Welcome to winter/spring in Perth Concert Hall Whether you are a regular concert attender, occasional gig goer, enthusiastic join-in participant, passionate theatre lover or eager art appreciator, we hope you will find something to capture your interest this season. Fresh from the success of our recent Nicola Benedetti weekend, we are delighted to present a further UK exclusive residency with world-class period-instrument quartet Quatuor Mosaïques. We also continue to showcase a host of international and upcoming musicians in our popular classical series. Our contemporary music programme ranges from the traditional brilliance of Karen Matheson, Breabach and McGoldrick, Doyle and McCusker, to ground-breaking band The Stranglers and the seminal voices of Lulu, Heather Small and Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Gregory Porter. Jackie The Musical will transport you back to the seventies to the tracks of your youth. The horrors of life with teenagers is exposed in Mum’s the Word 2. And, looking ahead to May, we are delighted to announce an exclusive co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland. Staged in a Perthshire barn, The 306: Dawn is based on true soldiers’ experiences and is the first in a cycle of three new First World War plays. As work continues to restore and redevelop Perth Theatre, our Threshold artspace exhibition, Interval, explores the relationship between visual arts and theatre. You can get involved through our extensive creative learning programme for children and adults. And top off your trip with a visit to our sparkling Glassrooms Café for coffee, lunch or a pre-show meal.

Memorable highlights ... Our 10th Anniversary season has already provided memorable highlights with Alison Balsom’s performance in September and the wonderful October weekend with Nicola Benedetti and Friends in partnership with BBC Radio 3. The spring season is no less exciting. Following our New Year in Vienna gala concert we present a semi-staged performance of Mozart’s Così fan tutte by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Perth Piano Sundays continue with Steven Osborne and Alasdair Beatson as well as a debut for Tom Poster, former winner of the Scottish Piano Competition. In February we present a UK exclusive residency with Quatuor Mosaïques. Acknowledged as the world’s leading string quartet playing on period-instruments, they will be joined by pianist Susan Tomes for performances of Mozart and Haydn. Add to these our ever popular Perth Concert Series and Lunchtime Concerts and spring 2016 looks very appetising indeed. James Waters Creative Director, Classical Music

Schubert Impromptus D935, No 1 and No 4 Debussy Masques Debussy Images Debussy L’isle joyeuse Rachmaninov Etudes tableaux Steven Osborne is quite simply one of the finest pianists in the world. He has a remarkable range of repertoire, both in recital and concerto, and has twice won Gramophone awards for his recordings. This programme is no exception: it includes some of Schubert’s most haunting late music and visits Debussy’s unique sound world before concluding with the remarkable romantic virtuosity of Rachmaninov’s Etudes tableaux. ‘vast technical command was balanced by penetrating insight and an expressivity that seems to derive from a more than usually empathetic instinct’ The Guardian

Sun 28 Feb: 3pm

Alasdair Beatson is developing a wonderful series of beautifully planned programmes. Here Mozart’s grief-stricken but controlled classicism is contrasted with the quirky brilliance of Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas, and Janáček’s austere expressionism counterbalances the hedonistic luxury of Scriabin’s intoxicating harmonies. ‘Beatson’s non-showy, secure technique is very impressive, and there is a definition and rhythmic incisiveness to his performing style that draws you into the music. Roll on his next recital’ Classical Source

Sun 27 Mar: 3pm

Winner of the 2007 Scottish Piano Competition, Tom Poster is now in considerable demand as recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist with orchestras including the SCO, The Hallé and the European Union Chamber Orchestra. His beautifully varied programme underlines the breadth of his repertoire. ‘his versatility and unerring sense of what works best marks him out as a musician’s musician and everyone in the business should be beating a path to his door’ Seen and Heard International

Sun 8 May: 3pm

We are delighted to welcome Paul Lewis back to Perth Concert Hall. His series of Schubert recitals were a highlight of recent years and his career has now reached the highest pinnacles of world renown. The programme includes both early and late Brahms and concludes with Liszt’s spectacular Dante Sonata to finish our series in a blaze of brilliant virtuosity.

Mozart’s String Quartets dedicated to Haydn are at the pinnacle of the classical repertoire. Haydn and Mozart’s mutual admiration is well known – they even played chamber music together. This friendship is witnessed by Mozart’s charming dedication ‘A father who had resolved to send his children out into the great world took it to be his duty to confide them to the protection and guidance of a very celebrated Man.’ This UK exclusive weekend presents the complete set performed by Quatuor Mosaïques, indisputably the world’s leading string quartet performing on period instruments. They are joined by Susan Tomes, well known to Perth audiences for her stunning series of recitals with the quartet’s leader Erich Höbarth. The Mozart is set in context by music by the dedicatee Haydn. As well as the string quartets, the weekend also includes a recital by Susan Tomes and a performance of Mozart’s F major concerto K 413 in the composers own version for piano quintet. ‘…this was some of the most intuitive, candid and affectionate ensemble playing I’ve heard …..together, she and Höbarth gelled seamlessly and inspired real playfulness: the artful junctions between phrases, the cheerful buoyancy of dance rhythms, the shared joy in virtuosity that neither took too seriously’ The Guardian on Susan Tomes and Erich Höbarth Book all four concerts at the same time and pay £74; concessions £66 (inc £1.50 booking fee per ticket)

Rachmaninov’s Second is surely the world’s most romantic piano concerto, and with soloist Boris Giltburg it’s the passionate heart of a Valentine’s concert that’s much more than just a brief encounter. Gustav Mahler sends a tender love-letter to his beautiful young wife; under the blue skies of Italy, Tchaikovsky dreams of dark eyes and scented nights; and in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, a silver rose is the key to love at first sight. If music is the food of love, then this is a Michelin-starred banquet!

James MacMillan dedicated his Violin Concerto to the memory of his mother and, as one critic put it, ‘this is a work so full of ideas that you might wonder if he couldn’t have written two concertos’. In the hands of its dedicatee, Vadim Repin, it’s an arresting companion-piece for Beethoven’s much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) ’Pastoral’ Symphony, and the quiet revolution of Debussy’s sensuous Prélude works chosen by Donald Runnicles both to complement and to strike sparks off each other.

Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle is not little and certainly not solemn. It is full of operatic solos, ensemble pieces and is a choral tour de force. Showing a debt to Bach in its style, Rossini referred to the Petite Messe Solennelle as ‘the last mortal Sin of my Old Age’.

The Trials of Galileo

The stage is set for a drama programme which will entertain, move and amuse you this season. Perth Concert Hall welcomes Mum’s the Word 2, a brand-new version of the original hit show updated to include the horrors of living with teenagers. Grab your girlfriends and relive the seventies to the tracks of your youth with Jackie the Musical. Witty, chilling and passionate one-man rollercoaster, The Trials of Galileo describes the scientist’s vain struggle to pit proof against church persecution.

By Nic Young, Starring Tim Hardy

Under 5s will be entranced by the charming tale Polar Bears Go Up. As work progresses on the restoration of Perth Theatre’s Edwardian auditorium and redevelopment of the building, we go out and about to Perth Museum and Art Gallery for The Lost Things, about a boy’s journey through a fantastical world of lost items and people. And, looking ahead to May, we are delighted to announce an exclusive co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland. Staged in a Perthshire barn, The 306: Dawn is based on true soldiers’ experiences and is the first in a cycle of three new plays to commemorate the First World War. This reprimand by Pope Urban describes Galileo’s tragedy; a mistaken belief that if he supplied the church with proof, he would enlighten the world while escaping persecution. He understood the science better than any man alive, but never grasped the politics. Until it was too late… This witty, chilling, and passionate one-man rollercoaster stars Tim Hardy and is written by Emmy Award-winner Nic Young. Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no Facebook, when teenage girls waited with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine. In Jackie The Musical we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from the pages of her old Jackie annuals. The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages she visited as a girl start to influence her future and Jackie discovers the one person in control of her life is... her. Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends), Olivier Award nominee Graham Bickley (Ragtime) and Nicholas Bailey (EastEnders), Jackie The Musical is accompanied by a pulsating sound track of classic 70s hits. Thrill once more to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more. This fun and feisty night out is a must see. Let’s take a much-needed pause and reflect Most theatre performances revolve around an interval – the half-way comfort break enabling us to prolong the suspension of disbelief and reflect collectively on the ideas and intensify the dramatic act. By engaging with the concept of the interval, we take a pause from the performances staged at Perth Theatre to offer you an extended interval. Rather than a few moments, this interval will last a year intersected by three quarterly exhibitions at Threshold artspace. Interval is the first of these exhibitions about the relationship between visual arts and theatre. It will aim to examine the past, present and future of Perth Theatre - Scotland’s oldest repertory theatre company, while the historic venue is being restored and redeveloped for the 21st Century. Visual artists developing what came gradually to be known as performance or live art even founded their practice on a rejection of everything theatre had come to represent. Marina Abramovic, for instance, recalled her opposition: ‘Theatre was an absolute
