Welcome to the 260th edition of The Horse Trading magazine where we strive to unite our readers with a passion for horses.
HORSE TRADING Advertising / Chantel Heydenrych ads@horsetrading.co.za
On a scorching hot Monday I took a drive out to SARDA to get a better understanding of how the centre works for an article which you can read on page XYZ. After spending the morning watching and chatting to everyone at the centre, I realised how important volunteering is to any non-profit organisation. Each and every volunteer, despite the heat, was passionate about giving their time to help maintain the centre and most importantly help the riders that come every week for therapy. They really are the backbone of an organisation and without their dedication these centres wouldn’t be able to operate. They are in the background happily devoting their time and skills without much praise.
graphic design / O’Brien Design mike@obriendesign.co.za www.obriendesign.co.za
I started questioning myself as to how I could volunteer myself, and I have made a conscious effort to contribute in a way that is meaningful to an organisation of my choice. This is my way of giving back to the community and helping out where I can. It is so desperately needed and we should all contribute in any way we can. I have such huge respect for volunteers and I hope I have the strength to see it through. To all volunteers who are devoted to helping others…. Thank you! Enjoy this edition. Deborah Gray

Horse Whispering Natural Horsemanship
We explore Natural Horsemanship a technique that has been around since ancient Greek times. Natural Horsemanship (NH) is a way of reading and understanding horse’s instinctive and herd behaviours, using body language to communicate effectively with your horse in a way he understands in order to build a willing and cooperative partnership that is equal between horse and human. Natural Horsemanship is not just the tools and the techniques, but is a philosophy and an attitude. Horses are very communicative animals using many body signals to communicate how they are feeling. There sign language include: head elevation, ear position, nostril and mouth gestures, nose movements, front feet, hind feet, tail position. As part of NH the core tool is to be able to identify and read the horse language so that you can understand his emotions, motivations and behaviours, thus enhancing training. Another important concept in NH is to understand the herd dynamic and what motivates horses. Horses are herd animals and depend upon the safety of the herd for their survival. The structure of the horse herd is known as a “linear hierarchy,” which means that each and every individual of the herd is either dominant over or subordinate to, each and every other individual. It is believed that through the use of NH techniques, the horse is drawn to us for his comfort and safety and he will accept us as the leader of his herd. The core concept of this training is the trainer uses body language to emulate an equine herd leader which horses respond to with signals of their own. The procedure ends with the trainer adopting passive body language in order to create a partnership with the horse. The moment this happens the horse willingly chooses to be with the trainer and accepts leadership and protection. Proper natural horsemanship round penning (only one of the techniques used) is direct one-to-one very precise communication with very specific cues and instructions. The owner is there to show horses the open avenue for voluntarily joining with the human. It involves precise body language and knowing when to release the pressure there for certain responses in behaviour. Many NH practitioners believe that all horses learn from the release of pressure, not from the pressure itself. It is about being calm and assertive, but not aggressive. It is about being patient, kind, even be empathetic to fears, but be strongly directive. Aspects of a round pen training method have been called into question by researchers, most vocal being the University of Sydney.
www.horsetrading.co.za
They believe that round pen horse training is unpleasant for the horses as it uses fear to gain control of horses. The technique relies on the trainer using movement and noise to drive the horse around the perimeter of the pen. The trainer gradually reduces their aggressive movements, after which the horse will eventually slow down and approach them. The researchers used remote control cars to mimic the technique and to eliminate the assumed essential role of the humans speaking the language of the horse. They ‘rewarded’ the horses for stopping and turning towards the car with a period of ‘safety’, when the car didn’t chase them as long as they kept facing it. They trained some horses to actually walk up to and touch the car, according to the research findings. The researchers believe that the training outcomes were achieved as a result of ‘pressure-release’ and not the ability of the trainer, or a remote control car, to mimic horse behaviour. The results indicate that because these methods rely on fear and safety, the horse is forced to choose between being repeatedly frightened or remaining with the trainer, and therefore they have questioned whether it is humane to rely on fear and its termination to train horses. Whatever criticisms have been levied against different forms of NH and their practitioners, if the main emphasis is on building respect and kindness between owner and horse – it is a message that should be heard.
Signs of relaxation & subordinance • Lowering of the head (any lowering is important but the ultimate sign is the drop all the way to the ground) • A deep sigh or exhale and relaxed east-west ears • Keeps one ear glued to you, the ear closest to you or the inside ear • Licking and chewing. Horses will only chew when they are relaxed, so it is always a good sign when they move their jaw. Licking is an indication that the horse understands and accepted your authority.

Building an Unbreakable Bond
Like any relationship whether it be human or with horse, it takes time and work. Nourishment comes in relationships in many ways. Here are 5 tips to building that initial bond with a new horse.
1. Get to know your horse
4. Don’t spoil with treats It’s easy to slip into the habit of always treating our horse with a tidbit...which they love. But don’t overdo it. Treats are fine in moderation and you decide when and where you give the treats – not the other way round.
Like any new relationship you have to spend time getting to know your partner and building trust so that you can both feel secure. Spend quality time with your horse, not riding him or grooming him, but just being in his presence. Sit quietly with him in his paddock. Let him investigate you through smell and nuzzling you. Just be in his space.
5. Human touch
2. Go for a walk
Start by stroking his ears, starting at the base and working your way up to the tips. Press the tips of his ears to alleviate stress.
When you go out to get your horse meet him with an open hand and allow him to smell you and come to you. Enjoy each other company without having to work him. Go for a walk with you leading him by his side. This will let him know who is boss in a passive way. This is a great time to also just talk to your horse.
3. Put in the work Once you have established each other and built that unwavering trust, put in the time grooming and feeding your horse. Start with his feet moving up to his face. You have to be part of his everyday life.
8
Who doesn’t like to be massaged? Some horses can take time warming up to the idea of touch but once they do they love it. Find the touch they like. By doing so you are giving him comfort, relief, relaxation, full trust in my presence with him, and an understanding of my good intentions.
Their eyes are also particularly sensitive. Massage with your fingers (don’t dig) underneath the eye towards their hairline. If your horse is willing to drop his head for you, you are well on your way to gaining his trust. If you do your homework first, show respect to the horse, kindness, thoughtfulness and leadership, you will be rewarded with one of the greatest relationships that exist in Nature.

Stretching Minds
On the outskirts of Roodepoort, a group of dedicated volunteers and trained instructors are helping children with mental and physical disabilities reach their utmost potential using horse therapy. I visited the South African Riding for Disabled Association (SARDA) to see first-hand how this particular therapy is beneficial to children with disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, paraplegia and autism. A group of children wait eagerly for their lesson, each with their own disability. The excitement starts to build as they strap on their helmets and with the help of the instructors they are led to their horse. Some of the children look a little apprehensive, but once they are carefully helped onto the horse the magic begins.

Bodies
Central to the Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational or speech and language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement. is the three-dimensional movement of the horse, which strengthens the rider’s core muscles - vital in improving mobility, posture, coordination and balance. Children with cerebral palsy in particular have very tight leg muscles and poor core muscle tone and as a result have very little mobility. The horse requires the person on its back, in whatever position, to activate muscles by moving with the horse and exercising their unused muscles and relaxing the rigid ones. The width of the horse as well as its own body warmth allows the legs muscles to stretch and loosen. In addition, each child is required to complete a number of movements under the watchful eye of two volunteers and an instructor, which helps improve mobility and balance. www.horsetrading.co.za
The first encounter will include a touch and feel session to allow the children to become more familiar with the horse. Children can be quite scared at first, the touch and feel session gets them more at ease with the horse. Each child is matched to a horse depending on the severity or therapeutic needs. For example if a child has very spastic muscles he will receive a narrower smaller horse. If you need to improve a child’s core and balance a slightly wider, barrel like horse will be used. The physical and psychological benefits of riding have been recognised for many years for those with all kinds of disabilities. A growing number of occupational therapists believe the emotional bonding and mental discipline involved can help children with autism and emotional and behavioural problems. Improvement through therapy has shown to improve confidence, improved concentration and improves gross and fine motor skills. Therapy can also vastly improve sensory or tactile problems. The horse and his attached environment provide vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory input that is directed by therapist to address the sensory needs of the child while training. It’s the end of their half hour session. A little blind boy with cerebral palsy gives his horse a big hug before he dismounts. His smile is contagious and one can’t help feel proud for him – even if we’ve never met. Another little girl is far more agile on her crutches as she haappily plays in the jungle gym area before heading back to school. The physical benefits may not be seen instantly but the children certainly look more confident and proud with their achievements for the day. For more information contact SARDA sarda@earthcentre.org.za / 011-958-5044.
How can you help? Vital to the organisation is the dedication of the volunteers and instructors. The majority of the riders come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Each rider requires a minimum of two helpers – one to lead the pony and at least one or two to sidewalk depending on the disability. The branch exists as a result of teamwork with all instructors and helpers volunteering their time and knowledge each week. However, they require more volunteers and instructors to ensure each child receives the best out of their session. If you are unable to volunteer your time, SARDA is a non-profit organisation that relies heavily on public financial support. They have a number of fundraising activities during the year in order to raise the funds needed to maintain and run the centre.
