Why Me God? by Crystal Lyons

P

eople ask that question all the time. Why is this happening to me? They get sick or have an accident and usually one of the first things out their mouth is, “why me Lord?” I actually think we need to ask that question MORE in life...except in the positive. Why just ask that question because of something bad? Why not ask it every time we have something incredible happen? My horse is awesome & I couldn’t have afforded him if he’d been priced how he was worth. It’s not like I am some awesome horsewoman who deserved a horse like that. So...”why me God?” I have been in boocoo’s of horse wrecks, athletic mishaps, NOT TO MENTION all the broncs and bulls I got on....and ended up UNDER. Yet I’m healthy. So...”why me God?” With all the people in the world working at jobs they hate, and me never wanting to go to college because I had this desire to do something “other than” and have been doing what I love for 3 decades as God takes care of me. So...”why me God?” What we focus on multiplies in our life. Focus on the heartache and pain and it will have children! Focus on how you were cheated out of something and your forward momentum stops right there. Focus on the blessings in your life and you attract more of the same. Negative or positive, what we focus on we become. Our personality literally gets altered by how we think. And what we think on, we attract more of! Positive and thankful people are easy to be around. They lift the spirits of others. But negative people will drain you! Why be a drain on others when you can be a blessing? But the fact is, I cannot give away what I do not personally carry. If I want to be a blessing to others, then I must recognize and be thankful for the blessings that are in my life. I must position myself in the correct frame of mind to focus on and be thankful for what’s GOOD. No matter what’s going on in your life right now, you have SOMETHING to be thankful for. Focus on THAT. Have you expressed a big THANK YOU to God lately for some of those blessings that you’ve been taking for granted? You HAVE eaten today haven’t you? Many people in the world have not! Sure, we’ve ALL had bad things happen, things we don’t understand. We’ve had incredible hurts and tremendous losses....but why LIVE THERE? I have the power to move forward and come higher. Just as a mountain climber would never attempt to climb while dragging dead weight....neither can we reach the heights we desire while dragging all the past hurts, losses and negative junk along with us! Cut the rope and drop that stuff! Jesus said it this way, “cast ALL your care upon Him for He cares for you.” If Jesus is asking for all that junk, who am I to keep carrying it?

Simplified, it’s like this; I can CHOOSE to stop dwelling on the pain and loss and God will give me supernatural joy. OR...I can live a life embracing and REHEARSING the hurts & wrongs done by others & I will sink lower, drag others down with me and die a negative person who NEVER reached my potential because I wasted all my energy blaming others for my misery. NO...I am HEALTHY and BLESSED & I don’t deserve to be so blasted HAPPY! So...”why me God??”

Rodeo and

Horsemanship

With Richard Winters Horsemanship Every December the worlds best rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, along with tens of thousand fans, converge in Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo. This is truly the Super Bowl of Rodeo. The top fifteen contestants in each event come to compete in ten rounds to see who will be crowned the World Champion in their particular event. The coliseum sells out every night with over 17,000 spectators and every sports bar and casino in town have big-screen TVs playing the event live. For those that can’t make it to Las Vegas, the rodeo is played for ten consecutive nights on television. Needless to say, it’s a big deal. My wife Cheryl and I were in Las Vegas during this time conducting Horsemanship Demonstrations at one of the huge Cowboy Christmas trade show venues in town. I’ve made some observations about the cowboys and cowgirls who competed in the timed events. The timed events include calf roping, team roping, bulldogging and barrel racing. Every one of the contestants knows the technical aspects of their event: How to handle a rope, the condition of the cattle and techniques for getting around a barrel. Each of the riders has the skill set and talent to be crowned the world champion. Each one of them is looking for a subtle edge and an advantage. I believe that edge is “Horsemanship”. Beyond how a contestant handles a rope or manages the cattle, how they ride their horses and the manner in which they communicate with their equine partner can make the difference in tenths of a second. At this level, those fractions of a second are the delineating factor between winning and losing. In the roping and bulldogging events, how a horse stands in the box before the steer or calf is released is crucial. Is the cowboy able to keep the horse’s head straight and pointed forward? Is he able to move the horse’s hindquarters placing him squarely in the corner of the box? Because the events are so fast and demanding, as well as intense, it is 12

easy for horses to become very anxious and worried in the box. It takes good horsemanship to keep a horse honest and correct in the midst of all this pressure. When I was younger and a novice roper, I had some understanding of the psychology of horsemanship. While practicing roping at the college level we all looked for opportunities to “score” cattle while standing in the roping box. This simply meant placing your horse in the corner of the box like you’re going to rope and then calling for the steer but not releasing your horse. This simple drill would help keep a horse more honest and waiting for the rider’s signal. At the end of the roping session I always liked to back my horse into the box, dismount and loosen my cinch and take off my horse’s protective boots. This simple practice helped my horse understand that the box could be a place of rest rather than always being a place of high intensity and stress. These are just two of the many horsemanship concepts that good contestants will practice to give themselves the horsemanship edge. Every barrel racer can benefit from establishing greater body control in their horse through leg cues. When rounding a barrel, being able to move a horse’s shoulder or rib cage over could make the difference between a barrel standing up and being knocked down. You can have the fastest horse at the rodeo, but without body control, through good horsemanship, it will not give you the competitive edge. At this world-class level of rodeo competition, riders are asking a tremendous amount of their horses. Sometimes horses will work in spite of us. Some contestants pay a tremendous amount of money to buy, lease or rent world-class horses who have been developed and trained by great horsemen. Yet more and more competitors are investing in their own horsemanship skills so that they can be strong positive leaders for their equine athletes. In two separate interviews during the NFR, I heard a barrel racer and bulldogger talk about making adjustments in preparing their horse for that evening’s run. They recognized that the attitude of their horse, along with the conditions of the arena, dictated a different horsemanship approach. They adjusted their preparation and warm up exercises, using good horsemanship techniques in a way that would better prepare their horses for the next round. They knew that it was not enough to just have a fast horse or know how to throw a steer. Good horsemanship would give them the edge they were looking for. In every rodeo timed event you have a partner and that partner is your horse. Those willing to be a student of the horse and horsemanship can develop a skill set that can enable them to rise to the top of their competitive discipline. At this level, it’s the little things that make a big difference. “Horsemanship” is the difference. VOLUME 2 | ISSUE 10 2016 Say you saw it in HORSE N RANCH TM

Daily Wellness Check for Your Horse By Lynn Palm

Keep your Western Dressage horse in top health by paying close daily attention. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That old saying especially applies to your horse’s health and safety. You can head off many potential problems—or catch them early—by doing a daily wellness check. When you do a daily check, you can often catch the “little things” before they turn into serious, expensive issues. The best time to do a daily check is when you feed your horse or clean his stall. If you someone else is feeding your horse, such as a barn manager, then that person needs to do the check for you. Another good time to do a check is before you turn him out, when you groom him, saddle to ride or take him out for a graze on the longe line. Daily Horse Check You’ll want to check your horse’s entire body during your daily check. Below I’ve commented on specific areas of the horse’s body that are easy to “miss” if you don’t make a specific effort to check carefully. If you check your horse in the same manner every time, you’ll always be sure to cover evaluating the entire horse. I suggest doing the check from “front to back and top to bottom.” If your horse has a longer hair coat you’ll need to take your hands and feel through the hair down to the skin in all areas of longer hair growth to detect any swellings, lumps, scrapes, etc. while you’re doing your check. Head If your horse has a face scrape that

you’ve treated for a couple of days that you find he’s rubbing the scrape and opening the wound more, your horse may have a fungal infection that’s causing him to rub. Consult your veterinarian at this point. He may direct you to wash the scrape with an antifungal shampoo on a daily basis before you apply a topical treatment to the scrape. Under jaw Take your hand and palpate under the horse’s jaw for any heat, lumps, swellings, cuts, etc. Poll During your grooming session, take your hand and feel for any bumps, swellings, or cuts in the poll area. Ask your horse to lower his head so you can check his poll. I know it’s easy when you have a tall horse that isn’t fond of putting his head down to skip checking the poll during your daily grooming. If that’s a challenge you have with your horse, you’ll absolutely want to work with him so that he lowers his head at your request. Bottom “v” of ear, inside ear, and ear’s back Again, take your hand and gently feel the bottom “v” of the ear and inside the ear for any cuts, bumps, swellings, etc. Neck crest Feel along the entire neck where the mane grows out from the neck. Part the mane so you can feel all the way down to the base of the neck for any cuts, lumps, swelling, scabs, etc. Tail bone Stand to the side of your horse and close

to your horse at either side of the hip. Using your peripheral vision watch your horses ears as you gently take your hand and palpate the entire tail bone. Check for any swelling, cuts, scabs, bumps, etc. “Listen” to your horse for him to “tell” you with his tail, ears, or body movement that something is “not right” as you palpate his tail bone. Stomach - midline You’ll need to again “listen” to your horse as you take your hand and palpate the horse’s “middle” or stomach area checking for any lumps, bumps, crusts, cuts, etc. A flashlight is helpful for checking this area too if you’re in a dimly lit location. Horses on pasture may get small cuts or skin scrapes from burrs or thistles getting stuck to the skin in this area. If the cuts and scrapes are not attended to (whatever the original cause) there’s a chance the skin can get infected and need treatment. Sheath or udder area Check for swellings, cuts, etc. On mares you’ll want to periodically check for a gummy substance called “smegma” that builds up between the mare’s teats. (Geldings and stallions accumulate smegma in their sheath area and will need to be checked as well.) Be VERY careful when examining mares in this area and if you are uncomfortable checking your mare, get qualified help. Mares, geldings, and stallions will often rub their tails to “tell” you that the smegma build up is irritating them. Hock Check for puffiness/sponginess/heat in

front and back of the hock. Tendons and ligaments along cannon bones Use your hands to palpate the horse’s ligaments and tendons from the knee down on the front legs and the hock down on the hind legs. Check for any heat, swelling, cuts, etc. Know what is “normal” for your horse. Coronet band Crouch down and to the side of your horse as you take your hand and feel around the entire coronet band. If you have a horse that has “feathers” such as a Clydesdale or excess hair around the coronet band you’ll need to be especially careful to feel the actual skin surface to note any bumps, cuts, scrapes, swellings, etc. Be sure to feel in the “seam” area when the coronet band meets the hoof as often times cuts can go undetected in that area. Heel bulbs Look and feel for any redness, swelling, bleeding, crustiness, etc. in the heel bulb area. A condition called “scratches” can develop in this area so you’ll want to especially make sure to check the heel bulbs. Hooves Checking your horse’s hooves every day is important for his safety and long term health. If your horse has shoes, check for any loose or sprung clinches. When you look at the bottom of the horse’s hoof, check to make sure the shoe fits securely to the hoof. If it’s loose, call your farrier ASAP. He may need to remove the shoe, and tack it back on securely to the hoof. Pick each hoof carefully to remove any mud, pebbles, and debris. If your horse is wearing pads, remove any packed dirt,

Looking for a

mud, etc. that may be stuck to the pads. Check for any offensive smells they may come from your horse’s hooves. If you encounter a strong odor you may need to treat the hooves for thrush. By doing a daily check of your horse’s body you’ll be able to address many situations needing first aid. To properly care for cuts, scrapes, swellings, etc. as a result of your daily check or accidents that may happen at your barn (both horse and human) you’ll want to have a fully stocked equine and human first aid kit (I use and recommend EquiMedic products) at your barn at all times. It’s one of the best insurance policies you can buy for your horse and you! You’ll have confidence and peace of mind in knowing that you’ll be able to address minor first aid challenges and be able to give your horse help before the vet arrives or before your horse is trailered to the vet. If you like more information related to doing a daily check of your horse, you’ll enjoy our DVD, “Grooming to Gain Your Horse’s Trust & Love.” Find this, along with many other helpful training materials, at www.lynnpalm.com, or by calling 800-503-2824.

Trail Tip of the month

Just Say Hello

There’s an expression in French: Simple comme bonjour, “simple as hello”. Do you greet the folks that you’re sharing the trail with? You should. A friendly “Jambo” when you meet someone on the trail will not only help horse riders become everyone’s favorite trail partner it can also help to keep you safe. The hiker you politely greeted could be the vital link that directs Search and Rescue to your location after a wreck that leaves you hurt and scared along the trail. You want the people you encounter on the trail to remember meeting you. Hello is a great way to start a conversation. Ask about the trail conditions ahead, water sources, or how far until the next trail junction or campsite.

Here’s a great area to practice saying hello on the trail. Cedars of Lebanon State Park Trailhead Coordinates: 36.072229, -86.317226 Easily located a short drive from both Nashville and Murfreesboro Cedars of Lebanon State park has nearly 13 miles of horse friendly trails to explore in the park and hundreds of miles of trails to ride in the adjoining State Forest. Park and unload near the riding near the stables and remember to bring your Coggins papers with you when you visit. For more detailed information on this fabulous park visit www.trailmeister.com/trails/cedars-of-lebanonstate-park/ .

Being polite, offering a friendly “Shalom”, and encouraging the people we share the trails with to engage in a brief chat will also help your horse to understand that the strange lycra clad beast ahead is indeed just another odd human, and not an equine eating creature to fear. An “aloha” when coming across other trail users will help to break the stereotype of horsemen as rude, inconsiderate, and even dangerous. If we want to break the cycle of trail loss, horsemen need to become everyone’s favorite trail partners. We can do that in a variety of different ways starting with being polite. Have you ever been riding, when someone greeted you with a hello, and it made you feel good? We all have. Those experiences underscore how powerful a simple hello can be. When you say hello to someone you’re acknowledging them, and we all love to be acknowledged. Every time we fail to say hello when we pass another trail user is a lost opportunity to make a positive difference in the world. You don’t have to say “Konnichiwa” to everyone. Although I try to make it a point to say hello to all I meet on the trail, an exception is the very rare event when you happen upon someone who makes you feel unsafe. Keep moving in those situations, pull out a cell phone if you have one, or pretend that you’re with a group that is just behind you. If we say “bonjour” just half the time we pass someone on the trail we’ll be making a huge difference and improving the world. It’s as simple as “hello!” 22
