Welcome to the 257th edition of The Horse Trading magazine where we strive to unite our readers with a passion for horses.
HORSE TRADING Advertising / Chantel Heydenrych - ads@horsetrading.co.za
Herewith are the highlights of the December 2015 issue. December has certainly crept up on me and so have the unexpected drought conditions that many parts of the country are experiencing. I’ve had to change many of my habits in terms of water usage whilst at the same time keeping my animals comfortable during the heat. On page 18 we have a few tips on how to manage the heat and keep your horse happy, healthy and hydrated during what so far has been a blistering summer. If you are thinking of renovating or building a new arena the article on page 14 is a great starting point in terms of what you need to consider when making this decision. On page 22 we have an interesting article about the possible link between core fitness and the symmetry of the rider and how this can also potentially be a contributor to equine back pain and lameness. Research demonstrates that asymmetrical loading in particular can be damaging to the horse. Lastly I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our readers and advertisers for their continued support over the past year. We hope going into 2016 we will continue to nurture existing relationships and build new ones to ensure we deliver a magazine that provides pertinent equine content. We hope you enjoy this edition. A fresh start The festive season is often a time to wind down and regroup for the new year to come – invariably leading to fresh thinking and exciting new plans. 2015 has been a time of introspection for the Horse Trading team, particularly in recent months. This has led to some fresh ideas about our direction for the next 12 months, and we’re excited to share our vision with you. As we celebrate not only a religious holiday and a new year, we also look to our past; this season marks our 258th issue of Horse Trading, making this publication South Africa’s oldest existing equestrian title. No small feat in an industry that has been marked by turbulence in recent times. We’ve taken the time to look at where we’ve come from, and where we’re going – and one constant link remains the golden thread that has guided our journey all these years: the horses we all love so much. Horse Trading was founded on the principle of bringing together horse lovers, and horses needing people to love. For over twenty years it has been the go-to guide for finding available horses. In the process, readers have also been able to source suppliers of all the necessities of maintaining their horses, from feed and bedding to tack and training. While we have never truly strayed from this principle, in 2016 we will revisit our primary goal, bringing you new ways of sourcing your next ride. Expect to see more advice on protecting yourself as a buyer, as well as protecting your investment; how to ask the right questions to ask when viewing a potential prospect, as well as how to interpret the answers correctly. Whether you’re a seasoned horseman, or are new to the game, we will ensure that information is simple and accessible across a range of platforms. Most importantly, expect to see exciting new ways to view horses and interact with sellers as we take Horse Trading – and horse trading – to a whole new level. Don’t miss our next edition to find out more about how we can help you find your dream horse. 8

WARMEST
HOLIDAY WISHES! FROM THE HORSE TRADING TEAM 9
ANIMALS AND AMINO ACIDS
A
ll animals require Amino Acids, in fact horses require 21 Amino Acids and of those 9 (nonessential) are provided for by the horse itself, whilst the 12 Amino’s (essential) are not created by the horse and need some outside help. A small amount of essential Amino Acids will be obtained from well balanced concentrates and good quality grass and/or supplementation. South Africa does not have as nutritious grass as many other horse countries and common sense tells us that due to cost, horse feed will not contain all the needed Amino’s in the maximum amounts required. Amino Acids also act as a chain reaction, so unless all 12 essential Aminos’s are present, it means nothing, with zero positive nutritional effect.
10
Amino Acids are the ‘building blocks’ of protein and are essential for horses to optimize, synthesize and utilize their protein intake to:
Optimize energy levels Assisted prevention of muscle stiffness, spasms & tying-up Improved food utilisation Increased mass & muscle development (builds ‘top line’) Reduced water loss – nitrogen loss in sweat Assisted lactation & reproduction in brood mares Promotes growth & strong bone Improved hoof quality and growth
We also need to ask ourselves if it is indeed fair to ask all that we do from our competition horses if we do not supply them the tools to preform at top level. All the above information was taken from published reports compiled by the USA National Research Council on nutrient requirements for horses. Written by: L.D Delaney Promix Animal Supplements www.promixsupplements.com
Again feed labels need to be scrutinized for the Amino content and in what quantities, or call the manufactures and enquire.

How do you choose an arena surface?
Many equestrians discuss and want an answer to what is “the best” riding surface. However, it’s important to choose the surface that best suits your needs …and your budget. Equestrian arena surfaces are a major investment for stable owners and with the growth of the sport in recent decades demands and expectations on equestrian surfaces have increased. Surfaces are expected to promote both performance and soundness.
Budget and maintenance Costs are the first point to consider before constructing a riding arena. It is very important to produce a thoroughly analysed budget before starting. Anyone planning a riding arena should take into account: personal resources, soil type, climate, the intensity and type of use of the arena and additional costs such as staff and machinery. Weigh your needs for a grass versus sand arena. The choice of materials and construction should be strongly influenced by how the arena is expected to function in different weather and temperatures. It is important to remember that the final cost of an arena is not only determined by materials and the construction, but also maintenance, including work time and maintenance machinery and expected lifetime. No arena will meet expectations without correct maintenance and the lifetime will be shorter without appropriate maintenance.
14
Water maintenance and drainage Water control is important both to help keep the material moist and to allow drainage. Bad drainage will result in the surface being inconsistent for the horse to move on. A fast draining arena which is made of fibre sand or waxed sand will drain adequately. If grass arenas do not have a good drainage system they become slippery and dangerous for the horse. However, if under watered, grass arenas will become too dry and hard and cause a variety of tendon injuries. Sand dries out fairly rapidly since it drains well, so frequent watering is essential. Some managers add a water-holding material, such as a wood product or commercial additive, to the sand footing material to hold water between watering events. Riding arena surfaces should contain cleaned and screened, medium to coarse, hard, sharp sand. Fine sand will break down more readily into small enough particles to be lofted as dust. “Cleaned” means the material has been washed of silt and clay, making the sand less compactable and less dusty. Riding arenas, particularly indoor arenas, are plagued with dust problems. Dust causes eye and nose irritations and contributes to respiratory damage in both horse and rider. Minimising the amount of dust in this air should be a primary goal in footing material choice and subsequent management.
Whatever the alternative, natural surface drainage or subsurface drainage pipes, the control of water in the surface is at least as important as the choice of material.
Soundness Lameness and back pain are the most common problems requiring veterinary care and leading to loss of use in equestrian sport. When discussing surfaces in relation to performance and reducing injury risk it is important to remember that the way you use a surface is as important as which surface you use and its properties. The body of the horse adapts to the surface used. If the horse is constantly ridden on the same surface the musculoskeletal system is not prepared for any variations, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Training variation means riding on a variety of surfaces, so if you are able to afford it, it’s best to have both a grass and a sand arena available. Even with proper management and regardless of whether it’s a sand or grass arena with the best and most carefully selected footing, materials rarely maintain their good attributes indefinitely. Each footing material and mixture will have advantages and shortcomings. The key is to learn the principles of surface maintenance to successfully manage what you have at all stages of its “life.”

Novice in the saddle There’s a daily stillness at the yard that you won’t find in many places. A skilled rider rises up and down without fail, finding the feeling of flight as her proud gelding valiantly strides forward. With ease, yet with a quietly arched neck. This partnership is hypnotic to watch and has taken commitment to build. Trust, as one advert irritatingly states, is earned. Who am I to share this wisp on an observation with you? I’m not that rider. Just the other day, I blurted out a standard one liner as I walked my much-adored grey gelding around the arena. “I’m a nervous rider.” I wanted to take every word back the minute it rumbled from my throat. Yes, I am that rider but it would be more accurate to say that I am a near 40 year old who started learning to ride horses not even a year ago. I began this quest to overcome childhoodrooted fear of these 500+ kilogram free spirits. I am a girl who is learning to hold Equestrian reins with soft hands and in doing so, has fallen in love. I have tumbled head of riding boots into adoration with the equine experience, and am magnetised by the sensitivity and soul connection power of horses. I have also become enchanted with the predictable rhythm of the yard, as it soothes my racing mind. And, as a PR professional in my prior life hiding out for over six years as a writer, I am learning to breathe again. Really breathe thanks to a trusty and gorgeous flea bitten grey mare and now, my Disney Percheron-Boerperd simply named Bob. Add to that the fact that I am an unconventional mother, whose daughter may read these words one day and think that I lost the plot on more than one occasion. But no matter how unnatural I am in motherhood, I watch with deep-seated pride as my five year old does her ‘up-downs’ with focus and rising trot confidence, at her riding lessons. And, I look forward to what one riding friend pointed out to me as being “the outrides and trot-outs that wait for the two of us.” I sure am no Carrie Bradshaw. There is no city that I prefer over the good old countryside dust angels. There is no slick in the riding boots that I walk into client meetings with. There is just the fact that I’m learning about a world that every day, fascinates and teaches me more than I have ever learnt in a classroom, university lecture hall or at a work desk. In this column I hope to show you just how high from the ground Bob is for this newbie, just how fast (or slow) it is as he rolls into canter, just how hard the ground feels in my first fall, even just how confusing bits and even halters can be. I want you to look through my eyes as I stroke the down softness of a foal’s nose for the first time in my life. I hope too that you will join me on my equine life lessons. There will be falls, I am certain, but there also will be flying from the saddle and I have no doubt that as an equestrian reader and rider alike, you know all too well about both.

Manage your horses’ health during a drought
Several regions throughout our county are currently experiencing drought conditions. These dry spells pose some unique healthcare and management challenges for horses. Drought conditions can take a terrible toll on horses. There is a myriad of considerations to ensure the wellbeing of your horses. Whether it is stress from heat and blowing dust, changing feeds or dwindling water supplies, the additive stresses from drought can cause potentially serious health problems for horses.
Feeding Reserve the highest quality hay at your disposal for your youngest and oldest horses. Senior animals are less resistant to drought conditions, and their younger counterparts require more nutrients to grow. Monitor changes in weight loss or body condition score. Cut back on hay to decrease the heat generated by its fermentation in your horse's gut. Cutting back on grass hay and adding a slice of lucerne will give your horse the calories and fibre he needs without producing as much heat during digestion. Other cooling foods can be fed in moderation, including apples, watermelons, citrus fruits, blue-green algae, wheat and barley grass.
Sand Sand ingestion is more common in pastured horses under drought conditions, because horses graze grass down to short stubble, and tend to ingest more dirt or sand as they try to graze the last few short shoots and roots. Sand ingestion is a serious problem that can lead to colic and diarrhea.
Stress Wind causes stress for horses. Blowing dust can cause eye irritation and respiratory problems, as well as just being a general nuisance. Fly masks not only provide protection from insects, but certain types may also help protect from intense sunlight and dust. Provide adequate shelter and bedding to reduce dust problems.
Hydration A dam or stream used as a water source might dwindle or become stagnant in drought conditions. Monitor water quality in these situations and provide extra fresh water. Horses need to be able to drink deeply during the heat. Keep the water as cool as possible as this will help your horse cool down when he drinks and also encourage him to drink more. Gut health Feeding probiotics daily will support the healthy bacteria in your horse's gut and this will keep the digestive tract functioning well during hot weather.
Hooves Drought can have a huge impact on the health of horse’s hooves. Dry hooves are brittle hooves and prone to cracking. Apply a hoof moisturiser when the hoof is still damp several times a week to help ‘lock in’ the moisture.
Watch the weeds Horse usually avoid eating toxic weeds when foraging, but weeds might be the only green plants on pasture in drought conditions and they are more likely to eat them. Make sure you know which ones are toxic and remove immediately.
Wildfires Be prepared for runaway veld fires. Make sure you have a back-up plan to remove horses in case of an emergency such as a fire. When the heavens do finally open it can cause a whole other set of problems, so be sure to be vigilant in your horse management and care.

A link between core fitness and rider symmetry? “Could exercise, aimed at promoting core strength training, affect trunk angle, lateral alignment and symmetry of the rider?” Presenting at the recent 11th International Society for Equitation Science (ISES) Conference, researcher Alexandra Hampson MSc Equine Science from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at The University of Edinburgh, Scotland, stated that previous research has identified that most riders display a preference for side laterality of the pelvis and shoulders. The international conferences serve as a platform where the latest scientific results into the training and welfare of horses are communicated and discussed. It is a meeting place for academics and non-academics to link science with practice. Core stability refers to an individual’s ability to control the position and motion of the trunk over the pelvis, which it can be argued has the potential to affect control of the body and limbs during athletic activities. The physical influence of the rider is increasingly being recognized as an important contributor to equine back pain and lameness, and research demonstrates that asymmetrical loading in particular can be damaging to the horse.
22
The aim of the study conducted by Hampson was to examine the effects of an 8-week un-mounted rider core fitness program on rider symmetry by evaluating three dependent variables; left-right saddle mean pressure difference, maximum total force of the saddle on the horse’s back, and equine stride length. Ten healthy medium level dressage horse and rider pairs each fitted with an electronic saddle pad, performed two ridden tests at sitting trot, before and after participating in an 8-week rider sport-specific core fitness program. Results from the study revealed that participating in a core fitness program can have a significant effect on rider symmetry and reduce peak pressures on the horse’s back, and consequently, provide an important method for improving equine welfare. Researchers noted that although further larger scale studies are needed, there was sufficient evidence to support the development of evidence-based, sport-specific equestrian rider fitness programs.

Gauteng riders secured first and second places with 21-year-old, Katie Keller winning the 2015 Polo International Horse Trials Federation Equestrian International (FEI) CIC 1* title on her South African thoroughbred gelding, Kankowski and Claire Martin was a close second on a thoroughbred gelding, Mark in Time. The Africa Shield Title was won by South Africa followed by Zambia and Zimbabwe. The FEI 1* Africa Cup competition was secured by South Africa with Zimbabwe in second place. Riders walked away with prizes in excess of R250 000 making this year’s stakes in the competition very high. The event, which took place over the weekend of 31 October and 1 November at Waterfall Polo Estate in Midrand, has become a much-anticipated sporting attraction in the equestrian community. This year’s highlights included the Pink Pony Walkathon for Cansa, the cross-country course, which was designed and curated by Hong Kong Olympics course builder, David Evans, the Polo designer handbag jump, the new Tshukudu Waterhole and the Working with Wood show.
