Welcome to the 2015/16 Classical Season at Perth Concert Hall.

Perth Piano Sundays

Unbelievably Perth Concert Hall is 10! We celebrate in style with a visit by Alison Balsom, the world famous trumpeter, performing Haydn with the BBC SSO in a concert which also includes Rachmaninov’s wonderful 2nd Symphony.

Some of the world’s finest players visit Perth for this exceptional series of piano concerts on a Sunday afternoon. Join us for a carvery lunch beforehand to make the perfect day out in Perth.

The autumn opens with a semistaged performance of Wagner’s die Walküre in Jonathan Dove’s celebrated reduced scoring. A distinguished cast includes Ronald Samm and Janice Watson. October sees Nicola Benedetti, Scotland’s favourite classical musician, leading a weekend residency of wonderful chamber music performed with her favourite musical partners. Perth Piano Sundays enters its third season with concerts by Denis Kozhukhin and Piers Lane and the Perth Concert Series opens with the last three of Sibelius’s symphonies conducted by the BBC SSO’s new music director Thomas Dausgaard. Add in a lunchtime series which includes the brilliant Danish String Quartet, Dunedin Consort playing Bach Concertos and Schubert’s Winterreise and you have an autumn which we are hugely looking forward to. We hope to see you there! James Waters Creative Director, Classical Music

Two times Gramophone Award Winner, his range of repertoire both in recital and concerto is remarkable. The programme is no exception including some of Schubert’s most haunting late music, visiting Debussy’s unique sound world before concluding in the remarkable romantic virtuosity of Rachmaninov’s Etudes Tableaux.

Alasdair Beatson is developing a wonderful series of beautifully planned programmes. Here Mozart’s grief-stricken but controlled classicism is contrasted with the quirky brilliance of Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas, and Janáček’s austere expressionism counterbalances the hedonistic luxury of Scriabin’s intoxicating harmonies.

Emmanuel Krivine, conductor Karen Cargill, mezzo soprano

Jean-Claude Picard, conductor Boris Giltburg, piano

Famed for the elegance and energy of his colourful performances, SCO Principal Guest Conductor Emmanuel Krivine, directs the SCO in a powerful programme of richly Romantic music. Wagner’s touchingly tuneful Siegfried Idyll was written as a surprise birthday present for his wife Cosima, and renowned Scottish MezzoSoprano Karen Cargill joins the SCO for the same composer’s intensely expressive Wesendonck Lieder. Krivine opens the programme with the infectious jollity of Brahms’s glorious St Anthony Variations, and closes with the high drama of Schubert’s Unfinished.

Rachmaninov’s Second is surely the world’s most romantic piano concerto and with soloist Boris Giltburg, it’s the passionate heart of a Valentine’s concert that’s much more than just a brief encounter. Gustav Mahler sends a tender love-letter to his beautiful young wife under the blue skies of Italy, Tchaikovsky dreams of dark eyes and scented nights; and in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, a silver rose is the key to love at first sight. If music is the food of love, then this is a Michelin-starred banquet!

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Thomas Dausgaard, conductor ‘Other composers mix brightly coloured cocktails’ said Jean Sibelius. ‘I offer pure, cool water‘. From the radiant sunrise that opens the Fifth to the deep tranquillity of the Sixth and the windswept peaks of the Seventh, Sibelius’s last three Symphonies are like a force of nature. For the BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor-Designate, Thomas Dausgaard, this is music that can transform the very way you hear the world; ‘at once monumental and intimately personal’ is how one critic described his approach to Sibelius. Under Dausgaard’s direction, this single-evening Sibelius trilogy will be an exhilarating journey through one of the 20th century’s greatest and most inspiring musical minds. In the hands of its dedicatee, Vadim Repin, it’s an arresting companion-piece for Beethoven’s much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) Pastoral Symphony, and the quiet revolution of Debussy’s sensuous Prélude; works chosen by Donald Runnicles both to complement, and to strike sparks off each other. Emmanuel Krivine, conductor Tedi Papavrami, violin

Join the RSNO as it celebrates its 125th anniversary with two contrasting pieces from its ‘birthday’ composer Prokofiev, who was born in the same year the Orchestra was founded. Glass slippers, ugly sisters and fairy godmothers... Cinderella was a natural subject for a musical storyteller like Sergei Prokofiev, and if you love Romeo and Juliet, you’ll be enchanted by this, his most magical ballet score. The RSNO’s Bolshoi-trained Conductor Emeritus Alexander Lazarev brings out the gypsy in Rachmaninov, and Nikolai Lugansky shares Prokofiev’s rarely-heard Fourth Concerto. It’s insanely difficult, but don’t worry, Lugansky could play it with one hand behind his back!

Respected equally for the power and the poetry of his searing performances, exceptional Albanian violinist Tedi Papavrami joins the SCO for one of the most evocative works in the violin repertoire, Sibelius’s compelling Violin Concerto. Principal Guest Conductor Emmanuel Krivine opens the concert with Mussorgsky’s atmospheric Khovantchina Prelude and closes with Beethoven at his most heroic in the noble passions of the great Eroica Symphony. The focus of a packed autumn music line-up is our 10th Anniversary celebrations in September.

Richard Thompson Electric Trio

We’re putting together a unique show starring some superb locally-sourced acoustic musicians who’ve matured into major players during Perth Concert Hall’s first decade. Made in Perthshire will see two formidable players and composers, Ross Ainslie and Patsy Reid, leading a superb band in a night of songs and tunes old and new that will also highlight songwriters Fraser Anderson and Lisa Rigby.

Named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most acclaimed songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic - from the Americana Music Association in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Folk Awards and the prestigious Ivor Novello award.

Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat return with The Most Important Place In The World, their long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s Scottish Album of the Year Award winner. While the palette utilised across these 12 extraordinary nocturnes bears a direct connection to that of Everything’s Getting Older, Wells and Moffat here deploy a broader and deeper panoply of sounds, touching on electro-pop (The Eleven Year Glitch) as much as the tuxedo seductions of Bacharach and David (Any Other Mirror) and Caledonian gospel (Street Pastor Colloquy, 3am) as they explore the tension between domesticity and devilry, temperance and temptation, in their own inimitable fashion. ‘proof that stories of stagnation and decline in everyday life can still conversely inspire music of great value and beauty’ The Observer

Above all though, he is a unique and fearsomely talented singer-songwriter. For every protest song (Between The Wars, There Is Power In A Union, Never Buy The Sun), there is a declaration of love (Must I Paint You A Picture, or Brickbat, from the new album, Chasing Rainbows). At their best, Billy’s songs present ‘the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal’ The Guardian.

Caledonia Cantata with Strings and Celtic Musicians

Fri 6 Nov: 8pm | Perth Concert Hall £22; no concessions (+ £2 booking fee per ticket) The Perthshire Amber Festival is proud to present the premiere of this special synthesis of the wealth of Dougie’s songs and instrumental music. This very special performance brings together Perth favourite Dougie MacLean (famed for his song Caledonia and composition The Gael used in Last of the Mohicans) with some of Scotland’s finest musicians including Jenna Reid (fiddle), Ross Ainslie (pipes, whistles, mandocello), Sorren Maclean (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Iain Sandilands (percussion) as well as the wonderful strings of the Perthshire Ensemble. Dougie MacLean needs no introduction; as singer, songwriter, composer and instrumentalist, no artist captures the soul of Scotland with more authenticity or emotion. During his 40 years as a musician, audiences have been thrilled by performances of his now classic songs as well as his Perthshire Amber Suite, the Muir of Gormack, The Search and in 2014 the Perthshire Cantata. His Caledonia Cantata beautifully fuses together the best of all this previous work with some wonderful new songs and, of course, his engaging stories. Once again he’ll present ‘an irresistible tapestry of tunes, rhythms, instrumental and orchestral colours, harmonies and texture.’ (Michael Tumelty, The Herald) and include much loved songs like Broken Wings, She Will Find Me, This Love Will Carry and, of course, the song that’s been called ‘Scotland’s alternative national anthem’, Caledonia. A full concert experience not to be missed!

An evening with James Yorkston, The Pictish Trail & Withered Hand Mon 25 Jan: 7.30pm | Norie-Miller Studio, Perth Concert Hall £14.50; concessions £12.50 (+£1.50 booking fee per ticket) Age Guidance: 14+ Three of Scotland’s finest and most distinctive songwriters join forces for what promises to be a magical evening of music and chat. An original member of Fife’s famous Fence collective, James Yorkston emerged as a solo artist in 2001 and has since released 8 acclaimed albums. Johnny Lynch, aka The Pictish Trail, is something of a conundrum. Once he begins to sing, Lynch’s extraordinary vocals reveal hidden depths that can subdue the most rowdy audiences into a blissful silence. Withered Hand is the nom de plume of Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Dan Willson. He has come to be celebrated as a songwriter and lyricist of rare wit and remarkable honesty.

Breabach are now firmly established as Scotland’s leading folk band. Ten Years Old is the New Young 26 Contemporary Art

01738 621031

While we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Threshold artspace – Perth’s one-of-a-kind museum for contemporary art – with the pertinent Ten exhibition, I am reminded of October 2005 when we teamed up with Perth’s own Centre for Mountain Studies to co-commission our first artwork by its Director, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist and artist Martin Price.

In October 2015, we are delighted to welcome Professor Price back as part of our new group exhibition Mountains echoing the title and the vision of his own seminal book Mountains. Covering a quarter of the earth’s land surface, on a human timescale mountains seem eternal, yet on geological timescales these dramatic land forms are young. Through a ‘mountain’ range of recent as well as new commissions and acquisitions, I hope together with my esteemed co-curators to encourage a broader critical inquiry into the changes affecting mountain environments. We do hope to make global change in mountains visible. We do hope to unravel why ‘we are all mountain people’.

Looking forward and in anticipation of our forthcoming season of dance on screen, do join in our brand-new Horsecross 50+ Club which will introduce the legendary Margaret Morris to Perth with three taster sessions as part of Luminate: Scotland’s Festival of Creative Ageing. Make sure you also join me for a relaxed guided tour of our exhibitions and of our new Threshold artspace website as part of our increasingly popular Coffee, Croissant and Art Wednesdays. This has estranged him from his wife, Patricia, who is in hospital and suffering from depression. Over the course of one day, Leroy and Patricia try to come to terms with Leroy’s choices and Patricia’s ‘illness’, as they take a tentative step towards reconciliation and a brave new future. The Last Yankee reflects Miller’s themes of the devastating consequences for those who ‘fail’ to achieve the mythical riches of the American Dream. Age Guidance: 16+
