UNDER-LINE

Embracing sensation with industrial history

Situated under the flyover, at the conjunction between the public realm of Kwun Tong Waterfront and the existing Industrial District of Kwun Tong, the proposed “UNDER-LINE” is inspired by both the linear structure of the flyover and the factory production line to gradually evoke one being on the sensory of physical space and subsequently enhance their attachment to the surrounding details of everyday life.

The design originates and grows from the structural piers of the flyover. The spread out of the “piers” composes the overall linear enclosure of the design, which is finished by semi-circular Polycarbonate and Perforated Aluminum Sheets.

The linear design contained two principal elements- the “Transmission Line” and the “Assembly Hall” . Entering through the confined “Transmission Line'' , visitors would be guided to the “AssemblyHalls” which are curated by different thematic sensory installations. Each “Assembly Halls”are further connected by the confined “TransmissionLines”to allow visitors to contemplate their sensory experience, and get another surprise to submerge themselves into the next Thematic Curatorial Spaces.

The design of the enclosure not only creates separation between thematic curatorial spaces to allow visitors to have a focused sensory experience, but also integrate the flyover structure of Kwun Tong By-pass. Therefore, the proposed Sensory Garden will transform the infrastructure residuals to part of a lively and human friendly urban establishment.

In the curatorial theme of each “Assemble Hall” , instead of purely themed as the general classification of human sensory like sight and hear, it is proposed to introduce themes that could relate to the industrial history of Kwun Tong. By arrangement of “industrial materiality”, visitors would be able to re-imagine themselves being part of the abstract production line with their multisensory experience. At the same time, the overall architectural language of the proposed “UnderLine” would coherently reference some of the industrial landmarks such as Kowloon Flour Factory, thereby embracing the Sensory Garden into part of Kwun Tong Cultural History.

GREyscapE IN ERasURE

The project site is surrounded by industrial greyscape which is countdowned to be transformed. To many of the Hong Kongers, the experience in the greyscape may not be pleasent, but it is the place where they found the direction to the better path. With this inspiration of context, the proposed "UNDERLINE" sensory garden, as part of the enhance works to the public realm of Kwun Tong Waterfront, seeks to be reflective to the historical landscape.

RETREaT aT cOMpREssION

The thematic space is arranged by slabs of various height that would conceal the vision on wayfinding. It resemble the past industrial townscape of Kwun Tong where bulky factory blocks disposited with density. Despite so, there are nurmous pocket gardens for one to rest, they are tresures for the factory workers to discover and relax themselve. Therefore, in the making of this thematic space, resting facilities such as benches are randomly distributed, which would create the contrasts from the compression. It would provoke visitors to sense the retreat from urban hustle and bustle.

CURATORIAL THEME 1

THEENGINEcORE

The curatorial space is inspired by the complex mechanism of the engine core of a production machine. It consisted of soft string and wind chimes grew out from ground and suspended from the top frame. Visitor could touch and submerge into the random sound of chimes to evoke the sensory on the complexity of the engine core.

CURATORIAL THEME 2

THE sENsEOF WaLKING

The sensory of walking Paving materials in the city has been varied from time and place. Other than visual impression, one could also sense their heaviness or lightness of their steps. In this thematic space, various paver materials are introduced to evoke one's sense on walking at different pavers of Kwun Tong, that integrate from asphate road on traffic road, metal deck on construction site, terrazzo in stairway and wood deck at waterfront park.

CURATORIAL THEME 3

THE cOMTEMpLaTE TRaNsMIssION

Moving between the thematic assemble hall, the visitor would walk through the narrow comtemplate transmission composed of curved polycarbonate enclosure modules. The space will express the purity of architecture of "UNDER-LINE", and allow the visitors to refresh the sensatory experience before entering to next assemble hall.
