BETWEEN THE LINES

Give the Gift of Farmhouse Style written by Laurie Berglie

This “Between the Lines” showcases the brand new release of City Farmhouse Style, written by Kim Leggett and published by Abrams. Purchase it for yourself or give it as a gift this holiday season. I’m sure you all have that “sisterin-law” who would adore these “designs for a modern country life.” photo © Alissa Saylor

Every year for Christmas my thoughtful sister-in-law gifts me a gorgeous coffee table book, and there’s probably nothing I look forward to more. Of course, these books are always equestrian-themed or inspired, be it art and home décor or architecture and design. Not only are these splendid books full of informative, useful content, but they become statement pieces themselves when placed on a desk, nightstand, or – where else? – the coffee table.

Holiday Guide to Equestrian Style

After years of saving, my husband and I purchased our small horse farm and made the move out of suburbia into the country. While the life I live with my animals, nature, and wide-open spaces influences my décor choices, I know that not everyone wants to leave the comforts of convenience and move to “the middle of nowhere,” as my husband occasionally laments! And thanks to City Farmhouse Style you can bring that country, farmhouse feel into your living space, even if your home is in a city high-rise.

As you’ll see in the pages of this beautiful book, anyone can achieve farmhouse style, as it recognizes no boundaries. This style is borne of simplicity and is loved for its ability to play well with other design elements and aesthetics, whether traditional, contemporary, or somewhere in the middle. “Hallmarks of farmhouse style – family, heirlooms, cleverly upcycled accents – are intended to connect us with the past. Creaky hardwood floors remind us of those who walked before us, as do the resourcefully repurposed items that decorate our planked walls and open shelves. The real beauty of farmhouse style – unlike other more fleeting design trends – is that it’s rooted in roll-up-your-sleeves practicality.” – Rachel Hardage Barrett, editor in chief, Country Living. And if there’s something equestrians can understand and appreciate, it’s practicality. Whether you live out in the country or not, equestrians are active people; our homes take a lot of wear and tear, so they need to be highly-functional. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful as well, and Leggett’s book has the tips and tools to help achieve the exact look you’re after. Happy reading and happy gifting!

Best Holida Memory “

My best memory is when Santa gave me two skates for my left foot, so Santa wrote me a note saying he must have mistaken the whiskey bottle for the milk jug, and told me the local store would gladly replace the skates for the correct ones if I showed them Santa’s note.

My favorite Christmas was when my kids were both still at the age where they looked forward to Santa’s visit with innocence and curiosity. That year, we broke a tradition of bringing home a lot-bought Spruce tree, and decided to cut down our own local Bay Laurel found as a family atop the Petaluma hills at the ranch. We sparsely and tastefully decorated the Bay – it was a beauty and very fragrant. Santa left a beautiful antique rocking horse for the children under the Bay Laurel, play bows and arrows, an Easy Bake Oven and cowboy hats and boots. Seeing their joy the next morning when they awoke to a tree filled with ‘a few of my favorite things’ warmed my heart more than ever. However, the Bay Laurel left ‘Santa’ with his first allergic migraine, and the tree had to be returned to the farm shortly after our very special Christmas morning.

My favorite holiday memory, I think, would be coming down the stairs every year with my brother and seeing the presents under the tree. My little brother, Harry, and I were not allowed downstairs till mom and dad were awake, so the anticipation of going downstairs would have us wired!

I feel like every holiday is a bit special, but I loved spending the holidays with my family in Whitefish, Montana. We would ski and hang out in the snow. There is just nothing like a white winter – we don’t really get that in California!

— G R A DY LY M A N

My favorite holiday memory is Christmas about 12 years ago, when my parents bought me a rocking horse. I remember how my eyes lit up when I saw it. I immediately wanted to get on and ride it, similar to when I see horses today!

SPRUCE MEADOWS’

story by Laurie Berglie

Sleigh bells ring Are you listening? In the lane Snow is glistening A beautiful sight We’re happy tonight Walking in a winter wonderland! his carol may be a holiday favorite, but it becomes a reality at Spruce Meadows’ International Christmas Market. All equestrians have heard of Spruce Meadows, a leading venue in the world of international horse sports located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Built by the Southern family in 1976, the show jumping complex is in the foothills of the Alberta Rocky Mountains and is comprised of 360 acres. Over the years, Spruce Meadows has also grown into a community meeting place that hosts numerous events throughout the year – corporate meetings, weddings, etc., but during the holidays it becomes a true winter wonderland! “Spruce Meadows has been running the International Christmas Market, presented by TELUS, for 16 years now,” notes Caroline Grant, Executive Assistant and Media

Coordinator, Administration at Spruce Meadows. “From its beginnings in 2001 as a three day event, the market has now grown into three consecutive weekends that welcomes more than 200,000 guests through our gates!” For nine days, the International Christmas Market transforms Spruce Meadows into a truly magical place full of holiday excitement and festive cheer. The grounds, including nine indoor and outdoor venues, play host to 400 unique artisans and merchants who sell everything from home décor, seasonal items with all the trimmings, and handcrafted jewelry, to clothing, children’s toys, and specialty gifts. A variety of delicious treats can also be found throughout the venue, and once you’ve had your fill of baked goods, cookies, and hot chocolate, visit Santa in his workshop and his famous team of reindeer.

27

“The moment visitors arrive to Spruce Meadows they’re instantly hit with the heartwarming spirit of the holidays,” says Grant. “The intoxicating aroma of chestnuts roasting, fresh cut greens, and steeping Glühwein fills the crisp winter air. The delicate sound of carolers singing familiar tunes can be heard in the distance while the busy shoppers check off their Christmas lists with their new treasures in hand.” Later on We’ll conspire As we dream by the fire To face unafraid The plans that we’ve made Walking in a winter wonderland! Speaking of dreaming by the fire, there are numerous fire pits set up throughout the grounds where you can pause for a moment, warm your fingers and toes, and enjoy the peaceful holiday ambience.

28

Holiday Guide to Equestrian Style

For those of us who are equestrians, the Market will not disappoint. “Beautiful tack and leathers, top brand name equestrian fashion, and equine-inspired décor, photography, and art can all be found. There are also plenty of winter equine photo ops at Paddock Park and in the Spruce Meadows Riding Hall Circle where Gypsy Vanner horses and Santa’s reindeer intermingle.” As the sun sets into the evening, the Spruce Meadows grounds light up with the epic glow of festive Christmas lights. But the magic doesn’t end just because the Market does. “At the conclusion of the International Christmas Market, Spruce Meadows continues its seasonal celebrations with a complimentary three-kilometer drive through the ‘Christmas Lights at Spruce Meadows.’ This is open each night leading into the New Year and features life-size snow globes, spectacular window settings, heroic Santas from around the world, and a quarter of a million twinkling lights. After you’ve driven or walked through the splendor of the lights, park the

car, strap on the blades, and enjoy skating on the Spruce Meadows Pond.” The International Christmas Market is held over three weekends: Nov. 17-19, Nov. 24-26, and Dec. 1-3, 2017. There is Preferred Parking in the Gallery on the Green parking lot. Close and convenient to all the shopping venues, this lot is accessible via Tournament Lane and costs $10 per carload. From world-imported items to hand-crafted gifts, the International Christmas Market provides stress-free shopping in a beautiful, jolly environment. It’s the perfect place to shop, dine, and unwind with family and friends while you soak up the merry atmosphere that seems extra radiant at Christmastime. When it snows Ain’t it thrilling? Though your nose gets a chilling We’ll frolic and play the Eskimo way Walking in a winter wonderland!

DIY by Danielle Demers

This chic white and gold apothecary jar snow globe will add wintry equestrianinspired holiday cheer to your Christmas table decorations, the mantle piece, side table or even your desk this season. SUPPLIES: • Clear glass apothecary jar • Stencils* • White Bristol board – approx. 3 sheets • Gold leaf – approx. 5 sheets • Fake snow – 1 packet • Pencil • Scissors • X-acto knife • Tacky glue • Paint brush *Stencils available on our website at horseandstylemag.com/holiday/ diy2017.pdf starting Dec. 12th

STEPS: 1. Create your stencils: Download and print the horse and evergreen tree stencils PDF at horseandstylemag.com/holiday/diy2017.pdf. Cut out the stencil shapes. 2. Trace the stencils onto the sheets of Bristol board. I used a mix of all three different tree sizes (creating a total of four trees), along with the horse. Once traced, cut the shapes carefully from the Bristol board using an x-acto knife. 3. Apply the gold leaf. Working on one piece at a time, use a paint brush to spread a thin layer of tacky glue on areas of the horse and trees where the gold leaf will be applied. To create a worn, antiqued look, I brushed the glue on a bit haphazardly, leaving gaps between strokes and uneven edges. 4. The gold leaf needs to be handled with care as the sheets are delicate, light-weight and apt to tear easily. However, you must also work quickly to apply the gold leaf before the glue begins to dry, ensuring that it will adhere to the board properly. Use a clean paintbrush to gently press the gold leaf onto the surface of the board over the areas where you have applied the glue. Allow to dry for 15 minutes before using the clean brush again to brush excess gold leaf off the surface of the board. 5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 on both sides of the Bristol board for each tree and the horse. 6. Assemble the two halves of each tree according to instructions on the PDF. 7. Using the lid of the apothecary jar as a guide, trace and cut a circular Bristol board base for your winter scene. Place the circle at the bottom of the jar. 8. Apply glue to the bottom tabs on the horse and tree shapes and position them on the circle of Bristol board at the bottom of the jar. Use the bottom of a paintbrush handle or pencil to push the tabs down onto the circle as the glue dries. Allow everything to dry for at least 15 minutes. Tip: Before applying any glue, you may want to place the trees and horse in the jar to see which arrangement looks and fits best. 7. Sprinkle fake snow over the scene in the jar until the Bristol board base is completely hidden.
