MOVEMENT
#MargaretMorris @HorsecrossPerth An exhibition of dance, drama, music, photography, archives and artist’s films celebrating the cultural legacy of the artistic diva Margaret Morris (1891-1980) – a cross between Isadora Duncan and David Bowie Curated by Iliyana Nedkova & Wendy Timmons
15 Oct 2016 - 15 Jan 2017 1. Movement (2016) 22-channel artist’s film installation + single-channel artist’s film Theresa Pickles
‘Who is Margaret Morris, I kept asking myself, until I realised that this contemporary Renaissance woman artist lives in everyone of us. My creative documentary is an attempt to capture Margaret’s flamboyant, colour-saturated personality and explore her deep relationship to Perth and Scotland’ Theresa Pickles
2. Fresh Fresh Air (2016) 22-channel artist’s film installation + single-channel artist’s film with sound Su Grierson featuring Brigid McCarthy (dance)
‘Margaret Morris is an inspiration for many women artists but I felt that my interest in the tradition and politics of landscape resonates with her pioneering environmental aesthetics.’ Su Grierson
3. we record ourselves (2016) 22-channel artists’ film installation + single-channel artist’s film with sound Natalia + Owa Barua, Simon Ellis and Katrina McPherson
‘As a screendance artist I identify with Margaret Morris’ turn towards improvisation. Our artists’ film is an improvised interplay between reality and non-reality, fact and fiction, between the archaeology of ideas and archives.’ Katrina McPherson
4. signs of direction (2016) 22-channel artists’ film installation + single-channel artist’s film with sound + artist’s prints Brian Hartley with Pip Hill, Raymond MacDonald, Jim McEwan, Una McGlone, Jer Reid and Solène Weinachter ‘Fred Daniels’ photographs of Margaret Morris and her dance students came to my attention first. I was then struck by the vitality and modernity of Margaret Morris, the visiual artist, reflected even in her own notation for dance. In my own artistic practice I also approach dance through drawing, painting and photography.’ Brian Hartley
5. Margaret Morris Movement (1923) a suite of eight enlarged photographic prints courtesy of the Fergusson Gallery Fred Daniels (1892-1959) A selection of staged dance photography as portraits of Margaret Morris and her dance students.
