From the Publisher The Oct. 30-31 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland promises to be quite a spectacle. If the fields hold – fingers crossed – we expect to see the final start of American Pharoah as the Triple Crown winner races off into the sunset. The majesty of Keeneland’s fall splendor will be on full display. No track comes close to weaving a program equal parts tradition and innovation than the Lexington oval. If you had to pick one spot on the map, and one racetrack in specific, where folks truly care about horse racing, you’d be hard-pressed to find one better. If you find yourself in fandom rooting on American Pharoah or Beholder, you won’t be alone. Nor will you be ostracized on a day like this to take a swing at price horses to upset the favorites. Whereas the Triple Crown often gets overridden by the desire to be cool and popular, the Breeders’ Cup remains true to most as a horseplayers’ haven. No one will snarl if you wave a $50 winning ticket on an upset in the Classic. Go for it! -JP

Also, perhaps the make, eventually it most unfulfilling occupation in the universe. will all make sense. Takes a Whip(ing) and Keeps on Ticking You’ve got to hand it to jockey Angel Castillo. If you don’t, he’ll probably just reach over and take it from you anyway! Castillo, a jockey riding at Parx Casino and Racing located outside Philadelphia, PA, recently made headlines when he reached over in mid-stretch of a race to confiscate fellow rider Pierre Hernandez Ortega’s whip. Castillo, who had misplaced his own stick earlier in the race when his mount Interchange and Hernandez Ortega’s ride Distant Thoughts had come together, apparently felt entitled to help himself to Ortega’s bat.

“The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away,” Castillo may or may not have said. Following the theft, Interchange, under Castillo’s relentless rent-awhip barrage, finished second at odds of 7/2. The race favorite, Distant Thoughts, was out of the money, but gratefully unscathed. Mid-race whip exchanges are rare, but not unprecedented and usually result in punishment to the thieving party. Not in this case. Parx stews let the results stand and never even posted the ‘inquiry’ sign! Apparently and incredibly, the pilfer of a whip during a race technically is not a violation of any Pennsylvania racing statute. Teaser supposes it’s kind of like how in areas of Florida you can

shoot and kill someone and still be found not guilty of a crime.

to fix the outcome of the fifth race at Parx on May 12, 2015.”

Castillo and Hernandez Ortega quickly are becoming the Abbott and Costello of Parx Casino and Racing. Earlier this year, an electric device was found in the jocks room at Parx. Originally, Castillo was identified as the buzzer’s rightful owner and was ordered off his mounts by the stews midway through the May 12 Parx program. Weeks later after the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission (aka the Keystone Cops) had concluded an investigation, Hernandez Ortega was officially proclaimed as the guilty party.

Maybe Castillo stole Hernandez Ortega’s whip in retaliation for the latter pocketing his buzzer?

According to an official ruling on the matter, “Based upon the uncontroverted evidence presented at the stewards’ hearing, Mr. Hernandez Ortega is found to be in violation of the commission’s regulation (regarding prohibited items). Mr. Hernandez Ortega’s possession of the device and subsequent deceptive actions to conceal the possession are equivalent to an attempt

Anyway, Teaser can’t wait until Castillo and Hernandez Ortega make it official and are booked as the headline comedy act in the Parx Casino main showroom. Their “Who’s on First” routine is sure to bring down the ‘house that Smarty built.’

Not bad coin, right? The kicker is that the thought needs to be a really good one about how to improve the horse racing industry. That’s right up your alley, no? You got this one. Easy, peasy. For years you’ve subjected track, OTB and local pub buddies to rants and raves about how you could revolutionize the sport if only you had the chance. Well, opportunity’s finally come a knockin.’ Pip’s got a

headache and we need a first baseman. Grab your mitt, Mr. Gerhrig. There’s a juicy $10K waiting for you to share your Einstein with the rest of the racing world. Teaser knows for a fact that you’ve gone on and on for years, like a broken record (daddy, what’s a record?), to your wife or hubby about what racing ‘needs to do’ to join mainstream American sports. Teaser will bet dollars to donuts the significant other probably can recite your racing revival recipe verbatim. The Innovators’ Circle, organized in conjunction with the program’s gaming partners Hai Ng and Vin Narayanan, is a first-pitch competition open to anyone with an “idea, product, or business that has the potential to revolutionize” the industry. Finalists will have space in the exhibit area at the Global Symposium on Racing &

Gaming and will make a 10-minute pitch to a panel of judges. “We’ve seen this type of pitch competition produce results in other industries,” RTIP director Doug Reed said in a press release. “By soliciting ideas from a diverse group, there are no limits to what talented people can accomplish.” As usual, fine print is involved. For example, you have to be 18 to enter or you must have your parent’s permission; you have to be present at the Symposium to win; and “at all times, entrants are expected to behave respectfully to all other contestants, sponsors, judges, volunteers, and audience members.” The latter provision excludes Teaser, but if you’re good with all that, go for it! Through live chats, videos and radio simulcasts, the best in the industry have shared their expertise free with horseplayers. In each issue of Horse Player NOW Magazine, we go “Back to Night School” with a look at some of the high points of past lessons.

In this archive of Back to Night School, we look at our lessons taught in September 2015. The month kicked off with our celebration “D. Wayne at 80,” on the eve of legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ 80th birthday. We then dovetailed in our SiriusXM radio simulcast lessons into a series of lessons aimed at both the numbers of handicapping and the eyes of the horseplayer. Topics broached included speed and performance figures, timing of races and run-up distances, trip handicapping, ground loss, post positions and much more!

Bob Neumeier: "Without getting into any handicapping, my first order of business is to assess where the ‘hype’ is coming from and how intense it is. If I believe the ‘hype’ is warranted, I typically pass on that event. But if I think it is unjustified, then I would jump into the wagering pool with both feet. A practical example of this would be the 2015 Travers Stakes. In short, going against the flow is my primary objective."

Terry Turrell: “The Classic will determine Horse of the Year providing American Pharoah and Beholder make the dance. The turf racing at Keeneland will favor Europeans with stamina and a strong late kick. The weather cannot be underestimated and will reward those with multiple game plans at post time. Because of the huge mutuel pools, the 50-cent trifecta offers the best value when structuring your investments.”

Candice Hare: “When it comes to international shippers in the Breeders' Cup, I prefer ones who've shown tactical speed and the ability to go left-handed.”

Brian W. Spencer: “Euros always get respect on the grass, but I'm much more inclined to key around them in the Turf as opposed to the Mile. When stamina comes into play in a race like the Turf, our European counterparts really have an edge, but barring any standouts like Goldikova, the American milers have held their own with the Euros. When running a mile over an American course in an American style of racing with a good pace up top, it plays much better to our more tactical strengths.”

Brian Nadeau: “As the writer of the Breeders' Cup Newsletter, I have to pay close attention to the European Group I races, and therefore I try to take that knowledge through to the Breeders' Cup. You can gain a lot by doing a little homework, be it from YouTube for race replays, or Racingpost.com to check the overall form of the top finishers in their big prep races. The races at Longchamp in early October, and to some extent those at Ascot in mid-October, will send several horses on to the Breeders' Cup, so having a comfortable handle on them can give you a big leg up on the majority of the betting public. While I can't sit here and tell you I had Karakontie last year at 30-1 in the Mile, it wasn't hard to deduce he was a player of some sorts, if you watched the replay of his brutally bad trip in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp.”

By Jeremy Plonk They don’t grade on a curve at the Breeders’ Cup. Kinda, sorta being right – and doing better than most – still can mean you leave with a pile of useless souvenirs. But what they do in racing’s championship is reward handsomely those who are on the money. You don’t have to light the Breeders’ Cup afire from Friday start to Saturday finish. Simply pick your spots and pile on where the feeling blazes. Over the next few dozen pages, we’ll take you inside each division’s history, spotlight some key trends and provide you the tools to work throughout October and in advance of the pre-entry announcements. Texas Track to Host Bank of America Challenge Championships By Martha Claussen

uffice it to say, this has been a challenging year for Texas horseracing. But the dust has settled and the Texas Racing Commission was granted funding. That was very good news for Lone Star Park as the 2015 Fall Meeting of Champions is off and running!

American Quarter Horses are the main attraction of the 26-day live racing season, which continues through Nov. 14. The racetrack, located in Grand Prairie, 15 minutes from DFW Airport, hosts the 2015 Bank of America Challenge Championships.

Quarter Horse Meet Features Richest Race in Texas The meet will feature a total of 29 stakes worth an estimated $3.425 million including eight Grade 1 races. Major stakes include the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap, the Dash for Cash Derby and Futurity and the $1 million Texas Classic Futurity. The Texas Classic is the richest race in Texas, and attracts the top horses in the country. Last year's Texas Classic Futurity winner was Terry & Irene Stennett's Torts On Fire, who gave trainer Trey Wood his second title in the prestigious race. Scarlett Hill Farms Inc.'s Lil Famous Dash, trained by Judd Kearl, won the Grade 1, Texas Classic Derby. Jockey, Trainer and Owners to Watch at Lone Star Park Judd Kearl (right) has won the Lone Star Park training title four times, and is back with a full barn. world champion, Jrc Callas First. Based on that noted accomplishment, his stable doubled in 2015. He was the third-leading conditioner last year at Lone Star and a close second to Angel Sanchez earlier in the year at Sam Houston Race Park. Luis Vivanco (right) won his first Lone Star riding title last fall, and returns for several prominent horsemen. Ricky Ramirez, who rides first call for the Wood barn, was leading rider in 2014 and Rodrigo Vallejo will be named on the lion's share of the Kearl runners. Damian Martinez won the riding title at Sam Houston Race Park and his victories on Jrc Callas First gave the young pilot a ton of confidence this year. Another rider coming up in the ranks is Francisco Calderon. Wagering and Contests Handicappers can take advantage of many wagering options offered at Lone Star Park. In addition to the standard WPS and exactas, rolling doubles, Pick 3's and 10cent superfectas remain popular. New this year is the introduction of 50-cent minimum trifecta wagers.

The "Fortune 6" wager is offered at the industry-low takeout of 12%. Lone Star Park has an excellent program called the Star Player Rewards for their handicapping players. Enrollment is free and members simply swipe their card to receive points for wagering as well as food and drink purchases. Rewards include free programs, valet parking, food and beverage credits and mutuel vouchers. For the past eight years, Lone Star Park has hosted a qualifying event for the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship. They will send the top two finishers from the three Championship Tournaments to the 2016 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas. Bar & Book Big Hit with Fans Lone Star Park opened its Post Time Pavilion simulcast center in May, 1996, eleven months before the track held its first live race meet. In 2011, a major renovation ensued resulting in the highly acclaimed Bar & Book, a freestanding race and sports center. The 36,000 square foot facility serves as a simulcast center for

horseplayers as well as a sports bar and casual dining restaurant to attract sporting fans of every genre. The state-of-the art complex can accommodate up to 237 customers with individual betting carrels and televisions. Enhancements include a nonsmoking area, a tiered level, including 30 lounge chairs and two VIP and multi-user interactive touchscreen televisions integrated into a table in the Sports Bar. The Bar & Book, a multi-million dollar investment, has been extremely popular in the Dallas Metroplex area. Racing fans have a comprehensive menu of tracks to bet, admission is free and poker aficionados can play free poker every Thursday in the World Poker Tour Amateur Poker League. Plus, the bar offers a selection of 12 draft beers! Bank of America Challenge Championships The Bank of America Challenge Championships is a national racing program, similar to the Breeders' Cup, with a culminating year-end championship weekend. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) selects racetracks across the country to

serve as host. The event, set for November 6 and 7, will return to Lone Star Park for the fifth time. If you are in Dallas, come out and experience the excitement live. Editor’s Note: We continue a season-long series spotlighting the members of the Horse Player NOW staff by introducing you to racing analyst and Night School co-host Caton Bredar. An award-winning journalist with nearly 20 years’ experience in television covering the horses, racing and handicapping, Caton Bredar joined Horse Player NOW in 2011 on the brink of Night School’s debut and has been a co-host of the program each of its five seasons. The Palatine, Illinois native grew up on the backstretches of Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course, where she exercised horses for a variety of trainers, including her father, Raymond Metzler. Her grandfather, Hall of

Fame jockey Ted Atkinson, won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes during his decorated career. Caton has held owner, trainer, and even racing official licenses. Bredar shifted full-time to television and handicapping in 1999 with the launch of TVG and has since covered horse racing for nearly

every sports network including HRTV, TVG, ESPN, ABC, CBS, and FOX. For six seasons, she also served as the horseback reporter for the world feed coverage of the Dubai World Cup meeting. At this year’s Breeders’ Cup, she’ll be an analyst on the world simulcast feed from Keeneland. Bredar, also can be heard each Saturday on SIRIUS Radio’s “Down the Stretch” with Bill Finley and Dave Johnson. A graduate of Knox College in Illinois, Bredar names class, race and pace shape, and body language and physicality among the keys to her handicapping style. Bredar’s favorite jockey is Florent Geroux and the great Allen Jerkens was her favorite trainer. She has a trio of favorite horses in the likes of Pink Pigeon, Volponi and Zenyatta.

She admits it’s tough to only name one race when asked the most memorable race she’s attended, but the first Kentucky Derby she ever attended, which was won by Winning Colors, tops the list. Additionally, Illinois-bred Work All Week’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint win (watch below) was special to her since he was ridden by a jockey her husband, Doug Bredar, represents. The Breeders’ Cup means a lot to my career. In 1994, I cashed my first checks in this industry as an intern for the event at Churchill Downs. A hundred and twenty-four bucks a week for about 80 hours work. But who was counting? It wasn’t much, but, turns out, it didn’t need to be. Somehow I parlayed that 4month internship into the next 21 years and haven’t looked back. Most of the great people I met and worked with that first year still are plying their trades across the industry and globe. Many more have come along since to develop relationships and friendships. Back then I was one of the few and first passionate about keeping stats and trends on racing’s big events. While yellow legal pads were the rule then, soon computer spreadsheets and the like would take over. But in 1994, if you wanted to know who was the last one-turn

prepper to stretch out and win the Juvenile, that yellow legal pad and an intern was the gold standard. The ’94 Cup put me front and center for Flanders vs. Serena’s Song, Gary Stevens committing a front-end felony aboard One Dreamer, and the mighty Lure. I can still recall the stretch run of every race on that card. Of course, the Breeders’ Cup was only 7 races back then. The BC has allowed me a chance to appreciate history from a handicapping context, which really does marry my favorite past times. It annually provides a look back and look ahead with a sprinkle of good fortune and a heavy dose of potential jackpots. When I think about it, there’s no wonder why we’ve clicked. - JP
