HICKSTEAD HORSES FOR SALE
The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead is set for an extra special year, as 2020 marks 60 years since the showground first opened. After the very first Hickstead events were held in 1960, it quickly grew to become one of the best-known showjumping venues in the world. The first Hickstead Derby was held a year later in 1961, meaning next summer will also see the running of the 60thAl Shira’aa Derby, which is held on the Sunday afternoon of the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting (25-28 June). Expect an extra special year of celebrations as we look back over the remarkable history of the All England Jumping Course and our most iconic class. Our 60thcelebrations will continue during the Longines Royal International Horse Show (21-26 July). This five-star event boasts an array of thrilling showjumping, including the Longines BHS King George V Gold Cup, the Science Supplements BHS Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the BEMER Speed Classic and, of course, the international team competition - the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ of Great Britain. This year, Hickstead forms the final leg of the series, making it even more exciting as the teams battle it out to stay in Division One and land a place at the Final in Barcelona. 8

HORSES PRACTITIONERS FOR SALE ANIMAL
Becoming a McTimoney Animal Practitioner If you’ve always dreamt of a career working alongside animals, then becoming a McTimoney Animal Practitioner could be the route for you. The McTimoney Approach is a non-invasive, holistic treatment which works to realign and balance animals’ musculoskeletal systems in order to restore health and movement, soundness and overall performance. If variation, flexibility of working hours and self-management are important to you, then this is a career worth considering. McTimoney Animal Practitioners all have a common goal; to provide comfort and increase range of movement in order to help their animal clients. Motivation comes from seeing improvements in clients who have been suffering from various symptoms such as muscle tightness, spinal stiffness, lameness or reduced ability to move normally. The key to success in the McTimoney treatment is understanding the importance of a symmetrical spine and level pelvis. If the skeletal structure is asymmetric, then the horse or dog simply cannot move in the same way on both sides, resulting in symptoms such as dragging of toes, less engagement of affected limbs, changes in posture and overall comfort. Whilst soft tissue techniques can alleviate some discomfort, if the skeletal structure remains unbalanced then the muscular system will compensate again over time so the McTimoney technique is vital in providing a long-term successful outcome. Every case is different, and this variation makes every client fascinating to work with. 14
McTimoney Animal Practitioners always work with veterinary permission and are called upon to treat animals with a wide variety of conditions, sometimes where other conventional treatment has not been effective. Patients are often treated following injuries sustained from falls, collisions or tweaks but problems such as excess weight, conformation defects, incorrect foot or rider balance and poor saddle fitting are also common culprits. With this in mind, it is not only a hugely varied role, but an extremely rewarding one. “A huge motivation for me is seeing my clients’ horses and dogs return from injury with better results than the prognosis gave them, through careful rehabilitative exercises and treatment plans” says Nikki Routledge, a McTimoney Animal Practitioner of sixteen years. “When you see them back out competing successfully, it’s a really special feeling”. “Whilst most of my clients are horse owners – reflecting the development of complementary therapy in the equine industry over the last 25 years – I have also been asked to treat cats, sheep, goats, cows, and even a bull, so you never know what is coming up!” Having developed the approach in the 1950s, John McTimoney modified his human chiropractic technique to be applied specifically upon animals. Today, the McTimoney MSc in Animal Manipulation is the only validated course in Europe in teaching techniques for adjusting animals, training students to the highest
practitioner level. Awarded by BPP University London, the programme is designed either for students who already have training in a hands-on therapy (this may include a trained chiropractor, physiotherapist, osteopath or any other fully qualified and suitably experienced practitioner), for those with a BSc degree in Equine or Animal Science or for those who are a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Students from a non-manipulative background will be expected to complete the Graduate Certificate in Animal Therapy, whilst those who do not have formal training may submit a portfolio of certified experience for consideration. Animal Practitioners must have completed the minimum three-year post-graduate training course – including training to Level 7 in Animal Manipulations at the McTimoney College – and must have demonstrated a high level of competency to pass the stringent exams required. This course is designed to allow students to study alongside their current career path and is available to those with a prior degree in related sciences. Upon completion, graduates are fully qualified to offer animals manipulative therapy based on the original McTimoney technique. A good dose of self-discipline to organise appointments and communicate with clients is required, and self-motivation is necessary, but support is always on hand from fellow practitioners, either through the McTimoney Animal Association (MAA) or through local contact Horsemart
HORSES PRACTITIONERS FOR SALE ANIMAL Horsemart Horsemart with practitioners. Once qualified, practitioners are encouraged to join the MAA Membership professional body. All members are fully insured, and this affiliation also gives members key support throughout their careers and professional development opportunities. Practitioners are required to maintain their level of expertise by undertaking minimum of 25 hours CPD (continuing professional development) per year or 75 hours over a three-year span as per the veterinary profession. Ongoing support is provided through the MAA members groups, via CPD days and a dedicated CPD co-ordinator keeps members posted on all CPD events. “I am constantly developing and evolving as a professional and I never stop learning which gives you a huge sense of self-worth” adds Lucy Goodright, a qualified McTimoney Animal Practitioner for eight years. “Since my McTimoney journey began I have met so many different animals and people and made many friends, it is a part of who I am.” All McTimoney Animal Practitioners are registered with the McTimoney Animal Association. To find your local practitioner go to www.mctimoneyanimal.co.uk or follow us on Facebook @ McTimoneyAnimalAssociation. EVENTING SEASON HORSES FOR SALE
PLANNING YOUR
SPRING FITNESS REGIME Patrick Delaney Lecturer in Equestrian Studies, Hadlow College Coming into spring, it’s important to make sure your horse is fit enough for the good weather and warm light evenings that are coming. Many horses are let down and roughed off over winter, or ridden less due to bad weather, flooded schools and poor condition bridle paths. Fittening the horse should occur gradually over a period of time to allow the horse’s 18
body to adjust. This is not only to ensure the horse is fit enough for the extra workload, but a steady programme will also help to prevent injuries whilst the horse’s body is in soft condition. A pulled tendon or sore muscles at this time of year can take lengthy time to recover from, so it is better to start slowly early on than risk problems.
Regardless of the state of fitness, care should be taken of the horse’s general health anyway. Vaccinations should be up to date, the teeth should have regular checks, shoeing or trimming will have continued over the winter months and the horse should still have been wormed if appropriate. From here on, your fittening plan will very much depend on your horse as an individual. It is worth noting that young horses or those who have not been fit before will take longer to get fit. Their muscles and the rest of their body and metabolism are not use to it. Conversely with a horse in their prime, even after time off, their body will ‘remember’ to a certain extent their previous levels of fitness. It is also worth remembering that older horses and veteran horses will take longer to get fit, as their bodies will not work as efficiently as younger horse, and they may also be more prone to injuries or be more likely to have pre-existing injuries that can affect their training. Most forms of injury will increase the length of time it will take to get the horse fit, and weeks of slow, steady conditioning are often needed to prevent further potential injuries and to aid rehabilitation. Horsemart
EVENTING SEASON HORSES FOR SALE Horsemart Horsemart
Getting the horse fit will also depend on your starting point. If your horse has been turned out a lot, there is more opportunity for the horse to keep itself fit than one that has been stabled most of winter. Breed can also make a difference; as Thoroughbred types tend to have a naturally higher resting level of fitness than most cob breeds. The actual fitness programme needs to be tailored according to the horse, but can generally be broken down into 3 sections. The first section is slow work, which conditions and prepares the horse’s joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles. The second section is working on the basic fitness of the horse, whilst developing stamina and strength. The third section leads to the faster work, which will also prepare horses for sponsored rides, hunter trials and cross-country type events. Below is a sample plan for a horse that has been ridden lightly over the winter months, for a rider looking to compete at unaffiliated, riding club and entry level affiliated competitions over the summer period. This is based around your horse having regular turn out, and having one day off a week.
Week 1
Start with around 15-20mins roadwork in walk each day
Week 2
Gradually increase the roadwork to 30-40mins per day, watch out for signs of tiredness early on
Week 3
Begin to increase the roadwork to 60mins per day, preferably including some not too steep hills
Week 4
Extend the hacking time to up to 90mins per day. If necessary, this can be in two separate sessions. Start to introduce short periods of trot work on level, suitable ground
Week 5
Start to introduce some slow, gentle schooling in the arena for up to 20-30mins max. Exercise can now be increased to up to 1.52hrs daily, and can include some trotting up gentle hills, but avoid trotting on the roads
Week 6
Schooling time can be increased, and canter can be introduced when out hacking. This should be kept to short sections with opportunities for the horse to fully recover in between, and should preferably be performed on straight lines, and on level suitable ground.
Week 7
The length of time in canter can now be developed, with the inclusion of cantering up gentle hills. The school work can continue, and now is the time to introduce pole work, leading up to small jumps and easy grid work. Again, sessions should be non-strenuous with built in recovery times.
Week 8-9
Continuation of everything you have been doing so far, but faster work can be introduced with stronger canters, and gallops for short periods in hand. For the more serious competitor this is the time to introduce interval training.

HORSES GRASS FOR SALE SPRING
Why spring grass is dangerous for horses and how it can be managed Sugars in spring grass Winter sees most domesticated horses in the Northern Hemisphere being fed dried forage for months on end to make up for the poor (or, in some cases, non-existent grass) in their field during the cold, dark months. But,
22
once the weather starts to warm up and the days lengthen, grass growth can suddenly go mad with the arrival of spring grass. Even though it looks hugely appealing, and historically spring grass was referred to as ‘Dr Green’ for the therapeutic effect it was thought to have on equines, it can
Horsemart
HORSES GRASS FOR SALE SPRING Horsemart Horsemart
present a problem for horse owners. Horse health company Haygain takes a look at why spring grass can be disruptive for both a horse’s digestive system and its metabolism, and what owners can do to mitigate the risks.
Why is spring grass dangerous for horses? Spring grass is high in a type of sugar called fructan, which is present as a by-product of photosynthesis and is used to fuel plant growth. Fructans are non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) that horses can’t digest, and
they boost the energy content of grass enormously. If a horse has been fed dried forage for months on end, the sudden introduction of large amounts NSCs in the horse’s gut can disturb the balance of natural bacteria and release a wave of bacterial toxins called endotoxins. These changes can trigger laminitis in horses, particularly if they are predisposed to the condition due to obesity or suffering from Equine Metabolic Syndrome. The disturbance of the gut bacteria can also trigger colic in horses who are not used to rich, sugary grass.
Is it true that spring grass is most dangerous on frosty mornings? It is - photosynthesis requires light and therefore occurs only during daylight hours, producing non-structural carbohydrates which are then used by the plant during the night time to fuel growth. If the temperature drops below zero during the night after a sunny day, the plant will not be able to utilise the abundance of NSCs it produced during daylight hours, and they will still be present in high concentrations the next morning.
How can you manage a horse’s intake of NSCs? • Introduce spring turnout gradually and carefully monitor your horse’s weight and condition for sudden changes. • If you are limiting turnout to just a few hours, do it early in the morning when fructan levels should be at their lowest (apart from on frosty mornings, as per the point above). On normal, non-frosty days fructan levels will be highest in late afternoon and early evening, so avoid turnout then. Be warned, some equines get savvy to the fact they will only be out for a limited time, stick their heads down and eat incredible amounts of grass in just a few hours! Spring 2020
• Top (cut or mow) your turnout fields so that the spring grass doesn’t grow taller than 6 inches. This helps prevent horses from taking extra-big mouthfuls of grass with each bite. • You could consider a grazing muzzle, but these have been shown to cause uneven tooth wear so may not be the best option for prolonged periods of grazing. • Rotate turnout between different fields if you can. It may seem a little odd, but the grass in overgrazed fields can actually be the most dangerous of all, as it is growing quickly to prevent it being wiped out and thus is repeatedly producing young grasses which contain fructans at a higher concentration. • When horses are stabled, feed hay that has been soaked for at least nine hours and then steamed for one hour to ensure the overall diet is low in NSCs. Soaking hay lowers the NSCs in hay and steaming it afterwards in a Haygain Steamer ensures it is free from bacteria and pathogens that can multiply so quickly when hay is immersed in water. If obesity is an issue for your equine then consider using a slow feeder to ensure their allocated forage takes them as long as possible to eat, therefore preventing them from being without forage for any length of time.
When is it safe to let horses graze normally again? As we move into summer the grass will start to mature and you will see it grow more long thin stems and fewer lush, thick green leaves. This is a sign that that initial mad growth period is coming to an end, and the grass NCS content is returning to normal levels. It is worth staying vigilant to any changes in your horse’s weight and condition, particularly if you know they are prone to laminitis and obesity.

CROSS COUNTRY
CROSS COUNTRY Holding A Straight Line Eventing season is looming which means it’s time to polish up our techniques and combat any underlying issue that you faced last season. A common problem a lot of riders face is holding a straight line while riding cross country. The cross country phase not only becomes bigger as you go up the levels, but the technicality also becomes more difficult. So mastering the foundation is fundamental to ensure you’re bringing those rosettes home this season. 26
So where do you start? If you struggle with accurately holding that line to a fence then we have two great exercises to try. You don’t have to go cross country schooling to practice this, it can all be done at home. Horsemart

HORSES FOR SALE CROSS COUNTRY
Exercise one: Aim;
• Teach your horse to jump across an angle • Taking off and landing on the correct spot • Gain the confidence to jump on an angle or corner
Once confidant with this pop them once again into canter and come down over the poles. Make sure you are doing this exercise on both reins. It’s natural for the horse and you as a rider to find one

rein easier. Try not to only focus on the good rein.
This is a great exercise for both horse and rider.
Now that the horse is on the aid and completely
Start off with two small poles about 90/100cm in length (if you don’t have any just use normal poles), put them on the floor with 3 canter strides between the two poles (20 human strides). Trot over the poles making sure you are looking ahead. You may need to adjust the pole positioning if you
responsive to your movements, you can raise the poles off the floor and make three jumps. Make sure you keep yourself in a good posture with good rein contact to help keep them on a straight line. Top tip: don’t let the horse drift across the line of the fence. Make sure you sit up after the

fence getting them to sit back on their haunches.
At first the horse may find it easier to go around
Depending on how confident both parties are
the poles or might even become ‘wobbly.’ When this happens you need to create a channel with your legs for guidance. This means wrapping your legs around the horse keeping them between leg and hand and up into the contact. This in turn will help guide them over the pole. After a few attempts this will become easier. After mastering this in trot, pop them up into canter and do the same as before, making sure you have them up and in front of you. The most important part of this exercise is to make sure you carry on riding in a straight line after the poles. Time to kick it up a notch. We can now move the poles onto an angle on the floor to bring a technical aspect into the exercise. You can now go back to using normal length poles if easier. Start off with one horse stride between each pole (8 human strides). Depending on how experienced the horse is, most horses will want to follow the angle of the poles rather than going over them at an angle. You will have to be very reactive to prevent the ‘wobble’ feeling from the horse. Ride it like nothing has changed keeping the horse between leg and hand and continue to look forward to the next pole.
28
feeling, pop the horse back into the canter. It’s so important to remember to let the fence come to you. Keep the horse responsive and look down to the end of the school whilst wrapping your legs around the horse to keep them straight and in contact. Make sure this is done on both reins and only build the fence size up when you are both completely confident. Build the middle fence like the diagram and ride to the middle point of the cross. This gives you a point to aim for. As soon as you land you want them on your aids and sitting back waiting for the next fence. Points to be aware of: • Be reactive, don’t let the horse drift • Look at a point at the end of the school and make sure you ride to it • Ride in a straight line after the poles or fence every time • Beware of losing balance • Horse falling onto shoulder in between fences • Always praise when it has gone well
Horsemart
HORSESCOUNTRY FOR SALE CROSS Another problem you may face is holding your line to a fence but then the horse drifts to the left or right on takeoff. This is a great exercise to try with young horses or horses that drift when coming to a fence.
Aim;
• Teach your horse to jump in the middle of a fence • Taking off and landing on the correct spot • Confidence to jump on an angle or corner • Teaching the horse to snap up in front Start off with the fence on an angle with two canter poles in front of the fence. The canter poles are there to help keep the horse up in front of you and keep them more in between leg and hand. A fence is easier to meet on an angle but also makes it easier for the horses to fall out through their shoulder, hence drifting to the left or right. Start with a small fence with two jumping poles on an angle to create a triangle shape. The smaller the point of the triangle the more the horse will snap up, preventing them from drifting left or right over the fence. Just like the last exercise, make sure you ride in a straight line afterward. You can build this up over a course of fences or down a guide. If you are riding a young horse make sure the point of the triangle is further apart. It can be quite daunting and they may get confused. Top tip: Make sure your hands are up about 15cm from the horse’s wither. Don’t let your hands sit in your lap. This will also make it easier to keep the horse on your aids. Once you feel confident remove the poles but change nothing in your riding. Let the fence come to you and always look ahead to your next fence while keeping the contact. Holding a straight line on a cross country course all comes from the foundation built in the beginning at home. Build it up slowly and the rest will follow. Always make sure you have a good approach and a great canter. Coming to a fence on a lackluster canter is asking for trouble. Always make sure your horse is forward and in front of you. If you struggle with the canter then you may benefit from lots of pole work exercises to ensure the horse is working from behind.

EVENTING SEASON Horsemart Horsemart
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EVENTING SEASON As an event rider, it’s hard to know how best to prepare for the Eventing season. Rachael tells us how she prepares herself and her horse, Bailey, and runs through her training plan for each discipline, including top tips for increasing fitness levels and getting organised before the event.
Fitness Training There are many areas I look at when preparing for the Eventing season. The key thing for all eventers is ensuring that the horse is fit and ready for the event, and is fully trained and working well in all 3 disciplines. So, the time has come to start ensuring Bailey is fit enough for any course we go on; some are flat with more speed areas, and some have a lot of hills. So his fitness for the next event season is very important. Throughout winter our training has not stopped (no rest for the wicked!) as we were mainly focusing on the dreaded, boring schooling and flatwork Spring 2020
to improve our Dressage score, getting him nice and supple and more established than last season. We all know, to have a decent jump you need the basics and the groundwork backing you up. We also attended several dressage competitions to help battle my fear of the Dressage test, and I feel I have improved rapidly already. Although this work may seem boring if you’re not a Dressage rider and love to jump, it’s a key factor and worth putting in the effort. I also used this as an opportunity to become more comfortable riding in my Dressage saddle, as well as forever improving my position. Now let’s talk about something a bit more interesting, that without a doubt we will all find more exciting than the Dressage phase... the jumping! Some people aren’t too keen on the Showjumping phase either, and for them it’s all about Cross Country, but this is my favourite bit. I start introducing jumping into our training at around 9 weeks before
the season starts. So this year we already had a jump in January, nothing stressful, just something nice and simple to bring him back into it. I could tell he was excited to be jumping again, which was a great feeling to know he loves it too. Of course I start off slow and focus on increasing the height and complexity over time. So we focus on our technique lines, starting off very simple, keeping the jumps on the long and short lines, then gradually getting more and more technical with different lines, angles and strides. The good thing about the school is that it’s easy to keep changing the jumps to make tighter turns and more angled jumps, as well as making more technically challenging lines in a safe environment. This gets you ready to start introducing the Cross Country. When I start jumping, I initially do it once every other week, and then around 3-4 weeks before the season starts I will increase this to once a week, provided I’m not going Cross Country during that week. 33
EVENTING SEASON
Some golden rules for increasing fitness: • Always do your fast work on the best ground available but try to vary the surface (we all know what it’s like with typical British weather, you may turn up to an event and the ground be completely rock solid, or the opposite, wet and soft - so it’s always best your horse is trained and ready for all ground conditions). • Hill work will be more effective at improving stamina and aerobic fitness. • Canter work every 4th day if possible (you don’t want to overdo it and cause a injury, nor do you want to do too little and not be fit for the event, so each horse will vary). I start to introduce Cross Country at around 6 weeks before, as I don’t get as much time to go out and fit this training in, so I begin as early as possible when venues start reopening their courses after the winter. To start off with I keep everything slow and small to get Bailey use to it all again, showing him the jumps by trotting into them so he isn’t jumping through his adrenaline, which helps build his confidence with the jumps. The next time we go I’ll ask more from him, increasing the height, but not so much the speed. By the last visit before our event, I’ll warm up over a few jumps and then put together a nice course to run through as if we were at the event, but by this time he should have honed his skill as well as his fitness. I start the fitness side of training at around 5 weeks before the event. I start increasing the fast work to ensure he’s in the best health, not dehydrated and well balanced. The main fitness training I do is interval training, alternating between short 34
and long, fast and slow, as this is a very effective way of getting them fit for short format, although it will vary from horse to horse. He’s had a few big canters and gallops when we’ve hack out throughout the year, so this won’t be too much of a shock to his system. With that in mind, I will then gradually increase the speed and length, fluctuating the speed of the gallop when we do a longer stretch. This is an example of the last couple of fitness sessions we would do before the event; 1. Gallop session = 3 gallops for 2 mins with a 1 min trot in between 2. Slow session = 3 steady canters for 2 mins with a 1 min trot in between 3. Gallop session = 4 gallops for 2 mins with a 1 min trot in between 4. Slow session = 3 steady canters for 3 mins with a 1 min trot in between (with a hill)
• Try to go with someone experienced at a higher level to get a feel for the speed (when it comes to open runs of the XC course, it is always helpful to have an actual feel for the speed, rather than relying on a watch. I remember when I used to go round XC as if I was in the Showjumping ring, but once I had that feeling of the correct speed it was a real gamechanger for us). • Build up with feel and try to recognise a pattern of recovery. • Always try to vary the types of work you’re doing in training to establish a good balance (horses, just like us, can get fed up if they’re always just jumping or schooling. They can become sour, so make sure you keep every day different to the day before).
Pre-Event Checklist Preparing for the season also encompasses lots of other areas that might easily be overlooked. I also need to ensure that I, as the Rider, am ready, Horsemart
EVENTING SEASON Horsemart Horsemart
and that all of our gear is also fit for purpose and ready to go. The last thing you’d want is to run out of breath and turn blue in the face half way round the course as you’re super unfit! Or realise the day before an event that you’ve misplaced an item, or that something doesn’t work, or even have something break on the day! So here’s my checklist to ensure we’re prepared for the season; • All rider wear is in good condition and, most importantly, fits well • All horse tack is in good condition with no splits or tears • All accessories are in working order and together in one place (e.g. stopwatch, bib holder, first aid arm band, hair nets etc) • Horse is up to date with all vaccinations, farrier, physio and dentist • Saddle has been checked within the last 6/8 months • Training plan sorted for the horse • Training plan sorted for the rider
• Horse’s Passport is ready
Before I go to the event, if the venue is open to the public for Cross country schooling, I like to get a quick last minute session in, as I find this really helps ease my nerves and gets Bailey use to the style of fences the venue holds. It also gives me an idea of the venue, especially if I’ve not been there before, plus it’s always nice to have done the drive beforehand so you know exactly where you’re going and where to find the entrance.
• Pencil-in the event I plan on attending
A few days before the event I also give all my tack and boots a nice strip
• Transport is sorted – for me, this would be ensuring my trailer and truck have been serviced and had a clean health inspection completed • Travel equipment is together (travel boots/rugs/buckets/sponges etc) • Plaiting and grooming equipment is all topped up
Spring 2020
clean, and Bailey gets a hot cloth wipe along with a general mane and tail tidy. This is also when I get all of my stuff together in one place, ready to load up. On the day of the event I get up extra early to plait up and give him a deep groom, as he’s guaranteed to lay in poo and have stains all over him! I make sure I leave earlier than I actually need to so that I don’t feel rushed when I get to the venue, and it gives me plenty of time to settle in.

Now that February has left us, the feeling of spring is in the air. Here is your guide on surviving the spring with your four-legged friend.
5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 36
Hold your horses, this time of year they will tend to turn their hand towards dressage type moves as you make your way to an from the field. Check that your horse riding gear is still safe by checking the current safety standards Purchase a face mask as your horse is about to shed its coat Get out your fly rugs, nose shields and any other accessories to make sure that all are still in good working order and that your horse will be comfortable If your horse suffers from Sweet Itch, now is the time to help prevent them from suffering Make sure you don’t get stuck in bogs as winter mud starts to dry up and become like cement Dig out a deep litter bed, it is very hygienic for your horse It is also time to revisit your worming programme Check your horse’s passport and check when vaccinations are due A spring health check is a great idea, horses can change throughout the year due to their change in activity Strengthen your bond with your horse by spending time with them. ADVERTORIAL
IT’S ALL IN THE LEGS We often wonder if we have the right supplement for our animals. There seems to be a plethora of products claiming to be the panacea for equine joint problems. In reality there is no miracle formulations but there are tried and tested ingredients which will go a long way to supporting joint care by promoting flexibility, elasticity, and cushioning of connective tissue. With age or injury cartilage becomes more fragile. Research has found that the synergistic effects of glucosamine combined with chondroitin and MSM is unrivalled when it comes to joint support without the use of prescribed veterinary treatment.
Spring 2020
Premium supplements contain: • MSM ( Methyl Sulphonyl Methane) Found in all connective tissue in the body. helps maintain agility and soundness. • Chondroitin is present in all cartilage and connective tissue, it attracts synovial fluid to the joint which is required for lubrication. • Glucosamine supports the health of synovial fluid to the joint as well as cartilage.
Older horses can benefit from routine administration of a combination supplement of Glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM and in all probability should continue the rest of their lives. Younger horses recovering from injury can probably discontinue the use of a supplement after 3 to 4 months. Triflex contains recommended amounts of Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM Triflex contains only HUMAN GRADE ACTIVE INGREDINTS AND NO SUGARS or FILLERS Money back guarantee if you are not 100% pleased

HORSE RACING
SHOULD YOUNG PEOPLE GET INTO HORSE RACING? By Samantha Martin For any readers who don’t know me, I’m a fifteen-year-old girl who writes articles about all aspects of the sport I love – horse racing. In the vast majority of conversations I’ve had with fellow fans, trainers, jockeys and TV presenters, one issue is frequently raised: “We need more young people in horse racing.” No one can dispute that young people are the future any sport. I’m a writer for a website called Rein It In Racing. Our content is purely by young people and the site was created because of the lack of representation of young people in horse racing media. Like the rest of the team, I love the sport - horse racing is my biggest passion; I own a share in a racehorse and spend my Fridays nights previewing races and studying form. However, when I tell people I love horse racing, they look at me like I have just told them that I enjoy badger-bating 44
and the misuse of Class A drugs! On one occasion, someone even asked my parents why they would let me be a horse racing fan! Interacting with the horse racing community has vastly improved my ability to explain my opinions with confidence, taught me to stand up for myself in the face of hate as well as learn from my mistakes and lapses in judgement. It has nurtured a passion and respect for the greatest creatures on earth which, I’m sure, will last me the rest of my life. Unfortunately, interest in horse racing seems to be on the decline. It has been reported that, in 2015, 6.13 million people went to a UK race meeting but, in 2019, this reduced to 5.62 million. The figures are steadily decreasing as the years go by and that can’t be a good thing. I’m sure we’ve all been
in the situation where we’ve travelled through a built up area and someone (usually older) remarks wistfully, “I remember when all of this was fields”. I don’t want to be driving through Kempton or Warwick or Chester and say to someone, “I remember when this was a racecourse…”. If we can understand why this is happening, we can work out ways to attract more young blood into racing and not allow it to stagnate. In this article, I’m going to flip the earlier statement on its head and ask the question – Should Young People Get Into Horse Racing? Stereotypes play a large part in the perception of the sport. Racing’s stereotype appears to be that all racing fans are retired, ruddy-faced men with a flat cap on their head, a cigar in one hand, a glass of whiskey Horsemart
HORSE RACING Horsemart
in the other and a wad of cash in their inside pocket. That was probably the case in the 1900s but, fortunately, things couldn’t be more different now. Racing is a sport that is enjoyed by both genders and, unlike some other sports, men and women compete on a level playing field. The recent successes of Rachel Blackmore and Hollie Doyle cannot fail to inspire young girls. The stereotype of racecourses strikes me as being that they are no place for children, with drinking, smoking and gambling all taking place in one confined area. If done responsibly, there should be no more drinking and smoking than outside your local on a Saturday night. Take Warwick racecourse as an example: the betting ‘ring’ is close to the main entrance where the majority of drinking occurs, but, if you keep walking, the crowds Spring 2020
thin when you get closer to the parade ring. Here, it’s quieter and more childfriendly – the perfect spot to watch the horses. Debbie Matthews has done an excellent job helping to make many courses around England accessible to people living with anxiety, dementia, autism, loneliness and invisible illnesses through the ‘Go Racing Green’ project. Nottingham, Chester, Newbury and Salisbury all support the initiative. Newbury is particularly good for introducing children to racing. At the Ladbrokes Trophy meeting, they had lots of interesting tasks for children to undertake to learn about the life of racehorses. Many courses also have ‘Family Days’. These are where there are children’s activities, such as bouncy castles and fairground rides, on course. What these lack, in my opinion, is a connection to horse racing that would
nurture an interest in the children. Normally, adult ticket costs anything from £16-£25, under 18s nearly always GO FREE. This represents a great value day out that isn’t nearly publicised enough! Another way to involve children and families would be to target schools in the local area with leaflets advertising ‘a day at the races’. A positive experience would encourage people to come back year after year. The work of ‘Racing To Schools’ brings racing to the classroom and is an incredible initiative. An idea on how to educate racegoers is to introduce information boards surrounding the parade ring, like in a museum. This would help visitors understand why horses wear certain equipment; what the form means; the differences between Handicap and Stakes races and the way gambling odds work, for example. This 45
HORSE RACING
information is hard to access at the racecourse – I can’t understand why! This would make a day at the races not just a good time but an opportunity to learn more about this great sport. Cutting through the jargon would definitely help draw people in. Sadly, much of the mainstream press attention racing recieves is negative – normally if a fatality occurs or a gambling horror story, as I will mention later on. I’m a bit biased but I don’t believe horse racing is cruel. From my experience, if a horse doesn’t want to race, or do anything for that matter – they won’t! No one can persuade them otherwise once they’re mind is made up. Fatalities are what racing is infamous for. Take the Grand National for example – a unique test over four miles and two furlongs with fences only the brave can jump. This race is by far the most famous horse race in the world and it is the one that people naturally base their opinions on. Last year, Up For Review got brought down at the first and, devastatingly, had to be put to sleep. There is constantly a risk of a life-ending injury with horses, regardless of whether they’re a top level racehorse or the family pony. Considering their size, horses are so delicate. A study showed that it is 62% more likely for a horse to be fatally injured in the field in comparison to a 30% chance when ridden. This danger is a contributing factor to adults not wanting young people to be involved in horse racing.
46
Another contributing factor is gambling. Gambling has been intertwined with racing for years and betting shops sponsor many big races, for example the Ladbrokes Trophy and Betfair Hurdle. Nowadays, you can bet on pretty much anything – from the name of a royal baby to cheese rolling contests. I was shocked at the quantity of sports you could gamble on through the Oddschecker website. People gamble to different extents – from solely at the Grand National, to when they go racing, to most days, to multiple times a day without fail. Aggressive advertising campaigns blasted around racing-related websites and TV channels make it appear that you are missing out and won’t enjoy the race as much if you don’t have money staked on the outcome but these always end in “Be Gamble Aware” or “Bet Responsibly”. To me, this gives mixed messages. In the UK, it is estimated that around 350,000 people suffer from gambling addictions. However, NHS statistics show that only five percent of people seek help and only one percent actually receive it. My heart goes out to anyone who suffers with a gambling problem and I encourage them to seek out help and advice from services like www.gamcare.org.uk and www.gamblingaware.org. Brothers Fred and Peter Done, who founded Betfred were in the news lately as they also own a company called Health Assured, which has
contracts with the NHS and councils providing services to gambling addicts. Seems like they have the best of both worlds. In response to this, newspapers jumped on the story regarding the ways bookmakers entice and take advantage of vulnerable gamblers. In one report, in the Daily Mail, a man was put into a ‘VIP Club’, where they used free tickets to keep him on-side. In the end, his addiction, which his family claimed the betting site fueled, developed into a ‘psychiatric disorder’ which caused him to steal money and culminated in a three year prison sentence. This is a rare, extreme case and isn’t directly connected with racing, yet rubs off badly on the sport. Because of this, I can understand why someone would be wary of introducing a young person into horse racing as anyone with an addictive personality is instantly at risk of developing a problem. In my opinion, it is the responsibility of parents/carers and schools to educate young people about the repercussions of gambling irresponsibly. At my school, we’re taught about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and how to manage money, but gambling is not even mentioned. Surely it is time for this to be added to the curriculum? So far, I’ve mentioned the features of horse racing that the general public seem to dislike but horse racing has so many wonderful qualities. One excellent thing about racing is how welcoming it is to anyone and everyone. Regardless of your age, gender or sexuality, everyone is included. There are also so many careers on offer too - not just the obvious ones like stable staff or jockeys – but Racing Secretaries, Veterinary Welfare Officers, Handicappers, Stipendiary Stewards etc. For anyone interested in a career in racing, the Careers In Racing website www.careersinracing.com is an
HORSE RACING Horsemart
invaluable source of information. Also, the British Racing School gives young people with dreams of working in the industry the perfect starting point from their Newmarket base. In conclusion, the best thing about racing – hands down – is the horses. For me, there’s nothing more wonderful than a Thoroughbred racehorse in full flight. Horse racing showcases these animals at their very best - their strength, agility, willingness, to name just a few characteristics. The bond between horse and rider, galloping at 40 miles per hour towards huge fences, can’t be underestimated. The trust shown reflects just why these animals are so loved all around the world.
The stories are also what makes horse racing so special. Nicky Henderson’s star two mile chaser Sprinter Sacre was in the prime of his career when it was discovered that he had a heart problem. With perseverance, from equine and human alike, Sprinter Sacre bounced back and won the Champion Chase. Or how about Lady Buttons? The Philip Kirby team have nurtured this mare since she was a foal and, in doing so, captured the heart of the racing public. Now, she’s won fifteen of her thirty-two starts, including five listed races and a Grade Two. It would be a crime not to mention Andrew Gemmell! Blind from birth, he’s a passionate racing fan and he has been a key player, as the owner, in the Paisley Park story. This gelding
shot into the limelight when he won at the Cheltenham Festival in the Stayers Hurdle and he looks primed for a second win in the race. So, should young people get into horse racing? From my experience – yes, a million times yes! I have sat on the edge of my seat, transfixed by the thrilling action before me; seen the racehorses up close; met some incredible people and had some wonderful opportunities thanks to racing, all the while surrounding by warm, welcoming, like-minded people. I’m extremely proud to be part of this sport and I hope that more young people will fall in love with it so horse racing doesn’t just survive but thrives in the future.
