Evaluating Your Horse in Motion As part of our education we use a Horse Treadmill, Cameras and a simple dirt Track to evaluate before and after trimming and / or shoeing. As a farrier and horse owner, it is amazing how you can see up close and personal how the gait and conformation dictates the horses’ performance. As we film it, we can later review it in slow motion. GREAT education tool only located here. Farriers are self-employed American Made business owners ! Professional Farriers are Horsemen and woman first. We all work together.
Your horses are welcome for Evaluations most Saturdays by calling in advance.

MECHANICAL
or
RELATIONAL? by Crystal Lyons
It’s an awesome thing to learn how God wants us to operate. Scripture says in more than one place that God’s people are often destroyed because of a lack of knowledge. God WANTS us to know HOW to bring His good will for us into our situations of life. But KNOWING “how to” should NEVER trump being relational. For instance....someone wants prayer for an ailment in their body and you have learned to claim healing scriptures so you instantly start moving in the principles of what you’ve learned....never stopping to ASK The Lord what He wants to reveal about this situation. Without realizing it, we just placed mechanics OVER relationship. It’s wonderful and needful to learn principles, but there’s a danger to make principles a FORMULA. We LOVE our formulas don’t we!! Let me put this in horse and rider terms: You have a colt that you’re just starting on barrels. At first that colt is listening intently to all that you’re doing. Bending, yielding, pausing, changing leads....etc. After a while and the colt begins to recognize the pattern. THEN..... inevitably.....that colt that USED to rely on you telling him what to do goes, “ohhhhh, I got it!!” and starts running the pattern on their own, kinda turning a deaf ear to the instructions of his rider. Just because the colt has learned the basic barrel pattern does NOT negate the need for his rider!! He THINKS he knows what to do, but in reality, he can’t do it accurately without the one who taught him what he now knows!
Get it? We do that same thing with God! We NEED to learn! We MUST learn! But learning principles NEVER negates the need of listening to the Master! Principles were never meant to replace being RELATIONAL. No matter how much we know.....knowledge can never replace a daily friendship with the Creator. I’m beginning to realize how often I’ve been just like that half trained colt on barrels. I’ve waaaay too many times, grabbed the bit as I ran head on into a situation, thinking I know just what to do! “I got this God!” Yeah....right....what a dipstick! How often I’ve sweated over trying to figure out “how to get God to move” in a situation or how to find a “formula” that will release miracles into this earth’s atmosphere, instead of just wanting to hang out with Jesus and be His friend! Miracles will be an automatic result of friendship with God. We can also do the same thing when it comes to learning scripture. We MUST learn scripture, but as Graham Cooke so aptly said....”some people think God wrote a book and then lost His voice!” God still speaks!! To YOU!! Don’t simply learn scripture as a replacement for hearing His voice!! Relationship....friendship with God is THE most important thing we can develop! Don’t just grab the bit and run into the arena thinking you know the game.....allow the Supreme Wise One to hold the reins and direct your steps!

Are You And Your Horse PREPARED?
With Richard Winters Horsemanship
I ask this question because of two short video clips I recently watched on Facebook. Both of them involved a rider mounting their horse. Both of them ended in disaster. The first rider was seen quietly lunging his saddled horse around in a round pen. He then walked up to the horse, stepped on and was immediately, violently, bucked off. The second rider attempted to climb on his horse in a very small-enclosed area. This consisted of three panels put together in a triangle. There was barely enough room for the horse to turn around. However, there was still plenty of room to buck his rider off while crashing through the panels. Were these riders on “outlaw” horses? Was it simply their unlucky day? No. As I watched both videos, it was evident to me that neither of these riders had their horses prepared properly. It is true that you cannot prepare for everything with horses. There is an inherent risk in dealing with these animals. However, 90% of the wrecks that I’ve seen, or have been involved in, could have been avoided if there had been better preparation. What was the cause of crash? “Pilot error.” Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing your mount for a successful ride. 1. ASK YOURSELF: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THIS HORSE WAS RIDDEN. There are some horses that you can leave out in the pasture for weeks. You can pull them out and get on and it’s like you’ve never missed a day. These kinds of horses are the exception and not the rule. The longer it has been since the horse was ridden, the more diligent you should be in taking the time to warm them up properly before mounting. 2. DO THE MAJORITY OF YOUR GROUNDWORK AND WARMING UP WITH YOUR HORSE SADDLED. I see people make the mistake of spending a lot of time lunging their horse on the ground unsaddled. Then they saddle the horse, step on and get bucked off. If you need to work your horse on the ground before saddling, that’s fine. But you must continue to work your horse with the saddle on to truly have them prepared. 3. WHETHER YOU ARE LUNGING YOUR HORSE ON A LINE, OR FREE LUNGING THEM IN THE ROUND PEN, THEY MUST GO THROUGH THE FULL RANGE OF MOTION. That means you need to send your horse out at the walk, trot and lope. They also need to change directions with some energy and impulsion. The saddle on their back feels different at the trot than it does at the walk. It also feels different at the lope compared to trotting. And when your horse turns, pushes off and goes in another direction, it’s an entirely different sensation. 12

Diligent people prepare for the future. You might keep a blanket in your car this winter in case of a breakdown on the lonely stretch of highway. I have watched people in Florida board up windows in preparation for an oncoming hurricane. Good students take time to study and prepare for an up coming test. Here is my question for you: Are you and your horse prepared?
4. IS YOUR HORSE TRAVELING EFFICIENTLY? AS HE MOVES THROUGH THE FULL RANGE OF MOTION, IS HE PUTTING 50-POUNDS OF ENERGY INTO A 30-POUND JOB? If so, your horse is not prepared or ready for mounting. I want to observe my horse transitioning through all the gaits and directional changes relaxed and soft. As one horseman put it, “When their tail is in the air, keep your feet on the ground.” Whether it takes five minutes or twenty-five minutes, you need to take the time it takes to have your horse warmed up and thoroughly prepared. 5. CONSIDER YOUR ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS. When I conduct clinics I have had people tell me, “My horse doesn’t act like this at home.” I am convinced that is true. He’s not at home! Horses are creatures of habit and being outside of their familiar surroundings can be enough to in the least distract them, and at most have them buck you off. Also know that if it’s 40° and the wind is blowing twenty miles per hour, there is a chance your horse is not going to act as nice and gentle as he did on that warm quiet summer afternoon. This is only a partial list. It’s up to you to read your horses and know what it takes to have them prepared. Don’t let your mounting experience be the next to go viral on YouTube!

Western Dressage: TEST By Lynn Palm
The greatest advantage of the Western Dressage discipline is that you know what you have to do with each levels and test. It is not like going to a hunter show and having to learn the day of the show the course for Equitation or Hunter over fences, or a western show and having to learn the new trail or horsemanship patterns. So how do you know what level of test to show in and what do you expect to pre-enter a show? Here are my tips to know what level you need to show in and what you need to know about pre-entering. • Practice the tests at home and start with the first tests. Walk and trot. This is the best way to get your “feet wet” and compete with success and confidence. • If you have not shown in a good while and want to get back into it, find the level at which you and your horse do very well and can ride consistently. Then always start with the test 1, then go to test 2, then test 3. As the number of the tests get higher, the tests become more difficult. • Watch for soundness and willingness from your horse. Are his ears forward or working back and forth attentively? Is he confident and happy with his rider? • Is your horse relaxed in his overall body with his tail relaxed, swinging at the bottom, as opposed to swishing or wringing his tail? Is he confident and in a correct balance? • Is your horse responding to light aids? • Are you riding with your eyes focused far enough ahead so you can give your horse the communication to respond to you with smoothness, confidence, and accuracy? • Are you learning the level and test well enough that you don’t “feel lost” riding the test? This means that you are riding in a level that is suited for you and your horse. • Are you getting frustrated making the same mistakes? If so, go back a level or test. This is the beauty of Dressage. You stay at the level you are confident in and move up when you and your horse are ready. No pressures and please respect this. • If you and your horse are ready to move up a level and test, make sure that you still enter a lower test or level at the same show and day. This lower test will continue to build confidence and help you ride positively when you try your more advance test for the day or weekend.
LEVELS
Tips for Pre-Entering: • Find the show in the listing from USEF/USDF approved shows, or your local schooling show, though your horse clubs or associations. • All Dressage shows have pre-entries, at least two weeks ahead, so they can make the line up of times for each level, tests, and divisions of Jr., Amateur, or Open (Pro classes). • Contact the show secretary though the phone or email and make sure that you meet them at the show and thank them for all their good efforts to hold the competition • Upon entering your level and test, make sure that you enter the level you ride well and if you are ready to move up, enter the next higher level or test. • Meet the deadline of entries. Today you can do most entries online and with credit cards for convenience. However, if you mail the entries, make sure you send them to be received with a signature and tracking number. • When you get to the show, make sure after unloading your horse and tack, that you go to the show office and get checked in. You MUST have your numbers on everywhere at the show. If your horse is out of the stall, he must have the number on the halter or bridle. Meet your secretary; most shows will have a nice treat for your horse when you get there. I hope that these tips are helpful to you. Now get out there and show! You will love it and you will have so much fun. The shows are laid back so you have time to watch others and learn and get inspired. Make sure you make time to graze your horse, as this is a great way to give your horse a treat and get him out of the stall.

Trail Riding Tips
Time to Hit the Trails! Here’s a bit of advice in hopes to help you have fun and get out on the trails!
Get in Shape: Horse riding is a physical activity and your fitness is just as important as your horse’s. A rider who is in shape will not only be physically stronger but also have more stamina; is better balanced in the saddle; and will have the flexibility and suppleness that is required to move as one unit with the animal. Stop Procrastinating: When the days are short, cold, and dreary it’s entirely too easy for me to say I’ll work with the horses tomorrow. Tomorrow is generally a long time in coming and when it does finally arrive the ponies, and me, are in poor shape for a long trail ride.
Meet New People: Trail riding is in my humble opinion the most enjoyable of all equine activities, and riding with friends make it even more so. We’re all busy and it’s not easy to come across people with similar interests. I’ve found that my local Backcountry Horsemen organizations are wonderful places to meet people you may want to go riding with. The Backcountry Horsemen is an excellent organization full of wonderful people that can help you get out of the trails.
Be More Confident and Take Some Chances: Horses are large, can be unpredictable, and accidents do happen so our fears are not unfounded nor anything to be ashamed of. Overcoming these anxieties is doable if you give yourself permission to try, to fail, and then try again. I’ve found that taking riding lessons is a tremendous benefit and confidence booster. And finally, if you always avoid situations that make you uncomfortable (Remember that uncomfortable is different from dangerous.) you’ll never grow.
Be More Polite: Good manners have always been an important part of civilized societies. Be familiar with the etiquette of the trails and learn how to be a better user of the trails. Greeting hikers and bikers on the trail with a broad smile and a friendly “Howdy” is the best way to start a positive trail conversation. 22
Lee State Park – South Carolina Trailhead Coordinates: 34.20875, -80.19456 www.trailmeister.com/trails/lee-state-park/ Very mild winter temperatures in the 60’s greet riders and campers in this South Carolina State Park. An easy hour’s drive from South Carolina’s capital of Columbia, Lee is located about 100 miles inland from the coast, in the Sandhill region, amongst the remnants of ancient sand dunes left over from what used to be coastal beaches eons ago. An interesting aside about Lee is that it is one of only a few state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps built during the Great Depression. Camping at Lee is anything but primitive with 23 horse camping sites each with electrical and water connections as well as centrally located restrooms and shower facilities. Corral space is somewhat limited but highlines are allowed in camp. The twelve miles of trails at Lee are split between a dedicated equestrian trail and the main park road. The main horse trail is accessed from the show ring and stables and has multiple cut offs that provide options and allow for varied rides. With such a limited number of trail miles you might wonder why bother? The answer is simple; these are a magnificent twelve miles. Even the bit of roadside (Oh no!) riding along the Lynches River offers gorgeous sites and views as you mosey down the path parallel to the river. Likewise the dedicated horse trails wander through the beautiful forest of tall longleaf pines covering the sandy floor. As with many areas in the south while the winter temperatures are mild; the summer is hot, sticky, and has a tendency to be buggy as well.
