Welcome As we count down to the reopening of Perth Theatre later in 2017, we continue to take theatre to our audiences in unexpected ways. Foot and mouth drama And Then Come the Nightjars tours village halls and local arts venues from Cumbria to Crieff. A function room in Perth’s Station Hotel turns theatre set for The 306: Day. The follow up to The 306: Dawn focuses on the battles faced by the women at home while WW1 rages. Little ones and grownups can cosy into a special tent in Perth Concert Hall for Night Light. Theatre comes home in December with our first in-house production in the newly transformed venue – traditional family panto Aladdin. We celebrate ten years of Perth’s Southern Fried Festival with top acts including Nick Lowe, Loudon Wainwright III, Rodney Crowell and Jim Lauderdale. Our popular Celtic Sessions series continues with Mànran and Elephant Sessions, two young Scottish traditional music acts at the top of their game. Perth Piano Sundays season concludes with Christian Zacharias performing works by Schubert, Beethoven and Schumann. RCS Voices perform two 20th Century masterpieces at the culmination of our Lunchtime Concerts series. Highlights from this year’s exciting Perth Festival of the Arts programme include Nigel Kennedy, Jools Holland, The View and Marcus Brigstocke. Young people take centre stage for our Youth Arts Festival and Peter Pan summer school. Local dance schools join forces for the Great Big Dance Show, part of Perth Dance Festival. We continue to explore the relationship between visual and performance art with our latest Threshold artspace exhibition Encore. As Perth bids to become UK City of Culture 2021, our extensive programme of shows and community activities plays a central role in showcasing what a happening place we are lucky enough to live, learn and work in! The opulent sounds of Frank Martin's double choir mass are coupled with Cinq Rechants which has been described as perhaps the most personal and unbuttoned of all Messiaen's works.
Nicola Benedetti opens the Perth Festival of the Arts with an intimate evening’s recital and ‘in conversation with’ playing a new programme of classical works for violin and piano, alongside her duo partner, Alexei Grynyuk. Perth Concert Hall is the ideal setting to showcase Nicola’s individual interpretation of exquisite smaller scale pieces and provides the perfect contrast to the orchestral repertoire that she performs more often in Scotland and the rest of the world. Rachel Sermanni is a Scottish folk musician from Carrbridge. An accomplished storyteller, she writes rich, thoughtful lyrics which belie her twenty something years. Her folk noir style ranges from gentle to grungy.
Award-winning singer and composer Luke Daniels brings us a top traditional trio with an original 19th century Polyphon machine as part of their performance. Justin Currie and The Pallbearers with support
Fri 26 May: 8pm | Perth Concert Hall £26.50; concessions* £24.50; school children £11.50 (inc £1.50 booking fee per ticket) Singer/songwriter Justin Currie was the bassist/vocalist/chief songwriter for Scottish folk-pop outfit Del Amitri. The Glasgow native released six full-length records between 1982 and 2002 before embarking on a solo career. Currie’s proven gift for infectious melodies paired with wry, earnest, and occasionally barbed lyrics carried over to his solo work as well. His 2007 solo debut What Is Love For was a highly introspective collection of lovelorn ballads that explored the darker corners of the heart, while 2010’s The Great War signalled a return to the bittersweet mid-tempo jangle pop of Del Amitri. His fourth album of this series, This Is My Kingdom Now is released this spring.
Halfway To Paradise: The Billy Fury Story Mon 25 Sep: 7.30pm | Perth Concert Hall £25.50; concessions £23.50 (inc £1.50 booking fee per ticket) A shy young 19 year old Liverpudlian songwriter called Ronnie Wycherley was discovered by legendary rock impresario Larry Parnes who re-christened him Billy Fury and promoted him as Britain’s own Elvis. In February 1959 he entered the UK Top 20 with his own composition Maybe Tomorrow, the first of an unbelievable 29 hit records including Colette, Half Way To Paradise, Jealousy, I’d Never Find Another You, Like I’ve Never Been Gone, Once Upon a Dream, Last Night Was Made For Love, When Will You Say I Love You? and In Summer. The sensational Colin Gold stars as Fury in this electric and emotional celebration and he’s backed by Fury’s Tornados, Billy’s own 1970’s live band.

NICK LOWE LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III
Back in the 70’s Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented and charismatic, the one-time teen idol sold more than 60 million albums, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame. But at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more. Why did the man who wrote Father and Son, Moon Shadow and Where do the Children Play? turn his back on the world? Featuring Australian singer Darren Coggan, Peace Train is a night of music and storytelling which seeks out the man in the music and tells the story behind the songs.
