CHOMPING AT THE BIT

Don’t you just hate knowing that something is supposed to shift in your life but you can’t seem to see it or recognize how? For me anyway, the patience needed to keep being steady in what you know to do until you KNOW to do something different is HARD! I understand that if we want a different outcome, we must do something to affect it, but I’ve jumped off the cliff before so to speak and THEN recognized that there was no net under me. Bad move!

Moses knew he was to be the deliverer of the Jewish nation but it was HARD watching the people suffer while he did nothing to help. So, he boldly made a move one day and ended up killing an Egyptian. This caused him to have to run for his life and the delivery business was held back for another 40 years while Moses learned hard lessons in the desert.

I actually don’t know how many times the Bible says to “wait on the Lord”.....but it’s a BUNCH. And have you noticed how the Word never says to “hurry”? I don’t know about you but that goes exactly OPPOSITE of my personality.

A few weeks ago I was at a Horse Fair in Iowa and was in line to showcase my stallion, Strider. I was to be last to go into the arena. Time came and the horse that was supposed to go in first wasn’t there. So everyone is put on hold. Five minutes....10 minutes.....I’m so blasted antsy I can hardly stand it! You do NOT do this at a rodeo!!! I’m thinking the crowd inside is going to leave if something doesn’t HAPPEN! Finally...here comes the guy on the Friesian who’s to be first.....and..... there he goes, riding on by! I can’t believe what I’m seeing! He’s out there, tweaking on his horse while the whole show WAITS on him! So....

OBVIOUSLY it’s up to me to make something happen, right?!! I rode into the entrance to see if I could catch the announcer’s attention, but as I did, the announcer seeing me started announcing Strider! I jerked my coat off and jumped down because I was bareback and had a plan to show Strider off by leading him in and then mounting him after laying him down in the arena.

So I’m in the process of my plan and the lady at the let out gate lets the guy on the Friesian IN! Now there’s TWO STALLIONS in the arena and Strider isn’t about to lay down while another stallion is prancing around him. So suffice it to say my showcasing Strider quickly circled the toilet.

All because for whatever reason I think the WHOLE SHOW rests on my shoulders!!! What’s up with that?? I have a friend who has a saying that I

would have done WELL to have rehearsed in my mind while waiting out back. “It’s NOT my circus and these are NOT my monkeys!”

If the show succeeded or failed....it was NOT my responsibility!! Someone being rudely unconcerned about holding everyone up was (say it again) “NOT my responsibility!” I jumped ahead simply because nothing was moving so I counteracted by making a move of my own. WHEN am I going to learn to simply BE STILL & WAIT? That was just a 2 minute stallion revue.

If I can learn a lesson in life at the cost of a humiliating 2 minutes, that’s a pretty good return don’t you think? So let me practice this one more time: “It’s not my circus and these are NOT my monkeys!”

The

Winning Horse

From the Farriers’ National Research Center & School, La Fayette, Georgia 1988 we began an all-out study, on not just sound shoeing, but maintaining the sound horse to allow him to perform at his peak. Horse owners began bringing us their horses to evaluate. Many at one time had the chance to be champions whether it be in cutting, running barrels, hunter jumper events, racing, and on and on. In our evaluations, we would discover that the most important part of the horse had been overlooked and neglected. These horses had received too many improper trims! And further evaluations showed that neither the amateur person trimming, nor the owner knew what they were trying to achieve with each trim or shoeing their particular horse.

The hoof carries the entire weight of the horse. So, it must be perfectly balanced, or as close as humanly possible, just like an athlete would require achieving their maximum performance. “Balance” has been mis used in many forms in our industry. Many horse owners become offended when we tell them that everything, they do is important to the hoof and they discover they did not know quite as much about their horse as they thought they did. So, we started hosting clinics at the FNRC and offering valuable information for owners otherwise not available from any other “hands-on resource.”

Whether training a champion or gentle trail horse for the kids, everything comes into play, from lunging correctly, proper saddle fit, feeding and nutrition. There is more to the science of shoeing than flattening the foot, nailing the shoe on and making it look pretty. Improper trimming and shoeing will eventually cause the bony structure to become out of alignment. The horse will be sore due to the unbalanced toe, heel and leg lengths. This right here is the most common and most serious problem occurring to horses today. As we have said before, the main reason for shoeing the horse is; “to keep the bony column of the leg in alignment, wherein, when the foot strikes the ground, the entire bony column, including the spine, equally absorbs the concussion.” This is the basis of our evaluations and studies here at the Farriers’ National Research Center and School.

To achieve this goal, we must start from square one, by properly feeding the broodmare, then properly feeding the newborn then on to evaluating and properly trimming the youngster. The entire bony structure of this newborn is growing rapidly and to alter it’s body by improper trims or neglect trimming altogether will create big problems down the road. And there are thousands of youngsters who never see a farrier until the owner wants a set of shoes around two years old. This too is by far one of the most common problems seen in horses today.

Our moto is: The Farrier is the most important equine professional for the overall health of the horse in the equine industry. It is very important for horse owners to seek out the education about the farriers’ job and the maintenance plan suggested to keep a horse sound and healthy. Since 2002, horse owners have been fortunate to have access to the only farrier research center in the U.S. dedicated to studying farrier science operated by caring horse owners and farriers. We continue to share this education in courses and clinics for owners and one of the first ongoing continuing education programs available for farriers.

Horse Owners are welcome to bring their horses to the FNRC for their trimming and shoeing needs and watch, listen and learn about their own horses while the farriers do their work. Lots of conversations, demonstration, explanations with YOUR Horse in an educational environment. Farriers are normally horse owners first who want to find a better farrier in their area, provide the right care for their own herd and enjoy it so much, make a profession of it. TRAILER INSULATION

Insulation is one of the first steps in any diy build, and it’s also one of the most misunderstood. There’s a lot of misconceptions about trailer insulation, and people end up wasting money and time on unnecessary steps and products.

When we were building our trailer we had all kinds of questions about insulation: What’s the best material to use? How do we install it? Do I need a vapor barrier? What questions do I not know enough to ask?

So what is the best way to insulate a diy horse trailer? Below, we’ll go over how heat is transferred and how to stop it; discuss everything you need to know about insulation, the different products out there, and how best to use them.

There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Radiation is heat that can be transferred through the air or a vacuum – Think of the warm sunlight that comes through your windows on a sunny day.

It’s very nice in winter but miserable in the summer.

In a trailer, radiation occurs mostly through the windows. If you park your trailer with large windows in direct sunlight, the inside will heat up quickly. This is because radiant heat transfers easily through glass. Combat radiation heat by parking in the shade or extending your awning.

Convection is heat transferred through the natural movement of liquids and gasses. This is due to liquids and gasses being different densities and temperatures. In a nutshell, hot air is less dense than cold air so it rises which is why the nose of gooseneck trailer gets so hot in the afternoon. Combat convection by adding a ventilation fan to suck out the warm air near the ceiling while pulling in cooler air from a cracked window.

Conduction is heat transferred through a solid material. The metal skin and framing of your trailer walls are excellent conductors of heat. Without any insulation, a trailer sitting directly in the sun heats up fast. The inside metal can be too hot to touch because the heat is transferred very efficiently through the outside walls. Combat conduction by insulating the inside of your trailer to stop your trailer from conducting the sun’s heat inside during the summer and help prevent heat loss through conduction during the winter.

Insulation: Insulation slows the rate of heat transfer into and out of your trailer, which makes it easier to maintain the temperature you want. A properly insulated trailer is easier to heat and cool. It won’t heat up as quickly in the summer, and stays warmer in cool weather.

Every insulation material has an R-value, which is a measure of the material’s Resistance to heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the better the ability to resist heat transfer via conduction.

Different materials have different levels of conduction. In general, the more porous a material is, the less it conducts heat because air is a poor conductor.

Example: If you hold a metal bucket full of ice, it will quickly draw the heat out of your hands. If you hold a foam bucket full of ice, the heat will stay in your hands.

Nothing resists conduction better than

a vacuum; this is why vacuum insulated mugs work so well.

A thermal bridge is an area that has greater thermal conductivity than the materials around it, providing an opportunity for heat to pass through.

When you place insulation between

your trailer’s frame ribs but don’t do anything to the ribs themselves, the frame then becomes a thermal bridge.

Heat can conduct inside the trailer through the exposed frame much more easily than it can through the insulated areas. This thermal bridge reduces the overall effectiveness of your insulation, since heat and cold can easily go around it.

Insulating on the top of your trailer’s hollow frame ribs can reduce the effect of thermal bridging.

These thermal breaks, are basically nonconductive materials (i.e. insulation) placed in the pathway of a thermal bridge to block the flow of heat. NOTE: HVAC tape is not insulation.

While an insulated trailer with some thermal bridging is more resistant to heat transfer than a trailer with no insulation at all we’re embarking on this project to do as good a job as we can.

heat transfer works, let’s take a look at the insulation materials we can use to slow it down.

While there are a lot of options out there, not all of them are good choices for insulating your trailer. Good trailer insulation needs to have the following: High R-value per inch. Space is at a premium inside a trailer, and you want to insulate with materials that will do the most in the least amount of space.

Bang for your buck. There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars insulating your trailer. Some materials may work well, but cost more than your trailer did.

The best insulation materials do their job effectively and are friendly to your wallet.

Able to withstand vibration. Unless you’ve got your trailer up on blocks, you’re probably hauling it all over the place. Traveling causes lots of vibrations inside your trailer, and your insulation needs to be able to take it without falling apart.

Resistance to moisture, mold, and mildew. Either the material is impervious to moisture (like rigid foam board or spray foam) or has moisture control properties and natural mold resistance (like Thinsulate or sheep’s wool).

environmentally-friendly way.

What we used in our trailer: Extruded polystyrene (XPS) is a type of rigid foam board insulation that’s widely available. You’ll recognize it as the big pink or blue foam sheets at the hardware store. XPS has a very good R-value per inch at R-5, and is impermeable to moisture. Another benefit is its high compressive strength, making it perfect for floor insulation.

What we should have used: Polyisocyanurate is another rigid foam board insulation. It typically comes foilfaced on one side, which both acts as an effective vapor barrier and provides a radiant heat barrier if you install it with an air gap. Polyiso is completely non-toxic and doesn’t off-gas anything harmful.

It’s also much more environmentally friendly and has a slightly better R-value per inch than XPS foam board. It is a little more expensive and my local hardware store didn’t carry it.

What you never want to use: Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is another type of foam board insulation. It’s basically the same as the stuff in your Styrofoam cooler. EPS is super cheap and is a good insulator. But it contains a lot of air gaps that allow moisture to penetrate, which degrade the material over time. It also won’t stand up to vibration as well as polyiso or XPS, and isn’t nearly as durable.

Insulation Steps by the Numbers:

1. Insulate walls, ceiling, and floor with foam board 2. Fill gaps with spray foam 3. Cover all exposed aluminum ribs with thermal break – We used ¼ inch fanfold sheathing insulation 4. Seal seams with HVAC tape to create moisture barrier 5. Attach 1x3 wooden furring strips to ribs to create a solid base for the ¼“ plywood sheet walls and channels for electrical wiring And there you have it! A fully-insulated trailer!

Now you’re ready to head up to Alaska in December, or haul down to Arizona in August. Well, maybe not. No matter how well-insulated your van is, it’s still a good idea to follow the weather you want. While insulation does make the inside of your van more comfortable, horse camping isn’t about staying in your trailer - it’s about getting out there and enjoying the world on your horse!

PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ Building a Partnership with Your Horse

Aids Communication: THE SEAT I am going to discuss one of the rider’s most important, yet often, overlooked aids. Can you guess which one it is? If you said the rider’s SEAT, you’re right!

I will explain how the rider uses her seat by using the example of upward and downward transitions. As the rider puts weight in the saddle, the rotation and movement of her hips gives the horse the indication to go forward. When this rotation and movement decreases, it signals the horse to slow or stop. Let me explain how this works using simple exercises you can use at home to improve communication using your seat.

Walk-Jog/Trot Transitions Using The Seat The goal of this exercise is to use your seat, rather than hand or leg aids, to signal requests for upward and downward transitions from walk to trot. Start by asking your horse to walk forward on a large circle. Gently follow his movement with your hips as he walks forward.

Prepare for an upward transition to the jog/trot using your seat as the main tool for communicating to the horse. Do this by first putting more weight in your seat. As you do, rotate your hips to follow the horse’s movement and encourage to him to increase his speed through the action of your seat. Support this action by lightly applying leg aids (if needed) and slightly releasing the reins to encourage his forward movement. If needed, reinforce your requests with a “cluck”. He should pick up the jog/trot. Continue following his motion with your seat.

Jog/trot a segment of the large circle. Then turn him to make a smaller circle within the large one. We will use the smaller circle to ask him to for a downward transition back to the walk. Jog/trot a portion of the small circle and prepare for a downward transition using the seat. Once again put weight in your seat, but this time decrease the movement and rotation of your hips with the horse’s movement. He should make a transition from jog/trot to the walk in response to your seat aid. Praise him. Do this exercise in both directions. As you practice this exercise, your seat aid will become more effective and your horse more responsive. You’ll notice that less leg and voice aids are necessary to achieve the transitions.

Jog-Lope/Trot-Canter Transitions Using the Seat When the horse is comfortable and understands the aids communication you are giving him for the walk-jog/trot transition, it is

time to try a jog to lope/ trot to canter transition.

This exercise should be done in a large fenced paddock or pasture. Be sure the horse is warmed up before starting this exercise.

Repeat the walk-jog/trot transition exercise (above) to reinforce the effectiveness of your seat, leg, and hand aids.

The exercise starts with trotting the horse on a large circle. The rider should post to the trot even if using a western saddle. Encourage the horse to depart into the canter by using the word command “CANTER” (he should have already learned this voice command from ground training on the longe line, liberty, or round pen). At the same time use seat and leg aids to encourage him to move forward into the canter.

Keep a loose contact on the reins, lightly positioning him on the arc of the circle. Continue following his motion with your seat while posting as he increases his speed and makes a transition to the lope/canter. At his point, it is not important which lead he takes, just that he canters.

When he begins loping/cantering, sit and follow the rocking motion of the gait with your seat and hips to encourage him to continue cantering.

Your Next Step…

Most often when a horse has problem picking up the correct lead, the rider is not maintaining the proper form and balance. When the horse has problems, the rider is not properly controlling his body position during jog-lope/trot-canter transitions. To achieve this requires an understanding of the rider’s turning aids. Before I can go into more details about perfecting transitions, refer to my previous articles on turning aids and how they are used to position the horse. It will help you improve your transitions and may change your riding forever!
