All our facilities are equipped with fax and showers for drivers. LAVADEROS EUROPA is continuing its expansion project with the opening of a new tank cleaning station in the Bay of Algeciras. An innovative cleaning station, it’s located at a strategic point for the southern Spanish sector. The depot can clean tanktrucks, silos, IBCs and tank containers. Both chemicals and foodstuffs can be handled. There are three cleaning lanes and another three with hot air drying, as well as one lane with high pressure cleaning especially for containers, provisions for nitrogen, gas scrubbing, compressed air testing, water and steam cleaning. There is a provision for heating tanktrucks and containers with steam or temperature controlled hot water or electricity. Drivers can use the dedicated room with TV, fax, internet as well as the shower room. Without the logistics industry, the industrialised world would could come to a stop. From fuel to chemicals to food, tanks are vital for transporting commodities and keeping the planet moving. A vital, but often overlooked part of the global logistics network is of course tank cleaning. Removing impurities, dangerous substances and toxins is crucial in all industries. But when it comes to the transport of food and drink, it takes on an importance everyone can appreciate. Infections, poisoning and disease outbreaks from the food and beverage industry can have a devastating effect. In this issue of Tank Cleaning Magazine, we take an in depth look at the procedures in place to ensure the food logistic industry washes tanks to a high standard. On pages 10 and 11, EFTCO take us through the design and development of the ECD document, and how it’s continuing to evolve. Continuing the standards theme, on page 14 SQAS give a detailed explanation of how safety and quality assessments are moving forward, and what this means for the industry. EFTCO changes name of ECD The European Federation of Tank Cleaning Organisations (EFTCO) has changed the name, although not the initials, of the European Cleaning Document (ECD) to the EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD). According to the association of tank cleaners, the implementation of the EFTCO Cleaning Document has been carried out in a bid to accomplish a higher identification of the ECD to EFTCO. The change in name took place with immediate effect on 4 December 2017. EFTCO has asked all of its national member organisations to change ECD templates into the EFTCO Cleaning Document. The headline and micro

letters have changed to EFTCO Cleaning Document, while the second page has not been changed and can continue to be used to local language requirements. A statement on EFTCO’s website reads: “The EFTCO Cleaning Document will give EFTCO a unique status within the logistic chains of all industry categories for the chemical, feed, pharma and food sections. 2018 will be a year of transition, fading away from the European Cleaning Document and the implementation of the EFTCO Cleaning Document. On 7 December, EFTCO announced it had commenced work on an electronic version of the ECD, in collaboration with its partners ECTA and ESSENSCIA. z

Two brothers killed cleaning molasses tank In Australia, two men died after being overcome by fumes while cleaning inside a tank in Queensland, according to ABC News. Police reported that the brothers, Frank Vella and George Vella, were found dead in the tank used to hold molasses at 8:30pm on 13 January. ABC News reports that Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is investigating the incident, which happened at Vella Haulage in Sarina. A report is set to be prepared for the coroner. According to ABC News, WHSQ believes 20 cubic metres of superflow – a sugar cane by-product, with 4% urea mix was the last known load the tanker had transported. It is apparently presumed that the two men were cleaning the residue in the tanks after unloading the day before. z

Veolia North America sells industrial cleaning services division

American PetroLog invests in fleet of ISO tank containers

Clean Harbors is set to acquire Veolia North America’s US Industrial Cleaning Services Division for $120 million in an all-cash transaction, according to a recent announcement. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018, subject to approval by US regulators and other customary closing conditions. Veolia North America’s US Industrial Cleaning Services Division includes industrial vacuuming, hydro-blasting, tank cleaning & separations and many other cleaning and maintenance services. William “Bill” DiCroce, president and CEO of Veolia North America, said, “Clean Harbors is an ideal acquirer for our US Industrial Cleaning Services Division. In divesting this business, we sought a partner that would provide a seamless transition and great continuity for our customers and our employees in that business.” “All of our businesses across North America – water, energy, waste and regeneration – are poised for growth,” added DiCroce. “The proceeds of this sale will help fuel and accelerate that growth.” According to a statement, the sale does not affect industrial cleaning operations in Canada or any other region of the world. z

American PetroLog has expanded into domestic ISO tanks, according to Bulk Transporter. The company has invested in a fleet of domestic ISO tank containers that can provide transportation and storage solutions to agricultural and chemical manufacturers and distributors. “With the continued growth in the North American chemical industry and the diminishing availability of tanker trucks, our ISO tanks provide a much needed capacity solution to our customers having predictable and consistent shipping lanes,” Robert Kellner, American PetroLog’s chief relationship officer, told Bulk Transporter. “Our ISO service gives chemical and ag manufacturers and distributors what they expect and deserve from their logistics partner – reliability, predictability, innovation, cost effectiveness, and safety,” Kellner continued. z

Hoyer enters agreement with BP

Hoyer and BP have announced a new aviation fuel transport and logistics agreement in the UK. The agreement will see Hoyer take responsibility for stock progression, scheduling, despatch and physical delivery of all aviation fuel in the UK. “This agreement with BP provides another important step for Hoyer in the UK to achieve its strategic growth objectives in the aviation fuels market,” said Allan Davison, operations director at Hoyer Petrolog. “The contract award also builds on the already existing relationship between the Hoyer Group and BP’s fuel business who are one of our most important corporate customers.” z

Quala rebrands Express Services division

North American industrial container cleaning company Quala has rebranded its recently acquired Alpha Technical Services (ATS) “Express Services” division, which will now operate under the Quala brand. The facility located in Pasadena, Texas, US, will immediately incorporate the procedures, technology and customer service programmes available at other terminals in the Quala network. “We’re extremely pleased about this transition,” said Steve Martin, VP of Sales and Marketing at ATS. “The Quala team’s experience, advanced cleaning methods and industry knowledge will allow us to improve the quality of services available to customers in the Pasadena area.” Four of five wash bays at the Pasadena facility will continue to specialise in general chemical washes; the fifth bay will be dedicated to cleaning tanks carrying dry bulk food grade products. “Quala is very excited to add an additional Houston area site to our growing North American footprint,” said Eric Speiser, EVP of Sales and Marketing at Quala. “ATS’s Express Services have earned a tremendous reputation in this market. Tank cleaning facility to open in SOHAR Freezone

Joint Tank Services (JTS) is set to establish a new deport in the SOHAR Freezone, on a joint 20,000 square meter green-field site, media reports. Dedicated to cleaning, storage, repairs and support services for ISO tanks, the new facility is being built in response to increasing traffic to the port in the Sultanate of Oman. According to a statement from UAE based JTS, the new facility in the SOHAR Freezone aims to both consolidate the company’s existing services for the tank container industry and develop its business offerings directly for the chemical industry. Construction of the new facility is expected to start in the second quarter of 2018, according to JTS, subject to approval from the relevant environment authorities in Oman. SOHAR Freezone CEO, Jamal Aziz, speaking after the signing of the land lease agreement, said: “Throughput at our Hutchison-managed container terminal has increased threefold in the past five years. As our new Liwa Plastics Project comes on-stream at SOHAR, we are going to see phenomenal growth in the petrochemical and downstream plastics industry here, with pursuant growth in the number and complexity of ISO containers being handled through the port. Having specialists like JTS on hand will help to create the kind of world-class cluster we are hoping for, putting Oman on the map as a major plastics producer.” z

Wascosa acquires Kurt Nitzer’s wagon fleet Swiss company Wascosa has taken over the wagon fleet of Kurt Nitzer, a Hamburg-based wagon leasing company. The fleet includes around 200 chemical and pressurised gas tank cars, according to a statement from Wascosa. Leasing contracts with existing Kurt Nitzer customers will be continued after the take over comes into effect. Headquarterd in Lucerne, Switzerland, Wascosa is a familyrun business established in 1964. Its core business is the leasing and administration of freight wagons for rail transportation. The company’s fleet ranges from tank wagons for the chemical and mineral oil industry through to wagons for combined transport and the conveyance of bulk goods. z

500,000 tonnes of chemicals and 250,000 tonnes of food, feed and non-food products are transported on Europe’s roads, railways and waterways every day. The variety of transport containers is extremely high but all of them have something in common: They have to be clean. They have to meet the set standards of hygiene. Moreover, there should be no way for anyone in this process chain not to meet these high standards. All transport containers need to be cleaned on a regular basis and with high accuracy. Additionally, they have to be disinfected after cleaning when used for sensitive food or feed. Monitoring during cleaning Due to an increasing number of costly product recalls, caused by contamination of the finished product with listeria, mildew, salmonella, or impurities, such as particles of plastic, glass, wood or metal, the industry is increasingly concerned about the compliance with food safety standards during transport. While for decades it has been common practice in the industry to monitor and document all manufacturing steps of a product, including the cleaning and disinfection of production facilities, this often was not set into operation in the cleaning of food transport containers for cost reasons. Large parts of the industry were generally not prepared to pay a reasonable price for transport, including a high-quality and safe hygienic cleaning and disinfection. Due to numerous and current negative experiences, however, the tide has turned. Transport, cleaning and disinfection are increasingly regarded as an important link for food safety in the supply chain. For the logistics company this means adapting to the new requirements and seeking out only cleaning stations that

Food Safety – a vital matter for EFTCO’s members

According to EFTCO, maximising safety is all about communication As part of the Food logistic chain, the European Federation of Tank Cleaning Organisations (EFTCO) and their associated cleaning stations realised as far back as 2013 their responsibility for food safety and food defence. Tank cleanings involved in food and food related transports have to fulfil the high quality standards of the industry. With 19 national associations covering 24 European countries, EFTCO is perfectly placed to connect a network of 570 cleaning stations and ensure that this service is carried out by professional and reliable partners. Five years ago, in 2013, EFTCO implemented its Food Assessment and members involved in food cleaning voluntarily added around 120 questions related to clean food tanks to their quality audit assessments. The aim of the EFTCO Food Assessment was to, as much as possible, integrate European legislation into the EFTCO Food questionnaire. During the compilation of the questionnaire the fact had to be taken into consideration that there were no special legal requirements for foodstuff cleaning. The aim was to achieve a practical solution in which the interests of all parties i.e. the loading industry, transport companies and tank cleaning stations, were taken into consideration. A complete EFTCO Food Assessment consists of 3 parts: 1. SQAS core with general management, quality and safety questions 2. SQAS tank cleaning with general tank cleaning questions 3. EFTCO Food Assessment questionnaire with food specific questions As the requirements of food cleaning have local and industrial differences, the assessments’ results are published to the industry. The quality evaluation can be done individually under observation of the specific industry requirements. 140 cleaning stations participated in the EFTCO Food Assessment up until the end of 2017, when the assessments’ results were released.

The ECD – “EFTCO CLEANING DOCUMENT” – European `best practice` for tank cleaning documentation The uniform EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD), formerly the European Cleaning Document, has been developed by EFTCO in cooperation with ECTA and CEFIC in order to satisfy the needs of cleaning stations, transport companies and manufacturing companies. The ECD is accepted European wide and uses cross-linguistic EFTCO Codes, which provide a documentation of progressed tank cleaning and equipment accessories. Those EFTCO Codes can easily be assimilated to the needs of new documentation and additional codes can be added. Thirteen codes are related specifically to foodstuffs and to be used in addition to the 103 existing general EFTCO codes.

EFTCO announces cleaning stations that have been assessed on its interactive European web site map of European Tank Cleaning Stations (www.eftco.org/depots). Detailed assessment results can be made available by the cleaning stations, the owners of those reports. Those assessed cleaning stations are allowed by EFTCO to use the “EFTCO Food Assessed Logo”.

Independent and approved assessors guarantee high-quality information, as only verified and qualified assessors are nominated to execute those assessments. It is now planned for an updated 2018 version of the EFTCO Food Assessment Questionnaire to be released. This would

implement the feedback received from the industry to improve assessment data and adapt to industry demands. The EFTCO Food Assessment Questionnaire is actually available in six languages, from the download section of EFTCO’s website. Documenting cleaning All cleaning stations which are members of EFTCO related national associations use the standardised ECD for the documentation of cleaning. The ECD is a document commonly accepted as proof that the tank cleaning was carried out as the customer requested, at a high-quality level and in respect of all legal, safety and environmental requirements. The ECD contains important information for all partners in the supply chain and is understandable in different countries. This was achieved by introducing the EFTCO cleaning codes, translated into

STANDARDS 21 languages. EFTCO is the owner of the EFTCO Cleaning Document (ECD) which stands for the quality and legality of the tank cleaning. The minimum requirement for access to the ECD is supervised by EFTCO`s national associations. The use of a uniform European document has important advantages for all EFTCO cleaning document parties involved: • The document has the same form which can easily be distinguished from the falsifications. • The use of a unique numbering system provides security and authentication traceable against fraudulent misuse of the cleaning documents. • The fact that the same information is always in the same place on the cleaning document will facilitate its use by operators at loading points, by drivers etc. • The use of the EFTCO Tank Cleaning Codes will make it easy for everybody to identify and understand which cleaning operations have been carried out to clean the tank. • The EFTCO Tank Cleaning Codes are currently available in 21 European languages. This provides a clear understanding of the cleaning document information for all users throughout Europe. Future plans will make the ECD available in an electronic document. EFTCO is currently engaging with their partners from industry and ECTA to start the 2018 pilot for an electronic ECD (EECD). After the pilot phase and during the European implementation, the food industry will be invited to participate in digitalisation. The target is to reduce industry complexity, allow better interoperability between industry and service partners, improve safety and process compliance and allow costs to be decreased. EFTCO, with their nineteen national associations covering 24 European countries, is convinced that food safety and food defence needs a European approach. It is EFTCO`s vision to improve food cleanings and the preparation of transport tanks for food. The feedback communication with the entire food industry is a continuous challenge for EFTCO, their national members and all associated cleaning stations. It is all about communication. z

SQAS: Looking back on 2017, and forward to 2018

As SQAS celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017, the scheme broke a number of records The Safety and Quality Assessment System (SQAS) for logistics service providers was created 25 years ago by Cefic against the background of a number of serious transport accidents and the need to improve safety standards in the logistics chain, in the spirit of Responsible Care. In 1992 the first trial SQAS audits of road transport companies were carried out and since then the scheme has been growing continuously. It was gradually extended to five modules covering the complete chain of land logistics: Transport Service Providers, Tank Cleaning Stations, Warehouses, Rail Operators and Chemical Distributors. Over time the scope of the scheme was expanded from Health, Safety and Environment to cover also Security and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aspects. This is reflected in the new name of the scheme that was launched on the 1 June 2017: Safety and Quality Assessment for Sustainability, together with a completely revamped SQAS website and logo. Close co-operation with the logistics sector has always been crucial for the success of the scheme. From the start the logistics companies and their European sectorial associations (ECTA and EFTCO), and the chemical distributors (through FECC) were closely involved in the development of the scheme. The Responsible Care partnership agreements of Cefic with ECTA and FECC gave a

further boost to SQAS, which was used by ECTA and FECC as the tool for the RC Verification of their members. While the basic principles of SQAS third party single assessments focusing on continuous improvement for use by chemical companies in their risk management - remained the same over the past 25 years, the scheme was continuously adapted to changing industry requirements, at the same time making the system much more user friendly. Whereas it took in the early phase more than five years to reach the cap of 100 audits per year, over the past 15 years the number of assessments has been growing exponentially, resulting in almost 1000 assessments of logistics companies and distributors in 2017. With the main objective of SQAS being allowing the users to access the assessment reports, there was a record of more than 6000 consultations in 2017. In line with the general trend, the number of SQAS assessments in tank cleaning stations has also been growing.

The average score of all the SQAS assessments carried out in tank cleaning stations in 2017 was 81%, although some areas, such as security, corporate social responsibility, subcontractors and behaviour base safety are still under the 70% level. Any assessment system is only as reliable as the reliability of its assessors. That is why Cefic maintains a solid quality assurance system on the assessment process, including the network of 67 SQAS assessors active across Europe. The success of the system did not remain un-noticed in other parts of the world and it is now widely recognised as a world class system. With the support and assistance of Cefic, SQAS-like local schemes have been developed in the Gulf, China, Taiwan, South-Africa and Brazil. The organisers of SQAS are permanently challenging themselves to improve the system. On December 2017, a strategic review meeting to brainstorm new ideas was held at Cefic with SQAS stakeholders. This year a new revision of SQAS will take place and will end up in the launching of a new version of SQAS questionnaires and other significant changes in January 2019.

With its 30 years of experience and knowhow, CTW supports all its customers with the renovation and construction of new cleaning facilities, from start to finish. 2017 was a successful year for CTW. Besides the opening of the company’s new, more modern and spacious business site in Turnhout, Belgium, the company realised a wide range of new tank cleaning and carwash projects at home and abroad.

Later in 2018, CTW will install a new tank cleaning facility for Colorit, a company in Lipetsk, Russia. The new facility will contain one washing lane for chemicals and one for food.

In 2018, CTW will start the installation of five new tank cleaning facilities for: H&S Cleaning in Vlissingen, the Netherlands; Katoennatie 1998 in Antwerp, Belgium; Spoelhal in Geel, Belgium; Cotac in Antwerp, Belgium; and Colorit in Lipetsk, Russia. Food cleaning for H&S (Vlissingen) CTW is going to build a new tank cleaning installation for H&S Cleaning. Located in the Netherlands, the company has been active for more than 65 years in the transportation of liquid foodstuffs. Recently, they contacted CTW to build a brand new tank cleaning facility. This facility is set to include a food cleaning station with three washing lanes. The technical installation will be built in a 45ft (14m) container that will be placed next to the washing lanes. A pre-built technical installation in a container requires less space, as well as being easy to transport.

CTW has developed and installed a brand-new latex cleaning unit for Cotac (Hoyer Group). For the new chemical cleaning facility (two washing lanes), CTW will provide two Hammelmann pump groups (210 bar - 115l/min). Chemical/food cleaning for Colorit (Lipetsk)

“Easy Connect” Pack The “Easy Connect” pack is a module that links the software of a tank cleaning installation with those of other external suppliers. (For example: Lynx Automation, Lucrasoft and etc.) This pack involves the input of customer data, washing programs, controlling and the final invoicing. It is possible to connect a central management system to the CTW cleaning installation, giving the advantage of greater flexibility. Bulk & Food cleaning for Katoennatie (Liefkenshoektunnel, Antwerp) In the past, CTW had already realised a bulk cleaning with four washing lanes for Katoennatie. Now, the Belgian manufacturer will install a new cleaning installation for bulk and food cleaning, with two washing lanes for each. The CTW engineering team developed a new high-pressure tank cleaning unit for Katoennatie, which consists of Uraca HP pumps. All the components will be built on a skid, and each lane will be equipped with five Bolondi washing heads. This tank cleaning installation will be custom-built to the needs of the customer and designed according to all relevant safety standards. Bulk tank cleaning for Spoelhal (Geel) Spoelhal has long active in the cleaning of bulk and silo trucks and bulk containers, but recently set out to expand its cleaning activities. The new bulk cleaning facility will boast three washing lanes, featuring two CTW TC units (100 bar - 306l/min), one stationary unit (110 bar - 70l/ min), Bolondi washing heads, low and high pressure dosing pumps built on a stainless steel frame, two loading platforms of 6m, and a high pressure drying installation of 18.5kW

The pathway to a new tank cleaning facility Stolt Tank Containers has expanded its footprint in Europe and Asia, here we look at the process of opening a new facility

About four years ago, Stolt Tank Containers began to see the need for greater resources to handle its growing business in southern Europe. “At about the same time, Alberto Marenzana – founder of one of the leading providers of multimodal transportation services in all of Europe – approached us,” recalled Michael W. Kramer, president of Stolt Tank Containers. “Alberto’s trucking firm was facing similar problems in the region, so we began to talk.” The rest, as they say, is history. Stolt Tank Containers and Marenzana celebrated the opening of their new joint venture tank cleaning and maintenance depot in the Port of Vado Ligure in northwest Italy, about 25 miles west of Genoa, in autumn 2017. “We believe we have transformed a problem into an opportunity for us, for STC and, more importantly, for our customers,” said Marenzana, Chairman of Marenzana. “This new depot gives us the opportunity to add significant value to the services provided to our local petrochemical customers. With StoltNielsen, we have immediately found an excellent understanding at all levels, from the management to finance, operational and technical department and look

forward to a successful relationship.” Kramer added: “Along with Marenzana, we can now give customers in the region the peace of mind that comes from knowing their tanks are inspected, maintained and cleaned to the consistent and strict global standards to which STC rigorously adheres.” The new depot is also expected to benefit from increased volume in the Vado Ligure area, following the planned 2018 opening of a new deep-water container terminal in Vado, a project led by APM Terminals, in partnership with COSCO Shipping Ports and Qingdao Port International Development. The well-equipped Vado depot includes two cleaning bays and four cleaning stations for high pressure automated cleaning of both road barrels and tank containers. Integrated cleaning and vapour-extraction capabilities ensure zero vapour emissions. The depot provides state-of-the-art wastewater treatment and optimised thermal/electrical energy usage systems. Periodic tank-testing services and surveys are offered, along with tank-container heating and storage. Local authorities, including Monica Giuliano, Mayor of Vado, supported the project, both in Vado Ligure and at the province level to secure all the permits

required for complete compliance with environmental regulations. Activity at the depot ramped up quickly after the opening and continues to improve, driven by volume not only from STC and Marenzana, but from growing third-party business. The facility’s initial SQAS assessment generated strong scores, and the results of an EFTCO audit are expected by the end of January. For STC, the only tank container operator in the world with its own global depot network, expanding the footprint of STC’s depot operations is a key and ongoing strategic objective. In 2016, STC’s new depots in India – Mumbai and Kandla – completed their first full year of operations. Earlier in 2017, the company opened a new joint venture depot in Laem Chabang, Thailand. In Saudi Arabia, two new STC depots – in Jubail and Dammam – are expected to open in 2018, with a third depot planned for Jeddah. “With Vado, STC’s global network now consists of 21 such facilities,” said Kramer. “This network is unique, and gives us direct control over the handling, cleaning and maintenance of our fleet, allowing us to deliver the quality, safety and reliability – for products, people and the environment – that our customers demand.”

Cutting edge tank cleaning facilities As Tank Cleaning Magazine reported in its Autumn 2017 issue, Marenzana describes the Vado facility as the “ultimate depot”, one that has “raised the bar for tank cleaning in northern Italy”. Apparently, the design of the new facility is based on the example of the Stolt Tank Containers depot in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, which has been successfully operating for the last three years. In particular, the Vado depot has taken on the same water treatment procedure as the Moerdijk facility. Marenzana claims that this water treatment plan keeps to “strict standards for the water that is disposed of to make sure that the impact on the environment is minimalised.” An air scrubber and active carbon filters mean the facility can treat air emissions from directly inside the tank. The heating facilities, meanwhile, allow tanks to be heated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The depot has recently received ISO 9000-18000-14000 integrated certification, and was due to begin issuing ECDs from January 2018. In a video celebrating the opening of the Vado depot, Kramer said: “Behind every depot there’s a story and our story starts with Alberto (chairman and founder of Marenzana) and Laurent Grandjean (director of Europe Stolt Containers). We had a problem four years ago and came up with this solution. “Marenzana and Stolt have a focus on safety, the environment and people. This is a global effort and we have had people from Holland, Houston, Italy, China and a few other locations involved in the building of this facility.” The 20th facility In April 2017, the Fusion Stolt Tank Services (FSTS) depot was opened in Laem Chabang, Thailand. As with the Vado depot, the site for the Laem Chabang facility was chosen after much careful consideration. “The main port and chemical complex in Thailand was for many years in Bangkok,” Kramer explained in April, at the opening of the Laem Chabang facility. “But by the late 1990s, the handwriting was on the wall. Ships were getting too big for the harbour and, with the growth in both regional and longhaul trades, congestion was becoming a serious problem. And that’s what

ultimately drove the development of the port at Laem Chabang. Over the years, we began migrating shipments down to Laem Chabang, along with the steamship lines, because it’s clear that’s where the future was.” Laem Chabang’s continued growth saw port operations increase. Chemical and petrochemical complexes started to appear and multiply, in turn triggering a surge in demand for tank storage volumes. This growth inevitably presented challenges. “It was becoming increasingly clear that the local tank container depots weren’t keeping up with the market – and that was going to impact us over the longer term if we didn’t act,” Kramer explained. “It wasn’t just a question of volumes. We were moving more and more high purity and food-grade products that required very high levels of cleanliness. “In the interests of our customers, we needed increased control over the tank cleaning process and treatment of wastewater – having our own depot in Laem Chabang would enable us to do that.” STC collaborated with Fusion Logistics on the project. Construction on the depot was completed by contractor SmartTech. Its key features include ten bays for chemical tank cleaning, as well as a completely segregated food-grade area, consisting of two tank cleaning bays housed in a separate garage and designed to European food-grade standards. Other features include innovative systems for wastewater treatment and water-use management, and a fuel-efficient LPG-powered boiler that reduces the depot’s carbon footprint.

Global presence STC’s fleet of 35,000 tank containers means it’s by far the world’s largest. According to the company, it includes the largest chemical and food-grade fleets, as well as specialised tank containers for aggressive or high-purity products, compressed gases and cryogenic cargoes. Through its global network of owned and joint venture depots, such as its newest facilities in Vado and Laem Chabang, STC has unique control over the cleaning, handling and maintenance of its fleet. According to the company, this means that STC’s customers “know that their cargoes and the tanks carrying them are continually under the watchful eye of STC and its globally applied operating standards.” A typical Stolt Tank Container conforms to UN T11 specifications for the carriage of hazardous products in bulk. Capacity ranges from 17,500 and 26,000 litres, depending on the cargo, with a working pressure rating of 3-4 bar. The external appearance of STC’s tanks does not vary significantly, and fittings are generally standardised. A variety of features and additional capacities are available to meet special product requirements. The 20-foot ISO frame is constructed to absorb the stresses of a full tank container and to facilitate its handling and stowage by gantry cranes and straddle carriers. z
