2015 Washington: WTBOA Officers elected

The 2015 WTBOA officers were elected at the WTBOA board of trustees meeting held on February 19. Will Brewer will serve his first year as president, supported by Darrin Paul as first vice president and Candi Tollett as second vice president. Steve Zerda will be the new secretary and Debbie Pabst is the new treasurer. In prior years the secretary/treasurer was one position, but that was changed after the recent bylaws revisions.

The executive committee will consist of Brewer, Paul, Tollett, Zerda and Pabst. The finance committee will be headed by treasurer Pabst, along with Brewer, Paul, Zerda and rounded out by additional finance committee member Mary Lou Griffin.

The board would also like to welcome John Parker to the board. Parker stepped in to fill out the remaining board term (through 2016) after the resignation of Rosalia DiPietro.

Thanks to all the past and present officers for their service and a special thanks to Dana Halvorson for his eight years of leadership as WTBOA president.

The 2015 BC Derby on September 13, 2015 will have something special to celebrate on the 70th anniversary of the crown jewel of stakes races at Hastings.

“The purse has been increased from $150,000 to $250,000,” said Hastings GM Darren MacDonald.

“That makes it the richest purse in the Pacific Northwest and we’re very proud and excited to make that statement.”

MacDonald acknowledged the co-operation that Hastings management has received from the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (BC Division), the Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association (HBPA) and the BC Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association (BCTOBA).

“We share a great working relationship,” MacDonald said. “Some of the initiatives and new programs we’ll be introducing this year are adding to the excitement we anticipate for the coming season.”

The Ship ‘n’ Win program offering $150,000 in total rewards for horses making their debut at Hastings Racecourse is referred to by MacDonald as “possibly the best in North America”.

Emerald Downs Announces 29 Stakes In 2015 $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) Sunday, August 16

A 29-race stakes schedule featuring the 80th renewal of the $200,000 Longacres Mile (GIII), and Washington Cup XIII..

Twenty-five stakes are scheduled on Sundays including the $200,000 Longacres Mile (GIII). The schedule features 12 stakes events for older horses, eight races for 3-year-olds, eight events for 2-year-olds and one race for Quarter Horses.

The road to the Longacres Mile begins Sunday, May 17 with the $50,000 Governor’s Handicap for 3-year-olds and-up at 6-½ furlongs and continues Sunday, June 14 with the $50,000 Budweiser Handicap at one mile. The $50,000 Mt. Rainer Handicap on Sunday, July 19 serves as the final local tune-up for the Mile.

Washington Cup XIII—six races exclusively for Washington-breds worth an aggregate $310,000 is Sunday, September 13 with the $60,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic for older horses anchoring the day long stakes extravaganza. It’s a position you hope you never need to be in — but if you suddenly become responsible for an orphan foal, here are five tips from Dr. Fernando J. Marqués, a specialist in large animal internal medicine at the WCVM, on what to expect.

1. Consult a veterinarian. “Because foals have no energy reserves in place,” explains Marqués, “they can go downhill very fast compared to an adult horse. So it’s important not to wait – at the first sign of trouble, call the vet.” Owners should keep the foal warm and dry until it can be seen by a veterinarian or transported to a veterinary facility.

determine if it needs any treatment besides nutrition and fluids,” says Marqués. There are a variety of situations, especially with a difficult or prolonged birth, that could have an impact on newborn foal’s health. Your veterinarian will want to assess these needs so they can be addressed as soon as possible.

3. The race for antibodies. A newborn will need colostrum or plasma to provide them with the antibodies needed to fight viral and bacterial infections.

“It’s not uncommon for neonates to get infections within their first hours of life,” says Marqués.

Colostrum must be given ideally within 12 hours of birth: after 24 hours the

foal’s intestinal lining will no longer absorb immunoglobulins (antibodies).

Beyond 24 hours, or if colostrum is unavailable, blood plasma can be given intravenously.

If owners are unsure as to whether a foal received enough colostrum from its mother, veterinarians can run a blood test to check for the presence of antibodies in the foal’s blood.

4. Nutritional needs.

If the orphan foal is healthy, its primary need is mare’s milk to provide nutrition and fluids. “Foals are fed 15 to 20 per cent of their body weight per day in milk,” says Marqués, “and should be fed every two hours.”

Overfeeding can be just as detrimental as underfeeding,

so following recommendations to calculate the right amount of milk is very important.

A number of commercial milk replacers made specifically for horses are available.

5. Be aware of normal foal behaviour. Having a baseline for normal expected foal behaviour can be extremely helpful.

The lack of a normal bonding with the mare or the lack of a suckle reflex, which can be indicative of “dummy foal” syndrome or systemic infection (sepsis), is a big red flag.

“The suckle reflex is a neurologic reflex, an involuntary and almost instantaneous response,” says Marqués. “It’s like

having your knee tapped with a hammer — it’s not a learned behaviour. If you put your fingers in a foal’s mouth and there’s a weak suckle or none at all, this is indicative of further problems.”

If the foal is unable to nurse, a veterinarian will need to determine why. Possible reasons include neurological

damage or sepsis, and the foal will probably need intravenous fluids, antibiotics, etc. until it recovers enough to drink or nurse normally.

Capo Construction Backs Fraser Downs’ First Sponsored Race

Fraser Downs hosted its first community business-sponsored race on February 22.

Sponsored by Capo Construction, the seventh race on the card was an added distance event contested at 1-5/8 miles with a purse estimated in excess of $4,500. The race consisted of a 10-horse field and was won by Justin Currie’s Camblaser in a time of 3:15 with Tim Bowman driving.

Officials with Harness Racing B.C. anticipate this will be the first of many other sponsored races in the future.

“This is an amazing opportunity to promote the sport, create partnerships and add a higher level of excitement,” read a statement posted by Harness Racing BC.

Canada To Host The World In 2017 Standardbred Canada is pleased to announce that it will host the 2017 World Trotting Conference and World Driving Championship.

The event, which is held every two years, will coincide with the 250th Anniversary of horse racing in Canada. It will also mark the 25th edition of the World Trotting

Conference, an event that was inaugurated in 1969 in the United States.

Today, at the closing ceremonies of this year’s World Trotting Conference, Australian officials formally passed the torch to Canada.

“We are delighted and very excited about the opportunity to welcome the global Standardbred racing industry to our country

in 2017,” said John Gallinger, President and CEO of Standardbred Canada.

“To tie this in with the 250th Anniversary of horse racing in Canada is really quite special.

“Every year, the bar is set very high,” said Gallinger. “We are inspired by the success of this year’s World Trotting Conference and World Driving Championship, in Sydney, Australia, and

we are going to be working very hard over the next two years to ensure that our event is world class.”

While locations and venues for 2017 will be confirmed in the coming months, one driver is already penciled in for the trip to Canada. Dexter Dunn, from New Zealand, by virtue of his victory in Australia, will be

guaranteed a spot in the World Driving Championship. He will be one of 11 international drivers taking part in the event.

“I’ve never been to Canada so I’m really looking forward to competing in 2017,” said Dunn.

Canada has previously hosted the World Trotting Conference and World Driving Championship

in 1973, 1989 and 2003. Canada has won the World Driving Championship in 1970 (Herve Filion), 1999 (Sylvain Filion), 2001 (Jody Jamieson) and 2011 (Jody Jamieson), but has never won on home soil.

Standardbred Canada will release more information about the 2017 World Trotting Conference and World Driving Championship as it is available.

Longacres Mile Winner STRYKER PHD Named Xpressbet 2014 Washington Horse of the Year

After a sensational racing season at Emerald Downs where he was unbeaten in a trio of stakes, including the 79th running of the Longacres Mile (G3), as well as two stakes placings on the always tough California circuit, Mona and Jim Hour’s STRYKER PHD was a popular choice for both older handicap and horse of the year honors. The now six-yearold gelding, his owners, breeders – Char Clark and Todd Havens – and his trainers, Larry and Sharon Ross, were warmly applauded by the crowd of over 200 in attendance for the Washington Thoroughbred Annual Awards ceremony held at Emerald Downs the evening of February 28. The Hours were also lauded as the leading owner by Washington-bred earnings in 2014, all due to Stryker Phd’s 2014 tally of $192,900.

Inflamation In Horses The Main Contriburtor To Lameness.

Inflammation is the main cause of lameness in performance horses. One of the main cause is repetition in the exercise program or the discipline that they are performing in. If you cannot remove the inflammation you cannot repair your horse. If the inflammation is not removed & or controlled from the joint arthritis is the end result guaranteed. The infection will manifest itself and invade all of the other joints in the body over time. Anti-inflamatories will not remove the inflammation but will mask it and facilitate increase the damage to the joint.

The Scientists at Stanford University indicate that you cannot remove the pain in the joint if you do not know you have a problem. The use of drugs including Bute and other anti-inflammatories are a mistake as they do not remove the inflammation and only cause more damage. If you have inflammation you cannot remove it with poultice, or sweating the joint. These foolish therapies only make the joint fluid less functional and open to other infections like viruses and arthritis.

We have tried using magnet blankets and wraps and found that they could not remove the inflammation. We have found no scientific evidence to rebuke our findings. If anyone has information to the contrary please contact us as we really need all of the information on the topic.

The main causes of inflammation are: Repetitive injury, surgery, injury from fall, overweight, blood sugar imbalance. This sugar imbalance is very common as horses receive a lot of additional sugar in their diet. Sugar also attacks the brain and causes long term issues other than lameness.

This causes a reduction in oxygen and fresh blood supply to the compromised cells. This starts the inflammation cycle in some or one of the following groups: muscles. Biography – Dan Jukich

Dan Jukich was a three-year-old toddler when his father Roy, a sportswriter with the Vancouver Sun, took him for a visit to the backstretch at what was then called Exhibition Park, home of thoroughbred racing on the west coast of Canada.

Today, at age 61, Dan is celebrating his 25th anniversary as track announcer at Hastings Racecourse in what he refers to as his “dream job”.

Born in Vancouver on August 17, 1953, he graduated from Vancouver Tech in 1971 and entered the workplace with Sparlings Sporting Goods in an entry level warehouse job that eventually led to becoming a successful member of the Sparlings sales team.

But Dan never lost his love for horses and the racing industry, drawing him to Fraser Downs Racetrack in Cloverdale, B.C. where he was hired as an eager young track announcer at the age of 24. A move in the same capacity to the thoroughbreds at Hastings Racecourse in 1990 was inevitable.

Even with his full-time duties at Hastings, Dan is still the ‘voice of the races’ at Fraser Downs, where the standardbred season does not conflict with his thoroughbreds’ schedule.

A 2008 winner of the Doug Gillespie Award for demonstrating superior leadership and service excellence, Dan continues to be Simulcast Director for both Fraser Downs and Hastings Racecourse.

Next to the legendary Jack Short, a member of both the Canadian and British Columbia Horse Racing Halls of Fame, Dan Jukich is the longestserving track announcer in Hastings’ history.

Over and above his widely acclaimed description of races from his broadcast booth perched high above the finish line at Hastings Racecourse, Dan has become a fixture as the track’s goodwill ambassador. He appears on behalf of Hastings at numerous charity functions; donates his time as master of ceremonies at various racing-related corporate events and is a congenial host to special guests invited to watch him at work behind the microphone on race days.

A respected member of the community, Dan has coached amateur baseball and soccer teams on Vancouver’s east side where he and wife Stephanie have maintained a residence for the past 33 years, raising son Matt and daughter Courtney. Following in his father’s footsteps, Matt is the track announcer at Northlands Park in Edmonton.

Dan comes by his love of sports honestly. The late Roy Jukich, Sr. was a sportswriter at the Vancouver Sun during the 1950’s and 1960’s while his still active mother Eileen was a former all-star pitcher and infielder representing British Columbian provincial softball play- downs. Dan somehow still manages to find time to participate in recreational hockey and baseball on a regular seasonal basis.
