Horsetalk Redwings announces two new adoption stars
“Black Beauty” Maya, and Rock ’n’ Roll Elvis newest Redwings Adoption Club recruits. Maya arrived at Redwings in 2010 as part of a group of seven equines Elvis rescued from a farm in Essex. The RSPCA had been called to investigate reports of a dead horse in a field at the site and, as well as the deceased horse, found Maya and her friends kept in squalid conditions.
Ponies enjoy the mane success in Rescue Horse of the Year competition
Maya
Maya now lives happily at Redwings' newest visitor centre in Aylsham, North Norfolk, and her courage and gentle nature make her the perfect adoption star! Similarly to Maya, Elvis sadly did not have the best start in life. In 2011, Elvis was signed over into the care of Redwings after welfare concerns for a large group of ponies were raised by Caerphilly County Council in Wales. Elvis’ elderly owner was struggling to care for his horses and subsequently many were suffering from poor health due to a lack of food and veterinary treatment. Elvis has a friendly character, huge heart and devilish good looks which make him irresistible for the Redwings Adoption Club – and to the visitors of Redwings Ada Cole centre where he lives. Maya and Elvis can each be adopted for £12.50 per year and by becoming their friend supporters can help ensure they continue to have happy and healthy lives in the Sanctuary – far from the horrors of their pasts. www.redwings.org.uk

Pony power was the order of the day as two ponies were named the RSPCA Rescue Ponies of the Year. Little Ted, a bay Dartmoor pony who was discovered close to death by the RSPCA and fought his way back to health, scooped the Champion place and Pearly Princess from Thornberry Animal Sanctuary in Sheffield was crowned reserve champion. Judges, contestants and spectators at Equifest were moved to tears by the harrowing photographs and stories of the 70 rescue ponies and horses who entered the qualifying classes. RSPCA chief inspector Cathy Hyde, who heads the 16-strong team of specialist equine inspectors and helped organise the prestigious competition, said: “These two little ponies showed they have got huge personalities and together with their young riders they proved that rescue horses and ponies are far from second best. “Little Ted had a horrific start in his short life. It’s almost impossible to believe that the
photo of the exhausted, little scrap of life collapsed in a stable is the same smart, proud, Dartmoor pony who revelled in being in front of a crowd at Equifest. The transformation is incredible. Little Ted was rescued by the RSPCA in 2010 after being found severely emaciated and collapsed. He was put on drip at the scene and against the odds he survived. His owner was later banned from keeping horses after admitting causing suffering. Entries came from numerous equine charities and sanctuaries including Blue Cross, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare and the Horse and Pony Protection Association (HAPPA) and the horses and ponies were judged on their stories of survival as well as their transformation. Top showing judge Nigel Hollings, former chairman of the British Show Horse Association said: “I really enjoyed judging the RSPCA / PRP Rescue Classes at Equifest. To see and read all about each of the ponies and horses was an experience that will always stay with me. What impressed the most was the attitude and behaviour of the riders and handlers - it was very obvious how strong the bond and connection with their equine was. r o f g n i r a c d Cleaning an s and bridles e l d d a s r e h t le a
“
My horse’s tack always seems to be filthy and greasy after it has been used. I am worried about over cleaning it and ruining the leather, have you got any tips on cleaning and maintaining tack? The Society of Master Saddlers replies:
”
When maintaining a used bridle clean your bridle regularly according to how often it is used. It is much better to give it a quick clean every time it is used but, if you don't have time, a thorough clean once a week for a bridle in daily use should be sufficient.
will not affect the suppleness of the leather. Should you get caught out in the rain whilst riding, immediate action is required! Dismantle the bridle as soon as possible and clean it in the usual way – then allow it to dry out very slowly. Do not be tempted to place it near a heater or a sunny window to speed up the drying process as this will make the leather go very hard - and you may not be able to revive it. After drying, apply a coat of leather dressing or oil followed by saddle soap. Do not oil your bridle too often: restrict oiling to when the bridle is new, when it gets very wet, or if it has been unused for a while and has dried out. If you have just bought a new bridle, always check that it fits your horse before treating it with any kind of oil or leather dressing, as the saddler will not give a refund or exchange an oiled bridle. Once this is done, apply a liberal coat of good quality leather dressing to both sides. Leather dressings are available in oil and paste forms: ask your Saddler for his recommendation.
A good way to keep your bridle in good condition is to wipe it off after use using a cloth such as an old flannel or dishcloth dipped in a small bucket of warm water and thoroughly squeezed out. After cleaning the dirt and grease from the bridle, apply a coat of saddle soap. The soap should be applied with a dry sponge. You can dip the soap bar into the water to wet it a little but don't allow it to lather as it will then leave a white coating on the leather which may go hard. Alternatively, use one of the liquid soaps. If the bridle is very greasy or otherwise heavily soiled you will find that a small handful of washing soda crystals added to the water will help enormously, and
10
Before applying the dressing, dismantle the bridle and place it on some newspaper. If you are using a liquid dressing, the best way to do it is to pour a little into an old saucer and paint it onto the bridle with a clean dry paint brush.
soap or balm using an almost dry sponge (if the sponge is very dry, it's a good tip to dip the soap, not the sponge, in water). You can then reassemble the bridle and it is now ready for use. For saddles use the same method as for bridles except that it is best to apply the leather dressing or oil only to the flesh side (underneath or rough side) as it soaks in better from this side, and the oil or dressing should not come off on your clothing, also some saddle leathers have a coating that will not allow oil to soak in from the grain side (top side). Use only soaps or balms on your saddle which are recommended by your Saddler as some have been known to cause colour fade to certain saddles. Some manufacturers have their own brand of soap or dressing, in this case it may be better to follow the maker’s recommendations, but you should not do any harm to any leather saddle or bridlework using these recommendations. Another important tip is to store your saddle and bridle on a purpose-made rack where a fairly even temperature is maintained. This will help avoid any damage to your saddle and bridle, and if possible keep it under a fabric saddle cover.
Allow the dressing to soak in and then, if the leather still seems to be quite dry, apply another coat. When the dressing is finally absorbed, apply a coat of saddle

Haircut 100! Courtesy of Aloeride, the natural organic aloe vera equine supplement, we caught up with UK-based Australian horseman, Jason Webb, who specializes in starting young horses and retraining horses with behavioural and ridden problems at his centre in Kent.
In this feature, Jason tackles the issue of a spooky dressage horse who is in need of desensitization and a hair cut! “Jazzee is a very talented PSG dressage horse who is very spooky and ‘looky’, so his training here with me is about desensitizing him to pretty much everything, so that he hopefully can start to concentrate on his work under saddle and listen to his rider as oppose to everything else that is going on”
horses galloping around the field behind us. The idea behind this groundwork is for Jazzee to realize by not working with Jason closely he is making life really hard for himself, but if he chooses to work with Jason, then life becomes easy and the circle and sharp changes of direction work stops.
Jason wants to introduce clippers to Jazzee, but firstly he needs to get Jazzee’s attention, whose eyes have been on stalks, staring at the film camera and our photographer. Jason works with all his horses using rope halters, which he says gives you a bit more ability to control, as they work with his ‘pressure and release’ theory, which means that when the horse pulls away from you it puts pressure on, but as soon as the horse stops it releases any pressure, thus giving reward. The lead rope is extra long, to allow Jason to move away from the animal and come closer safely. Jason explains that your horse’s safety and your own is paramount, so he always wears a hard hat and works the horses in the school because it offers good yet soft footing. Jazzee is not paying attention so Jason starts off by asking Jazzee to trot around him on a small circle, with some changes of direction. Jason moves Jazze around him - trying to get his attention on him rather than everything else thats going on
Jazze is moving around Jason in a much calmer manner, being more attentive “Now Jazzee is listening and paying attention, we can start to work with him” Explains Jason. Horses with clipping issues could take one session it could take weeks before we get the horse clipped. Jason is keen to point out that you need to take your time and allow small victories to be the aim throughout your training. Jason firstly rubs the palm of his hand all over the horse to make sure Jazzee is relaxed and happy. Then Jason takes the cordless clippers and stands by Jazzee’s shoulder and turns them on. jason familarises Jazze with the clippers using his hand as point of contact
“Can you see how Jazzee is too busy looking at everything else and ignoring me, so I need to keep asking for him to move and change direction until he actually focuses on me and starts to listen. This is his problem under saddle, so this ground work will help” Jason chases Jazzee a little out of the circle and then asks for a change of rein, then another, then another change of direction, then another. Eventually after a few minutes, Jazzee actually has his focus finally on Jason and not on the

a soft touch. Once he is good with this Jason puts the clippers in the hand he is rubbing Jazzee with so he feel’s the vibration of the clippers through the familiarity of Jason’s hand.
Jazzee doesn’t seem to bothered by the noise, so Jason is able to then touch Jazzee shoulder with his near hand and the clippers in the other, so that Jazzee associates the noise with
“It’s important to work both sides of the horse. Most horses are naturally one sided, exasperated by the fact that we as humans tend to do most things off the left hand side of the horse, so with any groundwork you need to do things evenly”
Jazee ready to have a haircut
Jazzee seems to be accepting the clippers quite happily and Jason is able to move all over Jazzee body with no issues. “If you do come across tension and resistance, you need to work with the horse and try not to remove the source of pressure until they accept it which in this case is the clippers tension, which in the case of a horse being clipper shy. You want the horse to work on the ‘pressure – reward’ concept, which we worked on earlier on in the circle work” “However” and Jason is quick to add: if the problem is too great for your knowledge, then don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help and advice” Finally, should your horse have a behavioural problem, Jason always recommends looking at the whole picture from health through to the tack used. Jason feeds Aloeride to those resident horses because of the supplement’s wide reaching benefits from helping to boost a compromised immune system through to helping support a good digestive system.

Spice up
TOP T IPS !
your schooling! Courtesy of retailer Shadow Horse, international dressage rider Michael Eilberg gives his top tips on adding some spice to your everyday schooling… If you think your flatwork is boring, then the likelihood is that your horse will do too! The key to a happy horse is to include plenty of variety in his work, so by introducing some new exercises, you can not only improve your horse’s way of going, but also help develop your riding skills and keep both of you interested! If your flatwork is becoming dull, then sometimes adding in pole work can help. You can use poles in a variety of ways, to help create more energy and lift or to help lengthen a horse’s stride. A good exercise is to fan your poles out on a circle and ride more to the inside of the circle for a more collected trot, then more to the outside for longer length strides. This is quite a difficult exercise for the rider too as you have to ride accurately and maintain softness and a good rhythm throughout. This is a great exercise in preparation for your dressage tests and helping the horse develop muscle. Some riders find that setting poles out in a square helps discipline them into riding more accurately and also helps improve your rider aids, as again this is an exercise which requires control and skill in order to keep your horse within ‘the box’. Lunging your horse over raised poles on a circle can also help create more cadence and lift to your horse’s paces or adding a cross pole can add interest to your lunge work, even if you don’t fancy leaving the ground when sat aboard. Going around and around in circles will be boring, so start to concentrate on riding clear patterns and changing your pace at the markers. For example riding a figure of eight in canter, then walking on the centre line then up into canter will encourage you to ride your horse straight and check if he is listening to your aids! You can develop this exercise by interspersing trot transitions at each end marker as well and using the shape to ride a series of collected and medium trot or canter depending on your horse’s stage of training. Riding transitions are key to engaging your horse’s hind legs, but as well as direct transitions eg: walk-trot-walk, you can also ride working trot –medium-working trot, again riding lots of transitions, from walktrot-walk, trot-canter-trot and so on, making sure that your horse ‘jumps off your leg aid’ I probably ride hundreds of transitions when I ride, because it really does help the horse engage his hind leg and create more energy and thus more expression within the paces. A good exercise to ride is to go from working trot to medium trot and back again. Do this all in rising trot if you have any tension in your seat but if your seat is independent, then you can ride working trot in sitting then rise in the medium trot. Think about really ‘opening’ up the trot in the medium, and then using half halts, bringing the horse into working trot again. You can ride these large around the arena or across a serpentine, concentrating on straightness and softness. Another great exercise is to ride a 10 metre circle in trot in the corner of your arena then ride across the diagonal in medium trot, which helps set up the horse and use the same principle but ask for shoulder-in down the long side.

You are what you eat! When it comes to feed allergies, you can often find yourself chopping and changing, only to discover that you may lose one allergen but, because the nature of a complete feed, find one allergen replaced by another… Han Van De Braak MD of equine aloe vera supplement Aloeride explains further…
Few owners give their horse a feed and then see an immediate allergic reaction, this would be an ‘IgE’ immune response, instead they often grapple with the slow onset ‘IgG’ response which often makes it difficult to link the trigger to the response. Also, some animals can be allergic to various components within their diet and this allergy can develop over in later life, causing the horse owner further confusion. One of the biggest offenders is the cereal family, such as barley, maize, wheat and oat. It’s also important to note that a feed crop harvested closely to the soil (moisture content being the culprit) or dried too late, also increases the likelihood of moulds like Aspergillus or Penecillium, which produce aflatoxins, which again can cause problems! In addition, some horses can also react to other additions to the feed, such as oils or even garlic. Symptoms to a food allergy can range from mild lumps all over the horse’s body through to severe symptoms such as a swollen airway and of course if breathing is compromised, urgent veterinary treatment should be sought. Aloeride can help in many ways where allergies are concerned and beyond eliminating the allergic feed trigger,
30 HorseScene
Aloeride has been found to be especially effective as a buffer against slow allergic reactions. Allergies also can be more than ‘just the immune system disliking a substance’; very often it can be a relative enzyme deficiency leaving feed uncleaved and thus becoming an irritant. An irritated gut walls does two things: increases the risk of reactive contractions (colic) and increases likelihood of leaky gut (as the gaps between enterocytes widen). The latter opens the gate for macromolecules to venture where they shouldn’t; this disrupts tissue and function anywhere blood takes them. Pure organic equine Aloeride is easy to feed and taste-free, and is also beneficial to skin, coat and hoof condition and general well being – ensuring that your horse or pony has great support the natural way. Finally, if you suspect that your horse does have a food allergy, there are a few things you can do to determine the cause. The first is to eliminate whatever the horse is allergic to, by (slowly) stripping back the horse’s diet to determine which ingredient is the culprit and then removing it from the horse’s diet and hopefully preventing further out breaks. Other options available are blood cell counts and laboratory tests, however as with any equine medical concern, I would always suggest speaking to your vet before taking any direct action.

Rambo Grand Prix Dustbuster Stable Sheet The first thing I noticed about this rug whilst testing it was the quality. It is made up of a ribbed polyester outer with a silky polyester lining - which protects the mane and shoulders from rubbing. When I put it on my horse it was a great fit - allowing plenty of movement, and the straps are very good quality meaning that nothing came undone during the night. It is thin enough to wear in the warmer late summer weather, but is also plenty warm enough for a cooler night. It did it’s job and gave my horse a silky finish - it lifted the dirt and loose hairs from his coat and left him with a gleam. I will definitely be using this on my horse in preparation for a show - as it certainly takes away the elbow grease from the grooming! At £80.00 I would highly recommend this rug to anyone looking to get that sparkle on their horse’s coat.

Wandlite LED tube light I always dread this time of year when it Shirts with style! gets darker earlier as I have no electricity in my stable, However, This shirt brings a feminine edge and brilliant this year I was asked to test the tailoring into a fashionable equestrian shirt. It is a smallest size of the Wandlite slimmer silhouette which is extremely flattering whilst LED tube light, (it is advised being practical. I wore this both at the yard and also around that you would need a 1,000mm or 2,000mm tube to town and received many compliments due to it’s bold print and light an outbuilding or stable). Testing this was a very fun girly colour. Since testing this shirt I have become a fan of the exciting prospect for me as being on a yard with no Freddie Parker Collection and look forward to seeing the rest of the electricity in the winter means the small amount of collection for Autumn/Winter 2014 as if it follows the style and quality daylight I get is spent doing chores rather than of this shirt it will be a winner! Priced at £65.00 this is a must have for spending time riding. The tube light can be run on your wardrobe. multiple choices of power, including solar powered panels, generator, 12v car/truck/tractor For more information www.freddieparker.com lead battery or even a car cigarette lighter socket as well as mains electricity. I tested this from a car battery and was surprised at how bright and powerful even the smallest light was. I didn’t need to worry about using this around my horse as it is tough, durable and also water resistant. I will definitely be ordering more starting at only £30.00 they are invaluable and with the option to clip them together to make them even brighter, I won’t have to worry about not having electricity again.

Do you suffer with back pain for love of riding your horse? We all get aches and pains, as we get older, especially if we have endured riding accidents along the way. The love of riding and the feeling of freedom and being at one with your horse is a magnificent emotion and one I personally always wanted to feel. However, after a serious riding accident fracturing my back, riding became a painful experience. If my horse put an unexpected spook in, or tripped, or I temporarily lost my seat and came down hard onto the saddle, it would cause me weeks of pain and lots of physiotherapy. I toyed with the idea of inventing a seat pad, I even bought several, but not one worked for my posture or gave me pain relief. Out of the blue a man knocked on my door asking me if I could help him with a horse related problem and it turned out he owned two factories that made pressure relief pads for disabled people. I told him about my problem and he came back the next day with many types of memory foams for me to try. It gave me the incentive to make one for myself. The first day of testing was very fruitful and gave me ample proof of the benefit of “Shock Absorbency” and which type of memory foam to use for my design. As I trotted around the arena on my horse, I instantly felt pain free for the first time in years! My back from top to bottom felt relaxed and normal, even my riding position seemed to return instantly. After I fractured my back, I tended to hold myself in a brace position for fear of sudden unwelcomed movement. To feel secure again was and is great feeling for me.
“
I am an advanced endurance rider who has been competing for 6 years. I have been using the seat saver pad from Stable Environment for the past 18 months and it has been a revelation. The lower back pain which I had suffered from after riding, the consequence of a car accident 14 years ago, vanished. I really began to appreciate how much it helped when recently I rode a horse without it and the lower back pain returned with a vengeance. It is easy to fit, use and keep clean. I would highly recommend using it from any age to help prevent or relieve back ache.

Suddenly my horse leapt over an object, which he saw before I did, I lost my seat and came crashing down onto the saddle in a most undignified manner. With my back being in such a fragile state, that sort of impact would have put me out of action for at least a week. I sat there for a moment expecting the normal unbearable shooting pains up my spine and down my legs, but nothing happened. Since that day I have not looked back, I have been able to ride without any impact problems occurring from my seat, plus no after pain, so I can ride more frequently. After trialling this seat pad for well over a year I can honestly say I feel like I have my life back again. I live in a very hilly part of West Yorkshire and coming down hills would often flex my spine with the slight slipping motion in the saddle. Once my seat bones have found their gravity in the seat pad, there is little to no flexing movement in my coccyx area (which again could be very painful). Because the seat pad moulds to your own body shape, I think if anything, it lets you feel your horse’s movement more so than sitting on a rigid leather saddle. This memory foam does not spring up quickly like normal foam, hence no loss of feeling when trotting up and down, it stays in position for several seconds. It also remains flexible in sub zero temperatures, so no need to worry about leaving it in cold barns or tack rooms. Because memory foam distributes weight, it helps take a certain amount pressure of impact off the horses back. Fabrics and fastenings I have chosen in the design for this pad are top quality and have a luxurious look and feel. The pad was designed by myself, Mags Roxburgh, and they are made in Great Britain by Griffin Nuumed.
