an unprecedented eight conference championships during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. That included a landslide victory in the race for the Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophy in 2007-08. In fact, of the 330 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. Wanless has also overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse. The building will serve as the home to the Hornet football and track and field programs as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Over the last six years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,700 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. Additionally, over 400 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period.
His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his six years at Sacramento State, 20 teams and 48 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. Last year, the Hornets were tabbed to serve as the host institution for 2007 Div. I Volleyball Championships as well as the 2008 Div. I Women’s Golf West Regional. During Wanless’ six years of leadership, Sacramento State has now served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley and son Jack. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis with their daughter Elli.
The Student-Athlete Resource Center offers academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules education and compliance, athletic financial services support, and life skills programming for all student-athletes of Sacramento State’s Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program. The S.A.R.C.’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways including individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education sessions, freshmen seminar classes, and a variety of student development and academic workshops. S.A.R.C. Director Paul Edwards and Academic Athletic Services Coordinator Laurie Dahlberg serve as the primary advisors to the student-athletes. Under the direction of Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Mark McGushin, the Student-Athlete Academic & Life Skills Lab is available to student-athletes as a study area and to meet with tutors. Additionally, McGushin coordinates the mentoring program which addresses student-athletes experiencing academic difficulties. The S.A.R.C. also provides additional services, guest speak-

The goal of the athletic training staff is to provide all Sacramento State student-athletes with high quality health care. Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides stateof-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to the appropriate medical provider or facility. Sacramento State boasts three training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Hornet Stadium fieldhouse). All training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every student-athlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes is a Kaiser physician, two dentists, a physical therapist and a chiropractor. Sacramento State’s athletic training staff consists of three full-time certified athletic trainers, three graduate assistants and more than 15 athletic training students preparing for a career in sports medicine.
