A RUDE AWAKENING A

horse fight in the middle of the night, will definitely shake a person into “instant awake-ness”! It was just after midnight and the sound of a horse fight made me suddenly jump out of bed! I was putting on boots and grabbed a flashlight and was out the door! The gelding that always has to rub it in around the stallion, that HE is with the mare, and she is HIS and NOT the stud’s…..was obviously doing it again….but this time the gate came open. Why is it that some geldings just HAVE to tantalize a stallion?!! (Kinda like how a blue heeler just HAS to harass the pit bull! Dumb, dumb, dumb!)

What do you do when 2 horses are fighting? Its pitch black and I can’t see a thing but I can certainly hear them. As I’m running out the door, I was thinking “what in the world am I going to do? Throw my flashlight at them??” So I just aimed that question to the Lord and asked Him what I should do. I “heard or sensed” down inside, to go the barn. That is NOT what I would’ve done, but I obeyed that inner information and ran to the barn….the OPPOSITE direction from all the commotion. Sure enough, not long after I got there, the noise out in the blackness stopped and the gelding came trotting up to the barn all alone! At the very LEAST I figured that if the gelding headed for the barn, the stallion would be right on his butt and I was ready to try and swing a gate in between them or something, but that wasn’t the case at all! It was amazingly peaceful! The gelding came huffing and puffing up to the barn, shaken and sporting some teeth marks, but simply turned back to face the horses and STOPPED! It was as if he had been led up to the barn by an invisible being and just handed over to me!

This whole incident was over in a matter of minutes. But what amazed me was KNOWING that God had taken care of the whole deal….me, the horses…. everything! I’ve seen these things before and they don’t play out like this. It was GOD Who told me to go the OPPOSITE direction from the fight and be ready. It was GOD who separated the two and sent the gelding to the barn while he was STILL looking and WANTING to go back to the mare. I felt such an incredible peace and such an awareness that Father was taking care of me and my horses.

I’m alone out here and there’s no one else to lean on when something like this happens, so what a warmth it is to experience God’s intervention on my behalf!

I’m learning to LIVE in the awareness of His presence with confidence in the fact that “God’s got this”….whatever it may be that I’m facing at the moment. He WANTS to be whatever we LACK in life! Don’t know what to do?

He’s your WISDOM. Don’t know how you’re going to handle something? He’s your STRENGTH. Don’t know how you’re going to make ends meet? He’s your PROVISION. WHATEVER you need….He IS! The only reason why God isn’t actively working WITH us in life is because we’ve not allowed Him the freedom to do so!

It’s a process….where we learn how to work WITH God. Just START. Because there’s not one single event in your life that He is not interested in and desires to BE and DO what you CAN’T without Him!

Georgia Horse Rescue to host

3rd Annual

Rescue Challenge

League, Ltd. will hold their annual “Rescue Challenge”.

This event, will showcase five Georgia horses which have been rescued from situations involving cruelty, starvation, or abandonment. These animals have now been physically rehabilitated and then placed with five, up and coming Georgia horse trainers who have agreed to work with them for 120 days prior to the Challenge.

On September 24, 2016, they will all come together to compete for a first place cash award of $2000.00 and the coveted GERL Rescue Challenge silver belt buckle in the largest GERL fundraiser of the year. The event will take place in the UGA Livestock (Indoor) Arena – 2598 S. Milledge Ave. – Athens, GA 30605.

Each of the horses and their trainers will enter the arena several times during the day to perform required tasks for the pleasure of the audience and three judges.

The obstacle course portion of the Challenge has historically been an audience favorite and features some very surprising and “tricky” tasks which are kept secret until just before the horses enter the arena. In the finale, each pair will present an exciting “freestyle” performance, the product of each trainer’s imagination.

The Rescue Challenge was born of the certain knowledge that horses with little or no training are very difficult to place into permanent homes after they have been rehabilitated following the abusive situations from which they came. Most horse owners have scant knowledge regarding how to work with a skittish horse and are easily discouraged by the understandable fear of getting hurt. The Rescue Challenge, the “brain child” of GERL President, Patty Livingston, has been quite successful in the past. It has been responsible for a number of rescue horses being placed into loving homes where they can now be enjoyed by their owners and receive the care they require and deserve.

This will be an all-day event beginning at 9.00 A.M. It will appeal to all who own or simply love horses. There will be multiple on-site vendors offering unusual equine related items as well as various food vendors and demonstrations of interest to those in attendance. GERL will hold both a silent and a live auction during the day featuring many very desirable horse related items.

Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children (12 and under) and may be purchased from the GERL website: http://gerlltd.org. Vendor and sponsor applications may also be obtained from the website.

Be sure to follow the GERL Rescue Challenge Facebook page to see updates from the trainers as the horses progress through their training. All of the horses will be available for adoption to approved homes after the day of the event. Information regarding adoption can be found on the GERL website.

Direction & Drive With Richard Winters

How well can you “send” your horse?

With your horse at the end of a halter and lead rope, can you send them out and away from you in a specific direction?

Perhaps you have the ability to send them into a trailer. Can you send your horse over a log or a little ditch? I recently had a young horse that did not want to step onto the wash rack in my barn. Rather than continuing to pull on the lead rope, I stepped over to the side and sent my horse up onto the wash rack.

Let’s Start With The Tools I prefer a simple hand tied rope halter with a 12-foot lead rope that has some good substance and feel. Unlike a wide web halter that horses tend to lean and brace against, the rope halter is more conducive to communication. The 12-foot lead rope allows me to move my horse out and away and keep them at a safe distance. If my lead rope is too short, I’m taking the chance of getting kicked.

When sending my horse I think about communicating clear signals for direction and drive. If I’m sending my horse off to the left, I will direct with my left hand on the lead rope showing my horse which way to go. With my right hand I will drive.

I often like to use the end of my lead rope in a swinging motion like a propeller.

However if you are more comfortable with a stick, flag or whip, that could be fine as well.

The Pass-By Exercise A great way to improve your sending skills, using direction and drive, is to practice the “pass-by” exercise. This can be done along any fence-line or wall. The idea is to send your horse away from you and have them travel in between you and the fence. You can start quite a few feet away from the fence. As you and your horse get more comfortable, you can begin to narrow the gap.

Start with your feet parallel to the fence.

The goal is to not move your feet until the horse has passed by and has moved to the other side. Extend your direction arm and begin to drive your horse with the end of the lead rope in your other hand. As previously mentioned, this can be done with the propeller action of the lead rope or some other type of tool. Most people have a tendency to drive the hindquarters prematurely. It’s important for horses 10

“Sending” my horse over an obstacle

“Pass By” exercise to move over and away before you start driving them forward. I will swing the rope towards their front end until they step over and then allow them to begin to walk forward. Prematurely driving your horse’s hindquarters causes them to simply keep turning and looking at you and never going anywhere.

Trouble Shooting One of the most important aspects of the pass-by exercise is the horse stepping away. If the horse begins to move and just brushes right alongside you, he never really yielded to your suggestion. Your body position and the proper use of your tools become critical at this point. If you are back towards your horse’s hip you’re in the wrong position. You need to be up at your horse’s neck and shoulder.

Now, with your propeller or stick, make sure your horse steps away and creates a large area between the two of you before he starts stepping forward. With this movement you are asking the horse to yield away, just like a more dominant horse would have your horse yield out of their space.

You often see this problem when people try to lunge their horse. They are attempting to drive the hindquarters before the front end moves over. The horse never really moves out and away and just continually stops to look at the handler. At that moment the problem is not the hindquarters. The direction and drive needs to happen at your horse’s front end. Yield the front end away and then drive the hindquarters forward. This will be a tremendous help next time you attempt to lunge your horse.

Keep this simple tip in mind – If your feet are going backwards, your horse is probably training you! Remember, your horse needs to step away from you and

Direction and Drive into the trailer out of your space. Often, people are moving backwards in the subconscious effort to get out of their horse’s way. This will be counterproductive and your horse will not gain the respect that he should have for you and your abilities.

This simple exercise will prepare you and your horse to do the practical jobs that you ultimately want to accomplish. If it is difficult to send your horse between you and the fence, you will find it very difficult to send your horse up into the trailer or over an obstacle.

At the end of this maneuver you want your horse to disengage his hindquarters and face you again. If he is moving forward, his hindquarters are engaged and giving him forward momentum. If you can readily tip his hindquarters out of the way you can shut down the forward momentum.

If you are driving your horse to the left with your lead rope in your left hand, you can now reach down the lead rope with your right hand to tip the horse’s nose to you. As you tip the horse’s nose to you with your right hand, his hindquarters will yield away and he will disengage.

Leading your horse from point A to point B is certainly a good and reasonable thing to do. However, if you also have the ability to send your horse, now you have more options in the many situations you and your horse will find yourselves. Good dancers certainly know how to execute more than one simple dance routine.

Having multiple skills will certainly enhance your horsemanship journey.

Western Dressage

F

or me, western dressage is a dream come true. I was so fortunate to learn dressage training as a young rider. I rode with my mentor, Bobbie Steele, for more than 25 years.

What I learned in the dressage saddle, I went home and practiced with my ponies, my first horse, and my second horse, which was a yearling. Dressage applied to all aspects of training and all horses that I worked with, from the ground to the saddle. Even if a different saddle was used, whether western, hunt seat, saddle seat, or dressage, there was no reason to ride any differently.

This leads to my passion for the newest western discipline, western dressage. I have always loved western riding, and I specialized my riding with the American Quarter Horse because I was fascinated with a horse that could do multiple disciplines. In my opinion, the American Quarter Horse is the world’s most versatile horse, and I still love training the Quarter Horse today.

Although I was raised and trained in Florida with Bobbie Steele in the late 1960s, Ms. Steele was hardly a newcomer to dressage.

In fact, she was the first woman in America to ride a this type of 18th-century horsemanship known as dressage. Bobbie Steele was even featured in Life magazine in the issue October 14, 1946. Google it!

She took me under her wing when she retired from doing exhibitions all over the U.S. with her two dressage horses. She was also hired with the Ringling Bros. circus as a rider and rode with the circus for 10 years. She learned from the German trainers who were hired to train the horses for the circus. Ms. Steele was something special, and I will always cherish my training with her. I will forever thank her for giving me my foundation for becoming a correct rider and training horses according to the dressage principles and

Western dressage promotes natural, correct development of the horse with TIME. It also allows training a horse with understanding and sound communication between horse and rider. I truly believe western horses need this today. It is the perfect and proven way to promote the equine sport. It promotes correct and humane ethics of horsemanship. Western dressage is the perfect way for a horse owner to achieve happiness with his horse if he is dedicated to become a correct rider. It is the only way to train the horse to always be confident and happy in his work with you.

As Cyril says to our students, “Remember that a horse is not calling you to come ride him! A horse would much prefer to graze on grass all day long. It is our selfishness that causes us to want to ride that horse and to want him to perform happily for us.”

It is our responsibility to bring out the best in our horses and always respect them by riding with correct balance and use of natural aids. We must control the horse’s balance so he can perform easy and comfortably.

As a young rider, I learned that if I wanted to learn dressage, I had to become a good rider first. As a child, I learned that riding in my dressage saddle was no different than my western saddle when I went home to ride my ponies and my first horse. The horses went along just as happy, and I could train them with correct balance and natural aids. By understanding their behaviors and how their anatomy affected their performance, I could ride with better balance and communicate more effectively with my seat, legs, and hands.

Controlling the horse’s balance in the dressage saddle was just as important in the western or hunt seat saddle. The training was all the same. Dressage is dear to my heart

because it gave me my foundation. I used the principles I learned from dressage in my riding, training, and competitions, and I have had a successful career with horses and riders because of this foundation.

Can western dressage follow classical dressage? Why not? Classical dressage is the natural way to train a horse, and its success is in the training pyramid as well as the levels and tests. The training tests are a perfect outline to learn how to “Ride Well” and how to naturally train a horse according to his anatomy, instincts, personality, and behavior.

With proper development, a western horse can do what dressage tests are asking in all levels up to 4th Level, Grand Prix, and Intermediate.

If you want to learn to “Ride Well” and have control of your horse with accuracy and lightness, please look into this new discipline.

Even if you don’t ever compete in western dressage, it provides the ideal guidelines to help you learn the proper progression of training. The progression and success are all in the tests. Your coach/instructor should be following the proper progression for you and your horse.

I always enjoy having young horses in training. I am working on getting three horses to 4th Level but I need at least three to four more years. The most important part of dressage is that it takes time to properly develop a horse. It is my passion to promote western dressage, as I know that it will help all horse owners learn about the sport of riding.

Happy Trails!

Copper Gap Trail is located on the western slope

of Starr Mountain. It is 7.6 miles in length. There are spectacular views of Etowah and the Conasauga Valley below. The views are even more spectacular after the tornado touched down on this trail a few years ago, because the timber along the trail was completely laid down in a few places. Cooper Gap connects with the middle of Starr Mountain Trail via the Burkett Ivins’ Extension Trail. (Burkett Ivins’ Extension is blazed with Tennessee orange paint, and Copper Gap is blazed with lavender paint). Cooper Gap also connects to the main road on top near the fire tower. Take a right at this point to access Starr Mountain Trail in about a quarter mile to the south. Or take a left up to the fire tower for a fantastic view (especially so after the leaves are gone).

Cooper Gap can be thought of as a circle with two stems on top. It can be accessed from the Mountain Road on the bottom, but you just have to find a place to pull off the road as best you can. Near the Tennessee Forestry building is a good spot. Then the trail can be accessed behind the Tennessee Forestry building.

Long C Trails

Long C Trails is located on the Ky/Tn border between Westmoreland and LaFayette Tn. Camp has lots of shade, nice level camp sites and good stabling in barns. Electric and water hook ups. Shower and facilities very large and clean. Camp hosts very accommodating.

Trails are well marked with maps and descriptions. Owner has 420 acres of his own and enough neighbors to make 2000+ acres access. Wonderful river crossing in several places and views of the Cumberland plateau. This is a family run, no alcohol camp so it is quiet and peaceful. There is enough riding for a long weekend without retracing trail. There are cattle in several places so having a good horse you can open gates with us a plus.

Advocacy

rom January through July I have the unique privilege of speaking at equine expos across the country where I teach trail riding and camping with horses and mules. I love sharing my passion for trail riding and helping get people past their fears and out onto the trails. It’s fabulous.

One of my most popular talks is called “The ABC’s of Trail Riding”. I use the alphabet to explore what to consider before you hit the trails. As you might imagine this fun talk starts with the letter “A”. Nathaniel Hawthorne aside; my letter “A” is for Advocacy which is defined by our good friend Merriam Webster as “the act or process of supporting a cause”. Of course the cause is keeping trails open to equestrian use. I’ve made a point of asking the audiences if anyone belongs to a group, any group, that helps to keep trails open. Far too often the sound of silence is deafening. I guess it’s forest gnomes that are at work clearing trail and lobbying land managers to keep our trails open.

Here are a few hard truths for you.

• Every day another bit of paradise is paved for a new housing development or shopping mall.

• State and Federal land managers have stagnant operating budgets that have a hard time keeping up with basic trail maintenance let alone building new trail systems.

• Horse and mule riders are a very small population of trail users.

I belong to the Back Country Horsemen organization, TrailMeister is The Largest Equine Trail and Camping among others, but they are far from the only group working ensure that trails Guide in the World remain open to stock use. Here are some options that will help make your voice heard.

Joining the local horse or mule club is a very effective way for you to help build and maintain the amazing trails that you love to ride. Your membership dues will often support not only your local group’s work, but sometimes even nationwide efforts.

Like to visit new places from time to time and want to support trail systems in other locations? Most state horse councils (such as the Wisconsin Horse Council) provide a mouthpiece for equine owners to share ideas and suggestions on horse related issues, organized trail rides, and other social functions. They also provide resources to promote the building and maintenance of bridle trails within the state.

Like to ride fast and far? The American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) has a special Trails and Land Management Committee that makes trails grants to worthwhile trail building/maintenance projects on the trails that we ride.

Worried about zoning issues that restrict horses? The Equine Land Conservation Resource (ELCR) works through their members to raise awareness of the issues driving loss of horse land and supports local actions to keep land open to equine use.

Already a member of an equine organization? Are they doing all they can to keep your trails open?

I recently visited Raleigh, NC where I was a guest speaker for the National Equestrian Trails Conference. I was surrounded by advocates for horse trails. It was fabulous. The NETC is a way for equestrian groups across the nation to share tools, insights and ideas with from every conceivable discipline. Horse Councils, breed associations, Federal, state, and local land managers, Endurance Ride groups, a few Back Country Horsemen groups and many more were in attendance.

Sustainable and successful trail systems involve collaborations between land managers, volunteer groups, and other local stakeholders, such as private landowners, environmental organizations and community leaders. The NETC’s approach to advocacy is based on building effective coalitions amongst like-minded partners.

If you belong to a group that did not send a representative to the NETC I would suggest that you encourage them to attend this event next year to help keep your trail systems open.
