ously wish I could do that....but honestly, I’m having a problem giving up what the loss of youth seems to rob from us! I have had much experience following that “hunger of heart” that has led me to defy status quo. And in the doing of it, I have experienced the supernatural presence of God joining me. Not only that....I experienced His PLEASURE in doing so! God LOVES it when we invite Him into arenas OUTSIDE normality! What’s the use of being in a relationship with a supernatural God if we never allow Him to be Who He IS......SUPERNATURAL!??!!!

I

never seemed to want what was the “natural thing” for a girl to want. I always seemed to want something “other than”. It has led me on many adventures.....some good.....some I’d just as soon forget. But even now, I don’t want what is before me in the natural.

Old age.....weakened body.....loss of the expectancy of something super cool on the horizon. Fact is.....we simply were NOT meant to decay! We were created to never die, never grow old, never weaken, never be sick, etc. But our departure from the Creator waaaaaay back there in the Garden led us away from more than a paradise lifestyle, it led us away from LIFE itself.....or should I say life HIMSELF. I hear some people say, that they’re embracing old age and dang it....I seri-

...we simply were NOT meant to decay! We were created to never die, never grow old, never weaken, never be sick,...

I believe that this generation is one like none other before us. We are a generation that was born into an age where the miraculous will be unleashed full force!

The truth of God’s Word is that He wants ALL that He planned in the beginning to be COMPLETED here on earth! ALL!!

God NEVER changed His mind. The Devil didn’t pull something so huge that God

had to settle for plan B! The Bible tells us that God knew before He created the earth and all in it, what man would do and He made provision to bring it all full circle to total fulfillment of His original plan. Why else would Jesus tell us to pray....”Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”!

God WANTS us to believe Him for the ALL!!

Why not be like Peter, who stepped out of the boat?!! Leaving the crowd sitting securely in the natural, to step out and experience what God invited him to do...walk on water!! Some say he failed because he began to fear and started sinking. I say.....WOW!! He walked on water and when he was sinking, Jesus came to his aide and they walked on water TOGETHER back to the boat. I call that AWESOME!!

I don’t know what God may be stirring in your heart, but whatever it may be..... make sure it has the “fingerprint of God” on it and not just some crazy, selfishly cooked up desire of your own.....and if so, step out of the boat! I’ve stepped out before on a word from The Lord and always found that word more solid to stand on than what was in the “seen realm”. Bottom line? God is desiring to EXPOSE HIMSELF to this rebellious, blind world! We live in a world like Joshua and Caleb, where the majority simply can’t see beyond the negativity of the natural.

Literal millions may choose to die in that dry place....but if God can even find 2 who will trust Him to do the supernatural....

God will defeat giants through them!!!

Is Your Horse’s Head In The Game?

M

any years ago I lived right across the street from the national reined cow horse Hall of Fame member Tommy Sondgroff. I was a young horse trainer with a small stable trying to raise my young family. Tommy was gracious enough to give me some young horses to start and was always willing to help me with my horsemanship.

On one occasion, after delivering a young horse back to him, he made the following comment: “Richard, after a month you have these colts going really well. They can walk, trot, lope, stop, back up and move off your leg. That’s all great. However, you’re missing one thing. These colts are not soft in their face. When you pick up the reins, they don’t break at the pole and yield their heads back to your hands. That’s a missing piece in your program.”

I wasn’t immediately able to go out and fix that “missing piece” in my horsemanship program. However, 25 years later I now know exactly what he meant. Today head and neck control and having a horse soft in their face is a top priority in my training program and my horses early development.

If a horse will not stay soft in their face when you are guiding and directing them, you’re probably not going to like the feel of any maneuver you’re trying to perform. If a horse is stiff in his face and sticks his nose up and out, there’s a pretty good chance that he is also hollow in his back and not in an athletic frame. It’s all about developing a soft feel. It’s the ability for me to pick up on the reins and have my horse soften and come back to my hands saying, “Yes sir.

What can I do for you?” One of my mentors is fond of saying, “If a horse sticks his head above the saddle horn, all their brains run out into their neck and they can’t think!”

In my program, this all begins as my horse learns to back up. At first my horse just makes a connection to his feet and yields backwards when I pick up on the reins.

However, as time goes on I’m also looking for him to get soft, break at the pole and bring his nose to a vertical position to the ground. At this point, I find value in using my legs along with my hands to achieve this softness. Pressing and releasing with my legs in harmony with my hands helps my 14

horse to pick up his back and soften in his face as he yield backwards. When I have my young horse comfortably yielding his face in the back up, I’m now ready to ask for the soft feel with forward momentum.

When developing the soft feel with forward momentum it is important that you reward the slightest try and that you don’t get greedy with what you’re trying to achieve. When asking for beginning steps of what will ultimately be collection. I make the following promise to my horse. “Step forward into this bridle and give me your face. I promise I will give it back to you.”

To teach my horse the soft feel I hold with my hands and drive with my legs. At first it can be confusing for my horse as he feels like I am pushing on the brakes and the gas pedal at the same time. This is when you have to reward the slightest try. As I start my horse forward, if I feel the slightest softening and yielding in his face I immediately release and let him walk off on a loose rein.

Collection is a combination of vertical flexion with impulsion. We ask for vertical flexion with our hands and impulsion with our legs. Our hands slow down the front end while our legs speed up the hind end.

Some trainers refer to this as “driving the horse up into the bridle”. Imagine a stick. It is dead and lifeless. However, if you could put something in front of the stick to hold it and then begin to push the other end of the stick, it would begin to bow. Now you can put a string on this bow and shoot an arrow clear across the valley. The stick now has life and energy. This is what proper collection does. We soften the face, drive from behind and the horse’s back comes up in an athletic frame.

This all needs to begin at the slowest speeds. I would never ask for a soft feel and vertical flexion at the trot if my horse were not comfortable traveling in a collected frame at the walk. And of course I would never ask for collection at the lope if he had not mastered this maneuver at the walk and trot. It’s important to understand that being in frame and collected is physically and mentally fatiguing for a young horse. If you ask for too much too soon, they will get tired and frustrated and start bracing and

leaning on your hands. That soft feel that you were acquiring will quickly disappear.

How long will you need to work on developing this soft feel? The answer is forever. There will always be a tendency for your horse to be a little lazy and slip out of an athletic frame. Just like a human athlete, a coach needs to be there to insist on excellence and help the player become better than they would ever be on his or her own. If you’re looking for more refinement, collection and athleticism then it’s important that you get your “horse’s head in the game”.

More Leg, More Leg, More Leg….

It’s a trap!

W

hen seeking refinement and precision in our horsemanship, we desire a horse that is light and responsive to the leg aids. It takes seemingly no effort to guide them, control their energy, or position their body. However, we often see riders kicking and pushing their horses with their legs. We often hear trainers and instructors referring to a horse as “dead sided” or “dull”. This is really just an excuse for needing to “use more leg”, “kick harder,” “push more,” etc. That entire mindset is a trap. We need to use the horse’s natural sensitivity to our benefit, rather than hindering our horsemanship by using progressive desensitization to ultimately teach a horse to ignore leg aids.

Progressive desensitization, simply put, is the process of exposing the horse to a stimulus (in this case the leg) in increasing amounts without triggering a response. By riding with the idea of “more leg, more leg, and more leg” the rider does nothing more than desensitize the horse to the desired leg aids. We can’t make a horse light to the leg aids by using heavy leg aids. It’s as simple as that.

But how, then, do we teach a horse to respond to a light leg?

First, the rider must understand the difference between the primary aids and secondary aids. The PRIMARY AIDS are the aids of the body (in classical terminology, these would be referred to as the natural aids). In our recent article, The Ideal Ratio of Aids, we discussed SEAT as 80%, LOWER LEG as 18%, and HAND as 2% of our communication while riding – those are the primary aids. The SECONDARY AIDS are the tools such as the whip, crop, quirt, mecate, spur, or end of the rein (classically, these are referred to as the artificial aids).

Second, the rider must use the seat and leg to REQUEST and the whip to REINFORCE that request. We train the horse by teaching him that if he responds

when the seat and leg do THIS, then the whip won’t do THIS. Fairly quickly, the horse will start to focus on the primary aids and he will, in essence, teach the secondary aids not to come into play.

The rider should release the aids in the MOMENT the horse is ready to respond.

This rewards his effort. We preserve the sensitivity in the horse by allowing him to make the decision to respond to the primary aids and use secondary aids to reinforce the initial request.

A misunderstanding on your horse’s part would require SUPPORT from your secondary aids, NOT STRONGER primary aids. The moment we add more to the primary aids (the “more leg” mindset) the horse becomes dull. A well-timed secondary aid will enforce the efficacy of the primary aids and the result is a much more focused, attentive mount.

The rider is responsible for giving the signal with their aids, and the horse is responsible for making the change requested. Consistency is very important here in order for the horse to learn what is expected. Together, the rider and the horse are working to heighten the sensitivity to the primary aids to the point that the secondary aids become unnecessary.

Third, the rider must learn how to use the aids in conjunction with the horse’s footfalls. If we want him to move with more energy, we need to speak directly to his driving hind leg to increase the speed. Ideally, the rider will ask the horse to respond to the primary aid at the right moment in one stride, and then IF NECESSARY apply a secondary aid in that

next stride to support the initial request.

Finally, the rider must determine how light or responsive they would like the horse to be. I like horses to respond with a very light request from my seat and leg and I will ONLY use my seat and leg aids in that manner. If the horse does not respond, then I will reinforce with my secondary aids. I will always resist the temptation to use more leg or seat at any point.

A well-timed tickle from the lash on the end of a dressage whip is usually plenty of reinforcement to illicit a response.

Sometimes it is the subtlety that is surprisingly effective. If the horse is simply ignoring the leg aids altogether, then the rider may need to move beyond a tickle with the whip, which is appropriate so long as it helps the horse.

After several attempts, the horse will seek that subtle suggestion from the seat and leg aid.

Thus, the trap of “more leg, more leg, and more leg” can be avoided by thinking about better timing, more tact from the aids, and reinforcement when necessary.

Our horses will be thankful for the subtlety and clarity in our communication – and we will come closer to achieving the goals of precision and refinement in our horsemanship.

One of the main ways that a horse cools himself is by sweating and utilizing evaporation of sweat to dissipate body heat. In hot, humid conditions, however, the air is already damp, and sweat won’t evaporate.

The horse stays hot and the body keeps signaling for more sweating; the horse stays wet with sweat but doesn’t get any cooler. If the horse runs out of fluid due to excessive sweating, dehydration has occurred. A dehydrated horse is always at risk because he can no longer cool himself by sweating and his temperature will continue rising.

Signs of dehydration include: Mouth and gums that are dry, brick red or very pale. (Mucous membranes should be a healthy pink color. Now pry yourself away from this article and go check your horse or mule’s gums.)

Loss of skin elasticity – A pinch of skin pulled out from the neck or shoulder that does not spring right back into place, but instead, stays tented for several seconds is a sign of dehydration. If it takes 2 or 3 seconds for the skin to sink back into place, the horse is moderately dehydrated, if it stays elevated for 6 to 10 seconds or longer, he is severely dehydrated.

Poor capillary refill time – Press your finger into his gum and remove. If the spot stays white and pale for a few seconds meaning the blood doesn’t rush right back afterward, the horse is dehydrated.

Heart rate also increases as the horse’s body tries to get more blood to the surface for cooling, but has less body fluid to do it with.

Loss of fluid will also make the horse’s eyes seem to sink back into his head and his eyelids and tissues around the eyes appear wrinkled. Horses and mules exhibiting these symptoms should be rested, watered, and cooled.
