Pesky Summer Skin Problems

The secret to a healthy horse’s skin starts and ends with a good grooming routine. There is no doubt that summer affects their skin in many ways and with the harsh heat, summer storms and humidity bring on a swarm of summer critters that play havoc with your horse’s skin. When the skin has a problem, it can make the horse miserable. Like humans your skin is the largest organ, a protective barrier that must be kept in pristine condition. Keeping skin free of bites, cuts, bold patches, rub marks is one way of preventing dangerous bacteria and viruses from invading the horse’s systems. Hot humid condition is a hotbed for fungal or bacterial infections such as itch and rain scald. Even sun burn is a concern for some breeds! Prevention is always better than cure which when dealing with the skin it can take a while to fully heal. A routine inspection and good grooming routine will ensure their skin wards off any unwanted guests. Pesky Flies In summer flies and gnats are especially troublesome and cause irritation or hives. A horse’s skin reacts to proteins in the fly’s saliva resulting in an allergic reaction to the skin in the form of bumps or welts that are very itchy. This can be a problem as your horse rubs and scratches to relieve the itching, potentially creating a dermatitis.

8

Rain Rot Rain rot is a particularly nasty type of bacterial infection that occurs in humid regions. The bacteria live in the outer layer of skin and cause crusty scabs. When removed, the base of the hairs can be seen sticking through the bottom of the scab. It’s often treated as a fungus, which is one reason it can take hold so thoroughly. Rain rot that is caught early on can be treated by scrubbing the scabs away with shampoo and a curry comb. If the bacteria get into deeper layers of the skin, veterinary care and antibiotics might be needed to kick the infection. Dandruff Flaking dandruff, dry skin, and hair loss which coincides with hot weather might be due to a lack of fatty acids in the diet or a more sinister sign of anhidrosis. Grooming Healthy skin has a natural protective barrier which can easily be damaged by using shampoos and lotions that are not ph-neutral. This unbalance can strip the skin of its natural oils which is its own protective barrier for bacteria, fungi and viruses. An overuse of products can also dry out the skin casing cracks which is the perfect nesting area for bacteria. Summer skin problems can be easily be prevented and your horse will come out of summer with a lovely summer glow to its coat. Using insect repellents and keeping your horse cool and clean should do the trick and keep intruders at bay. www.horsetrading.co.za

Lead the horse to water Getting your horse to hydrate adequately can be hard and some need more encouragement than others. Over the past few weeks we have had a number of heat waves with temperatures in some parts of the country soring past 40º. And considering the average horse contains about 70% of water in their blood, gut, body cells and lymphatic system, it’s obvious just how important it is for your horse has a consistent source of fresh, clean water to drink at all times. So how much is enough? There is no straight forward answer. Daily water intake can be anywhere between 30 to 50l per horse depending on its size, the individual metabolism, the outside temperature and the amount of sweat produced during exercise. Water consumption can increase up to 70l when it’s hot and/or humid, even if he isn’t working. There are two main reasons why horses need so much water. Horses have a digestive system that requires lots of clean fresh water in order to function properly. Their naturally high fibre diet (grass, hay) requires high levels of water to help keep the fibre moving through the digestive system. If horses have restricted access to water or have only poor quality water and do not drink enough they are at risk of impaction colic. A reduction of 10% or more in water consumption can have a severe impact on bodily functions. If your horse suddenly starts to drink less than usual you should be alarmed and check whether it has enough salt in its diet or if there is a more sinister reason why it is not consuming enough. A good way to determine if your horse is drinking enough water is to regularly check the appearance and consistency of his manure. If it’s hard and dry you need to up its water intake. You should also check your horse’s diet. The average horse on a predominately hay diet will drink more water than a horse munching away on summer pastures that contain up to 90% moisture. To increase water consumption make sure your horse has free access to salt, especially in the hot summer months. This will encourage him to drink more.

10

www.horsetrading.co.za

Some studies have shown that by offering salt water after exercise will increase their intake of fresh water. Another way to encourage your horse to drink water is to add some sugar free apple juice to their water. This also helps restore electrolytes lost during exercise. Some horses stop drinking when they are not in their familiar environment. Horses have a very good sense of smell and taste and will refuse to drink if the water supply changes suddenly - irrespective of whether the water is clean or not. It might be helpful to get them used to the treat of apple juice in their water at home so that whilst traveling they will see it as a treat as well and also because the apple juice might overlay the different smell of the water. Water is the most important nutrient but just because your horse has access to water doesn’t mean he won’t get dehydrated. His water source must be clean, cool and fresh; otherwise, he might not drink enough, even in hot weather.

H2O for Hooves and Heels The Free State has been hardest hit by a prolonged drought with scores of cattle and horses dying from dehydration. A group of volunteers from across the country are distributing donated fodder and water to these drought stricken areas. If you wish to donate water bottles or fodder please contact Robbyn Wilkinson on 082 378 2473 for more information on how you can get involved. www.horsetrading.co.za

As horse riders do, I took a tumble seven weeks ago. Flying some meters at a canter had me whimpering, just slightly. “Ouch, ouch. I think this time something broke,” I told the experienced rider who dismounted from her horse with ease. She had come over to see if my limbs were still attached and to help soothe the confusion of my dancing Gelding. Don’t get me wrong. There were a few tears, more superficial than gut wrenching. Tears that are shaken off in five minutes because of course, cowgirls don’t cry.

Cowgirls do cry! By Gail Pearman

The real tears were to come. A ridiculous two weeks later to be precise. As a second x-ray report by a faceless physician spouted medical jargon at me that needed a Google Images explanation. Panic choked my reason and flared up pain that I had lived with for 14 days. Like a big girl rider, I had gotten right back on the horse having been told I just had a bad elbow sprain by a Trauma doctor. What a medical oversight. “Fracture of the greater left tuberosity,” I recounted the report finding to my new sports doctor. Sucking in his breath he exhaled, “Oooh. I told you so.” He attempted his best lighthearted bedside manner and ushered me into his busy office. Hysteria teetered and tears welled up as I silently predicted the reality that a broken shoulder brought. “No riding for ten weeks.” The guillotine edge fell. There was no softening that blow for the slip of a girl across from the doc’s long day desk. Ten weeks?! I had expected a break because of the break but ten weeks?! I could tell by the softening in his eyes that he understood just how much this cowgirl would cry when it was just her and the imminent walls that would close in on her. There’s nothing like a fracture to steal momentum and mindset. There’s also nothing of a fraction in the healing called on by the body as bones need to regrow, to knit back together and strengthen. What was most difficult to wrap my mind around was the dead stop pace I would have to come to. “No movement of that shoulder!” I was warned as the doc raised an eyebrow that would stop me in my impatience in the coming weeks. Downright deflated that day and for too many following it, I did not know which way to point my tumbling thoughts. Calendar calculations plummeted my blackened mood. That’s the beginning of next year February before I can get in the saddle again!

NOVICE IN THE SADDLE

My horse won’t love me anymore! He won’t give a toss about me! How am I supposed to bond with him? Every ugly fear that I had overcome to date clawed back at me. All of my progress made to date crumpled, simply crumbled. I would have to begin again because how would it be possible to pick up and carry on. While my life pace plummeted to pathetic, I was forced down to ground rules. Back to the basics of Horse Relations 101 and to gut feel. What was what? I had no clue. All I knew was that I missed the physical connection with my horse, while I resented him for his attempted buck that jarred my predictable world. “You need to forgive him,” came the hard truth from my instructor. That took more tears and a one-sided conversation with 15hh of sensitivity and here is a little of what I learned, as I attempted the braille of out-of-saddle relationship building. Although I felt clueless and pointless in his days I could talk to him, read books to him, offer him treats, even watch rainstorms and catch a rainbow from his stable with him. All I could do was be with him. As a result there have been moments when he has softened astonishingly towards me. There have been others in which I sensed he just wanted to be left alone. I sure don’t know what the riding outcome will be yet, as I remain grounded until x-rays prove otherwise. I’ve given up on trying to predict life after this experience. But I have learnt to accept the stakes of reality and work around them. I have learnt to build a relationship with my beloved boy from the ground up. And what I do know is that the day after I told him I forgave him for what happened and that he needed to forgive both of us, his head lifted that much quicker over the stable door in response to my voice. A quote by writer Linda Poindexter rings overwhelmingly true in this, my first chapter of sports injuries: “One small crack does not mean that you are broken, it means that you were put to the test and you didn’t fall apart.” I want to believe that more than anything because maybe, just maybe being broken has grown not only bones, but a bond. Gail is a writer who took hold of equestrian reins, fell head over boots in love and started blogging about her riding life at Yes & Neigh. Keep your cool! Managing horses during hot weather can be a challenge for horse owners. It’s essential to protect your horse from the summer heat. The onset of overheating can be sudden and very dangerous for a horse posing severe health issues. Overheating can result from hot weather, high humidity, poor barn ventilation, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive work and transportation. Normally, horses cool themselves by sweating. Sweating is highly effective when the horse is in a hot and dry environment, yet in a hot and humid environment the rate of evaporation from the skin is much lower and the heat becomes difficult for a horse to cope with. This is because the rate of evaporation depends mainly on the difference between the moisture level of the skin and that of the environment. When a horse is overheating the brain begins to swell which can cause deficits in the central system such as an unsteady walk or inability to get up again when lying down. You may think your horse is fatigued and resting but it may in fact be overheating. It’s therefore essential to check up on your horses in extreme weather conditions and if you see or suspect signs of overheating call a vet – cases of overheating are emergency cases!

Attending to an overheating horse Stopping the downward spiral of an overheated horse requires active intervention the moment you recognize the problem.

18

• Get your horse to the shade as quickly as possible • Cool the legs with cool water, starting with the hind legs and slowly moving up to the neck. Cover the horse with a wet blanket or sheet. Make sure to go over with the scraper to get excess water as this collects on the underside and can become very hot. • Do not offer your horse water until it has cool down completely. Often during overheating the swallow reflex can be impacted which can lead to your horse inhaling the water and later developing pneumonia. www.horsetrading.co.za

Keep your horse comfortable in summer • During hot, humid weather, when sweat does not evaporate spray your horse with cool water • Turnout during cooler times of the day - early mornings and later in the evening • Provide enough shade for relief from the sun • Stable fans help to improve airflow and keep your horses cool • Constant access to clean, cool water • Access to salt to encourage adequate hydration • Reduce riding intensity and length during hot weather • Clip horses with long hair coats • Transport horses during the coolest part of the day. Ensure that trailers are well ventilated and offer water frequently. Do not park in direct sunlight with horses inside. Anhidrosis Sweat is a good thing it helps your horse get rid of excess body heat. No sweat could be an indicator of anhidrosis. If the body’s own cooling mechanisms fail, the body temperature can rise quickly up to 41 degrees, in muscles up to 43 degrees within 10 minutes. The only way the anhidrotic horse has to dissipate heat is to pant like a dog, and this is ineffective. To make matters worse, there is no known cure for the anhidrotic horse other than to move it to a cooler climate, so you have to be extra vigilant keeping your horse cool and comfortable. Summer offers perfect riding conditions for you….however be mindful that your horse doesn’t cope well with the heat and you need to plan ahead to ensure the ride is comfortable for both of you.
