HELLO AND WELCOME HORSEMART MAGAZINE. Horsemart is delighted to announce our new business partnership with British Showjumping, which will see us powering their classifieds sections on their social site CanterBanter.co.uk. You can read more about this new venture on page 29.
Summer is my favourite time of year, I eagerly await the arrival of this year’s foals. Breeders up and down the country are brimming with hope and excitement for this year’s crop. I have been in this position, and I can safely say there is no feeling like seeing the foal you’ve waiting 11 months for, arrive safely and healthy. Perhaps you are thinking whether you should put your mare in foal this year? Check out our breeding feature looking at different methods, and also a tongue-in-cheek assessment of broodmares.
Many of us would have experienced our arenas flooding over Spring and surfaces freezing over the past few months. I hope that you find our surface feature valuable, with some super advice from Leisure Ride Group on the different surface materials. It would be particularly valuable for those thinking about building an arena this year or adding to their surface. Be sure to plan your summer with our help this year. Check out our diary of events for a full list of up and coming shows and clinics. Good luck!

As winter ends and the warmer days return, owners and horses alike look forward to getting out in the open more. Our horses will have been stabled for much of the colder months and with that comes the risk that they will have problems with stiffness, pain and potential lameness. Pain. Muscle pain, joint pain, we all suffer from it. Humans can communicate location and severity; our beloved animals cannot always do so. As responsible, loving owners we must see the signs that indicate
My horse hasn't finished his first tub of relief yet but the difference it has made is unbelievable!! He was so lame the vet suggested he was put to sleep. Even with 2 packets of Bute he was very lame. Now he's walking sound and drags me to the field. He reared and bucked at the gate yesterday and I just barely kept a hold of him. He used to stand near the gate all day as he was too sore to move around. Now he spends his time stealing the apples from my apple trees! He had been struggling to stand on 3 legs so the farrier could shoe him. This time he had no problem and

RIDING ARENA SURFACES A no-nonsense guide By Toby Elford, Leisure Ride Group Toby is the UK Sales Manager at Leisure Ride Group, a leading provider of arena surfaces.

white paper on riding arena surfaces – it was clear
how each surface material behaves over time. If you

coming to realize the importance of the surface to
you will understand the factors that could affect your
performance and overall health of the horse. Whilst
horses’ wellbeing. So pay attention class! – arena
it’s impossible to condense a 51-page study into a
surface 101 is about to begin:
TYPES OF MATERIAL Surface materials vary, but you have natural materials such as turf, sand and wood, and synthetic ones, such as textile fibre, rubber, PVC and wax – many surfaces, especially those with fancy brand-names are the manufacturers own cocktail of materials and the recipe is a closely guarded not-so-secret – but the basic components are these:
WOODCHIP | Woodchip is a surface material that unlike the others, doesn’t need to be mixed with anything else. Most other surfaces are a mix of sand and additives. Woodchip is relatively inexpensive, so for a long time was used on arenas and racing gallops and it’s enduring popularity is based on price, (or lack of!). Woodchip is exactly that: chipped wood. It has a slight springiness underfoot. Whilst it may save you a few quid, remember that wood is a natural material, and composts down – so your wet arena woodchip will go a bit slimy then eventually turn to soil. Because it’s a material rotting down, the behavior of the surface underfoot is also constantly shifting – a year on and it will ride nothing like the day you put it in. The only answer is to add more woodchip – and to change a woodchip arena over to a more modern surface is costly - a classic case of “buy-cheap-buy-twice”. 16
SAND | Sand is by far the most popular arena surface type. So, I hear you ask: “What’s wrong with lovely natural sand for my arena?” - In riding terms there isn’t the wrong kind of snow – but there is the right kind of sand. Pointed Silica to be exact – and there are only a few quarries in the UK that have it. The only problem is that sand alone lacks the stability and consistency to be the sole ingredient – if you’ve ever seen a sand dune blowing about, or have sunk up to the ankle whilst paddling on the beach you’ll see what I mean – there’s a huge variance in how sand behaves when very wet or very dry. A sand-only surface tends to be dry, dusty, deep and can cause tripping. Builders sand often has salts & chemicals in – so check with your supplier that it is silica suitable for equestrian use. So once you have your sand – the next question is what you add to it to create that lovely firm, cushioned ride. Horsemart
TEXTILE FIBRE | These surfaces are the ones currently used for top level competition – at London 2012 the surface at Greenwich was a sand and fibre surface. The fibres can come from many different sources, and be of many different materials: wool, cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester etc etc. At the budget end of the market there is recycled chopped carpet and underlay – it’s called all sorts of brand names, but its quite simply recycled chopped used carpet. The main pitfall with this stuff is about what actually is in it – the answer is: Whatever the recycling centre was processing that week before it was shipped to you. So it could have natural fibres in that rot or synthetic ones that lack tensile strength – meaning your surface deteriorates over time. At the better end of the market there are fibres that are 100% polyester – meaning they don’t rot and you get many years of consistent riding. The fibres are ultimately there for a few simple reasons: To stabilize and firm up the sand. And to add structure and energy return. The very best sand and fibre surfaces are springy, allowing the hoof and joint to perform the movement without jarring or twisting and where the hoof penetrates only the top half inch of surface – just like natural turf. There is currently an ongoing study by the University of Central Lancashire that is impact-testing all the main fibre surface brands – but whilst we await those results it’s telling that most top competition organisers and many leading professional riders all choose sand and fibre surfaces to compete and train on. PVC | PVC can be bought on its own as an additive for sand, or is often sold readymixed as an off-the-peg surface. The PVC is either granular, or is the chopped up recycled sleeving from electrical cables. When mixed with the sand it produces a frost resistant riding surface. The readymixed surfaces may also contain wax to help the sand/pvc mix bind together. The pitfalls really all boil down to longevity and ride depth. These surfaces tend to ride deep, and the harrows to tend them are the leveling type – moving material around the school to return it to flat. For the waxed ones, the wax eventually deteriorates and the ride goes deeper and deeper – but can be reversed by re-waxing. Again however, top-level competition doesn’t take place on this surface type as the competitions demand a surface where the horses go “off-the-top”. Spring 2017
RUBBER | Good old rubber…or bad old rubber – it really depends on who you talk to. Some hate it, others swear by it. Either way it’s advisable to simply understand it’s properties and pitfalls and make your own mind up. Equestrian rubber is mostly recycled auto rubber – that’s chopped up synthetic car tyres to you and me – designed to perform on asphalt roads with the warmth that friction generates. It’s mostly advertised as 99.9% wire-free, so there’s always that 0.1% somewhere. To make it ready to be used in arenas they strip the wire out and shred it. Rubber is bouncy, frost resistant and drains well. However it’s oft reported to have a tendency to break down over time and turn the arena black under the surface of the sand. It’s also costly to get rid of as it’s not very enviro-friendly (have you ever tried to take a tyre to the council tip?). Also consider the effect of walking on rubber – arguably too much rubber in an arena has masses of energy return– but the forces go in all directions, which raises questions about sureness of footing. It’s down to personal opinion, but ask yourself if the Olympics, or World Equestrian Games took place on a rubber surface? WAX | Arena wax is used in conjunction with a sand-based surface – it won’t stabilize sand itself – rather is used as a binder to help sand and additives stay together. It can also offer a degree of cold resistance, as it’s the water content in a surface that freezes, not the components themselves. The London 2012 surface was a waxed surface – and the wax is useful where the user wants to not have to irrigate – especially in indoor arenas, and where water is metered. Because the wax is a dust inhibitor – the surfaces are useful where dust sensitivity in the horse could be an issue. The main drawback is cost – a waxed surface costs considerably more, but the benefits could make it worth spending the extra.
In conclusion – there is plenty the FEI study can help owners, riders and those interested in equine health make an informed choice (you can read it for yourself at http://www.fei.org/system/files/ Equine%20Surfaces%20White%20Paper.pdf). However in the meantime, whilst more research is being done – consider what surface materials offers the most consistency, longevity, quality and firmness of ride and cushioning for the joints - buy the best surface you can afford, and put it on a well-constructed free draining base - the longterm rewards will be felt by both the horse, and your pocket.

TURF | It’s what nature intended – but unless you have your own clerk-of-thecourse, have unlimited acreage, and an army of grounds-people turf isn’t suitable for the average arena – five circuits and you’ll have a pronounced track, and beyond that it deteriorates to mud – a swamp in rain and like concrete in summer. Anyone that’s done Pony Club camp in a field knows exactly what I mean.

EQUINE GASTRIC ULCER SYNDROME Phoebe Parker BVetMed MRCVS Phoebe joined Shotter & Byers Equine Vets in May 2016 and enjoys all aspects of equine practice, she is currently heading up our gastric ulcers campaign and we are currently running an offer on Gastroscoping, as this is the only method to view the stomach and determine the grade of the ulcers if there are any present.
Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is a common condition seen in many different types of horses. It is often missed as the cause of a variety of problems including; poor body condition, both acute and recurrent colic and behavioural and exercise related issues. Although ulcers can occur almost anywhere in the stomach, certain areas are more commonly affected. These are the squamous area
CLINICAL SIGNS MAY INCLUDE: • Poor hair coat and/or

• Poor performance • Girthing pain • Reduced appetite • Acute, recurrent or low grade colic CLINICAL SIGNS IN FOALS MAY INCLUDE: • Intermittent colic • Diarrhoea • Poor appetite • Grinding of teeth (bruxism) • Excess salivation (ptyalism)

naturally secreted by the stomach). The squamous area is relatively poorly defended against exposure to acid when compared to the glandular area. The cause of glandular ulcers is more poorly understood as this area has developed good mechanisms of defence against the constant levels of acid it is exposed to. However it has been shown that acid suppression may benefit ulcers in the glandular region of the stomach as well as the squamous region. 24

TREATMENT Hydrochloric acid is secreted almost constantly by cells within the walls of the stomach, in response to receptors also found in the stomach. These receptors are activated by histamine and these activate a proton pump mechanism that releases the acid. Therefore, there are two main classes of drug aimed at suppressing acid production 1) histamine receptor antagonists and 2) proton pump inhibitors. In reality only the second group of drugs is licensed for use in horses and is the most effective form of treatment for gastric ulceration. Proton pump inhibitors: Although there are several drugs in this class omeprazole is the most well understood and commonly used in horses. This comes in a paste form and is used once a day for the treatment of ulcers. Treatment time usually depends on the grade and type of ulcers identified and the management conditions. Treatment is undertaken for 4 weeks at which stage re-scoping is recommended prior to stopping treatment to assess response to treatment and identify if any improvement or resolution of the ulcers has occurred Histamine Receptor Antagonists: There are three of these available 1) Cimetidine the oldest and cheapest but also the least effective 2) Ranitidine the most commonly used, it has proven effectiveness in horses but needs to be given three times a day which can lead to problems for owners administering 3) Famotidine the newest drug

Dietary management should be aimed at maximising consistent daytime fibre intake and constant provision of water. If a diagnosis of gastric ulcers has been made in your horse then it is important to address any of the risk factors that may be contributing to ulcer formation in your horse. Studies have shown that there are many factors contributing to ulcer development. Some of the risk factors for EGUS are listed below: • High concentrate diet • Intense or increased exercise • Water deprivation • Prolonged/regular transport • Intermittent starvation • Limited access to forage (greater than 6 hours without forage increased the risk by 5 times) • Stress
which only needs to be given twice daily but is very

• Prolonged stabling
Coating/Barrier Agents: Barrier function and dysfunction can play a crucial role in ulcer development and therefore creating a barrier can be an effective component of ulcer treatment. Although rarely effective on its own it can be very effective in combination with other treatment options. The most commonly used drug

AND BREATHE:
a look at SPARAO with Global Herbs Summer Pasture Associated RAO (SPA-RAO) is an inflammatory condition of the lower airways affecting pasture-kept horses. SPA-RAO is characterised by airway inflammation, increased airway mucus production, reduced mucociliary clearance and bronchoconstriction in response to allergen exposure. The cause of the disease is largely unknown but some suggestions include inhaled pollens or outdoor moulds, or ingestion of a pasture-derived pneumotoxin. It most commonly starts at around 9 years of age, although 12% of mature horses have some degree of allergen induced lower airway inflammation. There is no breed or gender predilection, but there does seem to be a heritable component to susceptibility.
Clinical Signs Signs of RAO and SPA-RAO include flared nostrils, increased respiratory rate (tachypnoea), and cough, if the problem has been going on for long enough then the horse can have a heave line. Breathing usually includes a prolonged, laboured expiratory phase. Usually a cough is heard when the horse is exercised or being fed. Mildly affected horses may present with minimal signs at rest but coughing and exercise intolerance are noted during increased performance.
Treatment The most important aspect of treating RAO is to limit exposure to the causal agents. Horses should ideally be kept in a dust-free environment such as a clean stable with rubber matting and no bedding. If hay appears to act as a trigger to the horse, a complete pelleted diet can be fed or alternatively hay should be thoroughly soaked. Alfalfa hay has been previously associated with less respiratory problems than grass hay and may be a preferable source of roughage for affected horses. Horses with severe problems should be rested until their condition has improved. Management of SPA-RAO is similar to RAO except with the addition of pasture avoidance. Affected horses should only be allowed access to pasture during late autumn, winter and early spring.
In the summer months the appearance of large swathes of yellow in the fields can fill the heart of horse owners with dread and many different airborne particles start to wreak havoc. Not only do owners start sneezing but their horses have a very hard time as well. Even walking past a lush hedgerow can make things difficult to manage. Supplementation with traditional blend of plants in syrup or powder form can be a great help. Owners start using it in the spring just as they start to sense the season is changing. It is particularly important to feed such horses correctly to maintain normality because repeated exposure to such an environment can result in long term issues that are much more difficult to come to terms with. Complimentary medication includes the use of herbal products which should commonly contain Malabar nut tree, liquorice, and/or cedar. These can help to maintain normal breathing, normal mucous production and clearance, soothe inflamed mucous membranes, and have anti-bacterial actions.

ON BEING A BREEDER:
Broodmares Being a breeder of horses is a strange and dangerous thing: highly addictive, enormously damaging to one’s bank balance and sanity, and incredibly hard work breeders are, in a nutshell, odd. The Leg-AtEach-Corner doesn’t flap, neither does she bend to human will in any shape of form (or, in fact, bend at all, coming to think of it, mentally OR physically). Known for producing ‘sound’ horses – possibly because they never move, and are hence less likely to insure themselves. Or possibly because they are, in fact, tougher than any other material, man-made or natural, as is demonstrated by their ability to get through any kind of fencing, or walling, known to man…

Mirrors for Training Arena Mirrors are designed to be easily installed or we can offer installation for you if necessary – we supply and fit throughout the UK and Europe.
A
ny dressage rider will benefit from the addition of mirrors to their facility. Mirrors offer the ability to see the job you are doing and react on it immediately, without the intervention of a trainer or video. Your horse can feel the correction at the right time, because you are able to see it in real time. Your trainer can also explain what he or she wants from the movement and it will be clearer to you, because you can see it. Through the use of mirrors you will practice good habits,
48
such as proper angle in your half passes and shoulders ins, or proper seat and leg position. If you are a trainer, the help they give you in teaching flying changes, or making sure the piaffe and passage are even and straight is absolutely irreplaceable. The more time you spend riding correctly the easier it is to repeat in the show arena. www.mirrorsfortraining.co.uk info@mirrorsfortraining.co.uk
