When There Are No Other Options by Crystal Lyons

I still had no answer but I “felt” to turn east on a highway out of Post that I had NEVER driven down in my life. Well.... what have I got to lose? I KNEW there was no open arena if I continued on my planned route, so.....if I can’t get where I need by knowledge.....why not try being led by a “feel” which HOPEFULLY was the Lord?! So....I turned east. About the time, my mind was taking back over as I’m driving through the black of night, second guessing my decision to turn down an unknown highway, an intersection ahead of me showed a farm to market blacktop going due south. I got that “feel” again to turn down it. Well, heck.....why not....I have no idea what I’m doing anyway and at the LEAST, it’s going in the correct direction!

Driving home from Colorado, I chose to make it to Post, Texas for the night, where there is an open arena. I arrived at Post around 11 pm....so sleepy and needing a break. I thought there must be a wreck up the road, but nope.....it was all the cop cars with lights blaring.... directing as the entire town it seemed was exiting off the rodeo grounds. I had arrived on the same weekend as their rodeo! Well NOW what do I do?? I can’t stay there and there’s no open arena that I know of south of where I was, for a few more hundred miles. I found an empty lot in town and unloaded Strider, allowing him to graze and walk around for awhile while the dogs played heartily in their joy of being released from the cab of the truck. During this time I was at a TOTAL LOSS as what to do. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stay awake much longer. (I’m NOT a road hoss that can drive all night). So, when all logical information fails you..... pray......right??

About the time I simply cannot keep my eyes open any longer I came to this little one horse town with absolutely nothing open and not a person stirring. There was a police station with lights on and a car parked outside so I decided to stop and just ask if there happened to be an open arena near. I was shocked (and relieved) to hear there was and only one block off the highway! I pulled to the backside of an arena that obviously hadn’t been used for rodeos in years but with great pipe fences. There happened to be a 30 amp plug exactly where I stopped but what was the chances of their being electricity to that? I tested it and it was hot!! As I’m unloading buckets and taking care of Strider while my trailer was getting cooled down inside I found myself doing the obvious.....thanking GOD for personally directing me through the night in totally unknown territory to very possibly the ONLY open arena within many miles! Smiling, I’m very aware that though what I was doing felt at the time like total lunacy, in actuality I was walking supernaturally/naturally! Someone said after hearing my story, that I was to be commended for listening to the Spirit. But I see it differently. It wasn’t until ALL my options where shot in the foot and I had no other ideas....totally empty of any useful information....I was FORCED to go by the Spirit. I would never have had the nerve to have done so if I’d had any other options. What an adventure! I want to learn to LIVE this way, but do so by practice.....not simply when I have run out of all other options.

The Hardest Trick To Train

A

nother question I get asked a lot is “What is the hardest trick to train?”. Well, there are many difficult tricks. Some take many steps and breakthroughs. The method to all my tricks are small achievable steps. This gets the horse to understand and to learn what is needed before we continue. Most horses will do tricks on their own, but to have a horse learn the steps it takes to get there and do it when you ask is the key. Now, in my opinion with all the horses I’ve taught, the hardest trick to teach is ground-tying or the “stay”. The reason it is so tough is the conditions of each “stay” changes. There are different distractions and lengths of time. To have your horse stand and say “whoa” is easy. To have your horse stand and stay while you walk away, around, and even leave their sight is a great trick. Most horses will stand for the whoa, but after a few moments will lose their train of thought and forget that they were told to stand and start wandering off or fall asleep and stop paying attention to you. The reason I call it a trick is that your horse when ground-tied should stand in a single spot until you cue them out of the trick. It could be 5 seconds or 5 minutes, you have to finish the trick. Your horse will start the trick and will now be waiting for the cue to stop standing still. That is why it is important to always cue out. Don’t let your horse just walk away when he feels like it. These steps by you will give your horse a reason to stand and wait for you until you give the command to stop standing still. When I ground tie my horses I want them to keep looking to me even if I walk out of sight. I want them to keep thinking and listening for my cue. The reason this trick is so hard is that it takes time and discipline on my part. If I want my horse to stand for 5 minutes and in 4 minutes and 58 seconds he walks away, I have to put him back in his spot and now make him do it again until I tell cue him out of it. You have to build up to it as well. I start with small steps, say ten seconds then build up each time longer and longer until they understand that time is not important, it’s my release that’s important. The best way to start this is on a young horse after a training session on Tommie Mack Turvey II www.tommieturvey.com the way back to their stall. They can’t wait to get back to their stall, so this teaches O: (470) 239-0313 them that if they listen to me they get their quicker. If they don’t listen to me, I C: (916) 943-6067 tommieturvey@gmail.com correct them, back them up and do it again. Remember, to get the most out of horses you need to make the right way easy and the wrong way hard. WESTERN DRESSAGE:

Overcoming Nerves

By Lynn Palm

“I really want to show, but I just get so nervous and insecure when I’m the only one in the ring performing with my horse. How can I overcome this?” This is a great subject and something I hear often from riders, so I feel it deserves to be addressed in an article. Anxiety and nervousness affect riders at all skill levels, but this doesn’t have to hold you back. Anyone can learn how to be successful even if they are nervous at times. Nervousness comes from negative thinking and will always challenge your confidence. If you can learn how to think positively, you can overcome your nervousness by replacing it with a confident attitude and approach. If you are nervous because you are uncertain about your ability, this will change as you improve and become more competent at the various maneuvers. Here are three ways to conquer nerves in the show ring: #1 HAVE A CALLER IN THE RING I’ve found one of the best ways to help you feel more confident is having someone go in the ring with you and call out your test. Make sure that you practice with your caller at home before your show. This way you will feel comfortable with their voice and the timing when calling out maneuvers. After you get some shows under your belt, I suggest that you learn the test and ride it without a caller, but this is a great first step for building confidence.

#2 DO YOUR HOMEWORK Learn to how to concentrate on both yourself and your horse. You need to master each segment of the test. Practice at home and during your warm up before you compete. I also suggest that you take a blank piece of paper and write each component of the test. Then, next to each component write down the aids that you are going to use for each figure or transition. You will notice remarks like gait quality, willingness, straightness and balance next to the corresponding movements. Make some personal comments that you are going to remember. For example, movement one has you enter, halt, salute and proceed. Perhaps you could write in the corresponding comments box: “Look up at the judge, breathe, smile, prepare for halt with half halt, crisp trot, flexion to prepare for turn at C.” Pick two or three tips that are most suited to what you need to remember for each movement. This is a great process for anyone because it challenges you to ride your horse better in or out of the show ring. You already know that when you ride better, it allows your nerves settle and builds your confidence. #3 WALK YOUR TEST AT THE SHOW When the arena is available, go in the ring and walk your test without your horse. Go through each maneuver mentally as you walk it. This is the best tip that I learned from my friend, Jane Savoie, regarding how to improve the accuracy of the test and to gain confidence. If you still feel the flutter of nerves before you go into the ring on show day, remind yourself that the judge wants you to do well. If you have any challenges, just remember to work through them positively. Keep riding ahead, as you can’t do anything about what happened during your previous ride, or even 30 seconds ago. Also, remember that your horse knows every word you are thinking! Be confident and turn any negative thoughts into positive ones. Jane Savoie has written a great book, “That Winning Feeling,” which I highly recommend. When you visit our websites at www.lynnpalm.com and www.shoplynnpalm. com , you’ll find plenty of helpful learning materials and information, including Dressage Illustrated books. You can follow along with what I suggest for both English dressage and Western dressage.

Deadly Sins of Trail Riding

Trail Riding Tips

By Robert Eversole

I may not attend church as often as I should, but I still remember many of the concepts. For example, the Seven Deadly Sins. Anyone that spends time with equines knows that these ideas make sense whether we’re in church or on the trail. Here are my seven sins of trail riding. GLUTTONY - Don’t expect a green, unconditioned horse to carry you for miles and miles down a trail. The word derives from the Latin “gluttire”, meaning to gulp down and has been interpreted as selfishness; essentially placing concern with one’s own impulses or interests above the wellbeing or interests of others. In this case, the well-being of our horses and mules. Your horse needs to be in good physical condition, especially if you plan to embark on demanding trail-riding adventures. You’ll need to slowly work up to the demands an all-day ride over varied terrain will place on your equine friend. GREED – Avoid riding when your horse’s hooves will damage the trail. Also, known as avarice, greed is a sin of desire. I love riding and the itch to put a boot in the stirrup is a strong one. Sometimes it needs to be tempered. It’s true, horses and mules are designed to cope with wet, muddy trails. But those broad hooves can leave the trails a lot worse for wear, especially during the late spring freeze/ thaw cycle. Spring runoff can leave trails waterlogged and vulnerable to damage from trail users. This doesn’t mean that you should hang up your saddle until Memorial Day. It only means that you’ll have to think of alternatives to sodden, single-track trails. SLOTH - Don’t litter. From the Latin “acedia” which translates as without care 22

and refers to laziness, indolence, and idleness. If you managed to carry it out with you, you can carry it back with you. Litter damages the environment, harms wildlife, and leaving it behind is just lazy and inconsiderate. Put it in your bag, then put it in the bin or recycling when you get back home or to the trail head. Oh yea – pick up your manure at the trailhead! PRIDE – Please wear a helmet. From the Latin “superbia”, pride has been labelled the father of all sins. There are many excuses for not wearing riding helmets. Yet research has repeatedly shown that a properly fitted, safety-approved riding helmet can drastically reduce the risk of head injury. For you “experienced riders” who don’t need a helmet; a Canadian study found that injured riders had an average of 27 years of experience. New riders were safer, perhaps because they were more cautious. WRATH – Don’t be rude. Anger or “ira” from Latin is an intense emotional response to a perceived provocation, hurt or threat. Remember that bicyclist that came charging behind you, nearly face planted into the back of your horse, then whipped past on a narrow section of trail? Not nice, was it? What was your response? Did you explain why that wasn’t safe, or did you get angry because you were afraid? Yoda said it well with “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” Eye contact, a friendly hello. You can even ask how their walk or ride is going! I guarantee you’ll leave the situation feeling better for it.

write a lot about the harder parts of trail riding and horse camping. In part I do that because I think it’s important to show the real nitty –gritty aspects of being on the trail and camping with our horses and mules – You know as a counter to all of the perfectly curated Instagram feed out there. But in that pursuit sometimes I forget that trail riding isn’t all navigation skills and conditioning. As hard as it can be, trail riding is also really fun. Yes, there’s some risk but instead of being the kind of risk that leaves you frozen in terror, it feels like the moment when you step on a plane to go somewhere you’ve never been before. LUST – Inconsistency. St. Augustine equated lust as “disordered love”. With horses that disordered love can take the form of inconsistency where we send our animals mixed messages. Indeed, some horses receive training that is consistent enough in its inconsistency that they recognize that different rules apply in different surroundings. Most do not. Remember that every time you swing your leg over your horse, you are training him. You are either training him well or training him badly, but you are nevertheless training him. It’s not just a trail ride. Ride safe. Ride Often. Ride with TrailMeister.com!

DESPAIR - Don’t forget to have fun. From the Latin “tristitia”, despair is a state of low mood and aversion to activity. I VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 9 2017
