The IMPORTANCE of Hoof Care Hoof care and maintenance are just as important for horse owners to learn more about as it is for the farrier to share with clients. Owners should share in the responsibility of owning horses. A little knowledge can go a long way in understanding how important the lower limb and hoof is to the overall health of the horse.

Certified Farrier Referrals in your area can be obtained by calling (706)397-8909 or 8047 or email the BWFA at farrierhdq@aol.com. This has been provided by the Casey & Son Horseshoeing School and the Farriers’ National Research Center and the Brotherhood of Working Farriers Association, Inc. located in Georgia.

Facing Intimidation

by Crystal Lyons

Intimidation: Give it an inch

and it’ll take over!! My stallion is a professional intimidator! When I bought him he was 4 years old…. big…16 hands big and very acclimated to being obnoxiously undisciplined on the ground. He’s not mean; he just likes his ideas BETTER. And he can come up with some ideas let me tell ya! When I first saw a video advertising him for sale, I remember thinking, “What a FART! He’s just what I want!” He has personality that is literally ROARING to get out! Exuberant personality harnessed and he’s a showboating machine!! Unharnessed, he can quickly become a monster!

...intimidation is defeated by simply keeping your inward courage and outward poise intact. That kind of extraverted type A personality is great for what I want him for….basically showing out in front of an audience…but buddy…if he’s not kept under control, he’ll take over in a heartbeat!! From the first day I got Strider home, we kinda came to terms.

From the video I suspected what he’d pull and I was ready. I stepped into the large lot where he was and sure enough, here he came thundering up to me to “play” and if he happened to knock me down…. oh well! I caught him across the nose with the popper of a whip. It sounded like a 22 shot. Perfect hit! He stopped in his tracks, shook his head, wallowing his lips around and decided that must not be the acceptable way to approach humans. WIN!! Every now and then I have to give him a “tune up” to keep him mannerly because old habits do tend to creep back in. But the point is…if I allowed him to intimidate me, he would take over! Intimidation can never be yielded to without losing a place of authority that belongs to you. We give up victories unnecessarily when we allow intimidation to master us. Fear is always in the mix when intimidation is in play. Even when it’s from someone who is our superior, say bosses at work, you must show respect and fulfill your job but never bow on the inside to intimidation. You don’t need to be loud or brass or disrespectful, intimidation is defeated by simply keeping your inward courage and outward poise intact. You know where I have the hardest time overcoming intimidation? In my

own mind! I leave an event thinking… ”I could have done LOTS better”… ..”I’m such a backwoods goober head, I probably won’t get the opportunity to come back”….etc., etc. If I start listening to the thoughts inside my head about myself, I quickly want to just crawl in a hole and disappear from public view! When my head is screaming what a loser I am is when I have to gather up the most courage to overcome self-inflicted intimidation! Heck….facing off my stallion is MUCH EASIER then defeating my own discouraging thoughts! But intimidation is intimidation, no matter where it originates! Defeat it or it will defeat you! Face it with courage and don’t yield to it for one second because if you do, you will find yourself on a downhill slide. God NEVER uses intimidation…..NEVER! God is waiting to see if you will oppose intimidation so that He can empower you to defeat it! God LOVES helping us move in victory and defeat the enemy! Even when that enemy is within my own head!

HAY or CUBES? That is the Question With Richard Winters Horsemanship Good Quality Alfalfa Hay – Nothing wrong with that!

I

travel extensively throughout the United States, with my horses, conducting horsemanship clinic’s and seminars. It’s not unusual for us to load up two or three horses and be gone for two months at a time. Keeping my horses on a consistent diet and feed regiment can be a challenge. I load up as many bales of hay as I can before leaving home. However, after a couple weeks I’m running low and need to find a new source of feed and I’m thousands of miles away from my original hay source. With that in mind, I’ve done some research and have made a decision to share this information with you. Over the years, I have literally fed hundreds of tons of baled hay. Starting this month, I’m switching over to hay cubes. Hay cubes are simply regular hay that has been chopped and compressed into small bite-size pieces. Hay cubes can be purchased by the bag or in bulk. They are often available with straight alfalfa or a blend of alfalfa and oat or grass hay. The minimum protein level is printed on each bag allowing the consumer to decide what forage mix is appropriate for the horses they feed. When I’m on the road, finding hay that is consistent with what my horses have been eating is always a challenge. Now, when I am three states away from home, and out of feed, I can go into almost any feed or Tractor Supply store and purchase hay cubes that are very similar to what my horses have been eating. Even at home, it is often difficult to consistently purchase the same type and quality of hay throughout the year. Hay cubes will give me the consistency that I’m looking for. I was first introduced to feeding large numbers of horses hay cubes during my ten years at The Thacher School. Over 100 horses were fed hay cubes twice daily where each young person was responsible 12

Alfalfa Hay Cubes – A valuable alternative?

for feeding their own horse. A huge benefit of feeding cubes was the ability for each horse to get a consistent amount of feed each time. As you know, baled hay is fed in flakes that vary in size and weight. Feeding two flakes from one bale might mean ten pounds. Two flakes tomorrow might equal fifteen pounds. With inexperienced young people the hay cubes filled to a certain level in a bucket insured consistency for each feeding. My daughter and son-in-law are professional reined cow horse trainers who also feed hay cubes. Horses are constantly coming and going at their facility. With over forty head of horses, they have had no problem with horses transitioning and doing well with the cubes. Traveling to horse shows throughout the year, they also like the availability of cubes, no matter where the need arises. Cost-effectiveness is important. I’ve been concerned that hay cubes are generally a little more expensive per pound then baled hay. However, when I realistically look at all the wasted hay around my haystack, in the stalls, and ultimately in my maneuver bin, I think I’ll be money ahead. Even if my horses are good about cleaning up all of their hay, just moving baled hay around for transport and feeding leaves a lot of waste on the ground that gets raked up and ultimately discarded. No matter how careful I am it seems there’s always a portion of my baled hay that gets wet and moldy, especially in the winter months. That’s money down the drain. Not only is it costly, it is also dangerous should my horses eat hay that has gotten rain damaged and moldy. Hay cubes are processed in a manner where the moisture level is constantly monitored. Mold is not a problem. There’s also little to no dust with the cubes, which is a big plus

with my horses. Hay purchased at the feed store is generally sold by the bale. However, bales vary greatly by weight. I might buy a bale of hay for $18 that weighs 125 pounds. The feed store down the road advertises hay at $15 a bale. That sounds like a better deal. However their hay bales only weigh 100 pounds. This is something you have to watch closely if you’re trying to get the best deal. Hay cubes are always purchased by the pound so you know exactly how much you are getting for your money, that’s important to me. People are often concerned about the possibility of “choke” or “colic” with horses that are fed processed feeds such as cubes. In my own experience, I observed approximately one hundred horses being fed cubes over multiple years. I’m not aware of ever seeing a choking episode. Colic was also rare. I also looked for research that indicated increased physical problems with feeding cubes. I was unable to come up with any information to validate that assumption. Now you know my plan of attack moving forward. You might have a feeding regiment that works very well for you. If you’re happy with your feeding program, and its results, then there’s probably no need to change. If you can relate to some of my experiences, than switching to this alternate feed source might be an option for you as well. This is a major change for us. I would be curious to know your experience. If you’d like more information, I found a great article from the Kentucky Equine Research Inc. The article was titled “Nutrition and Convenience in Cube Form.” Shoot me an email with your thoughts to richard@ wintersranch.com and I’ll tell you how it’s going with us, straight from the horse’s mouth!

Horses are like

Jim Swanner

Bubble Gum I’

m sure all of us have chewed our share bubble gum and had a contest, whether with someone or with our selves, to see how big we could blow a bubble. You can only blow so much air into the bubble before it pops. The pressure is too great for the bubble gum to hold. Then you have bubble gum on your face. We have all laughed at people who have done that, even ourselves. Horses are kind of like the bubble gum bubble. If we add too much pressure they will explode, not literally, but mentally. You can only apply so much pressure to a horse when asking it for a specific task before it’s too much. We have to be able to recognize this pressure point with a horse. When we add this pressure to a horse we must have a release valve for when the horse tries. Take the pressure off immediately and stop asking. Just be there with your horse and allow it to soak on what just happened. For instance; if you are asking your horse to move sideways to the left, don’t have any pressure on him on his left. He will get confused and if you increase pressure on the right and haven’t removed the pressure on the left your horse could get agitated and become very confused. He’s not trying to do the wrong thing; he just doesn’t know what it is you’re asking for. We have to know how to ask. We have to be consistent and persistent in our asking. If the pressure is not on the left side and he moves to the left away from the pressure you are putting on his right, 20

release the pressure so your horse understands if he goes away from the pressure the pressure will come off. This sounds so obvious, but you would be surprised how often we mess this up. Want your horse to back up, add pressure to the front and no pressure from the back end. When you add pressure add it as light as you want your horse to be and increase the pressure and hold until your horse responds and release immediately. I’ve seen people surge the pressure on a horse; for example-yank and release-yank and release. Don’t be this person. Add softness to your hand. Now, when your horse tries to do something you’re asking, stop there and get away from it. Go do something else. Or, do nothing at all. We have a saying “Don’t just do something….Stand there”. If your horse is having a problem doing something or trying to figure out what it is you are asking, first thing to do; evaluate if you are asking in a way your horse understands; second thing, evaluate if your horse is ready to learn what you’re asking. If it’s not ready think about the process you may need to use to get to that place where the horse is ready. Like us, we had to learn to roll over before we could crawl, crawl before we could stand, stand before we could walk, walk before we could run—get the picture? Start where your horse needs you to start and progress from there. Don’t try to start ahead of where your horse is. Help him to understand first. You will be amazed at how much your horse will try for you. So if your horse tells you that you are adding too much pressure, what should you do? Back off, stop, quit. Remember this principle; pressure motivates, it’s the release that teaches. I cannot stress enough, start as light as possible and go as firm as necessary. Horses learn in phases of pressure so don’t go light and then go directly to firm. Give your horse

some time to distinguish one phase of pressure from the other. Concentrate on holding each phase 3-4 seconds between pressure phases (4 phases) and hold the last one until the horse tries to do what you are asking the release immediately. This is a big subject and a lot more information but too much to put in an article. It would take a few chapters in a book to adequately explain and then it would be hard to be sure you understood. The best way is hands on for you to begin to understand these principles and concepts of pressure and release and how to apply it to teach your horse to be more responsive to your pressure cues.
