Don’t Play Another’s Game! Any competitor knows that at least 50% of the game, if not more, is mental. It doesn’t matter how good a person CAN do....if their mind is not in the game..... victory can easily be lost. I’ve heard stories about some competitors who were pro’s at getting people off their game simply by messing with their mind. Knowing a person’s “buttons” and pushing them. I was told of a roper who was a master at making everyone so mad at him that they would get their mind OFF of doing the basics and instead start concentrating on beating him! And in doing so....they wouldn’t play their own game, while he would stick to his.....and win! I seem to never tire of hearing the story about Martha Josey winning the world title and R.E. telling her before the 10th round at the NFR, that all she had to do was to NOT hit a barrel and the world title was hers. He told her to play it safe, don’t push, because her time didn’t matter.....just DON’T HIT A BARREL! When Martha’s time came to run, she barreled down the alley way, balls to the wall. R.E. was FUMING! Martha won that round and won the world title that year and when asked WHY she threw caution to the wind when she had it won if she’d simply safetied up.....she said she had practiced ONE WAY all year long and she KNEW that if she tried running a different way other than all out..... she’d screw it up. She was right! What if she had gone into the arena thinking one thought....”just don’t hit a barrel....don’t hit a barrel”.....what do you think would’ve happened? I figure she would’ve hit a barrel and in doing so, lost the world title that year. The devil is a MASTER at getting into our heads and thus getting us off our “game”. He did it in the garden and to

this day he continues to try to knock us off balance and keep us from being a threat to his plans. But if we will stick to a winning game plan, we can defeat him! God has a wonderful plan for your life! Even if you’ve screwed it up badly..... God has never once wrung His hands in worry over how to redeem your situation. If a person WANTS to know and obey God’s plan and will for their life, they need only to seek to KNOW HIM and learn His ways and recognize His voice. It’s not that hard. It’s simply a relationship. Let Him have access into your thoughts, your day, your motives, your dreams.....and before you know it.....you will be walking through life with a confidence in His wisdom, His protection, His provision and direction. And let me tell you for sure.....His “game plan” WORKS!!

So, how does the devil get into our heads and off our game? By injecting worry and us taking the bait. By motivating us through greed or selfishness. By FEAR. Any of these things, (and more) can take us out of our playing field and onto his....and you can’t beat the devil on his own field. Shifting us out of trust into worry....out of forgiveness into resentment.....out of integrity and into compromise, etc. Stick to the game plan that has been tested down through the ages! God’s Word and His ways WORK!! Don’t let something or someone pull you out of position and cause you to forfeit a win that God has planned for you!

Road to the Horse With Richard Winters Interview by Angelea Kelly

“Well this year, my participation as a competitor, has not gone unnoticed. I am the old man in the group.” -Richard Winters. It was still early on a bright Texas morning the first of March and Richard Winters has already been hard at work. He unhitched his horse trailer and took a break to sit down to talk with me about his upcoming bid for the Road to the Horse colt starting championship. This critically acclaimed horseman, author, clinician, TV personality, and competitor is an honest and humble representation of what all modern day cowboys and true horsemen should aspire to be. Tell me about your history with Road to the Horse? I was a competitor at Road to the Horse in 2009. It was an honor to be invited to compete against John Lyons and Tommy Garland. I was fortunate to win that event. Since that time, I’ve been associated with the event as their Horseman’s Host and Commentator. I was there on the floor clueing the audience

Road to the Horse in to the minute intricacies and subtle things that they might miss. Since I was a contestant I have been able to share those things with the audience. It’s been great these last few years to continue to be involved with Road to the Horse. 10

So you commentated from 2010-2015. What did you most enjoy about that experience? I think the best thing about commentating is I have the best seat in the house. I am right there in the middle of it. I learn more than anybody else there because I’m watching 3 or 4 great horseman do some phenomenal things with horses. What is it like to prepare as a competitor for Road to the Horse? Well this year, returning as a competitor, has not gone unnoticed. I am the old man in the group. We think of colt starting as being a young man’s game. Clinton Anderson and Nick Dowers are two young men who are very, very talented. I’ll need to work smarter rather than harder. I am trying to stay in shape physically. I’ve been starting some colts these last few weeks just trying to get my head back around the colt starting process. In all reality - don’t tell the other guys, I don’t really start that many colts anymore. I’m gonna get in there and just try to keep up. It’s the day of. You’re at Road to the Horse on the floor. What’s it actually like being there? I’ve heard it time and again from contestants that with all of the fanfare, all of the preliminary things that go on, all of the grand entries and the mini clinics that you do there, by the time you step in for round #1 and your colt is in the round pen, you just can’t hardly wait to get in there and get to work. Everything else has been the preamble. All three competitors will just be very anxious to turn the microphone off, get in the round pen and get to work. I heard you have a new book published by Western Horsemen debuting at Road to the Horse. What is it about? I was this little 12-year-old kid when I first

Road to the Horse got a subscription to Western Horsemen and never missed a month in the last 40 years. To now think that they are publishing a book with that same little kid is an honor. This book is going to be different than what other horsemen have done in the past. It’s called From Rider to Horseman and it’s laid out in chapters where each one is a stand alone chapter. Say that you’re interested in sidepassing. You can go right to that chapter, read the chapter, see the beautiful photographs on side-passing, and then go out to work with your horse. You can invest 20 minutes with the book and then go out and get to work with your horse. I’ll be signing books at Road to the Horse. Finally, you’re a Fly Predator fan and use Bye Bye Odor also, no? Yes. Absolutely. For the last several years we’ve been using the Fly Predators and the Bye Bye Odor and those products work well on our ranch. What is your favorite use for Bye Bye Odor? My wife and I like it the best in our living quarters horse trailer. When we’re out on the road for months at a time, I’ll use it back in the stall area. Horses are in the trailer for hours at a time and I try to keep it cleaned out but it still has a smell to it. I’ll spray down the back of the trailer to get rid of it. Our little dog - although he is great – he rarely ever makes a mistake. But when he does, out comes the Bye Bye Odor and we’ll clean up his mess using some of that. Open Show Judges, a Vanishing Breed? A

re true all-breed judges vanishing? Almost every given weekend you can find an open saddle club horse show in towns across America. At 80% of these shows you’ll find a single breed/discipline judge. 40 years ago this was not the case. What has happened to open show judges? In the past a person would utilize their horse in different classes – all-around horse. Over the years more and more people have gone to one breed/discipline. This has affected the quality and quantity of the Open Horse Show judge. Yes, you can find judges in your area who claim to be an open show judge, but are they truly proficient in all breeds and disciplines at your show? It is easy to go online, take a test and obtain your open judges card. But that card does not give them the knowledge to judge every discipline at your show.

Having grown up showing Saddlebreds, Hunters, then eventually Western and Ranch, my experience is geared to judging open shows. Coaching, attending seminars, being tutored have kept me up to date on rules and trends. I am also showing locally on the local open show circuit, and I want to be judged fairly! I constantly see exhibitors and their horses being poorly judged – the passion, time and expense – wasted. Exhibitors need to let the show management know if they are judged by a judge who is not knowledgeable and proficient in their breed and discipline. Lastly, to the Judges and those who want to become a judge – there is a world of information at your fingertips! Shadow a knowledgeable judge. The bottom line…be honest – judge the disciplines and breeds you truly know, open horse shows deserve the best! Judge Vaden is available to shadow and will hold a Judge’s clinic in November. Such a Popular

New Discipline?

This article really begins with a story. In 1997, I tried to upgrade my business of training and competing with horses in multiple disciplines into something else by changing my approach to basic training. I tried to use the term “Dressage Principles” as a basis for Palm Partnership Training’s teaching and education guidelines. Using the word “dressage” hurt our educational merit in the beginning. I would have people come up to me at horse expos, and write letters, emails, and Facebook messages noting that they were Western riders and “didn’t do” dressage. Others said that dressage is too difficult to ride, and they could never achieve it. People would even make comments saying, “I am a trail rider, and I don’t ride dressage!” Hearing this over and over made Cyril, Marie-Frances and me all agree we shouldn’t use the term “Dressage Principles” as a basis for our training and teaching methods at that time. So we didn’t. Ironically, 15 years later people started coming to us and saying things like, “We take dressage lessons and ride western!” and “I want to learn dressage because I know it is going to make me a better rider for my horse.” We agree it wasn’t the right time back then to introduce such a strong term, but now it is part of the Palm Partnership Training fundamentals. Dressage principles truly allow you to

become the best partner for your horse! I am truly blessed to have dressage as my first influence in riding and training horses. Cyril also learned dressage as his basis for riding. Cyril is from Europe where dressage is taught to all riders before they advance to jumping or 3-day event riding. “Dressage” is a French word that means “training” a horse. It is the TRUE natural horsemanship of riding and training a horse, because it allows us to truly understand what the horse is telling us and how to tell the horse what we want. These are the main reasons why western riders are so excited about this new discipline. They are realizing all the natural horsemanship techniques that we Americans are coming up with are both good and bad. However, we should also follow the dressage principles of classical dressage because it has already proven successful for centuries. When I learned to ride in the dressage saddle, I would go home and ride Western the same way. NO difference! It really works! Western riders are looking to train a willing horse and not train through submission. Harmony with the horse is what horse owners want whether they are a recreational rider or show ring competitor. This is the beauty of western dressage and why it is going to grow and become even more popular. The best part of western dressage is that it is helps people learn the correct ethics of horsemanship and how to train

a willing horse. The bottom line is that people want to learn more about correct riding and training. Dressage will give you the tools to achieve this correctness. It is all in following the Training Pyramid and the dressage levels. There are western dressage tests you can access at http:// westerndressageassociation.org/. The perfect way to learn is to practice these tests. Western dressage is for all breeds of horses. It is for the first-time horse owner and for the owner who has had horses all his/her life. I love to hear horse owners say, “the more I ride and learn the more I realize how much more I don’t know!” Dressage will fill that gap and give you inspiration. Whatever you do with your horse, the basic principles still apply. What is it you want to do with your horse? 98% of horse owners want to simply enjoy them, trail ridding, safely. The other 2% want to do eventing; Hunter Jumper; Dressage; Barrel Racing; etc Whatever it is, whatever you want your horse to learn, there are basic principles, concepts the horse should know. Think of it this way. When you build a building, there has to be a good foundation to start with or the building will fall or crumble. All good construction has a good foundation. After, and only after, the firm foundation is set does the construction begins. Right? Right! Makes sense to me. As long as the foundation is good the building will stand. Well, it’s the same with horses. Build that good foundation and then you can go and do whatever it is you want to specialize in. That specialty is determined by the horses ability. A Drat Horse would make a good barrel racer but it will make a good pulling horse. Every horse has a special ability. But even if you are simply creating a trail horse, you still need that foundation. “Pressure and Release” It’s simple really. When you want the horse to move simply apply pressure. When the horse moves the direction you asked, release the pressure. The pressure can be physical, mental or audible. The pressure causes the movement. I’ve told my students, clinic and seminar attendees and my radio audience, it’s the release from the pressure where the horse learns. If what he is doing gets you to stop asking then THAT is what he’ll learn to do. As simple as that sounds, it is actually a very powerful horse teaching principle/ concept. If not the Most Powerful. The horse doesn’t know what’s right or wrong. So you have to keep up the pressure until the horse does what you are asking. That’s getting the right answer. Everything the horse does prior to what you are asking isn’t it trying to get out of what you are asking, it is just trying to figure it out. We have to remain calm and persistent in a positive assertive manner, not aggressive. When you get what you are asking, STOP, even if it’s just a little bit, don’t talk to them, turn away (if on the ground) take the pressure off. Allow the horse to stand there soaking up what just happened. Why you stopped asking. The horse is going to ask itself, what did I do to get them to stop asking, to leave me alone? Give the horse plenty of time to process. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? It is….but you’d be surprised how often it is done incorrectly. For instance, if you’re trying to steer your horse to the left and he’s resisting you, wanting to go right....and you finally give in and let him go left...guess what he just learned? Right! He learned when you want to go right, he’s supposed to go left. So don’t let him off the hook until you get the right answer. But don’t be aggressive here, be persistent and consistent. This is effective and powerful horse teaching info everyone should know at the very least. This foundation begins with proper ground work that the concepts will transfer to the saddle. Trail Tip of the Month Summer is here and it is time to enjoy the sultry summer season. But before you hit the trails spend a quick minute thinking about the very real risks of riding in the heat. Heat Stress, Exhaustion, and Stroke, along with the complications from them, are very real risks that if not recognized and treated properly can be debilitating and even life threatening for you and your horse or mule. A quick and easy tool to help determine when environmental conditions may result in heat related illness is the Effective Temperature test. This test consists of simply adding together the ambient temperature and the relative humidity. Veterinary professionals recommend that riders use caution when the sum of the ambient temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity is around 150. When those figures approach 180 most riding activities involving long or intense exercise should be postponed so heat build-up doesn’t become critical. Did You Know? – Some horses are more susceptible to heat overload than others. Poorly conditioned horses and overweight horses and well as geriatric horses are at higher risk of heat stresses than others.
