To Buy Your Own Farm or to Board Your Horses?
A
re you a person that struggles with the decision to purchase your own horse farm or board at a farm that has all that you need? There are pros and cons to both. When you board your horse or horses all of their care and feed is provided for them for a fee. In some cases that fee is less then what a mortgage would be. Often times it is more costly than a mortgage. You will still have fees for vets, farriers, supplements, and plenty of other items. When boarding your horses you have more freedom to come and go as you please. Choosing to buy a Horse farm is a way of living for most people. It is part of a definition of their character, they are a farmer. Raising your family on a farm is a way of life that teaches lessons in caring for the land, the buildings, the fences, and the animals that stays with a person for their entire life. It gives them a stronger work ethic in most cases. There are lots of benefits to owning your own farm. The biggest is a sense of pride, people are proud of their animals and land. Many work full
Boot & Blankets to keep you & your animals warm!
time jobs and come home to continue to work full time to make sure their place is in the best shape it can be and their animals have everything they need. It is also one Kelly Martin of the best financial investments a person can make. Over the course of 20 years I have seen people who invested $200,000 and turn it into $2,500,000 with their farms. We are living in a growing area and we can’t grow more land. While you are owning horses you can also grow your wealth through investing in your own farm land rather than investing it in someone’s else’s farm land through board money. When making the choice for yourself weighing the pros and cons is important. Kelly Martin is an expert in selling & buying equine facilities. She is a realtor with ReMax Renaissance Realtors. E
Is your horse performing as well as he should?
ven the most cared for horse can have performance issues from time to time. Does any of this sound familiar? • Stiffness (maybe worse on one side) • Problems bending • Sore back • Tail Switching • Short striding • High head • Hard to get leads If your horse exhibits any of these behaviors, he may benefit from Equine Flexion Therapy. Learn how you can keep your horse flexible and supple, more comfortable and able to perform better. Using techniques including deep motion flexing and massage you can keep your horse feeling his best. Flexing is for normal problems such as stiffness, irritability, tail switching, and stifle problems, as well as for saddle soreness for riding and handling feet. It is excellent for event, lame or foundered horses. A great way to feel and identify the relaxed or sore muscles & tendons to improve
movement on live horses… not by dissection! Through a process of flexing, massage, and deep motion flexing, Equine Flexion Therapy can help keep horses more flexible and comfortable, aligning the spine without chiropractic adjustments and addressing the muscles that control the skeleton. Evaluation is done through testing the range of motion and palpation tests. Then muscle therapy and deep motion flexing can help align the spine and the treated muscles will help prevent the spine from being pulled out of alignment. This course is meant to help owners with their horses, farriers with their client horses and any other horse person concerned about the health and wellbeing of horses.

WEIGHTINESS… by Crystal Lyons
I
love dealing with my stallion when that kind eye of his is showing. When he’s in that mode he’s like a huge puppy dog and it makes me wanna just wrap my arms around his neck and breathe him in. I also like it when he’s in his “look at me…I’m the awesomest thing here” mode! He’s a blast to ride then. All collected and arched and strutting…I feel like a princess astride a great war horse making an undeniably impressionable entrance. But…..I do NOT like dealing with him when his third brain has completely taken hold of his senses. The other day I was getting him collected to ship semen again and before I even recognized that he had reared, I was hit in the head by a hoof or a knee…I don’t know which. It happened so fast. He’s not mean at all…..I’m thankful for that…. but he can become oblivious to anyone and anything other than his own desires and agenda! I’ve owned several stallions and each one was easily subdued by me… (or they became geldings), but the very size and weight of this guy has made it harder for me to stay in charge. My challenge with Strider caused me to realize in greater clarity a principle that I already knew; to the degree someone carries a weight of authority in any realm, to that degree, their actions have farther reaching and weightier consequences on others. A person…..say, a minister….as he grows in recognition and authority, what he DOES has a greater effect for good or bad. Like my stallion…it doesn’t matter if that person means no harm to anyone…..the greater the weight of influence….the greater the harm will automatically come if his own interests and selfish agenda takes over. My stallion means no harm…..but his size and weight alone makes any undisciplined action a danger! Just so….the more weight of influence a person carries, the more harmful a singular act of undisciplined behavior will cause! It doesn’t necessarily mean a person is bad….just undisciplined in their character and selfish in their motives. OK….let’s take this scenario out of the realm of “all those preachers and politicians out there” and let’s bring it closer to home! What about ME. My realm of influence may not have any further reaching effects other than my own immediate family…..but the effects to my spouse and children can still be devastating! I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve heard this spoken from the
lips of the one who committed adultery….”I never meant to hurt you”. It doesn’t MATTER that we never meant harm…..the moment we do something out of our own selfish desires… harm is the result! Our children’s hearts get ripped out….a home that had trust and thus felt safe, just suffered a deadly blow…..all because someone who carried authority in that home forgot about everyone else as they zeroed in on their own selfish appetites . My stallion is KIND and he actually really, really LIKES me, but that has NO BEARING on my safety when his physical desires become the overruling power in his thinking! Why…. because he wishes me harm? Not at all. But the very fact of his size and strength can be a blessing to me or a danger….depending on how well disciplined or UNDISCIPLINED he is. The same is true for all of us……what we do, choices we make…..they MATTER! And whatever degree of influence we hold, our actions bring a blessing or cause pain! Anytime any of us allow selfish desires to gain a foothold in our thinking…..damage done to those within our circle of influence will inevitably follow.

When your horse needs to look and feel his best, you need new Laser Sheen Skin® & Coat Supplement. This scientifically formulated blend provides essential nutrients for a radiant coat and healthy skin from the inside out. It also contains a probiotic to support proper digestion of nutrients, allowing your horse to get the most benefit from each ingredient. There’s less waste because the unique extruded nuggets are readily eaten. Feed it year-round and watch your horse bloom. Look Out for Equine hances are, you played with magnets when you were younger. You understand how they work. With two magnets in your hand they are attracted and pull towards each other. You can also turn the magnets around and they will then push away or repel from each other. Something very similar happens when riding our horses. There are areas and directions that they are drawn to and are always attempting to drift towards. Then there are other areas that they attempt to fade away from and feel repelled.
Here I am allowing this filly to find some rest up in the “scary” corner.
My intern is keeping this colt’s feet busy while hanging around his equine friend.
Now my intern allows the colt to find some rest and comfort away from his “friend”.
18
It’s important that we are always aware of these magnets playing out in our horse’s mind. If we are passive and don’t address these issues these magnets will get more powerful and our problems will get bigger. However, if we are proactive and ride smart, we can begin to eliminate these mental magnets and develop a horse that is much more balanced. I recently saw this exemplified during a short visit to my daughter, Sarah, and her husband Chris Dawson, at their training facility in Texas. This is the time of year when they are starting all of their two-year-olds and the young horses are very green. On this particular morning Sarah was riding some two-year-olds that had never been in this particular large indoor arena before. With almost every colt she could feel the hesitancy of them wanting avoid the corners of the four sides in the arena. In other words, the magnets were pushing the colts away from the corners. Those youngsters were pretty sure that there could be monsters or some other dangerous thing lurking just on the other side of the wall in those corners. As Sarah worked a colt around the arena, at the trot and lope, when it was time to give the colt a rest, she rode up into the corner as far as she could go. There she stopped the colt and rested, allowing him to catch his breath. After a few times you could see the colt getting more and more comfortable about going up into the corners. The place initially thought as scary and dangerous was proving to be a comfortable spot where they could stop and rest. Sarah was systematically removing the repelling magnets. A little later that morning, Sarah was on a different two-yearold and one of her interns was riding another very green colt in the same large arena. As they moved around the arena, the intern’s colt felt comfortable moving out only if he could follow Sarah’s horse. That was the young horse’s comfort zone. It was a definite magnet pulling the intern’s mount toward
With Richard Winters Horsemanship Sarah’s colt. Sarah instructed the intern to quit attempting to steer the horse away. If the intern’s colt wanted to come toward Sarah, he should allow it. Now, when the colt got near Sarah’s horse, she instructed the intern to take the end of his lead rope and create some commotion and keep his colt’s feet moving forward. “Don’t let him stop and get comfortable next to me”, she instructed. After just a few moments of busy feet trotting around her horse the intern’s colt drifted away. “Now relax, rub and pet your colt. Show him that the most comfortable spot is out there with you and away from us,” she said. Soon the colt became more independent and trusting in the intern’s leadership rather than depending on the other horse as a babysitter. Sarah helped the intern diminish the magnet that was pulling his colt toward her horse. What was exemplified in the arena that morning? The same principle that’s true in every training situation: It’s our job to make the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult. Being creative in these situations help to change our horse’s mind about their preconceived ideas. Before long, our ideas become their ideas, enabling us to begin to work together, when presented in a manner they understand. It’s not only when training two year-olds that a rider might experience these magnets. You can feel magnets with your horse almost daily. There’s a pretty good chance that there is a magnet on the gate of your arena. Do you ever feel your horse wanting to move quickly through the arena and back towards the gate and then move slowly while leaving the gate area? If you want to eliminate this magnet, it’s important that you not stop and rest or visit with your friends near the gate. Let your horse work harder around the gate and then ride over to the other end of the arena to stop and rest. I will often dismount and lead my horse out the gate, at the end of the session, rather than ride out of the arena to get back to the barn. I want to eliminate, not encourage magnets. Consider how Sarah dealt with the pulling and repelling magnets in her young horses. Use that same principle with your horse in or out of the arena. Be proactive and set up situations that will give you a balanced, magnet free horse. “Hey Sarah, where did you learn those techniques?” I asked. “Oh dad, you know”, she replied. Her response made me feel good!

Horse Manners A
horse will often times develop some unwanted behaviors if we don’t know how to prevent it; usually unwanted by us. To the horse it may be pleasurable or enjoyable. Sometimes these behaviors become conditioned responses; in other words, habits a horse learns, sometimes taught by us humans. A horse is conditioned to do certain things when reinforcement is applied. If the reinforcement, positive or negative, makes the horse comfortable, the response becomes a conditioned response. Think about your horse and something he may have done and a negative response was applied by you, such as a punishment is sometimes rewarding in that it gains attention for the horse. This is the same as in children and dogs. Sometimes misbehavior is to gain attention which is why punishment often times makes misbehavior worse. When I use the tern punishment, I am referring to discomfort NOT being brutal of aggressive. Discomfort should be used in such a way that the horse thinks he is doing it to himself rather than blaming you for it. For instance, one behavior that is unwanted is biting or being nippy. First of all, don’t teach or cause your horse to become mouthy. One act that will teach them to be mouthy is hand feeding,
treats or feed and carrying the treats in your pocket thinking it’s cute for them to nudge your pockets looking for them. (I don’t allow my horses to have treats or for that matter anything that says comfort, from anyone other than me, that’s another article for later) If you do have a horse that is mouthy or tends to want to bite, one way to help change this unwanted behavior is; set the horse up for this interruption in behavior. Be in the proper position and ready to apply the appropriate pressure. When the horse puts his nose in your space you just interrupt that intrusion by quickly bumping their nose using your elbow or whichever body part they are coming toward and stop, then continue with whatever you were doing. Don’t be angry because we are usually the one who taught this behavior in the first place. {A’INT it amazing what we teach our horses by not knowing that we are teaching our horses? Every time we are with our horses we are teaching, right or wrong.} The horse then thinks he caused the bump on his nose, sort of an electric shock, after a few times of consistency and knowing how to handle this situation, the horse will cease in this behavior. You have just conditioned a new response or I should say a non-response. Don’t correct these behaviors using anger or with a growl in your voice. Just

be assertive and think like your horse thinks and do what another horse would do. That’s what will work best. Assertion works more than aggression. Aggression causes fear in the horse. This is only one example, there are many, many more. Cause the wrong thing to be difficult and the right thing to be easy.
