M

y son, by God’s grace, earned a spot…one of only 12 spots at the time…out of 100 young men trying out for a chance to go to Ranger School. We were ecstatic! He ended up spending over 100 days in Ranger School re-cycling each of the 3 phases only to NOT get his Ranger tab. I cried….Tyger cried. It was heart wrenching to say the least.

NOTHING made sense! Even some of the guys in his squad was at a loss as to why he was failed….having completed his missions successfully. He spent the next year mentally and emotionally set back by the heart breaking incident. As he says, he KNEW that God didn’t fail him, but try as he would….it FELT like God failed him!! He could see NOTHING GOOD coming from this.

We had multiple talks over the next two years about this. Though I had no understanding as to “why” either or what God was doing….I DID HAVE enough years and experience with the Lord to know that NOTHING is purposeless if we respond correctly! I remember telling him that “one day you will look back on this and SEE the wisdom of God working for your benefit”. Though he did listen, he probably didn’t believe those words would ever ring true.

Two years passed and another opportunity arose to go back to Ranger School.

As Tyger said, it was “unfinished business”. Although he was NOT at all looking forward to the 60 plus days of grueling mental, emotional and physically harsh training, he knew it was time to kick this thing in the butt! This time he went through all 3 phases without re-cycling once and he found himself totally different from how he was 2 years before. The first time he was only concerned about making it through the ordeal himself, this time he was watching over everyone in his squad to help THEM succeed. He had become a better leader.

When one young man was about to be sent home because of failing 2 missions, Tyger gave him a higher peer rating then he actually deserved and also talked a friend into doing the same, because, he said, “the guy was already going to be facing failure…to be peered out as well is too heart crushing”. Tyger had become a better man.

Two years before he couldn’t have imagined saying something like that. But now…looking back….he can easily see, he wasn’t ready.

Just because you or I have the talent to step up to the plate….doesn’t mean we are ready for the position. Sometimes, the best thing that can happen to us is to experience failure.

We don’t improve from our successes…..we succeed…..because we have improved through our failures!

INFRARED/RED LIGHT THERAPY is proving to help horses like humans. Presented here by Staff Instructor, Chris Glover of Georgia. A 19 year professional farrier who at age 17 only wanted to learn to shoe his own horse and is currently on the cutting edge of helping performance horses by learning about the whole horse and now passing it along to new farriers.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY is helping farriers as with the Infrared Thermal Image (Thermography) shown here. Link Casey, Head Instructor, demonstrates how it helps the farrier and owner visually see where problems are occurring anywhere on the horse. It is important that owners realize that more problems on a horse will occur with the lower limb and hoof and the farriers’ role is important.

EQUINE MASSAGE THERAPY is a technique patented by Farrier and Equine Adjuster, Dan Marcum of Texas, Staff Instructor with a 50 plus year career in the horse industry is shown here using his hands to pin point the problem. Richard’s credentials extend from the rodeo arena and high desert ranches of the west to being a highly sought after trainer, horsemanship clinician, and expo presenter.

Richard Winters’ horsemanship journey has earned him Colt Starting and Horse Showing Championship titles. Obtaining his goal of a World Championship in the National Reined Cow Horse Association became a reality. He is an AA rated judge. Another of Richard’s horsemanship goals was realized with his Road to the Horse Colt Starting Championship and then returned for 5 consecutive years, as the Horseman’s Host. In 2015, Winters’ earned the NRCHA Hackamore Circuit Championship title in Pueblo, Colorado and the Limited Open Derby Championship in Paso Robles, California.
