Michal Burry is an American physician, investor, and hedge fund manager. He famously predicted the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-2010 and actor Christian Bale played him in the movie The Big Short. Towards the end of the film it showed that Burry was now analysing another commodity – water. It’s an important observation, as water scarcity already affects every continent. According to the UN, around one-fifth of the world’s population live in areas of physical scarcity. Population growth could cause global demand for water to outpace supply by mid-century if current levels of consumption continue. Therefore, tank cleaning operators are doing their best to implement ways of saving water and introducing environmentally-friendly pieces of equipment to their facilities. In this issue, we explore this theme throughout the magazine. As well as the usual selection of case studies, this edition focuses specifically on tank cleaning stations in Spain. We have a special tank cleaning station directory on this region. Elsewhere, we are pleased to announce that this is our largest issue of TCM. As always, we hope you enjoy the magazine and welcome your feedback. Liz Gyekye Editor

Hoyer expands IBC tentacles Transport and logistics service provider Hoyer Group has expanded its intermediate bulk container (IBC) business by purchasing certain crucial assets of a major tank container rental company. Under the deal, the Hamburgbased business has taken over France-based CCR’s brand and its IBC leasing activity, opening up new markets and geographies for Hoyer. The acquisition will see CCR’s fleet of 14,000 containers added to the 27,000 vessels in Hoyer’s IBC fleet. CCR also
offers additional services in the container leasing field like management, transport, cleaning, maintenance and repair, which will strengthen Hoyer’s offering. Through the acquisition, Hoyer will augment its market position in Europe and will gain synergies to develop its activities in China and the US. CCR’s strong presence in the cosmetics industry will also allow Hoyer, whose IBC logistics mainly focus on the chemicals and food industries, to access a new market segment. Stephanie Muhs, head of IBC Logistics
at Hoyer, said: “We are delighted to have the CCR company on board, which also represents high-quality solutions. An especially pleasing aspect is that CCR’s employees, who were already working in the IBC segment in Paris, Seattle and Kempen and possess enormous knowhow, are now part of the Hoyer team.” The CCR business will form part of Hoyer’s newly-created Netlog business unit, where the group has focused its asset management operations since January 2016. Financial details were not disclosed. z
Russian rail Quala close to finalising major giant signs renovations at Texas facility agreement with Uralchem Russia-based United Wagon Company’s tank container division, Unicon 1520, has signed a contract with Uralchem-Trans to transport chemicals in Russia and Eastern Europe – the company’s first deal since its inception in April. United Wagon Company said that Unicon’s container fleet is highly adaptable and is suited to transport a wide range of chemicals, food products and liquefied petroleum gas. Victor Ivanov, executive director at Unicon 1520, said: “We are proud to have Uralchem-Trans as our first customer. I am confident that we will be able to meet the exacting requirements, which are in place for the transportation of hazardous freights in tank containers.” Alexey Koloshyan, deputy director of transport at UralchemTrans, added: “United Wagon Company sets standards on the rail transport market and we expect that cooperation with its transportation subsidiary will improve the quality of our carrying operations, optimising cost and delivery times for our goods.” z

US-based bulk transportation cleaning firm Quala is close to finalising major renovations at its Beaumont, Texas, facility. As TCM went to press, the company announced that it was due to wrap up renovations by the end of July. The renovations include new, open customer office space in addition to significant upgrades of the facility’s equipment which enable full wash, steam, and flare capabilities. “We’re eager to show current and potential customers what our improved facility now has to offer,” said Eric Speiser, vice-president of sales and marketing at Quala. “Upgrading our facility in Beaumont supports Quala’s overall growth strategy of diversifying and enhancing our capabilities to serve a growing market. These new renovations will provide options which were previously unavailable in the Beaumont area.” In addition to new office space and
operational capabilities, the renovations include a remodelled drivers’ lounge and a large expansion of secured tenant parking. Elsewhere, Quala announced the addition of Cargill’s Sweetener Certification to their food-grade wash services in Chicago. The Cargill certified washes are set to begin immediately and will include services for both liquid sweetener and dry bulk sweetener cleaning. The new certification accompanies the Chicago facilities’ existing ADM, Diageo, and Kosher approvals. “Adding the Cargill Sweetener Certification to our food-grade services in the Midwest will prove valuable to our existing and prospective customers,” said Eric Speiser, vice-president of sales and marketing at Quala. “We’re extremely proud to have earned this certification. The approval of Cargill is an affirmation that Quala is continuing to meet the highest standards in the industry.” z

VTG Rail Russia expands Russian business VTG Rail Russia has purchased 220 chemical tank wagons for the transportation of caustic soda from a subsidiary of United Wagon Company. The move both enlarges and diversifies VTG’s fleet. The wagons were built in 2014 and are hired out until 2024 to RusVinyl, a Russian-Belgian joint venture whose shareholders are SIBUR (Russia) and Solvay (Belgium). VTG has taken over this hire contract in conjunction with its acquisition of the wagons. In November 2016, the wagon hire company had already bought 15 modern, insulated tank wagons to carry caustic soda. These were hired out on a long-term contract to Khimprom, one of the largest chemical companies in Russia. In the first half of 2017, VTG Rail Russia has continued to ramp up its activities in this wagon segment, supplying a further 15 caustic soda tank wagons to Khimprom in February. “We are very pleased that two prominent Russian chemical companies of the calibre of RusVinyl and Khimprom are convinced by what we have to offer,” said Oksana Janssen, head of the business line VTG Rail Russia. “That has given us a point of entry to a very attractive market, and we have taken a major strategic step toward expanding our Russian business.” This latest investment increases VTG Rail Russia’s fleet to a total of 3,300 wagons. z

Boasso Global buys tank container cleaning arm of Den Hartogh Louisiana-based Boasso Global, an international tank container and depot service provider, has acquired Netherlands-based Den Hartogh’s European depot and tank cleaning services business – Den Hartogh Cleaning. The move, which follows within a year of the firm’s acquisition of UK-based Isotank Group, adds facilities in three countries to its ranks. Over time Den Hartogh Cleaning will transition to the Boasso Global brand. “We are pleased to add the Den Hartogh Cleaning business to Boasso Global’s expanding network of best in class terminals in Europe,” commented Tony Morsovillo, President of Boasso. “This high quality, state-of-the-art tank cleaning, repair and depot services business, is a perfect fit with the culture of customercentric excellence that Boasso is known for in the US and the UK This acquisition, in concert with Isotank Group UK, provides the ideal international platform
for the continued expansion of our global footprint to meet the needs of our customers and the growing ISO tank industry.” Den Hartogh Cleaning provides tank cleaning, repair and other depot services from four locations strategically located in the Netherlands, Spain, and France, addressing some of the primary chemical markets in Western Europe. The acquisition further expands Boasso’s footprint into continental Europe to complement its recent acquisition of Isotank Group UK. “Den Hartogh is proud of what it, together with its employees and customers, has achieved with Den Hartogh Cleaning. However, we are convinced that the new ownership will provide the opportunity to grow the cleaning and repair business. We wish Boasso and the former employees of Den Hartogh Cleaning every success in this new endeavour,” commented Pieter Den Hartogh, group managing director at Den Hartogh. z

HTC opens base in Antwerp Tank cleaning specialist HTC has opened a base in the port of Antwerp. The new facility is exclusively reserved for the internal cleaning of intermodal tank containers, which are deposited in the depot, according to Transport Online. The facility is based within a “chemicals cluster” in the port of Amsterdam. HTC worked with Kärcher to build the installation. In a statement, HTC said: “The task was clear: various types of tank containers have to be automatically cleaned internally (semi) with high-pressure tank washing. The aim here is that two-tank containers can be cleaned at the same time, and that, depending on the type of contamination and the degree of contamination, a choice can be made from a variety of washing programmes.” Kees Wagtmans, managing director at Kärcher Belux, said: “I am particularly proud of the performances we have delivered our people from the ward tank and silo cleaning with this project. We are delighted to add this beautiful project to our reference.” z

Nexiot develops smart sensor system for Bertschi’s tank containers Swiss telematics firm Nexiot is customising its zero-maintenance smart sensor system for Bertschi Group’s tank containers, to monitor the temperature of dangerous goods and help ensure safe delivery of consignments. The data is then sent to a control system, enabling Bertschi Group to monitor the temperature of the product in the tank, as well as the steam pipes which are used to heat the cargo, in real time. Nexiot’s smart sensors harvest energy from the environment, which makes them self-sustaining, and enables them to update the control system
with messages down to every five minutes. Bertschi is a global logistics service provider for the chemical industry, specialising in both liquids and dry bulk products, and transports hazardous cargo, some of which needs to travel within a specific temperature band. “Any means by which we can further raise the bar regarding safety gets priority at Bertschi, and having continuous and detailed information about the containers allows us to be certain that everything is well within safe operating conditions,” said Markus Berner, head of digital logistics at Bertschi Group.

“Automated alerts on deviations provide us with one more layer of safety on top of all the existing procedures and mechanisms. The very same measurements are also invaluable for guaranteeing that the cargo, which often includes delicate chemical compounds, reaches its destination within the optimal temperature band and in perfect condition. We have very tough requirements for the capabilities, ruggedness, cost, and maintainability of devices in the field. In my opinion, particularly regarding energy autonomy and frequency of updates, the technology of Nexiot speaks for itself.” Nexiot’s director of marketing and sales Daniel MacGregor said the sensor system, which is also being installed across the entire fleet of rail wagons for wagon hire giant VTG, was ideal for mobile assets with no native power sources. “Connecting rail wagon and tank container fleets to extract critical data brings similar challenges and opportunities, as both asset types are non-powered,” he said. “Our self-sustaining technology has overcome the battery problems which were a major barrier to monitoring these sorts of mobile assets and made critical data available in real time, so that our customers can make informed business decisions and ensure their cargo arrives safely and on time.” Nexiot is trialling a new system of self-sufficient sensors, mounted onto the tank containers, communicating temperature data wirelessly to its Machine to Machine (M2M) communication devices, also installed on the tank containers. Berner said that Bertschi is seeing increased demand from customers for real-time updates and estimates, who use the data to optimise their own logistics chain. “Nexiot provides a full-featured but specialised platform which can be integrated with sector specific software,” he said. “This is in line with our digitisation strategy – more data all by itself is of limited use; it is the links and connections that bring real value.” z

Wascosa unveils new system CS Leasing to transport chemical announces new products shareholder CS Leasing has announced that Maas Capital had acquired a significant minority shareholding in the company. It reported that Maas Capital had acquired all of the shares that were previously held in the company by CARU Containers and also made an additional capital investment to support the future growth of the company. CS Leasing management and founding shareholders have successfully established the company as a key supplier in the specialised container leasing market. Maas Capital has now joined the partnership of TCG (Transportation Capital Group) and the company management team, providing CS Leasing with a strengthened longterm platform for future growth. z
Wascosa, a Swiss-based manufacturer of freight rail cars, has launched the Wascosa flex freight system, which transports chemical products. This flexible solution has been developed with BASF and combines tank containers, rail and autonomous driving. The tank container has approximately the same load capacity as a tank wagon but can be removed from the wagon. A carrier specially developed for this container makes it possible to expose the container to a driverless transport vehicle. As a result, the transport processes on the factory premises can be automated. The tank containers can be stored in a container storage area. Since the containers can be transported both on the rail and on the road, delivery
times are shortened from the station to the loading points. This makes the rail car available for other transports. Karel Smits, manager of VDL Automated Vehicle, said: “We have been talking about automatic driving for a very long time and we have also been active in this area for a long time. But it is only at Transport Logistic 2017 that we have the impression that the market and the technical possibilities are coming together now.’ Miriam Walter, manager Rail & Sight Services BASF, said: “We especially liked the fact that many visitors interested in our concept were here. Our new logistic solution brings more flexibility and makes rail more competitive and innovative for companies. Working with Wascosa and the other partners is a lot of fun.” z

Van den German tank cleaning Bosch now firm TTC expands service provides flexitanks Van den Bosch has extended its logistic services by providing flexitanks alongside its existing offering of tank containers and road tankers. Paul van de Vorle, director business development at Van den Bosch, said: “We notice a growing interest in flexitanks to supplement our current activities. That is why we have decided to extend our services and include flexitanks in our deep-sea activities. In combination with tank containers, we now offer a complete concept for the shipment of liquid bulk products.” Flexitanks are suitable for the transport of liquid food and chemicals (non-IMO). Popular export products, such as oil, wine, latex and glycerine are already frequently shipped in flexitanks. Van de Vorle added: “From strategic locations in Europe and Africa, flexitanks can be shipped to destinations worldwide. The huge advantage is that flexitanks are for single use only. Therefore, a return load is not required and customers benefit from favourable rates based on one way use.” In a statement, Van den Bosch said: “Flexitanks have a capacity up to 24,000 litres, so the payload is significantly higher compared to alternative forms of transport, such as IBCs and drums. It leads to cost savings and a reduced number of transport movements. There is also no risk of contamination as the tanks are single use. It is also an environmentallyfriendly mode of transport.“z
Cologne-based tank cleaning company TTC, which specialises in the cleaning of food, silo and chemical tanks, is expanding its business. The company announced that it will now handle certified cleaning of intermediate bulk container (IBC) and ASF containers, including residual material disposal, maintenance and repair. “Upon request, we
also test the sterility of the containers and carry out the periodic inspection required for the transport of hazardous materials,” said Ulrich Bresser, TTC’s managing director. In a statement, the company said: “After the work is completed, all documentation and certificates are forwarded directly to the customer’s warehouse or disposition.” z

Stolt-Nielsen reports Q2 results Stolt-Nielsen has reported its unaudited results for the second quarter ended 31May, 2017. Net profit attributable to shareholders in the second quarter was $15.6 million (€13.6m), with revenue of $500.8 million, compared with a net profit of $15.2 million, with revenue of $475.7 million, in the first quarter of 2017. Net profit attributable to shareholders for the first six months was $30.8 million, with revenue of $976.5 million, compared with $68.2 million, with revenue of $942.8 million, in the first half of 2016. Commenting on the company’s results, Niels G. StoltNielsen, CEO of Stolt-Nielsen, said: “SNL’s second-quarter results were disappointing overall, but in line with both our expectations and our results in the first quarter, as the fundamentals of our markets remained largely unchanged. At Stolt Tankers, the softening of the chemical market that we have seen since the third quarter of last year continued, but at a slower rate. “While the demand side growth remains at historical levels, the pressure we see on rates is a result of excess supply from new ships entering the market. Results
at Stolthaven Terminals were much in line with the prior quarter, with actions to improve sustained long-term performance continuing. The bright spot in the quarter was Stolt Tank Containers, which reported much improved results, up from the seasonally weak first quarter. “Stolt Sea Farm (SSF) posted weaker operating results, excluding the impact of fair value adjustments. Following SSF’s seasonally strong first quarter, consistent production of large turbot continued to drive sales volumes, though prices were down in the second quarter. We were also pleased to see that the growth of sole from our farm in Iceland now seems to be improving. “Our outlook remains cautious. We do not expect a significant improvement in the chemical tanker market until most of the current orderbook has been delivered, which, barring any new orders, is expected to be in the second half of 2018. For Stolthaven Terminals, we expect gradual improvements in earnings going forward, and for STC we expect market conditions in line with those of this latest quarter.” z

The tank containers are 45’ (13.7 metres long with a basic volume of 53m³ or 63m³) and 52’ (15.8 metres with a basic volume of 73m³) with a load capacity of 66 to 67 tonnes. 90 units and 2 prototypes will be delivered this year. The balance of the order will be delivered in 2018. Commenting on the order, Filip Van Hool, CEO at Van Hool NV, said: “Just like our ‘Bus&Car’ business unit (BU), Van Hool’s second pillar of business, particularly our ‘Industrial Vehicles’ BU, demonstrates the strengths that Van Hool offers as a company: working together with customers to develop transport solutions for people and goods that are good for the environment, good for our customers, and thus good for the Van Hool group.
Van Hool gets big order from BASF “This has been our mission for the last 70 years, and this is the way we will go in the future. This specific order for BASF confirms the BU’s position on the world market as a leading designer and manufacturer of tank containers for the transport of liquids and gases.” Erik Taeymans, director of the Industrial Vehicles BU at Van Hool, added: “The collaboration between BASF and Van Hool has led to the development of a revolutionary concept that will fundamentally change how chemical products are transported. The tank container developed by BASF and Van Hool is optimised for rail transport and

will possibly lead to a further shift of chemical goods transport from road to railway. This shift will have a positive impact on the road congestion user and the environment. Van Hool has managed to secure this important order thanks to the experience, knowledge and dedication of our workforce.” BASF’s aim in introducing this new system is to make conventional rail transport just as quick and flexible as combined transport without losing the advantage of the existing high load capacities of conventional rail tank transport. In a statement, the company said: “With a volume of 63000 litres and a maximum safe load of 66 tonnes, the 45’ tank container offers double the load capacity of the tank containers currently in general use; similar to that of a chemical tank wagon. “The Van Hool expertise with 20 ‘, 30’ and 45 ‘tank containers has been the basis for the development of the new 45’ container The 45’ tank containers can be used for rail transport, inland waterway transport and can also be transported, in empty condition, over the road.” z

TANK CLEANING IN SPAIN
Who is ANLIC? An introduction to Spain’s national association of tank cleaners The National Association of Interior Tank Cleaners (ANLIC) was established in Spain on the basis of articles agreed amongst five tank cleaning companies, the founding members of the association. At present, ANLIC counts 50 members located in the different autonomous regions of the Spanish mainland. In the near future, ANLIC’s management is looking for more tank cleaners to join the association as active members. ANLIC is at the same time an active member of the European Federation of Tank Cleaning Organisations (EFTCO). In fact, ANLIC was one of its six founding members back in 1999 in Brussels. ANLIC participates actively in EFTCO’s meetings and organisation in the different European member locations. In the organogram at EFTCO.org one can learn about the
national tank cleaning associations that established EFTCO and about all the other members that followed in the successive years. Objectives ANLIC was established in 1997 with the main objective to assess, support and motivate all its members to achieve a quality service with environmental respect in their companies. ANLIC endeavours to stimulate the solidarity amongst members through the exchange of information to avoid any false competition. The other objective is to pursue legislation at national level and within the regional autonomies, ensuring obligations are met. z

Challenging illegal activity in tank cleaning
Lavados Peña started operating in the 1960s
Whether legally or environmentally, Lavados Peña believes in following high standards The foundation of Lavados Peña goes back to the beginning of the 1960s, when Don Lorenzo Peña Martín abandoned the world of logistics to offer maintenance services to other’s transporters. There followed a period during which the company evolved from exterior washing, oil changes and lubrication to the present, where they have become a well-known washing station in terms of technology and customer service, with machinery of the latest generation both for the external washing and internal vaporisation of cisterns and for the purification of their discharges. Lavados Peña always strives to carry out its business scrupulously, and with respect to the environment. The company’s main activity took a radical turn after its incorporation more than a decade ago into the National Association of Interior Sinks of Cisterns (ANLIC, in turn belonging to EFTCO), directing its efforts towards
18
the interior washing and vaporisation of cisterns. This didn’t see the company abandon its activities in the external washing of vehicles, for which Lavados Peña has its own patents in washing with water jets of high pressure, as well as the usual truck brushes. Drivers can find there various services at their complete disposal: showers, a waiting room with television, a fax service,

free Wi-Fi, refreshments and a restaurant with a good menu just 100 metres away. Lavados Peña cares about the image of its customers, that is why the company includes an exterior washing with all services of interior cleaning without any additional cost. The company’s prices are set according to the specific work that needs to be carried out, understanding the specific issues of the transporters and always offering special rates based on volume of work. Illegal activity Lavados Peña faces the future with optimism and trust that the transport sector will once again lead the market, but they are very concerned about the rise of illegal activity inside the internal lavage of cisterns. They believe that from washing stations and from serious transport companies, what is demanded is that the administration takes action

COMPANY PROFILE at European level, due to the high demands that come with being able to issue it, overcoming severe audits and quality controls in companies. Lavados Peña is convinced that if the government took the step of stamping all documents with a stamp by the state, it would give them the authority of “officials” and provide the same character to the facilities that strictly comply with the regulations, clearly identifying them and informing carriers that the use of unauthorised facilities could be considered as an environmental crime. Equating ECD with CMR {EU regulation on the use of substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction) would be an essential step for such control. The ECD has imposed itself on the other washing documents because the shippers have decided it should, but there are gaps, particularly when the load in question is not delicate. Washers are used that are not registered as such to “reduce costs,” without realising that in the medium term this will harm everyone. Sometimes they are nothing more than hoses in a gas station or a simple garage, pouring the water without any control, with consequent detriment to the environment. Lavados Peña believes that it is the industry itself, through its departments of quality, that should reject those cisterns that do not comply with the legislation. All the parties involved should seek a solution that satisfies all and is not disruptive for any sector because the investments are very high and there could come a time that the laundries are not profitable. Then where will those cisterns be washed? z

on the matter and looks after the safety of consumers by monitoring the entire chain, both food and chemical, with inspections of all recognised washing facilities following the recommendations of a work group composed of porters, transporters, tank cleaning stations and administration. To date, this has not been done and these constant illegal practices are highly contaminating. Lavados Peña also believes that the administration should consult existing associations to inform them of establishments that operate outside the legal system. It is a fact that both the chemical and food industries are demanding thorough control over tank cleaning stations through the European Cleaning Document (ECD). To this day it is the only washing certificate recognised

Grand opening
Stolt Tank Containers has opened its 20th depot – the question is why? In April, Stolt Tank Containers (STC) officially opened the Fusion Stolt Tank Services (FSTS) depot in Laem Chabang, Thailand. STC’s global network of depots now consists of 20 facilities, each providing cleaning, maintenance, repair and storage services, complete with environmentally-friendly systems for water management and even, in some cases, power generation. Yet the question some ask is, why? Why does the world’s largest provider of logistics and transportation services for door-to-door shipments of bulkliquid chemicals and food-grade products maintain its own worldwide network of owned and joint-venture depots? None of the other operators in the space do it. So why does STC? Michael W. Kramer, president of STC, answers: “Our depot network gives us direct control over the handling, cleaning and maintenance of our fleet, and that allows us to deliver the quality, reliability and safety – for people and the environment – that our customers demand. Our customers know that that their tanks are inspected, maintained and cleaned at STC’s

strategic objective. In 2016, STC’s new depots in India – Mumbai and Kandla – completed their first full year of operations. In Saudi Arabia, two new STC depots – in Jubail and Dammam – are expected to open in 2018, with a third depot planned for Jeddah. In Europe, Vado, Italy will be the site of a new facility before the end of 2017. “Our depot network allows us to capture a tremendous amount of our volume, and to handle that volume in a proper and cost-effective manner,” says Kramer. “When the three depots in Saudi Arabia are up and running, we will be funneling a majority of our total global volume through our own depots – and that’s huge.” Sites for the depots are carefully situated in strategic locations. Kramer provides some historical perspective on the new Laem Chabang facility: “The main port and chemical complex in Thailand was for many years in Bangkok. But by the late 1990s, the handwriting was on the wall. Ships were getting too big for the harbour and, with the growth in both regional and long-haul trades, congestion was becoming

a serious problem. And that’s what ultimately drove the development of the port at Laem Chabang. Over the years, we began migrating shipments down to Laem Chabang, along with the steamship lines, because it was clear that’s where the future was.” STC made its first investment in Thailand in 2011 – a joint venture tank container refurbishing facility known as Laem Chabang Tank Services (LCTS). The venture proved to be a success. “LCTS cost effectively produces like-new tanks of outstanding quality,” says Greg Vinson, director Asia Pacific for STC. “To date, we’ve refurbished nearly 2,000 tanks at this facility, so it’s been a real winner for us.” Opportunities and challenges As Laem Chabang continued to grow, port operations increased. Chemical and petrochemical complexes sprang up and expanded. Service and product ranges increased and tank container volumes soared. While the growth was welcome, it also presented challenges. “It was becoming increasingly clear that the local tank container depots weren’t keeping up with the market – and that was going to impact us over the
longer term if we didn’t act,” says Kramer. “And it wasn’t just a question of volumes. We were moving more and more high purity and food-grade products that required very high levels of cleanliness.” The demands of the market pointed to the need for an STCoperated depot in the port. “In the interests of our customers, we needed increased control over the tank-cleaning process and the treatment of wastewater – having our own depot in Laem Chabang would enable us to do that,” says Kramer. To get the project rolling, STC turned to Fusion Logistics, led by Sompong Sakesuwan and his son Kim. The Sakesuwan’s had served as STC’s exclusive Thai agents for many years, and were also partners in the LCTS facility. “By mid-2015, we had the design roughed out and our location selected: a 10,000 square metre site adjacent to LCTS, sharing a common entrance,” says Vinson. The proposal was welcomed by the Sakesuwans and the details of a deal quickly hammered out. Plans for the depot were prepared by Kim Sakesuwan and Grant Thomas, LCTS general manager, and executed by SmartTech, the contractor. Thomas now oversees the activities of both
LCTS and the depot, ensuring that the facilities operate to the consistent global standards maintained by STC. In a ceremony attended by key chemical and food producers, shippers and receivers, the Fusion Stolt Tank Services (FSTS) depot opened on 27 April, 2017. The state-of-the-art fullservice facility offers tank cleaning, repairs and storage. Steam heating is also available. Tank refurbishment continues to be available through LCTS. Key features of the depot include ten state-of-the-art bays for chemical tank cleaning, plus a completely segregated food-grade area, consisting of two tank cleaning bays housed in their own garage, and equipped and built to rigorous European food-grade standards. Other features include innovative systems for wastewater treatment and water-use management, and a fuel-efficient LPG-powered boiler that reduces the depot’s carbon footprint. “We are not aware of any other depot in all of Asia that is built to this standard; in fact, it is one of the greenest, most environmentally-friendly tank container depots in the world,” says Kramer. STC opened its first tank container depot in 1984. “After that, we never looked back,” says Kramer. “It took a while for it all to sink in – the full spectrum of advantages to having our own network – but the value to our customers and to STC cannot be disputed.” z

TECHNOLOGY
Automated system concepts
Modern tank cleaning in the chemical industry – efficient and compliant Interior cleaning of transport, storage and production containers in the chemical industry can only take place efficiently in compliance with applicable standards and depending on individual conditions. Choosing the correct cleaning technology depends on the type of contamination, shape and size of container, available access options and any components in the container. Cleaning with automated highpressure units in particular is now more widely used due to shorter production downtimes and related cost savings. The required degree of cleaning must be determined prior to container cleaning. Distinction is made here between visually clean containers, which are sufficient for similar products, chemically clean containers, if a tank inspection is due, and biologically clean containers. Essentially, the tank cleaning supply chain has a variety of standards they have to adhere to. This includes the SQAS (Safety and Quality Assessment System), a standard of the European Chemical Industry Council Cefic, as well as the ECD document (European Cleaning Document), issued jointly by the Deutschen Verband fßr Tankinnenreinigung e.V. (DVTI) and the European Federation of Tank Cleaning Organisations (EFTCO). The SQAS is intended for logistics service providers for hazardous products mainly for the assessment of quality, safety and environmental compatibility. In addition to the actual transport service, it also includes tank cleaning. The ECD document has established itself as an industry cleaning standard throughout Europe. Many food and chemical companies today require the ECD document before tankers or tank containers can be released for filling.

The control and system concept includes different options: from simple remote control through to operation via visualised touch panel or PCs integrated in technical control rooms
The food industry in particular is an essential part of the so-called HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points Concept), which, in turn, is a preventative system intended to ensure the safety of food products and consumers. In the

temperature, chemicals and cleaning duration must be taken into account. This means that nozzle pressure, flow rate, temperature, cleaning agent and

contact time must be balanced as far as possible. The nozzle pressure and flow rate initially determine the impact pressure. This largely serves to break open the dirt layer and dislodge it from the surface. Crucial for the removal of dislodged dirt is the cleaning medium flow rate. What needs to be clarified is whether a cleaning system that operates with high pressues of up to 200 bar is sufficient or if it is necessary to use ultra-highpressure technology with pressures up to 1,500 bar for stubborn dirt. Warm or hot water as well as alkaline cleaning agents can normally be used to
remove grease and products containing mineral oil. Other substances that swell or clump at high temperatures (e.g. protein, starch) are cleaned cold, whereas lime or amines can be removed with acidic cleaning agents. Other typical materials in the chemical industry such as plastic monomers, which react with water and decompose,
are cleaned with solvents. The cleaning duration must also be taken into account in order to keep the consumption of resources to a minimum. It is therefore necessary to keep the produced wastewater volume and disposal costs to a minimum, for example. Against this background, manual cleaning can normally be excluded. Automated cleaning systems are required in order to meet the increasingly high quality requirements of the chemical industry. On the whole, manual cleaning is also not permitted as cleaning personnel are often exposed to risks, e.g. harmful paint and solvent fumes. Manual cleaning
also involves high personnel costs. A modern high-pressure cleaning system mainly consists of four components. These components must be perfectly balanced to suit the particular application. 1. High-pressure supply The high-pressure units form the centrepiece of a container cleaning system. Different types are available depending on the cleaning medium and application. The decision here is whether a stationary or mobile system is the better solution. Where tanks and containers are spaced far apart, a mobile high-pressure pump is always preferable to avoid costly piping. In the paint and petrochemical industry in particular, where product is recirculated, it is important to ensure that the high-pressure pump is provided with special seals and a leakage return. Both prevent a risk to operating personnel and the environment. 2. System control The control and system concept includes various options that allow individual adaptation to customerspecific conditions: from simple remote control through to operation via visualised touch panel or PCs integrated in technical control rooms. Automatic cleaning programs enable the acquisition of operating and cleaning data. Via teleservice, simple service and maintenance can also be carried out by employees of the manufacturing company through external access to the system control.

TECHNOLOGY 3. Energy systems Depending on the type of contamination, warm or hot water generation is necessary. In some cases, it is necessary to use saturated steam (e.g. for preheating highly viscous substances) or hot air for drying. Energy systems and other components of the high-pressure cleaning system are subject to very high requirements for use in hazardous areas, in which case they must comply with the ATEX Product Directive 94/9/EC. Modern hot water systems should have an energy-saving mode to prevent the burner from cooling down between hot and cold water utilisation phases. Up to 7% energy can be saved compared to normal operation. A self-regulating control unit can additionally adjust the burner output to the water inlet temperature. This enables precise control of the set value, since fluctuating inlet temperatures are taken into account. 4. and ultra-high pressure applications that comply with these requirements. Since agitator vessels in the chemical industry often have numerous obstructions inside the tank, it is recommended to use spray heads with pivoting devices. These enable the interior cleaning head to be repositioned without having to be removed. Even corners and awkward areas in containers are reached with correct use and spray shadow formation prevented. As the high-pressure jet works in a “contactless” way, dirt entrainment is also reliably prevented. Added to these advantages are short cleaning times and low fresh water consumption. As a general rule: The earlier and more regular cleaning is carried out, the quicker the dirt can be removed. Particularly in the chemical industry, encrusted dirt layers involve longer cleaning times and as a consequence this results in longer production downtimes. Nonetheless, good cleaning results can be achieved by using ultra-high pressure technology at pressures between 500 and 3000 bar for removing stubborn dirt. Higher cleaning medium temperatures can lead to better cleaning results and reduce the cleaning time. However, these procedures can involve considerable costs. Solutions for increasing
economy and efficiency, e.g. using wastewater heat, should therefore also be taken into account in terms of their project-specific effectiveness. Numerous container cleaning solutions are offered today for diverse applications in the chemical industry. Before making a purchase, it is important to obtain a detailed analysis and advice from the system supplier who assists with the design of the cleaning system and optimises it together with the customer to meet specific requirements. An inspection of reference systems - in particular for the dimensioning and design of the system solution – can also be helpful. Today, industry and transport today can hardly do without modern system concepts. A customer-specific concept guarantees economical, efficient and compliant container cleaning. z

TANK CLEANING IN EUROPE
Conventional tank cleaning under pressure More and more tank cleaning facilities are shunning convential ways to clean a tank to save time and money
Nearly all deposits in tankers, containers, and tank wagons can be removed by high-pressure water. Conventional cleaning of containers and tanks of all types is in many cases very time consuming and the results are not always satisfactory. Automatic high-pressure cleaning therefore asserts itself more and more: A highpressure plunger pump presses water through the nozzles of the URACA tank cleaning head TWK with a pressure of up to 1,600 bar/23,200 psi. URACA is a well-known German manufacturer of high-pressure plunger pumps and high-pressure cleaning systems. The water jet cuts through the deposits and with its defined sequence of motion guarantees surface covering removal

The correct positioning of the tank cleaning head is essential for optimal cleaning of these dirt deposits. In relation to the rules stipulated in the ATEX directive, the tank cleaning heads can be used in all ex-zones (except in mining). In fact, they can be used in explosion endangered atmospheres caused by gases, vapours, mists, and dust. Cleaning the inside of tanks with high-pressure water is helpful to the environment. It does not require the use of chemicals, mechanical tools or boiling. The waste disposal of the accumulating cleaning water is limited to the separation of the cleaned-off products. Compared with conventional methods, highpressure cleaning is characterised by considerably shorter cleaning times and a better cleaning effect. The correct positioning of the tank cleaning head is essential for optimal cleaning. The positioning devices and reel systems, which are individually adapted to the tank geometry, enable the performance of a tank-specific cleaning sequence. Lance systems serve the purpose of positioning the tank cleaning head TWK. These are characterised by the fixed positioning of the tank cleaning
head in exact extension of the lance axis, both in vertical and slanted mounting position. The achievable stroke is 7m plus. The pressure-tight atmosphere when cleaning some chemicals in a tank cleaning container helps to enable “process integrated” cleaning. The cleaning process can be started immediately after draining off the product and does not require any preparations, i.e. cleaning takes place within the production atmosphere. Besides the improvement of product quality based on optimal cleaning results and low-energy consumption due to the avoidance of thick deposits, production downtimes are reduced to a minimum. The realisation of individual customised cleaning solutions enables quick and effective cleaning. Enhanced productivity and higher quality of the end product result in short payback periods. z

Making sense of it all: Process measuring
Improving performance through measurement: The application of lean manufacturing
good clean and earn money. Making profits because you eliminate production waste should make your business stronger and satisfy customer demands. Tackling waste
The tank cleaning industry today are scrambling to identify the most important measurements they can use to ensure that tank containers get a good clean and their organisations continue to grow. In fact, the industry has recently been having a lot of conversations about measuring the cleaning process. Certain customers are demanding process traceability. For instance, global agriculture, food and nutrition company Cargill has demanded this. Some industry organisations have touched on the issue whilst adhering to meet their industry standards and certification standards. Does this make any sense or will this be water under the bridge in a few years? Moreover, what does process measuring bring to you as a cleaning entrepreneur? This article aims to analyse the process measuring system and how it can impact on your business.
What is process monitoring? As part of a larger business process management initiative, business process monitoring enables an organisation to measure and analyse process performance to identify critical process problems proactively, using data to make decisions that will improve the speed, quality and efficiency of business processes. Background Most cleaning stations have decades of experience cleaning tank containers. They have survived without measuring. So, why would they want to do things differently now? This is a fair question and the answer should be because you want to deliver a

OPINION occur and this could result in devastating consumer recalls. Well-known bad incidents have occurred in the food industry. However, many incidents are not openly communicated. Furthermore, many of these incidents pass unnoticed as nine times out of ten a paper check is the only evidence sought after to check if a tank has been cleaned properly. All in all, there are major costs involved if customers get a poor clean and it is good to take a professional position when being part of the food supply chain. It is one of the reasons why the food industry now takes traceability so seriously. Process control Why do cargo owners prescribe cleaning processes? One of the main reasons is because they do not want to take risks and the cleaning industry does not always have access to a structured process approach to achieve optimal cleaning. Process measuring can help to improve cleaning processes. Process control can help you to ensure that the optimal process is also assured in execution. Many cargo owners are open to adopting a structured process control approach to eliminate waste in the process, if they understand that you are in control of your cleaning production process execution. This can make your cleaning station stand out from your competition.
and critical control points (HACCP) analysis do flag the cleaning process as a high risk, as it concerns direct product contact, a process done externally and is beyond direct process control. This creates professional connection and appreciation between cleaning stations and shippers, and cargo owners. Principles of measuring: Do not collect data without a plan. You can collect all kinds of data. This can result in long lists and beautiful graphs. However, if you do not have a plan how to process all this data, it is useless. After all, most of us are cleaning professionals, not data analysts. So, just placing sensors which capture data, without a plan on how to use this data is a waste of money and will create more frustration than joy. Do not drown yourself in data. Even if you have a good plan what you want to measure, do avoid drowning in data. An average cleaning bay produces some 2,500 cleans a year. You will not likely study all these tank cleans individually. So it is important to manage the exceptions
and work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to be in better control of your processes. Structured automated reports do help here. Use data to steer your actual production process. With the principles of lean manufacturing, measurements are used to guide production employees in their work. For example, this can be done as example with light-tower indicators showing them that a certain step is not progressing or is finished and another is to be done. These principles bring the more analytical process control directly towards the actual execution by the operators. The ProgressMonitor was developed by CleanSecure to introduce this and can be installed at both low and hightech cleaning installations. It is useful for stations which are operated manually, as well as for stations which execute cleaning based on PLC programming. z

Appreciation and level playing field Even if the (end) customer prescribes the cleaning process detailed above, it is important to do this in a fair way. How can you be sure that your rival is also living up the same process demands and not just declaring conformity by showing a cleaning certificate? Often the cheapest clean is a short one. So, being transparent on your longer cleaning process is not always a benefit. Especially when your competition is also providing a professional cleaning certificate, but is not transparent about the actual process. It is here where the shippers and cargo owners have a responsibility in the quality chain. More and more professional cargo owners are insisting on an electronic process of transparency. This is to ensure that the tank containers cleaned for transporting their products are cleaned well according to agreed requirements. It is also to validate the cleaning process prior to loading the tank containers. Correct hazard analysis

COMPANY PROFILE
Investing, inviting and innovating Whether it’s forging relationships with the best suppliers, getting involved in cuttingedge projects or spreading its message at trade shows, one Belgian tank cleaning company never seems to stand still
Car- & Truckwash (CTW) is a respected Belgian partner for the tank cleaning industry, with more than 30 years of technical knowledge and experience alongside a wealth of successfully realised projects at home and abroad. CTW develops and implements tank cleaning facilities for the internal cleaning of silo/bulk, chemicals, food, container, railway carriage, and IBC and process / CIP cleaning. Purchasing a tank cleaning is an investment. In order to help the possible investor with their purchase, CTW supports all its customers during the entire project to obtain a suitable tank cleaning installation adapted to all needs. Each cleaning project requires its own customised approach. CTW works only with the best suppliers, so we can offer our clients high-quality products. In exciting news, De Spoelhal in Geel (Province of Antwerp - Belgium) has chosen to work with CTW as a partner to build and equip their new tank cleaning building/installation. For
more than 30 years, De Spoelhal has been active in the internal cleaning of bulk /silo trucks and bulk containers.
The new installation will have: • Three washing lanes for bulk cleaning • Each washing lane is equipped with five washing heads • 2x CTW high-pressure tank cleaning units 306 litre/100 bar • 1x CTW high-pressure manual cleaning unit 70 litre/105 bar for manual cleaning • Low-pressure dosing pumps for automatic use • High-pressure dosing pumps for manual use • Dryer for all three washing lanes • CTW new operator panels equipped with the latest software version • Connection to Lynx software for the creation of washing programs and all other features.
Pushing forward Going hand in hand with the cleaning projects undertaken by CTW are a host of innovations and solutions. With the release of its new software, CTW has taken into consideration the request of some of its customers, namely by including up to ten steps in the washing program. Each separate step in the program can have its own temperature, etc. Furthermore, users can now monitor all data from the washing program on the screen, and all this data is saved and is available for graphs and other uses. The new software registers water flow, pressure, temperature and consumption of chemicals. The new installation will also be equipped with pressure pulse detection. Each pulse is equal to a certain quantity of chemical product and is

COMPANY PROFILE also a check for the chemical system. Software isn’t the only area where CTW is pushing forward and innovating new solutions. In late 2016, the company installed a new CIP/latex cleaning unit at Cotac Belgium, a member of Hoyer Group. This custom-built unit is developed for the use of three washing heads on two washing lanes. The CTW latex unit consists of the following parts: a buffer tank with steam heating, feeding pump, washing heads, membrane pump, filter and flow measurement. This unit is available in several sizes and executions, depending on the needs of the customer. To allow even better control, the unit is now equipped with the latest, state of the art radar level measurement. This extra feature will tell the operators when, at the end of the cleaning, the level in the tank dropped due to cleaning product that remained in the cleaned containers, resulting in a gain for Cotac. Elsewhere, CTW is now able to install a customised tank cleaning installation in a 20 or 40ft container. This whole technical installation will be prepared
and tested by CTW. These containers are very easy to transport and require less surface. To save extra space, users can, for example, opt to have the water reservoir on top of the container. Using this kind of installation can provide for fast and efficient tank cleaning. Out and about CTW is building new networks, working to showcase its solutions in new locations and build new, lasting partnerships. Last May, CTW exhibited, for the first time, at the Transport and Logistic Exhibition in Munich, Germany. Although CTW was located in hall six, at a reasonable distance from our colleagues, the exhibition was very successful with more than 100 contacts coming from all over the world, from China to South America. This will surely help the company to expand its business throughout the entire world. Presenting great opportunities and a big but rewarding challenge for the future. Looking ahead, CTW will be present at the Chimie Lyon exhibition in France,
from 20 until 21 September (Hall 4.1. Stand D49). Visitors to the company’s stand will be able to familiarise themselves with CTW’s tank cleaning installations. Free access tickets can be obtained from CTW by sending a e-mail with contact details to info@ctwcleaning.com. z For more information:

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Preventing accidents Working at height remains one of the prevalent causes of fatalities and major injuries The primary stated goal of any company is the welfare of its employees and the greater public. Of course it is. The company also needs to make money, satisfy shareholders, meet customer needs and be quick and efficient at what it does. That can sometimes put a lot of pressure on the “stated” primary goal. Cynical? Yes. True? Probably. Tank cleaning, by necessity, requires operators to work on top of tank containers to manipulate machinery and inspect the condition or content of the tank barrels. That means they are repeatedly accessing tank tops at 3.6 to 4.2 metres high. They need to be able to move freely, with ease and with adequate safety precautions. But what is “adequate”? Safe is a relative term. Safest would be not leaving ground level at all. But that is not possible. Or is it? There are two aspects to this. One is the safe access the other is the cleaning lances. Let’s look at safe access first. Preventing a fall or mitigating the consequence of a fall. Which is safer? Prevention, of course. This

immediately puts harness and lifeline systems into the grey area of safety. According to the Chemicals Industry Association for tanker top safety, harnesses should only be used when all
other means of prevention have been explored and excluded on the grounds of space or viability. Space is normally not an issue for installing a customised safety system. So, what makes it unviable?

SUMMER 2017 • TANK CLEANING
HEALTH AND SAFETY Practicality? – The equipment restricts the operator. Speed? – It slows down the operation. Cost? – It is better to take the risk. Loadtec Engineered Systems provides the widest potential portfolio of fall prevention systems. These range from simple folding stairs with safety cage to give secure access to a single or tightly grouped series of manholes. These systems are widely available with size and safety options and provide adequate safety while the walkways on the tanker are conveniently positioned. If, however, the tanker walkways are not positioned to facilitate easy stepping onto or off the tanker, then safety is compromised. The next option is to have a safety cage that surrounds the tanker top and allows freedom to walk the entire length. This is ideal for tanker top operations where access to everywhere is essential. This still requires walkways to be present on the tanker top to allow safe walking. But trip hazards occur and gaps can be unacceptable due to positioning of the tanker barrel. Bear in mind, that a person can fall through a 300mm (12”) gap quite easily, especially if accidentally knocked unconscious or faints. If one wants to have the safest solution then one needs to remove trip hazards and allow the free movement of the operator without the need to carefully pick steps while on the top of the tank container. The systems shown above allow operators to access round barrel tanks and ISO containers with great ease and walk anywhere within a safety cage that has hand, knee and kick guard protection. The floor is a series of 300mm wide flip up panels and allows the operator to only open the area needed to work. The cage elevates vertically so the height of tanker is irrespective and they all park on the same centreline. The picture above shows a loading arm, but this can also be a cleaning lance which can reach any position within the safety cage area. All of these systems are available. They can all be retrofitted into existing buildings and yards and they all provide prevention of a fall. By equipping operators with harnesses and life-lines, you are making the assumption each time that the equipment is fitted correctly, the operators are trained and there are sufficiently trained teams available and vigilant to provide assistance if an operator needs to be rescued from an arrested

fall (possibly unconscious at the time). Of course, one should presume the proven risk of orthostatic suspension is known and understood by all operators and support teams. In theory, this means at least two people being instantly available for support for every person doing the work. Using well designed prevention systems removes the choices from an operator’s decision matrix and allows them the safe route as the only option. The added need of moving a hand lance around with trailing hose, or sliding a dip tube along a runway beam, also makes manual handling a factor that needs bearing in mind. What if the operator, once they have opened the man lids, can direct and
guide the cleaning lances using a joystick control from the safety of the platform or a control room? Or, even better, the lances are set to automatically find the open manholes, insert themselves and carry out a programmed operation in each one successively. Fantasy? Actually, it isn’t. The liquid handling industries, generally, need to take a step back, look long and hard at their operations and consider safety as an efficiency. Until then, change will be glacial. z

When less is more Water resources will become more stretched as the world population grows. As a consequence, more and more tank cleaning companies are doing their best to save water Our home planet carries an unusual name, considering that 72% of its surface is not covered with soil but with water. However, only a tiny fraction of this huge amount, namely 0.3%, can directly be used as drinking water for humans. The lion’s share of 97% of the natural water reservoirs consist of salty seawater. It is one of the many reasons why the chemical industry and its service providers are dedicated to keeping their environmental impact as low as possible, whilst adhering to the highest safety and quality requirements. It is important that the equipment used for the reliable transport of chemicals is kept in immaculate condition. The tank cleaning industry is also increasingly placing importance on cleaning tanks in an environmentally-friendly way. For example, Germany-based

to be serviced or even replaced. In order to reduce this to a minimum, an ion exchanger is used to substitute the calcium carbonate and magnesium with sodium. Also anions were exchanged with chlorine, which remain dissolved in the water even under heat and pressure.
its core competencies in transport, storage and handling of hazardous and harmless materials, TALKE also operates several other cleaning stations in Germany and the UAE and offers technical and consulting services. “We believe water to be the world’s best cleaning agent,” says Thorsten Vitz, head of the cleaning station. “Pretty much every substance we deal with can be purged using hot water applied under high pressure. That’s why we work almost exclusively with it and only rarely use additional detergents.”
The resultant water contains some free chlorine as well as sodium chloride – common salt. However, none of these substances are wanted in high-quality rinse water. Neither chlorine, because it has a corrosive effect, nor salt, because it creates salt rings inside the tank. For this reason, the water undergoes a second processing stage in an osmosis plant. The result is demineralised water that is similar in composition to distilled water. Rinsing is now performed at very high pressures and temperatures up to 80°C. This ensures that even fats and oils are rinsed from the tank without leaving a trace. Vitz explains: “Anything that we don’t add to the rinse water at the start of the process doesn’t have to be removed before the wastewater is fed into the drainage system.” After rinsing, the wastewater is kept homogenised in a stirring tank. None of the residues are separately extracted from the wastewater in advance so that the following process can take place all in one go: the wastewater is neutralised to pH 7 and iron (III) chloride is added
Demineralisation To a large extent, the rinse water is drawn from TALKE’s own well and undergoes a two-step process, which starts with demineralisation. The water naturally contains calcium carbonate and magnesium. Both are salts that precipitate out under heat and pressure and are deposited on the heating elements. Scaled-up heat exchangers lose their heating capacity and have

to precipitate suspended matter as well as a special polymer that acts as a flocculant. The water is then allowed to rest in a series of settling tanks in order to allow the agglomerated residues to drop out of suspension and any floating fats or oils to be skimmed off. If at this stage the fats and oils had been emulsified in the water using a detergent, the process would be much more complicated. This way, we can discharge them from the settling tank together with the precipitated suspended matter as sludge. The sludge is dewatered in a filter press, dried and passed to a waste disposal company. Thanks to the extra effort put into producing the best possible rinse water beforehand, it’s much easier to treat
after cleaning than with other methods – making it, in TALKE’s opinion, the most efficient and environmentallyfriendly cleaning process there is. Environmentally-friendly manner “Wastewater containing materials that cannot be precipitated with iron (III) chloride and wastewater containing heavy metals are not fed into the treatment process. In such cases, it’s taken straight from the tank and separately transferred to a specialist disposal company,” adds Vitz. “In order to ensure that cleaning and disposal of the wastewater are performed in a proper and environmentally-friendly manner, it’s crucial that we know and understand
the chemical composition of the product hiding behind the brand name.” However, safety data sheets or other comprehensive product data are usually not available during the carriage. Even when handling dangerous goods with their extended transport documents, the risk-posing substances cannot necessarily be derived from them. Here, open communication between the customers and the cleaning station is needed to select the most suitable cleaning method. z
