Keeping it Fresh

T

here comes a time in everyone’s life when your future depends on whether or not you suck up the courage to try something new. I grew up in an area where thinking outside the “norm” of our cultural box was at best….RARE. Some things had continued unchanged and unchallenged for 50 years! We love our comfort zones don’t we!!

Twice, the Lord pulled me out of the Ozarks….both times with me fighting all the way! I wanted HIS will….but I wanted it MY WAY! Somehow it just doesn’t work that way…..

I cried out to God for “something new”…..and then dug my feet in and with white knuckles, actually was drug, kicking and moaning the whole way into the “new” that I had been crying out for! Crazy huh! But that’s how it seems to work; or at least with me it is…or was. We HATE unfamiliar ground don’t we! But if we never step onto unfamiliar ground…..we will expend our lives simply circling in the old and familiar and never experiencing the new and possibly….that which we were intended and created to experience!

The lady I bought my Gypsy Vanner from allowed me to buy him instead of someone else who wanted him for a life of competition in dressage, knowing his personality would

HATE a life of no variety. We do everything….all over the place! I am having MORE FUN placing Strider in positions to experience those things that are TOTALLY out of the “norm” for his particular breed. And the cool thing is….. he’s LOVING IT!! He is actually getting patterned up on barrels and goes in hunting one, WANTING to turn it…..all 1500 plus pounds of him!

Of course he can’t compete with QH’s in this THEIR sport but he doesn’t have to be the BEST to enjoy it! He also LOVES going after cattle and tracking steers. Do I think he’ll be the next PRCA heading horse of the year?

Let me just say….I’m not holding my breath. But that isn’t the point anyway.

What is the point? Just this….him and I ENJOYING doing these things together! No world title in view……. just us enjoying our partnership!

If I can take the fear of the unknown and especially the fear of failure out of the mix…..I can ENJOY things so much more! And really….when it comes right down to the nitty-gritty…. it’s all about discovering the heart of the Creator for us individually and getting in sync with Him in this life. He created us for His pleasure and enjoyment!! That means He takes GREAT DELIGHT in YOU!! Yeah…..YOU. He simply desires YOUR COMPANY!

He LONGS for your fellowship! And that doesn’t simply mean prayer y’all!

He wants to DO THINGS WITH YOU!! He created you for something in particular and you won’t be able to do it fully without His involvement!

And concerning new territory and new experiences….have you ever considered the VAST DIVERSNESS of this universe? Every flower is supremely unique in its design and the diversity of colors…..oh my! Have you EVER considered that God gets BORED with “same ole, same ole”??? The Bible even says…”sing a NEW song to the Lord”!

He gets tired of the rehearsed and old. He wants a friendship with YOU. One that is willing to experience new things with Him. He will lead us into new territory, new friendships, new experiences with Him…..if we will courageously trust Him and FOLLOW. Passion… in itself must stay fresh!

Lifeless religious services as well as a lifeless life…..is PROOF that God is not being allowed to LEAD! If He IS leading…..I can promise you….He will keep it FRESH!!

Handling cattle out in the real world.

With Richard Winters Horsemanship his summer we have been conducting horsemanship clinics at the V6 Ranch in Parkfield, California. The V6 is a working cattle ranch that enables our participants to get involved in some practical, hands on cattle working experiences. Even the most skeptical and timid riders go away thinking about how much fun and benefit there was in exposing their horses to cattle. I couldn’t agree more. As I have helped countless riders in this experience over the years, I’ve seen some common reoccurring themes.

Horses and cattle are a natural fit.

Although Quarter Horses might be the breed of choice for serious cattle work, any breed can become acclimated to cattle and allow the rider to perform cattle handling tasks.

I’m convinced that every horse can benefit and become a much more well rounded individual by being involved in cattle work. As they adjust and get comfortable to the noise, movement, and general commotion of cattle, horses become more self confident with what we are asking of them. that wants to yield away and acquiesce to the horse’s presence. Beginning to follow a cow around the arena becomes very empowering for a horse. Horses are natural followers. It’s amazing how quickly you can turn their apprehension into curiosity. And then it’s fun to watch their curiosity turn into confidence. It does not take a high-powered cow-bred horse to play these games and perform these simple tasks.

One of the challenges for casual horseback riders is the fact that they don’t have specific jobs to do with their horses. Without a specific job or task, riders tend to lack focus and direction with their horse. When you have a job to do, you tend to look up and begin to ride your horse with focus. You can’t drive a car looking at the hood ornament and you can’t ride your horse always looking down at their ears. Doing some simple cattle work helps riders have focus and ride their horses where they want them to go. It’s encouraging to see riders stop worrying about what is going to happen and begin to be the leader their horse needs them to be. The horse and rider now have a focus and a job to perform.

A lot of the micromanaging and nitpicking goes away and excuses are put aside. The horse’s attitude improves and a better partnership is formed.

Playing with the cattle also gives a lot of practical application to all of the body control drills that we do with our horses. Moving off of our leg, backing and moving the separate body parts of our horse become very relevant as we begin to move in and around cattle.

This helps the horse and rider begin to see how relevant and important it is to master the many exercises and drills that otherwise seem unimportant.

There are elements that need to be implemented, and safeguards put in place, to make this a positive experience. Going down on Saturday morning to the local team penning and rushing through the competition is not the right way to introduce your horse to a positive cattle-working experience.

Horses need to be exposed to cattle in a quiet, controlled, and sensible way that will help build their confidence rather than shatter it.

some time warming up their horses adequately before we start to play with the cattle. That means performing whatever groundwork necessary. Then walk, trott, and lope until the horse is physically, mentally, and emotionally warmed up and ready for their extracurricular activity.

Sometimes I will have a rider whose horse is very apprehensive about the cattle. I often have a “babysitter” horse and rider to go with them as they approach and walk-through the cattle. This support can make a huge difference for a horse that is not feeling very brave.

I know it is difficult for many riders to find opportunities where they can expose their horses to cattle, in a positive environment. However, there are many clinics and workshops offered by capable instructors where your horse can be exposed and benefit from this fun activity. Almost without exception, every participant leaves our cattle working clinics saying how much fun they had and what a great confidence builder it was for both horse and rider.

This summer I would encourage you to look for the right situation where you and your horse can get out and participate in a cattle-working experience. It’s a great opportunity to continue your horse’s education and bump up your own horsemanship game.

After crossing over into Tennessee where it merges with the Conasauga River trail, the trail makes a large loop back towards Cottonwood Patch campground. Other trails accessible from Cottonwood Patch include Beech Bottom (4 mi), East Cowpen (7 mi), Hickory Creek (8 mi), Horseshoe Bend (3.5 mi),Sumac (12 mi) and Rice Camp (4 mi). Trails are rocky and shoes would be recommended for horses.

S

howing horses in the summer heat can be a challenge, not to mention a health risk to both you and your horse. It’s especially demanding if you’re competing at a show where stalls or shade is unavailable.

Just like everything else, when it comes to keeping yourself and your horses healthy, thorough preparation is key. Ultimately, it can mean the difference between a safe ride, and a tragic one.

Proper hydration during hot or humid weather is critical for both horses and riders, and that need rises as the level of fitness drops, or the level of activity rises.

Making sure you and your horse drink enough water could be considered the main priority when preparing for a show.

While most people think packing a cooler filled with water bottles is enough preparation for a show day, it’s actually not.

Preparation starts at least the night before, if not one to two days before your show.

How many times have you been on your horse and thought, “I need to get a drink of water,” but then you don’t because no one is around to get you a drink, and you don’t want to get off your horse? It’s easy when you’re in the middle of riding, or getting ready for a class to put off drinking.

That’s why it’s a good idea to load up on water a couple of days before the show.

The same thing goes for your horse.

Don’t wait until the morning of the show to decide to give your horse electrolytes and hope they drink throughout the day.

By then, it’s too late.

Part of my normal every day feed program is to wet my horse’s feed down at least once a day. I will either wet their feed down, or feed soaked alfalfa cubes or beet pulp.
