The Postharvest Directory
Although the confinement due to the Covid-19 virus pandemic began in Spain only in mid-March - and elsewhere within a range of plus/minus two weeks of that date– excluding China and few other countries - , it is sure that the bitter experience will determine our lives in the future, both personally and professionally.
Focusing on the professional aspects, Postharvest.com and Postharvest.biz belong, with their newsletters and directories, to that group of companies that offer services for the agri-food value chain. Especially fruit and vegetable growers, packers and dealers. The closing of HoReCa establishments, together with the perception of fruit and vegetables as healthy food products caused an increase in demand which was met, practically with no exceptions, by the producing companies. Manufacturers and suppliers of machinery, technical services, disinfectants, detergents, waxes, post-harvest fungicides, packaging, ...all joined the growers, everybody working as teams to minimize failures.
Hygiene and prevention are key factors to avoid the spread of the disease and several companies that normally focus on postharvest, diversified their activities to help society get out of this situation. Electronic commerce grew and software, packaging and logistics companies were also able to respond to the difficult challenge.
Postharvest suppliers and also their clients, the producers and packers of fruit and vegetables, knew how to face the problems and make fruit and vegetables available to the Spanish and foreign consumers, despite occasional bottlenecks in some locations.
The confinement brought about a quick and forced digitalization of many activities, such as teaching, sales and many others. The former replaced presence by on-line teaching, the later increasing substantially in companies already using that channel. Other firms not already working with that technology, made the most of the situation and developed electronic commercial channels. The search for information – the core of our activity – almost doubled. Visits to Posthavest.com grew by 110% and to Posthavest.biz by 56%. Users appreciate the value of specialized information, focused on the products and services linked to their searches.

in the year of Covid-19
For many of us, confinement has also resulted in a change in the rhythm of life that has allowed us to address, at the professional level, issues that were often relegated by the pressures of everyday life. The contents of the Postharvest Directory reflect this. Companies have had time to review and update their contents, resulting in a specially updated reference book that we hope will be useful for everybody.
We thank all the companies participating in Postharvest.biz and Poscosecha.com for the support and encouragement of our work that their presence represents.
We wish everyone that overcoming the pandemic, the damage suffered, if any, stays only at the material level. And remain vigilant, do not lower the guard!

Productos Citrosol At CITROSOL, for over 50 years we have devoted ourselves to research and to development, introduction and commercialisation of post-harvest technology and treatments to maintain the commercial quality of fresh fruit and vegetables. We ensure that fresh fruit and vegetables reach the consumer without losses, with all their flavour, with maximum life, at the best moment for consumption. Our ADVANCED POST-HARVEST SOLUTIONS are blazing the trail for post-harvest technologies and treatments: CITROSOL A S UE wax for citrus products, with its low drying temperature, which achieves considerable energy savings and a remarkable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the ZERO SPILL SYSTEM®, which maintains initial treatment effectiveness without generating fungicide suspension residues, the Fortisol Ca and Fortisol Ca PLUS plant strengtheners, hydrosoluble salts of Ca, P and Na that stimulate the natural defences of the product, helping to control post-harvest decay and rind breakdown, and the combination of X3 NEBULIZER + GLOCUAT PC or QUACIDE PQ60 EC, a simple but innovative technology for disinfecting packinghouses. We are currently working on the control of post-harvest diseases in other fruits and vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes. We will soon be marketing an integrated system for washing peppers that ensures the food safety of the product, controls decay in all varieties of peppers and achieves a considerable reduction in water consumption. Citrosol has treated over 200 million tons of fruit (citrus, pears, apples, bananas, etc.), and this has enabled us to offer the best solutions to thousands of customers all over the world and to design new developments in more effective and more efficient postharvest systems. We have a multidisciplinary team specialising in postharvest technology and biology, electromechanics and engineering, quality control, chemistry and microbiology, working in a matrix organization system, constantly alert to detect and satisfy the needs of our customers and society in our area of activity.

Effective disinfecting has never been so easy and cheap as nowadays
The winning combination that CITROSOL has developed: the X3 Nebulizer mobile unit together with Glocuat PC, a “ready to use” biocidal disinfectant. The nebulizer mist behaves like a gas that can reach any area or surface in the packinghouse, and on contact with walls or objects it becomes a liquid with practically total fungicidal/bactericidal effectiveness. The mobile unit allows the introduction of sequential C+D (cleaning+disinfection) programs in all rooms and areas in the packinghouse, with very low structural costs.

CITROSOL has developed a complete line of citrus covering waxes that is also effective at much lower drying temperatures This low drying temperature wax allows energy savings of 60-70% compared to traditional waxes. The amount of energy needed for drying the wax is therefore reduced. Emission of

Excellent efficiencies in environmental Citrosol has developed FORTISOL® Ca Plus water-soluble salts of Ca, K and P that produce greater stimulation of the fruit’s natural defences against active pathogens in postharvest treatment of citrus. Fortisol® Ca has proven effectiveness in reduction and control of postharvest discolouration and in decay control. Fortisol® Ca PLUS has an enhanced efficiency in decay control. FUMISPORE® has excellent efficiencies in environmental disinfection and surface disinfection of cold stores and several items of packinghouses, including machinery, as it is not corrosive or toxic, neither for humans or the environment (the security time is 4 hours). The combination active substance + ignition system can achieve high biocide efficiencies in any area due the high diffusion of the produced gas. Its efficacy in disinfecting field boxes and bins is also particularly high and relevant.

In stored apples and pears , alterations may appear in the form of superficial browning attributed to the stress caused by low temperatures. Among these alterations, the most common is superficial scalding, a superficial necrosis of the skin that affects the first five or six epidermal layers and that generally develops after months of cold storage. Naturcover Conservation Extra, by DECCO, is a natural edible coating, belonging to the Decconatur product line (zero residue products); applied in drencher, delays the onset of scalding symptoms. Tested by Decco and the CSIC on an industrial scale in two consecutive campaigns, and in different varieties of apple and pear, it has been shown to slow down the ripening of fruits and their respiratory intensity and DELAY the development of scalds. Its application is recommended for apple and pear.

DECCOSHIELD® is a foliar fertilizer that contains 60% Calcium Carbonate and is recommended to correct calcium deficiencies. It forms a fine film of particles on the plant which allows it to be better absorbed. DECCOSAVE ZN CHARACTERISTICS AND USES: DECCO®SAVE Zn is a Zinc-based fertilizer that contains carnauba, a natural wax extracted from the leaves of the palm Copernicia cerifera. Increases the natural coating produced by the epidermis of leaves / fruits, forming a protective barrier. CHARACTERISTICS AND USES: DECCOGUARD-Zn is a Zn-based foliar fertilizer. DECCOGUARD-Zn, applied to plants, ensures a supply of Zinc that activates the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of certain proteins. It is used in the formation of chlorophyll and some carbohydrates, and in the conversion of starches into sugars; its presence in the leaf tissue helps the plants resist low temperatures. Scald control without postharvest chemical treatments
In the industry sector of the storage of apples and pears, a new technology called “DCA-CF Conservation” (Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere with the use of chlorophyll sensors) is being increasingly used.
The system, patented by the Government of Canada and developed by Dr. Angelo Zanella, is distributed throughout Europe exclusively by ISOLCELL SpA. This method replaces the static conservation parameters with dynamic ones resulting from the response given by the fruit itself. It uses a special sensor that measures the fluorescence emitted by apples and pears, thereby identifying the minimum threshold of oxygen tolerated by the fruit. The AC conservation takes place at a value slightly above that threshold, dynamically adjusted throughout the storage period. By lowering the level of oxygen in the storage chambers, internal metabolic activity is drastically reduced, which results in a better maintenance of internal and external characteristics defining product quality. Using this technology, ISOLCELL meets the growing consumer´s demand requiring produce free of chemical residues. Another advantage of DCA is the drastic reduction of internal browning in varieties like Granny, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Fuji. And also the exclusion of drencher as post-harvest treatment to apply antioxidants, significantly reduces the percentage of rotten fruits in storage. Due to this experience and to the close cooperation between research institutes, technology companies and customers, ISOLCELL has demonstrated once again to be at the forefront of fruit storage technology. The library works as a collaborative platform for authors where articles, books, essays or papers are presented. Our commitment to authors: Biblioteca Horticultura promotes and disseminates the articles on its weblogs and social networks. The authors assign the rights to articles and documents included in their ‘Author File‘ exclusively or with shared rights to Biblioteca Horticultura. Biblioteca Horticultura publishes under the Creative Commons AttributionNonCommercial-SinDerivative 4.0 International License. The Postharvest Directory, a PDF document, is housed in the BibliotecaHorticultura library. During the last 10 months, 10,491 users consulted it online, and it had 2,284 downloads of the PDF document, hosted at ISSUU. Biblioteca Horticultural library promotes and disseminates the articles through its weblogs (1) and social networks. More than half of the visits are users located in developing countries. The Organizations participating in the Library are corporate partners, research centers, universities, associations, companies, scientific or professional societies. Participating organizations or associated companies or partners pay an annual fee.
