Harry Hall has been looking after Equestrians since 1891 and will continue to do so during these unprecedented times.
This is a very special campaign, celebrating the joys of horses and riding.
THE STORY OF HARRY HALL Yesterday
Way back in the 1870s a young man named Harry Hall began his career as a tailor (and was rather good at it). In 1891 he started his own business “Harry Hall Esq” a bootmaker and tailor - and so the story begins. After World War 2 horses started to become an animal of pleasure and leisure instead of being a workhorse or a war horse. Harry Hall Esq turned its focus to equestrian clothing as horse riding became a popular pastime. By the Swinging Sixties, the international equestrian elite were all dressed in Harry Hall - even the stables regiment at Buckingham Palace. Harry Hall Esq had well and truly arrived on the equestrian scene.
Today
Today at Harry Hall the team continues the dedication and passion shown by the great man himself by offering affordable products and insurance policies as well as membership to the Harry Hall One Club. The Club provides members with an online community that supports one another through the ups and downs of horse riding and ownership. There are also some great member benefits and discounts on lifestyle and equestrian brands, monthly competitions and a free members’ magazine twice a year. The team is a friendly bunch and between them they own 12 horses, 10 dogs, 1 cat, 1 goldfish and not forgetting Happy the

tortoise. They work hard to develop some of the very best equestrian brands and products just for you. All backed up by our wonderful customer service team that is always ready at the end of the phone, email or live chat to help you out.
Tomorrow
Right now we are ‘holding our horses’ because coming very soon to www.harryhall.com is the next generation in rider wear. The design team, headed by Beth and Alice has been busy behind the scenes, researching the very latest technologies to help today’s riders. We are chomping at the bit to show you their creations plus a whole host of yummy new brands and products for you and your horse. When it comes to product savings, we have Chris, the commercial manager, to thank. He’s often spotted hacking out on Jerry, his ex-racehorse, and works constantly to bring you big savings and exclusive sales. At the helm guiding the team is Liz Hopper, Managing Director (aka The Big Cheese) who loves nothing better than being in the great outdoors with Jenny the Lancashire Heeler, who may have short legs, (Jenny that is, not Liz) but boy, can that pooch run fast. Harry Hall Trusted by you, Inspired by you, Here for you. That’s the Harry Hall story, what’s yours?

EQUINE ASSISTED LEARNING Horsemart
Equine Partners CIC exists to support and encourage families in difficult times. We provide Equine Assisted Learning to children teenagers and their families. Coming for a series of (usually 6) sessions with the horses they play, laugh and learn together. As they develop a new appreciation of each other and learn strategies and information to support them in their daily lives we see family dynamics change and life begin to become more comfortable. We are there for any situation that makes family life difficult. Some examples include where there is a diagnosis or suspicion of conditions such as Autism also Bereavement, family break up, stepfamilies, recovering from domestic abuse, adult or child mental health issues such as selfharm and suicide attempts as well as when a child has experienced trauma or attachment difficulties. Young carers, adopted and fostered children and those who have had a disrupted (traumatic) childhood all benefit from time with the ponies.
as well as those who run marathons and do other amazing things to raise funds for us. As you can imagine, like many small charities, the effect of the recent coronavirus lockdown and changes to the way we can work has had a huge impact on us. We have reopened and are seeing families again which is great news. We have to charge for sessions to pay for the upkeep of the ponies and at the moment many families (and the organisations we normally receive payment from) are struggling. If you have any ways you can help sponsor a pony’s upkeep (we have 6!) or a family to attend sessions, donate to our local giving page, fundraise for us or anything else you can offer we would be most grateful and would love to hear from you. Our website is www.equine-partners.co.uk Do please take a look at what we do. We also have a local giving page https://localgiving.org/donation/equinepartners
When families attend the sessions, they will play some carefully designed games, learning about the ponies and also about themselves and discovering new skills to make life work for them. This is an experiential approach so people who find sitting in a conventional consulting room difficult can gain great practical learning with this approach. As a not for profit community interest company we rely on a great band of volunteers who help us take care of the horses and provide the sessions

HORSES FIRST AIDFOR KIT SALE
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR EQUINE FIRST AID KIT? HESTEYRI HORSES SHOW US THEIRS!
By Hesteyri Horses
Most of us know that we should have an extensive first aid kit on the yard at all times, but there is a huge difference between having an idea of what is actually useful for many occasions, and staring at the First Aid section in your tack store, without knowing what to spend money on!
So, what should we have in our first aid kits?
Clippers – Obviously the smaller the better, but we have been known to use big clippers to shave around a wound, it’s no big worry. You can also do some level of the job with scissors, although a bit trickier. What is really important is that you can see the whole wound; when they are hairy it’s hard to assess the damage. It’s also important that no hair can get into the wound, as it’s an infection risk.
A clean bowl – This can be used for mixing up a solution of Hibiscrub and water; very important for cleaning any wounds. You can also use a water bucket if carefully rinsed out. If you don’t have Hibiscrub you can use hot water and table salt, although Hibi is a very handy thing to have around.
Scissors – These are essential, you will need them for cutting dressings and bandages down to size, cutting bits of hair or anything that might get into the wound, and a myriad of other things. We get new pairs regularly because you want them to be really sharp, and it’s important to regularly clean them – the last thing you need in or around a wound is dirt!
We often make up plastic tubs of Hibiscrub and then add a few sections of cotton wool into it and seal it up so that it’s ready to go when we need it. We got the idea from a vet and it works brilliantly – you end up with the equivilent of readymade wet wipes!
Cotton wool – This is very handy for cleaning wounds. You can also use cotton pads or basically anything clean and sanitary. You must throw each bit away and not overuse it and it’s also important not to leave anything in the wound. We like to dilute some Hibiscrub in a tub with some cotton wool, which leaves you with ready to use wipes for wound care! Dressings – It’s good to have these in a variety of shapes and sizes. Non-adhesive bandage – We mean a soft bandage here, not a stable bandage and not vet wrap. This will be used to secure dressings in place primarily, although can often have other uses. These can sometimes be reused but must be sterilised, or washed in the washing machine. Never reuse a dirty bandage.
The bowl’s clean, just stained with iodine... as is a lot of the packaging in our first aid kit! Top tip – store your iodine in a leak-proof container! 12
Vet wrap – Probably one of the most used items; we get through an awful lot of it in abscess season! Used for securing things in place, it must always have a soft layer underneath it as it can be quite uncomfortable if placed near the skin. Horsemart
HORSES FOR FIRST AID KITSALE Horsemart Horsemart
Cotton wool bandage – This is perfect for wrapping around a dressing/poultice before applying vet wrap, to ensure maximum comfort for your horse. Duct tape – This can be used for virtually anything! The most important use is underneath foot poultices, as it protects the bandage from becoming dirty and soaking up moisture from the ground. Stable bandages – If a horse has a leg injury of virtually any kind, bandaging is a very good idea to provide support. Make sure you bandage the pair of legs, or all four, not just one leg. Gamgee or bandage pads underneath are a great idea. Gamgee - Use under stable bandages. You can also use bandage pads, make sure they are nice and clean! Animalintex – or other poultice material (nappies are good and very cheap), essential for poulticing abscesses or puncture wounds. The only thing to really be careful of when poulticing is making sure you do not poultice a wound near a joint, as it can draw out joint fluid if the joint capsule is damaged. Wound spray – Having a spray is really handy as it can help clean the wound out and is fast and easy to apply for smaller scrapes. We have several different sprays: an iodine spray which we use for feet; a purple spray which we use for nicks and scrapes; and an Aloe Vera spray which we use for wounds after washing with water. Wound cream – It is also useful to have a couple of different creams, one being anti-bacterial and one barrier type cream. The anti-bacterial you can use on just about anything, the barrier cream, reserve for an outside layer to stop flies bothering small cuts. Our favourites are Aloe Vera Jelly and Aloe Propolis for anti-bacterial (we use them on everything), and NAF ‘Love the Skin’ for everything else! The great thing about ‘Love the Skin’ is that it’s kind to the skin and also deters flies.
Sterile saline – This can be useful for cleaning wounds where you have no available water source. You may need a syringe to apply. Autumn 2020
Syringe – We try to keep lots of empty, sterile syringes around; they’re brilliant for oral medication and flushing out wounds with the liquid of your choice. The syringe means that you can pressurise it slightly which can be really useful! Sun cream – We have tubes of sun cream all over the yard because it’s so vital in summer! Really important for any patches of pink pigmented skin, like on face markings and noses – some horses may need some around their heels when they have white socks too! Avoid using barrier creams high in oil for sun cream, they don’t protect as well and the oil can heat up painfully. Thermometer – Your horse’s temperature should be around 37-38 degrees. It’s a good idea to monitor your own horse’s normal temperature so that if they’re under the weather, you can tell if they have a temperature that’s unusual for them. Headtorch – This can be handy, although we usually use the old standby of getting someone to hold a phone torch! Parasite Poison – It’s really useful to have things like lice spray or powder, mite powder and a spare wormer. We use Deosect for ticks, mites or lice, and we generally have a decent, all bases wormer on standby in our box. Remember that lice and mites are no different from worms. They do not mean that you are neglecting your horses, horses just get them. We poo-pick our fields twice a day and feed the horses mainly from raised hay crates, but they still get worms occasionally! The same can be said for lice and mites; don’t be ashamed if your horse has them, just treat them. It’s great to have powder on hand at the end of winter too, as we like to powder the insides of any rugs which aren’t being sent off for washing. We can then be sure that nothing will be living in them while they are stored for summer. So that’s our list of things that we regularly use and find essential! We also did a little vlog on what is actually in our first aid kit, which can be found on the Horsemart YouTube Channel. 13

Just another day at the office! We are living in an ever changing world, more of us are working from home, and need a dedicated space. Have you thought about using your conservatory? It can often be too cold or too warm, often too bright or too leaky when it rains. Then why not replace your existing polycarbonate or glass conservatory roof with a new tiled and insulated roof and transform your conservatory into the workspace you deserve. We can also change the glass in your conservatory. Planitherm 4S for example is twice the thermal efficiency of standard double glazing and will keep the heat out in summer, creating a much more stable environment for working in and looks great too, and it’s a lot more affordable than you may think. Call now for a free, no obligation quote on 01323 844944 because we all need a safe place to work from.

BEST FLY REPELLENTS
Our 10 Best Fly Repellents For 2020 REAL RIDER REVIEWS!
By Genevieve de Lande Long Finding the right fly repellent for your horse can be a bit of a minefield, and is often a case of trial and error. The wide range of options available can be overwhelming, with active ingredients, application methods, and effectiveness all playing a part in the buying decision. So, we’ve put together this guide to help you make an informed decision, without the stress! Each product has been personally recommended by one of our brand ambassadors or a member of our inhouse team, having been tried and tested thoroughly by them.
THINGS TO CONSIDER... Active Ingredients The main ingredient used in each solution will differ from one product to another. It is important to ensure that the active ingredient used is suitable for use on the intended horse(s). Active ingredients include insecticides (which kill the insects), repellents (which simply repel the insects), and synergists (which are additives that increase the effectiveness of the insecticides and repellents). Certain products will not be suitable for young horses, pregnant or lactating mares, and horses with broken or sensitive skin. Always check the ingredients in the product before use and follow the instructions on the label carefully, looking out for any manufacturer warnings about unsuitability. 20
Another factor to consider is the quantity in which the active ingredient is present in the repellent. Those with a higher percentage of the active ingredient will naturally be more effective than others. Some products contain ingredients that are not FEI approved, so if you compete it’s worth checking an up to date list of banned substances, to ensure the repellent you choose meets with their regulations. If you prefer to use only completely natural products on your horse then there are also plenty of options available that contain only naturally sourced ingredients. Please note: We recommend performing a patch test of any new repellent purchased before full use. The patch test should be performed on all horses on which the repellent is intended for use. As with humans, some horses have allergies to certain ingredients, where others do not. In the case of a severe reaction, please ensure you consult a veterinarian.
Base Ingredient There are two types of base for a fly repellent; water or oil. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Oil-based repellents tend to work better initially as they cover the flies more effectively, causing them to suffocate or drown. They also give the coat a nice shiny look after application, however, this also means their coat then attracts a lot of dust, so can look messy quite quickly. Another slight Horsemart
BEST FLY REPELLENTS
Water-based repellents often aren’t quite as good at staying on the coat, especially in the event of sweating or rain, but a lot of these products will contain extra ingredients to help them stay put. Water-based products are also generally kinder to the horse’s skin and are absorbed more easily. Plenty of lotion, ointment and cream repellents combine a mixture of water and oil in varying proportions, with the addition of emulsifiers to aid the mixing of the two base ingredients.
Application Method There are many different ways to apply fly repellents, with the range of products on the market developed specifically to cater to the differing needs of horses and their owners. Here are the different types of application available (there may even be more!); • Spray
• Roll-on
• Cream
• Wipes
• Lotion
• Shampoo
• Gel
• Soap
• Liquid With this in mind, finding the right form of application will be a personal choice based on various factors such as ease, convenience, quantity, and location (both of the area being treated and the environment you’re in). Sprays are the main choice for convenience and value, as they can cover a larger area with minimal effort and can be used on rugs and tack as well as your horse. However, for the best results when using sprays, we found that it helps to brush the product into the coat after application to ensure it stays on the coat for longer.
is even more beneficial if your horse is somewhat resistant to your efforts to keep them fly-free! There are lots of products available that do a great job at protecting your horse for longer durations, however, this is often at the sacrifice of some other factor, so it’s about achieving the right balance for you and your horse.
WE RECOMMEND… So here are our personal recommendations for fly repellents we have found to be highly effective, including what it is that we like about them and why! Please note: Before applying any fly repellent, it is important to make sure that your horse’s coat is dust-free, as a dirty coat will reduce the effectiveness of any repellent. Brush your horse thoroughly prior to application to get them as clean as possible, giving the repellent the best chance of sticking to the surface.
Barrier Super Plus Fly Repellent This oil-based spray contains only natural, non-toxic ingredients that have all been harvested from sustainable sources. It has been proven effective against flies, midges, bots, horseflies, house, stable, and black flies. It also offers soothing relief to midge bites and can be applied even to pink and exposed areas, stopping the need to rub. “In the summer we swear by this product by Barrier Animal Healthcare. I find this is the most effective all over body spray and I particularly like that it contains the added avocado coat conditioning treatment. It’s ideal for use at home and shows.” - Olivia Catton Eventing
Wipes and roll-ons are a great choice for speedy and accurate application, and are perfect for applying to areas that sprays are not suitable for, such as the face. They are also a convenient choice for use at shows and while out and about due to their compact size and mess-free application.
“We primarily use Barrier Super Plus Fly spray with Avocado Coat Conditioner as I prefer the less chemically smell to all the others, and the more pleasant smell doesn’t detract from its effectiveness. I like that you can buy refills, saving a bit on plastic, and the 5 litre refill is great value and means we never run out. The fact that it contains all natural, plant derived, non-toxic ingredients is important to me as Rock is always clipped out in the summer and therefore more sensitive... and it also doesn’t discolour a grey!” - Caroline Ramsay
Protection Duration
NAF Off Citronella Gel
In a lot of instances, the effectiveness of a repellent is dependent on the length of time it protects the horse for. The best fly repellents are long-lasting, saving time and hassle by negating the need for constant reapplication. This
As the name suggests, this gel contains Citronella as the active ingredient, which effectively repels flies, mosquitos, and midges. The gel formula makes it ideal for use as an accurate ‘spot-on’
Creams, lotions, and gels are better for accurate application to a certain area of the body, with creams and lotions being absorbed more easily, and gels providing better treatment for sensitive areas.

disadvantage of oil-based repellents is that they can cause some horse’s skin to burn if they are turned out in the sun after application.

treatment and it can be applied by hand or using a sponge, avoiding the eyes, mouth, and any broken skin. “We use this in combination with the above, Super Plus Fly Spray, as essential face protection. We carefully wipe it around the horses’ faces to keep the flies away from their eyes and nose. This is really effective and doesn’t bother the horses at all when having it applied directly to their face.” - Olivia Catton Eventing
NAF OFF Citronella Spray Again, this fly repellent from NAF utilises the power of citronella oil to keep the bugs at bay, but this time in the form of a spray. This effective and long lasting formula will leave your horse’s coat fresh and smelling amazing! “I have used NAF OFF products for years now and I have been incredibly impressed with the fly spray options that they offer. I personally find that their Citronella Spray is by far the best of their products and keeps the flies away from the horses really well. In fact, I was hacking the other day with a friend of mine and my horse Memo had no flies on him whatsoever, whereas her horse Ray was covered. It is my “can’t live without’’ product for the summer months and I thoroughly recommend it.” - Jessica Colvin Dressage
NAF Off DEET Power This extra powerful, water-based formula provides long-lasting protection from flies using the active ingredients N,N-Diethyl-m-Toluamide (more commonly known as DEET) and Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropionate (or IR3535). DEET is the most common synthetic chemical ingredient used within repellents due to its proven effectiveness, while IR3535 has been found to be just as effective, but with greater effectiveness against black flies and sand flies, as well as a longer duration of protection. “I’d always opt for NAF Off DEET Power. I discovered DEET when one of my new liveries arrived with lice a few years ago and I noticed after having treated with it that the flies stayed away too! The NAF Off DEET Power fly spray is for flies and other bugs, and I’ve always found it effective and economical. You can also buy in larger quantities which is ideal for a yard.” - Cheryl Johns - Livery List 22
Farnam Tri-Tec 14 Fly Repellent Tri-Tec 14 Fly Spray is a water-based formula that claims to provide effective protection against 6 different types of fly, including horse, house, stable, face, horn and deer flies, along with gnats, mosquitos, lice and even deer ticks. The manufacturer states that this fly spray offers up to 14 days protection, which they achieve through the use of a mix of active ingredients (primarily Cypermethrin and Pyrethrins) to make it effective as both a repellent and an insecticide. “Tri-Tec 14 is a brilliant product, it does what it says on the tin! I’ve used it a lot when competing abroad, especially in Saumur, France, where it was so hot, the flies & midges were horrendous! In fact, it was so brilliant I had to loan it out to all of the other competitors! The container is robust and conveniently reusable, and the spray mechanism has a really good trajectory so that you can quickly and economically dust over the horse. I have never had the trigger mechanism break, unlike some other products I’ve used. Although the product states that it is effective for 14 days, I have found it best to apply to the horses at 5-7 day intervals.” - Sarah Williams Dressage
Carr & Day & Martin Flygard Extra Strength With its claim of “extra strength”, this spray-on repellent also utilises the active ingredient DEET, at an optimum level of 20%, for powerful, longlasting protection from midges and all other flying and biting pests. “I have used quite a few of the fly sprays on the market and this is the one I like best. It works well in comparison to most that I have used, and I particularly like that this one also contains added coat conditioners to promote a healthy, shiny coat. The application is very easy; the bottle has a special Equimist spray setting which sprays out a light mist, very quietly and gently, making it ideal for horses who aren’t so confident around spray bottles. Due to the way it’s dispensed, I also find that the bottle lasts longer than most, as it helps to ensure a light, even coverage, rather than creating denser patches like some of the other fly sprays I’ve tried. In some of the more sensitive areas, such as the face, I just apply it to a sponge first.” - Edward Chitty - Equine Tuition
Equine America Fly-Repel Spray This 100% natural spray repellent contains a blend of tea tree oil, castor oil, lavender and cedarwood oil, and provides up to 8 hours of protection against mosquitos, flies, midges and other biting insects, as well as the diseases they carry. The ingredients are also designed to effectively soothe any Horsemart

itchiness and relieve irritation. “I love to use Equine America’s Fly Repel spray on those hot days in the summer! My young mare gets terribly bothered by flies and is uncomfortable in the field and especially in work when they are around. This repellent really helps ease it and allows her to relax in the warm weather!” - Lily Chandler
PFERDEPFLEGE24 Insect Repellent This great German-made fly spray is widely available in the UK, and contains the active ingredient DEET for powerful and long-lasting effect against flies, mosquitos, ticks and many other parasites. This vegan formula also contains aloe vera to help calm and soothe irritated skin. “This is a great product from Germany, but widely available in the UK. I’ve been using this spray on our horses, who live in a moorland field, which has some boggy parts and is close to a stream. We do see a lot of horseflies and even if the horses wear fly sheets, you can find them clinging on to the rug or exposed parts of the horses. I have found the spray to be excellent in terms of how long it lasts (I spray in the morning and it still seems active 7-8 hours later) and its ability to repel most insects. It’s been really good to use when riding and I’ve even sprayed myself when the flies have been bad, which also seems to do the trick! It has a pleasant smell and my sensitive-skinned chestnut mare has had no reaction to it, even on her white socks and pink skin.” - Dr Tracey Cole
Leovet Power Phaser With a powerful formula that has been optimised to ensure it is both gentle on your horse’s skin whilst being highly effective at keeping the flies away, Leovet Power Phaser claims to provide 7 hours of protection from horseflies, ticks and all biting and non-biting flies. This product has been developed using DEET as the active ingredient and promises to stay put and continue to ward off the flies, even when your horse sweats.
recipes too, Leovet Power Phaser has secured the spot as number 1 for me. The biggest reason being that it still works even after the horse has sweated up! I can complete the full cross country phase, pull up with a rather sweaty horse and he’s not immediately covered in flies, even the nasty horse flies! This allows me to give him the right aftercare he needs and check for injuries etc. without having to contend with flies making him irritable too.” - Natalie Alexander - NMA Fitness “Another massive selling point for me is that it also comes in a gel/cream, so I can still apply it safely to the younger, more nervous horses and get some on their heads for the dressage phase… we take no chances, every point counts so you don’t want the distraction of a fly bite on the chin! It even comes with a free sponge!” - Natalie Alexander - NMA Fitness
Nettex Fly Repellent Formulated to be suitable for use on sensitive skin, this DEET based fly spray contains added moisturisers and conditioners to soothe the skin and increase the duration of effectiveness. Nettex repels flies, stable flies and all biting insects, and comes in two variations - Standard and Advanced - to ensure effective protection, whatever the location or conditions. In areas of heavy infestation, the formula may need reapplication throughout the day to achieve the best results. “Having lived in the Scottish Borders, home of the infamous Scottish midge, I discovered early on that you needed a fly spray containing DEET. Working through the repellents available at the local equestrian shop, I found Nettex the most effective and have continued to use it now that we’re down south. Nettex makes two types – Standard and Advanced. Personally, I opt for the Standard as it contains a higher level of DEET, is cheaper than the Advanced, works as well and lasts just as long. I tend to buy the 2 litre refills but find that the bottle being refilled has a limited life and the nozzle tends to go after a couple of refills. The other thing I learnt at the hands of the persistent midge is to apply the fly spray twice a day for best effect and to particularly spray the legs. This seems to reduce any stamping, at least in my two!” - Alison Lincoln So there we have it, our top fly repellent recommendations based on tried and tested rider reviews. We know it can be frustrating trying to find what works best for you and your horse, but hopefully this has helped you narrow down the options a bit and given you hope in your fight against the flies!

FOCUS ON THE DETAIL
FOCUS ON THE DETAIL TO SEE YOUR HORSE-RIDER PARTNERSHIP FLOURISH! By Natalie Alexander
Let’s talk about cars for a second… and not just any cars; I’m talking Formula 1 racing cars. Why? Just bare with me here… I think it’s safe to say, unless you are a fan of Formula 1 and follow the sport closely, you could say all the cars look exactly the same and do the same job; they all drive super fast round a track for hours on end, right? At the end of the day they are just machines. Yet each formula 1 team has a highly trained pit crew, a team that works on finding the best tyres and the best temperature those tyres perform at, fuel experts to make the car quicker and more efficient, mechanics ensuring the engine is functioning to its best, geniuses behind the scenes designing and redesigning the shape and aerodynamics of the vehicle… the list goes on! There are literally thousands of people all working to get that one machine to handle the best, to be quicker and lighter than everybody else’s. All this work and hundreds of millions of pounds spent on shaving what comes down to just 0.005 of a second off the lap time to gain a qualifying position. Now, let’s get to my point before I lose you and you check that you are still reading an equestrian blog... All this attention to detail goes into shaving a mere 0.005 seconds off a lap time. It’s a machine but it takes all this work to achieve the slightest improvement. 24
The horses we ride are not machines. So why do we overlook the small details when it comes to improving our horses’ way of going? Yes, we may change his bit, a different saddle pad, a comfort bridle with the headpiece cut away, a fluffy girth… but what about us as riders? We make up 50% of the partnership, yet we don’t focus on the detail when it comes down to ourselves. Details such as our diets, our aches and pains, our fitness levels, our strength and mobility – just like the car, the list is endless. If we can focus on one point at a time, slowly, the whole partnership will flourish. Start with building a strong core. A rider’s core is like a car’s chassis; without it you aren’t going to be able to support the rest of the vehicle, the wheels will be wobbling around and you won’t get from A to B in the most efficient way. Build your core and then you will develop an independent hand; you don’t need your hand to balance yourself anymore, making your horse relax over his top line. A simple way to do this is to start doing a plank twice a day for just 30 seconds and build yourself up over a couple of weeks. The plank is a great exercise as its low impact, so even if you have joint pain you should be able to do a plank. Once you can hold the standard plank for a minute, increase Horsemart

the difficulty by tapping your shoulders or reaching away with the opposite hand and foot; concentrate on keeping your hips level and this will also improve your stability. To see these in action – along with a couple of other variations – and get an idea of what you’re aiming for, you can watch this little example video I uploaded to my Instagram account > @NMA.Fitness. I challenge you, as a rider, to focus on the detail and watch your partnership with your horse improve. Autumn 2020

MICKLEM BRIDLES REVIEW
MICKLEM BRIDLES REVIEW Are They Worth The Money And Do They Really Help? By Georgie Wood
William Micklem is an International Coach and Speaker as well as a Fellow of the British Horse Society. He invented the Micklem Bridle which won the BETA Innovation Award in 2008 and was the first comfort bridle on the market that was designed through looking at the horse’s skull, not just the external shape of the head. William was aware how many traditional bridles sat over sensitive nerves in the face and also across the cheek where the protruding upper molar teeth sit due to the upper jaw being wider than the lower jaw. The Micklem is designed to avoid the sensitive areas and nerve endings in the face, thus making the bridle much more comfortable.
2. Noseband positioning avoids any pressure on the motor and sensory nerves exiting at this point, eliminating the possibility of discomfort and numbness on the lower areas of the head. 3. The unique shape and positioning of the noseband and back straps means they avoid the protruding molar teeth, so sensitive tissue inside the mouth is not damaged. 4. The shaped cheekpiece fits comfortably around the protruding cheekbones, avoiding unnecessary pressure. 5. A shaped, widened and padded headpiece, with no separate uncomfortable narrow noseband, spreads the pressure evenly over a wide area of the poll. You can find out more about William and the reasons behind his design on his website > www.williammicklem.com
1. The noseband sits higher than a dropped noseband, avoiding pressure on the fragile nose bones. The placement of the bottom back strap gives similar functionality to a flash noseband. 32
I started using Micklem Bridles very early on, before they were really known about. I remember having to carry a letter to show the dressage stewards at British Eventing competitions to prove the bridle was dressage legal! The reason we started using a Micklem was because we had a horse that suffered with head shaking and we wanted to make him as comfortable as possible. The Micklem made a marked improvement to his level of comfort and I really liked the minimalist look of the bridle and the fact it sat so still on the horses face, so I started to use it on the other horse I had at the time. MICKLEM BRIDLES REVIEW Horsemart
In 2013 I was lucky enough to be sent two Micklem Bridles directly from William Micklem after approaching him for support. His depth and variety of knowledge is just incredible and it was great to find out more about the product from the designer. He was also very generous with his time and gave me lots of feedback through videos to help improve my position and balance in the saddle. Since then I have never wanted to use another bridle and all my horses go very happily in Micklem Bridles – I have never had a horse who hasn’t been as good if not better in a Micklem than a traditional bridle. The design is so simple and it makes them very easy to use (and clean, which is always a bonus when you’ve got 4 bridles to clean the day before a show!). Because there’s only one buckle on each side of the headpiece that can be used to adjust the height of the noseband, and a separate strap that buckles the bit onto the bridle to adjust the height of the bit, the fit of the bridle itself is so much more adjustable. The only problem is that they are not suitable for bits that require a short cheek piece such as a Gag, as unfortunately you can’t get the bit high enough in the horse’s mouth without affecting the fit of the noseband. The only time I haven’t put a horse straight into a Micklem is if I’ve got the horse to sell because, surprisingly, there are still people that think Micklems are only used if the horse has a ‘problem’ such as a contact issue. However, both times I’ve had horses in to sell that I have started in a traditional bridle, I have ended up swapping to the Micklem after a Autumn 2020
couple of weeks because they are so much more settled in them. Florence, a chestnut mare who joined the team last year, started off in a Grackle but she was a bit sensitive to put the bit in and didn’t like the noseband being done up. So I swapped her to the Micklem and, although I still have to be careful not to rush when putting the bridle on, she is so much happier to take the bit. I still have the original Micklem Bridles that I got given at the beginning of 2013! Coco’s is still as good as new and the leather on Lily’s is brilliant; I have just had to replace one of the nylon loops that connects the ‘drop’ part of the noseband, as I use the bit clips on her so it puts more pressure on that specific part of the bridle. I have since got 3 more Micklem bridles and they all hold their quality really well. I know the bridles were criticised early on for the leather quality but it is not a problem I have ever had. I think they are great value for money and still significantly cheaper than a lot of the newer ‘comfort bridles’. What William is most pleased about is that his design has led to a change in attitude towards the importance of the bridle and how it affects the horses comfort. He said he doesn’t mind that there are similar designs or that research has gone into other options as the reason he did it was to improve the horse’s comfort and I think it is safe to say he has done that.
