Horsetalk Fixed Peak ruling retained for the Cross Country phase

Four month-old foal in critical condition after being found dying by side of road “But he is eating and trying to live so we have everything crossed he will pull through - he is such a lovely foal. He has melted all our hearts.

Further to an announcement on 30th January regarding the new rule banning helmets with fixed peaks being worn on the cross country phase of British Eventing affiliated events, the BE Sport Committee met again on 10th February to discuss this further.

It was agreed that this new rule, which states that: “For the Cross Country phase, protective headwear must not have a fixed peak,” will be retained.

Only Jockey Skulls will be permitted on Cross Country. Whilst a Jockey Skull is a commonly understood description for a type of peakless protective helmet, for the purposes of clarification, a Jockey Skull typically has: No peak, peak type extensions or noticeable protruberances above the eyes (or to the front) and has an even, elliptical or rounded shape. A smooth or slightly abrasive surface. A removable cover containing the peak, should one be required (such as a hat silk).

Helmets with fixed peaks can still be worn for the showjumping and dressage phases if in accordance with the rules, which remain unchanged.

“The safety of its members is of paramount importance to British Eventing, and this rule has been introduced to enable BE members to compete in the best personal protective equipment available” said Chris Farr, BE Sport Operations Manager.

“It seems we are not the only ones as we have been overwhelmed by people phoning us wanting to help, after we put up a short appeal on our Facebook page. “We are so grateful for such a heartwarming response - it just shows you how much people care.”

A four month-old foal is in a critical condition after he was found dying by the side of the road in Essex. The RSPCA was called after Gizmo, a tiny piebald cob, was found without his mother near Ridgewell Caravan Park in Yeldham Road, Ridgewell in Halstead in an emaciated, extremely poorly state. Along with the police and a vet, vet nurse and yard manager from nearby Catley Cross Veterinary Clinic, we attended and took him into care where he is now fighting for his life. A short Facebook appeal has received with an overwhelming response from the public, who have all rung the centre to help. As well as being extremely underweight, he was riddled with lice, has redworm, was hypothermic, dehydrated and has since been found to have pneumonia. RSPCA inspector Sarah Elmy said: “Poor Gizmo was just abandoned without his mum and left to die by the side of the road. “He was so weak he was just collapsed and couldn’t - and still can’t - stand, and you can see every bone in his body, he’s so thin. We had to carry him to the van on a rug. “He was so keen to live, though, bless him. Even though he was lying flat out, he was trying to reach forward and crawl himself along the ground to get to grass. As soon as we propped him up he was nibbling, trying to eat from our hand. It was so heartbreaking. “I just really hope he pulls through. He’s certainly trying his best.” Veterinary surgeon Carolyn Wise said: “It is touch and go at the moment - Gizmo is walking a fine line.

Gizmo’s story is sadly not uncommon. The country is currently in the grip of a horse crisis with the RSPCA and other horse welfare charities struggling to cope with the numbers of abandoned, neglected and abused horses. The RSPCA alone has more than 600 horses in its care and receives about 500 complaints relating to horse welfare every week. For those wanting to donate towards Gizmo’s care should call 0300 123 0346 or visit https://www.justgiving.com/gizmothefoal/ Any surplus funds will be used for the rescue and treatment of other equines in a similar situation. Anyone with any information about how Gizmo came to be dumped so callously like this should call 0300 123 8018.

50 SHADES OF GREY (with a neigh) Best Rehoming Performance for a Decade Carries on through January confirm that people really do see rehoming a horse as a safe and viable option,” she says. So for those who are seeking 50-shades-ofneigh and would happily pass-up Christian Grey’s billions for a calm, sensible, gentleman they need look no further than World Horse Welfare Paul. Contrary to the mules’ traditional reputation he has a lovely temperament and is good to handle. He is loyal, easy to care for and willing to please and with a kind, patient handler could be brilliant at horse agility. The New Yorker’s film critic Anthony Lane is convinced that the fictional, billionairelead in the blockbuster film ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ isn’t actually looking for a relationship involving questionable bedroom antics at all. Lane has deduced from Christian Grey’s “infatuation with grooming, regular feeding and nicely buffed leather goods” that, rather than a girlfriend, he actually wants a pony!

Sunshine Tour UK championships come to Hickstead Many of the world’s most famous equestrians have competed at Hickstead, and now hundreds of unaffiliated riders will have the chance to follow in their footsteps. For the first time, the finals of The Sunshine Tour series will be held here at the All England Jumping Course in West Sussex (18 September 2015). It’s an exciting new departure for Hickstead, which is able to host these popular unaffiliated championships after the recent addition of new facilities, including a spectacular all-weather arena and new hard-standing for parking. “Thanks to the support of a Hoof Capital Funding award and investment from the family, we have been able to extend our season and ensure that many more people benefit from access to the wonderful facilities at the All England Jumping Course,” said Hickstead Director Edward Bunn.

World Horse Welfare could have the answer (provided Mr Grey has the kind of experience that matters to us). Whilst Christian Grey may actively enjoy pain and suffering, the sad reality is that our pin-ups have their own much less alluring stories of genuine anguish. Mercifully, we can promise all of the horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in our ’50 Shades of Grey’ montage a life with no more pain and plenty of gain thanks to our Rehoming Scheme.

“We are delighted to be hosting The Sunshine Tour UK championships, which will offer hundreds of unaffiliated riders the opportunity to compete here.” The Sunshine Tour is a national series that encourages grassroots and unaffiliated riders to participate in competitions in the disciplines of dressage, showjumping and showing.

Following last year’s ten-year-rehomingrecord where more than 300 horses found new homes (compared to 216 the previous year), 2015 is set to be another run-away success. “January is historically one of the most difficult months to find homes for our horses because people are getting back into the swing of work and school, the weather is cold and the nights are long. However during the first month of 2015 we have found ideal new homes for around 30 horses and ponies, which is a very encouraging sign for the year ahead,” says Deputy Head of UK Support Sam Chubbock. “These figures

Rehoming not only assures loving new homes for once-abused or neglected horses, it also frees up space in our four Rescue and Rehoming Centres for those who desperately need our care and expertise. Deputy Chief Executive Tony Tyler explains that large groups of 10 or more horses are coming into our Centre’s with alarming regularity: “We are encouraging owners to think carefully before putting their mare into foal. Our Need to Breed? message has never been more important as frustratingly the number of horses needing urgent rescue and rehabilitation far outweighs the number that we are rehoming,” he says. We are always looking for rehomers who are able to give a safe and caring home to a once-abused or neglected horse or pony. Find out more at www.worldhorsewelfare.org/rehoming

The 2015 Tour will be held at various venues throughout the UK between January and September. Riders who finish in the top six places at their event will qualify for the Championships at Hickstead. Rebecca Stansfield, Director of Sunshine Tour UK, is now working to expand the series even further. “The Sunshine Tour offers a fabulous opportunity for unaffiliated riders to experience the fun and excitement of competition. We want to welcome as many people as possible, so we’re keen to team up with more venues right across the country,” Rebecca says. Qualifying events are already underway, and riders who wish to enter should visit the Sunshine Tour UK website at www.sunshinetour.co.uk

Why Steam Hay? Ensuring your horse receives enough quality forage is vital. With so many variations in quality available it can be difficult to decide what is best for your horse. Undoubtedly the most ideal forage for horses, hay has a relatively low price tag and large shelf life. Its only flaw can be the level of dust spores it contains, which may put horses off eating and can cause respiratory problems. Forget the idea of soaking hay, HAYGAIN’s scientifically proven steaming method provides the complete solution, destroying all dust spores, mites, bacteria and mould found in hay. The steamed hay will retain its nutritional goodness, and trials have shown that horses - even fussy eaters - love it because of its sweet smell and palatability. Dental care for the older horse Regular dental checks are just as important in older/geriatric horses as it is in a younger horse. If older equines have had regular dental checks throughout their life then they should have little or no problems however if they have not had regular dental care and they have gone years between checks then problems can occur and could be irreversible. For example if a tooth has become protuberant or dominant and the condition has not been noticed then over the years it can wear and/or destroy the opposing tooth or teeth. A common problem that I come across is where a tooth has become loose through periodontal disease (gum disease) making the gum and/or the area around it very painful and swollen. Sometimes as the horse chews this tooth can move slightly making it very painful and possibly force the horse to stop eating. In some cases an equine’s tooth can be so loose it can literally just be plucked out by hand. Symptoms for periodontal disease can be a reluctance to eat, dropping of food or a foul odour coming from the mouth. These can lead to weight loss and other health problems.

Figs 1 - 3 show some examples which can result in tooth wear and premature loss. Fig 1 shows a protuberant tooth which has worn away the opposing tooth. Fig 2 shows a hook on the upper arcade and ramps on the lower arcade which have worn the opposing teeth and would block the forward and backward movement (ap movement) of the jaw. Fig 3 shows very severe ramps on the lower arcade which have completely destroyed the upper teeth. It also shows protuberant teeth on the upper arcade which are wearing away the lower teeth.

Caries (equivalent to cavities in humans) can affect any age of horse but if left undetected or untreated for years can become extremely painful. They can also cause fractures as the centre of the tooth becomes weaker and decays and then the opposite tooth can strike and fracture it as the horse chews. As with all horses when they age the eruption rates of their teeth start to slow down meaning they have less reserve crown and so any corrective work that is carried out has to be done quite conservatively because once the teeth are taken out of occlusion (contact) with each other its highly likely that they will stay like that and the horse could struggle to eat its food. Cupping out, which is where the enamel begins to wear away, can occur in the teeth from as early as sixteen years old although more often seen in equines in their early twenties. Equines that have had regular dental checks shouldn’t begin the cupping out process until their early to mid twenties. The usual procedure is to maintain or remove the opposing tooth out of occlusion (contact) to protect and prevent the wear of the cupped out/affected tooth. The molars or cheek teeth are tightly packed together in rows known as arcades and remain like this throughout most of the horse’s life. However

because teeth taper from top to bottom, as eruption continues gaps begin to appear between the teeth causing food to become trapped known as periodontal pockets which if left can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease and possible tooth loss. Each tooth within the horse’s mouth contains one or more chambers called pulp chambers. The function of these chambers is to house the nerves and blood vessels that bring vitality to the tooth normally the pulp chambers recede as the tooth wears so it never becomes exposed protecting against infection and disease. However pulp chambers can be exposed especially in the older horse by a number of ways; • If too much tooth is removed through dental work or thermal damage especially as horses have less reserve crowns as they age. • The effectiveness of the pulp tissue to do its job due to age related reduction in cells meaning less efficient blood flow. • Through tooth trauma or fracture. • Disease. • Bacteria / infection. • Increased pressure or wear from opposing teeth. In older horses blood supply is less efficient in the pulp and exposure could lead to pulp necrosis inflammation and pulp death. Pulp damage and/or exposure is very painful for horses and in extreme cases can result in tooth extraction. By finding these problems early we can prevent the unnecessary suffering of equines. As equine’s get older their eruption rates slow down and it can be harder to correct any problems so I would recommend that they have a dental check at least every 6 months to a year. Sometimes we can’t make an older horse’s mouth perfect but we can make them as comfortable and functional as possible.

BLOCK THE SHOCK Saddle Wear.... For the most comfortable ride of your life.... All Block the Shock products contain advanced technology, high performance memory foam, renowned for its load spreading and pressure relieving qualities. Absorbs up to 90% Shock. Saddle Seat • Cushions the rider and reduces percussion on the horse’s back • Protects coccyx and seat bones from impact • Slow recovery memory foam helps maintain your riding position • Moulds to your seat shape in seconds • Non-slip base, secure, easy-fit straps • Stays pliable in extreme cold conditions • Ideal for all aspects of riding

Fitting Tip If your saddle fits correctly, you should not need the fillet pads, however in some cases you may ride unevenly due to your own personal injuries, or physical disabilities, which may lead to your body weight bearing down on one side of the saddle more than the other. If this occurs then extra fillets would be beneficial for the horse to ease the pressure points. These can be seen if you quickly remove the saddle after dismounting and examine the memory foam section.

Luxurious Pressure Relief Numnah • Moulds quickly to your horses back, giving maximum comfort* • Helps reduce pressure, percussion and impact on muscles that lie under the saddle. These include Thoracic Trapezius and Latissimus Dorsi muscles, which help move the arm bone back when the hoof has landed. The Superficial Medial Gluteal and Tensor muscles help bring the hind leg forward after the hoof leaves the ground* • Sometimes the scapula bone can lie under the saddle depending on the horses bone structure. This is where leg movement starts from, so removal of pressure to this area is vital for optimum performance* • Includes four built in pockets with removable memory foam fillets for seasonal change, age or muscle waste* • British cropped wool reduces bulk, wicks away sweat and gives a luxurious feel and look • Unique, secure and easy to fit fastenings

Half Numnah Includes four removable fillets sections for use over the top of your normal fabric numnah. For ben-efits, see items marked* in the “Luxurious Pressure Relief Numnah” section opposite.

– y e n r u o J The Harness cess c u S o t g n i v Dri In this issue experts at the Society of Master Saddlers take a closer look at the intricacies of the driving harness, and unravel the mysteries of the various parts. The bridle is much like any other normal bridle apart from the addition of the blinkers; these are small squares of leather attached to the bridle to cover the horses’ eyes, to help keep their focus going forward and not be distracted by things to their side. The noseband helps stabilise the blinkers. The breast collar sits across the horse’s chest and is an essential part of the harness as this allows the horse to pull the carriage or trap; this should lay on the widest part of the horse’s chest. A full collar is fitted around the widest part of the horse’s neck, as would commonly have been seen on heavy horses pulling farm equipment; this would allow the horse to use its full weight and strength. The collar itself is made up of 11 different parts; including the Reins, Rein terret, Terret, Pad, Tug, Bellyband, Wither strap, Neck strap, Breastcollar, Girth and Trace. Driving reins are longer than standard reins and the rein terrets guide the reins from the bridle to the driver, preventing them from becoming tangled or snagged on the harness. The Pad sits in the position of the saddle and is a small supportive piece of the harness that lies on the horse's back.

When thinking about the driving harness the key points to remember should always be a good fit, safety and comfort for your horse or pony.

with the different pieces it becomes a simple but effective piece of tack, allowing a horse or pony to pull various types of horse drawn vehicles.

To the untrained eye the driving harness can look like a jigsaw of different straps of leather but once you become familiar

The main pieces that make up the harness are the bridle, reins, breast collar and breeching.

22 HorseScene

The tugs support the shafts of the carriage and the belly band strap fits loosely under the belly of the horse, outside the girth and prevents the shafts rising up and the Trace is the straps or chains which take the pull from the breastcollar. The breeching is the harness’s braking system and has a wide strap that lies across the horse's hindquarters and smaller straps lay across the croup. Hold back straps attach to rings on the shaft of the cart.

The Crupper goes underneath the horse's tail. Care must be taken to ensure the crupper is clean and lays flat to avoid hair becoming trapped. The back strap attaches by looping through the crupper D at the rear of the pad or surcingle to attach the crupper. The Breeching straps fit round the horse's haunches allowing it to set back and slow the carriage. A good quality leather driving harness that is well cared for will last many years. When harnessing the horse to the carriage, the carriage must always be brought to the horse, never reverse the horse into the carriage, for this reason and safety, harnessing a horse to drive is usually a two person job.

There are six different pieces that make up the breeching, including the Crupper,

Loin strap, Back strap, Breeching strap, Breeching and Trace Carrier.

Carriage driving offers a range of classes for all abilities and is also a very inclusive sport for people with disabilities.

TOP TI P S

to catch that perfect picture

Are you a happy snapper? Or pony paparazzi? Horses are not the easiest of subjects for the amateur photographer to capture. Where should you stand? How can you get them to behave? What’s the best setting and time of year? FOCUS Here are some top tips from equine photographer Sue WestwoodRuttledge, who is definitely not afraid to work with children or animals.

Use the eye closest to you as the focal point of your picture. Make sure it is absolutely sharp.

HEAD Try to angle the horse’s head to the side rather than have it face straight to camera. It makes a more interesting photo and shows off the horse’s coat and muscles. Head-on shots can sometimes make the horse’s neck disappear and you’ll end up with some very unflattering images.

STATURE

CLEAN Before you start photographing your horse, make sure you have given it a brush. Wipe its eyes and nose. It’s amazing how much muck and hay shows up in manes and faces. Also clean the head collar and tack. You’ll be surprised how the smallest piece of dirt will show up in photos. I promise you it’s much easier to clean it first rather than trying to edit it out afterwards, unless you are a Photoshop wizard.

HELP It’s always better if you can have a helper - someone to hold the horse and keep its attention. An alert horse with ears facing forward is far more pleasing to look at than a dozing one. So make your helper work hard to keep the horse’s attention. Horses desensitise very quickly, so ask your helper to vary what they are doing to keep them alert. Walking another horse past always works well, as does having a bucket with feed in.

MOVE Experiment with where you stand. Trust me, it’s a whole lot easier for you to vary your position than to keep moving the horse. Don’t be embarrassed - crouch down, lie on your back, stand up on a box. Keep moving around your horse looking for interesting angles.

Try to get the horse to stand as square as possible and make sure its not resting a leg: a three legged horse is not a good look!

DETAIL Create interesting, arty shots by going in close for the details. Whiskers, eyes and noses can all make for interesting photos.

LIGHT On a bright, sunny day, find some shade. It may seem counterintuitive, but sunny days don’t actually make for the best photos. A cloudy but bright day can produce stunning light for creative photography. But do try to keep grey skies out of your photographs. Your horse is never going to be shown off to its best whilst rain clouds gather above it.

TWO’S COMPANY If you want to experiment with photos of a friend and their horse, try to get them as close to each other as you can to create a connection. Your friend doesn’t need to look at the cameras all of the time. Get them to stroke, smile at and interact with the horse rather pose for the camera. Ask them to walk away from you and then towards you, again keeping close to their horse.

CELEBRATE

SAFETY You need to be aware of not spooking the horse whilst photographing them, keep calm, talk to the horse, move slowly and make sure the horse knows you are there, especially if you go behind them for some shots.

blossom. Old wooden doors, rugged stone walls and corrugated barns basically anything with texture and colour - will work well. Don’t put a dark coloured pony in front of green trees as it won’t stand out.

SCENE Look for interesting backgrounds to compliment the horse. Muck heaps and broken wheelbarrows don’t make for great pictures. But backdrops don’t have to be pristine fields or trees in

Finally, think about what you’re going to do with your pictures once you’ve taken them. Could they end up on mugs? Calendars? T shirts? A large wall canvas? In a nice album? There are so many options. If you’re proud of your work – and so you should be – it’s a crime to let it languish on your camera.

Experienced equine photographer Sue Westwood-Ruttledge started the Horse Photographer UK www.horsephotographeruk.co.uk franchise in 2013. A horse-owner herself since the age of 14, she carries out over 100 photoshoots of horses and their owners each year. Frequently working her way through a 12-week waiting list, she says the demand for quality equine photography is increasing each year. Franchisees don’t need photography experience, as Sue will mentor them. Just a love of horses.

legalscene Equine charities and the struggles they face

Equine welfare charities and organisations located in England and Wales play a vital role in providing rescue and rehoming facilities for horses and ponies, which are without a home and/or poorly treated. However, over the past few years, welfare charities have been experiencing immense pressure and strain on their available resources due to the increasing number of horses and ponies needing their help.

Our expert

DWF is a leading national law firm with an equine team committed to horses, with some owning and showing their own horses in their spare time. The team has developed a breadth of expertise in contentious and non-contentious equine matters spanning the full services that DWF provide from varied property transactions, business acquisitions and employment matters to complex contractual disputes, rights of way issues and insurance related claims. We have the capability to assist a wide range of clientele consisting of, for example, owners/ breeders, racing managers, racecourses, corporate entities, charities and competitive bodies/organisations. DWF are the appointed solicitors to The Pony Club and can be contacted on 0845 404 2293. www.dwf.co.uk/businesses/ litigation-and-disputehorses resolution/equine-law is being put at risk because their owners cannot afford to provide proper care for them and horses are even being illegally fly grazed on public and private land. This has become a significant problem for landowners, farmers and local authorities and even the public, meaning that a substantial number of such horses are left to fend for themselves, which has caused increased welfare problems with the equine industry. Over the past few months, the news has shown disturbing trends of neglect affecting equines more than any other animal. It is, therefore, no wonder that equine welfare charities are experiencing an enormous strain on their resources with so many horses and ponies being abandoned and requiring help. Space at these welfare charities is limited though and so donations are crucial for these organisations to order to give them the ability to increase their available resources.

Despite the struggles that equine charities are currently facing, a recent inquiry report produced by the Charity Commission in relation to the conduct of a particular equine welfare charity has highlighted the importance of trustees’ duties and responsibilities and a charity’s obligations to the Charity Commission. Elizabeth Rhodes, a lawyer and equine specialist at national law firm, DWF, considers the current implications for equine charities and their trustees. The current horse crisis In 2012 and 2013, the major equine welfare organisations released two reports detailing the challenges that

28 HorseScene

such organisations face and highlighting recommendations to help mitigate the current horse crisis due to the number of horses at risk in England and Wales. A number of factors have contributed to this crisis. One of these is overbreeding where the equine market has become saturated due to dealers still buying, breeding and importing horses and ponies thereby driving down the market price of these animals to as little at £5. Contrary to this, the rising cost of food, veterinary bills and livery, including severe bouts of poor weather, has led to people being unable to look after their horse. As a result, the welfare of these

Charities’ obligations and trustees’ responsibilities When experiencing a strain on resources, a charity’s efforts are often solely focused on achieving its charitable purposes for the public benefit and fundraising in order to increase their resources. For equine welfare charities, their efforts are focused on rescuing and rehoming horses and ponies. However, all registered charities have obligations to the regulator, the Charity Commission, to which they must adhere. For example, all registered charities are required by law to provide annual returns and accounts to the Charity Commission and to keep their information on the

public register up to date. These requirements apply to all registered charities whose gross income exceeds £25,000 per year. Trustees of charities are responsible for ensuring their charity adheres to such obligations. A trustee’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: • to act in the best interests of the charity; • to act reasonably and responsibly in all matters relating to their charity; • only to use their charity’s income and property for purposes set out in the charity’s governing document; and • to make decisions in line with good practice and the rules set by the charity’s governing document. In particular, trustees are required to keep adequate records about the finances of the charity and put robust financial management and conflicts of interest processes in place as well as comply with their legal requirements to prepare and, where appropriate, file annual accounts with the Commission. However, such responsibilities can be neglected by trustees, particularly if the charity is experiencing a strain on resources and/or the charity does not have enough assistance in order to meet such responsibilities adequately. In September 2014, the Charity Commission published its inquiry report in relation to the conduct of an equine welfare charity called White Horse Stables. The Charity Commission had engaged with the charity on a number of occasions in order to resolve concerns about possible unauthorised trustee benefits, how conflicts of interest were being managed between the trustees and the charity’s financial controls and record-keeping. The charity had also failed on several occasions to comply with their annual reporting obligations to the Commission. These issues revealed mismanagement and misconduct in the administration of White Horse Stables and a breach of their legal duties. At the closure of the Commission’s inquiry, the charity had acted on the Commission’s findings and was up to date with its filing obligations. The Commission’s report highlights that the trustees took steps following its report to manage conflicts of interest more robustly. Meeting all legal requirements and acting with good practice However, even the appearance of a conflict of interest can damage the public’s trust and confidence in a charity, which could have a negative impact on financial support provided by the public and, thereby, the work that the charity carries out. Although equine welfare charities are struggling with the strain that has been placed on them due to the horse crisis, it is still essential for such charities to ensure any conflicts of interests are actively managed and that they have appropriate policies and procedures in place to allow them to identify and manage such conflicts. Failure to do so could trigger an inquiry from the Charity Commission, which is likely have a detrimental effect on the reputation of the relevant charity. Help for trustees The role of a trustee can be daunting, particularly given the legal requirements to which a charity must adhere. Where trustees feel that they do not have sufficient expertise or knowledge in respect of their charity’s obligations or their own duties and responsibilities, it is recommended that they should consider seeking appropriate professional advice. With a dedicated charity department, DWF can advise on all aspects of charity law and regulation, in particular, governance, constitutional issues and advising charity trustees on their duties and responsibilities.

Dressage with Emily Philp DRESSAGE - 'The art of riding and training a horse in a manner that develops obedience, flexibility, and balance’... also known by some less 'horsey' individuals as 'The Dancing Horses'. Schooling at home

Emily Philp (above, holding two of her own horses Pink Profile on her left and Cupido on her right) is a professional event rider based on her own yard in Shropshire. Indeed it is truly beautiful to see a horse and rider in perfect harmony and that is what we all strive for. As time has moved forwards, the dressage phase of eventing has had more and more impact on the final positions. We now have to produce our horses to perform to the standard of pure dressage horses. Self-discipline, consistency and clarity are key to helping develop good feel for both horse and rider. Hells Bells warming up at a competition

I have always produced my horses from youngsters and truly believe that with the correct, consistent training, you don't need gadgets and gizmos! I try to work through the basic scales of training - Rhythm, Suppleness, Contact/Connection, Impulsion, Straightness and Collection. We firmly believe if we can instil the correct way of going from the very beginning, we avoid problems further on in training. This often takes a little longer than the 'quick fix' route but we have stronger, sounder and happier horses at the end of it. We cannot say we personally like the modern trend of 'over producing' youngsters before they are physically ready, as is the tendency of many today. Steady consistent training, with hacking and jumping splitting up the monotony

30

of schooling keeps their minds fresh and allows their bodies to recover from the specific demands that schooling makes.

the mind that gets in the way of their performance, so by getting them used to variety and change at home, they are better prepared for the competition environment.

I have trained with my Dressage Trainer Bonnie Williams since I was a child and she has been invaluable to me. I regularly have lessons with her and she works alongside me with all of the horses from novice youngsters through to the advanced level. Along with the input I get from the 'Equine Pathway' with my selected horse’ Camenbert’ I have a solid source of constant knowledge to draw on giving consistency to all the horses. Most of the horses work from the stable so we feel that starting with a good amount of walk work to warm them up is essential. They are stretched and worked deep to start with and we like to move them around laterally in walk too. We use a lot of transitions early on to get the horses listening to us and engage their hind quarters. We ride them on and back within the gaits to keep them attentive and it also highlights if we have them listening to our seat aids correctly. Canter work is usually started before we pick the horses up to work in more of a competition outline. They are all stretched at the end of work and cooled down gently to keep the muscles in tip top condition. We want the horses to work in a variety of outlines as we want them accessible in whatever way we want. We work the horses in the arena on their own, with others schooling, lunging or even jumping, as it is often

In competition with Pink Profile

During the winter months, I take the horses out to pure dressage competitions and have a day focusing on just this discipline. It gives the youngsters a taste of competition in a quieter setting but also starts them out in a disciplined way. They have to be patient and wait on the lorry while the others compete, and learn to adjust to their lorry companions coming and going. I believe this all provides a good education for them and the older horses lead the way as babysitters! It is important to remember that flat work is fundamental to the other two disciplines in eventing. The amount of time spent in the air jumping the fences is minimal in comparison to the amount spent on the ground between the fences. Therefore we must have a supple, responsive, agile horse, which is on our aids, in order to be truly effective. Next issue, we will look at how we train for the jumping phases.
