Schubertiad 2011 The Prince Consort and Friends
When one thinks of Schubert, one thinks first and foremost of melody. Many of his most marvellous orchestral works are suffused with easily singable tunes. This gift is experienced in its most pure form in his extraordinary song output. This year’s Schubertiad focuses on Schubert’s vocal music in the context of his predecessors and successors framed by three key instrumental works - ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet, ‘Arpeggione’ Sonata and ‘Wanderer Fantasy’ – and some of his unforgettable music for piano duet. The Prince Consort is a dynamic group of singers led by pianist Alisdair Hogarth. They are rapidly developing a unique reputation for their performances at the Wigmore Hall, London. Their mission is to reinvent the great tradition of song recitals in a way which makes it fresh for new audiences. Having The Prince Consort join us for the weekend means we have the luxury of four singers in residence enabling us to hear several singers in each concert and also to experience vocal ensemble music both by Schubert and also his great admirer and successor Brahms. Particularly fascinating is the opportunity to hear a series of Schubert songs performed in their original versions and then performed in their arrangements by virtuoso pianists such as Liszt and Rachmaninoff. Alisdair Hogarth will be a tired man by Sunday evening! The artists roster is completed by the exciting Escher String Quartet, who have just joined the BBC’s Next Generation Artists scheme, and two artists well known to Perth audiences – Alasdair Beatson and William Conway.
The support from our Schubertiad Circle Members and Patrons is greatly appreciated and we would like to thank the following people for their generous and continued support. “a lively, flexible ensemble which brings together some of the most exciting young singers around” Opera Today on The Prince Consort Saturday 8 October Alisdair Hogarth, piano ~ Anna Leese, soprano # Nicholas Mulroy, tenor* Schubert’s songs provided fantastic fodder for virtuoso pianists of many eras to arrange for inclusion in their concerts. Schubertiad 2011 offers the opportunity here to encounter the songs sung in their original versions as well as arrangements by great pianistic lions of the 19th and 20th centuries. This fascinating and surprising programme also offers the chance to hear soprano Anna Leese, a finalist in the 2011 Cardiff Singer of the World competition. 7.30pm: To a Distant Beloved Schubert Schwanengesang (Heine settings)* Beethoven An die ferne Geliebte# Schubert Schwanengesang (Rellstab settings)~ Jennifer Johnston, mezzo soprano~ Nicholas Mulroy, tenor* Marcus Farnsworth, baritone# Alisdair Hogarth, piano Beethoven, while not a prolific song writer, did compose the first ever real song cycle in ‘An die ferne Geliebte’. This year’s Schubertiad sets Schubert in the context of his predecessors and successors in the German Lieder tradition. The Prince Consort pairs the Beethoven Cycle with Schubert’s haunting and valedictory ‘Schwanengesang’ to poems by Rellstab and Heine. The concluding section of Schubert’s final cycle is performed by Jennifer Johnston following in the footsteps of other mezzo sopranos who have interpreted these wonderful songs. Marcus Farnsworth who performs ‘An die ferne Geliebte’ was the winner of the song prize in this year’s Kathleen Ferrier competition at the Wigmore Hall. Gannochy Auditorium £22.50, £18.50; concessions £20.50, £16.50 (includes booking fee)

“a deservedly popular festival, as adventurous as it is enthralling” The Herald
Sunday 9 October 5pm:
Death and the Maiden
Schubert Schubert
Quartettsatz String Quartet in D minor ‘Death and the Maiden’
Escher String Quartet The brilliant young Escher Quartet joins us from America for this year’s Schubertiad with two scintillating pieces of chamber music. The ‘Quartettsatz’ is a single movement containing enough excitement for a complete string quartet! ‘Death and the Maiden’ is a deeply dramatic work which as well as being loved by concert-goers has also been used extensively as a film and theatre soundtrack. Gannochy Auditorium (unreserved seating) £13, concessions £10.50 (includes booking fee)
7.30pm: Closing Concert Schubert Brahms Schubert Brahms
Fantasie in F minor Liebeslieder Waltzes Variations on an Original Theme Neue Liebeslieder
Anna Leese, soprano Nicholas Mulroy, tenor Alisdair Hogarth, piano
Jennifer Johnston, mezzo soprano Marcus Farnsworth, baritone with Philip Fowke, piano
Schubert was the founder of the great tradition of 19th century song writing: Brahms was one of his most distinguished successors. He took the form of vocal ensemble, which is also presented elsewhere in this year’s Schubertiad, and developed it to its ultimate in his ‘Liebeslieder Waltzes’. In this closing concert they are paired with two of Schubert’s most unforgettable works for piano duet. Gannochy Auditorium £22.50, £18.50; concessions £20.50, £16.50 (includes booking fee)
“Stylistically and tonally, the blend was sensational… A vivid, compelling performance, and one that betrayed more of the composer’s character than he could have planned.” The Independent on Sunday on The Prince Concert performing Brahms Liebeslieder, Jan 09
