Southern Fried Festival, Perth @SouthernFriedPH
WELCOME
Welcome to Southern Fried 2016, whether it’s an entirely new experience for you, you’re a grizzled veteran of many festivals or somewhere in between. With the addition of our new Acoustic Stage sponsored by John Ross Hi-Fi, it’s safe to say that this year’s event is easily the biggest to date with almost 50 acts performing over the weekend and hopefully it’ll be the best too! We always say there’s something for everyone in the line-up, but it’s truer than ever now. We’re very pleased with our glittering array of headline artists and even happier with the way people have responded to it by snapping up tickets in their thousands. As ever though, the real joy of the festival for many is coming across new acts and with so many great musicians and songwriters across all our stages and venues there’s an awful lot of exploring to be done. We’re also delighted to bring no less than three new venues on board for the first time Perth North Church, The Green Room and That Bar - offering the potential for the weekend to be one big voyage of discovery. Finally, we’d like to thank our funders - Perth & Kinross Council, Creative Scotland and The Gannochy Trust - for helping to make Southern Fried possible, and above all to all the people who attend and support the event from near and far. We really couldn’t do it without you. Andy Shearer Festival Director
With thanks to our partners, funders and sponsors

THE NEW MADRIDS
MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER Mary Chapin Carpenter has recorded 14 albums and has sold over 14 million records with her beguiling and thoughtful blend of folk, pop and country. With hits like Passionate Kisses, He Thinks He’ll Keep Her, Down At The Twist And Shout, I Take My Chances and Shut Up And Kiss Me, Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards and two Academy of Country Music awards. For nearly thirty years, she has earned the trust of her audience through her willingness to look deep into herself and share joys and sorrows, good times and bad and never more so than on her nakedly honest new Dave Cobb-produced album, The Things We Are made Of. ‘Carpenter’s vocals have an intimate, plain-spoken quality. Her melodies are instantly memorable, and her lyrics, which concentrate on love, loss, aging and mortality, show a faith in reconciliation, and resurrection’ New York Times
The New Madrids came together in the spring of 2010, forging the sounds and influences of sweet country Americana such as Gram Parsons, Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo and The Band with a harder edge of guitardriven blues, rock and soul. The fruits of this marriage can be heard on the debut album Through the Heart of Town, released in 2014 to critical acclaim and worldwide airplay.
BLUE ROSE CODE In the space of only a short few years and three stellar albums, Blue Rose Code, Edinburgh-born Ross Wilson, has gone from the obscurity of an East London flat to being celebrated as a legacy artist whose work stands alone, unsullied by the restrictions of trend. Touring almost constantly, he pays his dues the old-fashioned way, changing line-up and arrangement of songs depending on the gig and, as such, he’ll perform tonight with a stripped-down countrified trio. ‘Wilson’s songwriting is fantastically varied, and as witty and knowing on the one hand as it can be heart-breaking and sentimental on the other’ The Herald www.bluerosecode.com

COLIN CLYNE After 10 years in California, Colin Clyne left San Diego as a 2-time winner of The Best Acoustic Act at the prestigious San Diego Music Awards. He is back in Scotland and coming off a great year with major support slots and festival gigs. His second album The Never Ending Pageant was produced by Grammy-winning engineer, Alan Sanderson and released to a great reception in 2014. ‘a glorious selection of folk and country rock numbers’ The Sun www.colinclyne.com

Inspired by the ghosts of Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, the twang of Elmore James, the pathos of Billie Holiday and the swagger of Wanda Jackson, Imelda May is a working-class Dublin girl whose self-belief and self-penned songs have taken her to international stardom. After fifteen years singing in other peoples’ bands, Imelda finally took the plunge and went solo in 2006 with raw, fiery rockabilly at the heart of her wide-ranging sound. Since then, the rise and rise of Imelda May has been unstoppable with sold out tours, guest spots with Jools Holland and Jeff Beck, platinum records in Ireland and a UK Number 1 album. ‘a whipcracker of a voice ... songs describing rumpuses, stalkers and sexual predators are delivered with oodles of energy....dangerously rocking’ The Guardian www.imeldamay.com
YOLA CARTER A force of nature and an incredibly talented singer-songwriter, former Phantom Limb front woman Yola Carter was raised on gospel and is a greatly in-demand singer and writer on the dance scene. For the last five years, Marc Marnie has been an unmistakable piratical presence beside the stage or sound desk at Southern Fried. He’s been called a dark man of the darkroom and a maverick, among many other things. His artist’s portfolio speaks volumes and includes portraits of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Muddy Waters, BB King, Nick Cave, Liam Gallagher and Keith Flint. In this selection of photographs taken at Southern Fried between 2011 and 2015 and specially curated for Threshold artspace Perth’s unique museum of contemporary art, Marc gives us a glimpse of his favourite festival as his vision and intuitive approach get to the heart of the music, evoking the essential spirit of the performer, on and offstage.

Southern Fried is proud to present the UK premiere screening of American Epic, a major new television series for BBC4, followed by a Q&A with its director Bernard MacMahon and writer and producer Allison McGourty. Narrated by Robert Redford, American Epic is the never-before-told story of when the invention of electrical sound recording in the 1920s allowed record companies to record and sell music to all the ethnic groups of America for the first time. Recordings from African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Appalachian folk descended from Scots and Irish, Cajuns, Hawaiians and many other nationalities democratised a nation and shaped the way the world communicates today. The film features an extraordinary archive of previously unseen footage that shines a light on America’s unknown musical history. www.americanepic.com
