New Postharvest Directory of Innovations 2025

Last year, we made a significant leap forward with the launch of the Directorio Poscosecha de Novedades 2024, replacing the traditional Directorio Poscosecha. This fully redesigned edition marked a milestone, as we returned to print format after years of working exclusively with digital media.

Published in both digital and print formats, the directory’s printed edition was distributed at Fruit Attraction, providing our advertisers with a unique opportunity to connect directly with potential clients. This shift had a major impact on the industry, seamlessly combining the credibility of print with the accessibility and global reach of digital technology.

Building on this success, we are excited to introduce the Postharvest Directory of Innovations 2025—a dedicated English-language edition available in digital format, launching in time for Fruit Logistica 2025. This directory will showcase each company’s featured product or service, complete with a QR code linking directly to their profile on Postharvest.biz, ensuring effortless access to key information for international audiences.

As we continue to grow and expand the reach of our platforms, we remain committed to providing unparalleled value within the postharvest sector. Each new initiative is designed to help our clients stay ahead of the curve and strengthen their position within the industry. Stay tuned as we continue to innovate, connect, and support the global Postharvest Community.

The Dynamic Pressure Management System that ensures perfect airtightness in AC chamber

ABSOGER's Dynamic Pressure Management System guarantees optimal storage conditions by maintaining perfect airtightness in the AC chambers

Dynamic Pressure Management System

Our Dynamic Pressure Management System ensures optimal storage conditions by maintaining perfect airtightness in controlled atmosphere (CA) chambers. Automatic pressure regulation keeps a slight overpressure inside the chamber through automatic micro-injections of nitrogen, preventing oxygen ingress, which can compromise the storage environment. This dynamic management reduces the need for constant nitrogen supply and decreases the operating time of nitrogen generators and CO2 absorbers, leading to substantial energy savings. Additionally, the system is capable of maintaining low oxygen levels (<1%) even in older, less airtight chambers without the need for frequent regeneration of the CO2 absorber's activated carbon. Consistent levels of O2 and CO2 throughout the storage period improve the quality of stored produce by minimizing dehydration and maintaining better overall quality. Our system includes a feature for automatic airtightness testing of CA chambers, allowing users to monitor and maintain the integrity of their storage environment effortlessly.

Advanced Atmospheric Control Technologies

In line with our commitment to advanced controlled atmosphere in cold storage solutions, ABSOGER focuses on Extreme Low Oxygen (XLO) and ethylene control technologies. By maintaining extremely low oxygen levels (between 0.5% and 1%) and controlling ethylene production, our system reduces the need for 1-MCP treatments or complements them when they cannot be used. Lower ethylene levels help extend the shelf life of fruits by reducing the risk of disorders such as scald.

ABSOGER's system is built around several core components that ensure seamless integration and operation. The nitrogen generator provides a reliable supply of nitrogen for maintaining low oxygen levels. Dedicated software allows precise control and monitoring of storage conditions. Pressure sensors and regulation valves ensure accurate pressure adjustments, while safety valves guarantee safe operation by preventing overpressure situations.

Commitment and Global Network

ABSOGER's innovations are rooted in our dedication to advancing controlled atmosphere technology. We strive to offer solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations of our customers worldwide. Our technology is designed to be adaptable to various types of storage chambers, including those constructed from different materials like polystyrene, polyurethane, and block paneling.

With installations across five continents and a robust network of local installers, ABSOGER ensures that our customers receive top-notch support and service. In Spain, for example, we collaborate with TIM Fred to provide local technical support and installation services.

CATsystem®, The First Automated Control System for Postharvest Treatments

CATsystem®, developed starting in 2017, is the world’s first automated control system for postharvest fungicide treatments. It enables the precise maintenance of fungicide, disinfectant, and food additive concentrations in postharvest treatment solutions, within a specific range of values.

In postharvest processing, insufficient fungicide concentration can lead to rot, while excessive amounts may exceed legally mandated Maximum Residue Limits or stricter limits set by distributors. With CATsystem®, fungicide levels are kept consistent, thanks to real-time analysis and adjustments in the treatment solution, optimizing decay control.

Additionally, the system helps prevent resistance development—especially critical when only one active ingredient is used.

There’s no comparable system on the market. CATsystem® is thus a disruptive innovation in the field of postharvest treatments, positioning Citrosol as a global leader in postharvest technology.

Objectives

Citrosol’s goals with CATsystem® encompass multiple areas: leading innovation and development in postharvest care; enabling realtime automation and control over treatments; detecting dosing issues or operator errors; elevating decay control standards; reducing waste and claims, translating to economic savings for clients; implementing resistance control when only one active ingredient is used; and, perhaps most importantly, providing peace of mind to clients.

The CATsystem® offers commercial, environmental, and social benefits. Its continuous cycle ensures precise fungicide doses, reducing product waste, food loss, and treatment costs. Compatibility with existing Citrosol systems enables seamless integration, even with older equipment, maximizing resource use. Detailed traceability meets regulatory needs and builds consumer trust. GIRCLIP, the 100% Plastic Clip from Giró

The 100% Plastic Clipped Mesh Packaging Is Now a Reality

Giró has been working for years on projects and initiatives aligned with its strong commitment to sustainability. Focused on eco-design, the company strives to reduce the environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle, from design to disposal, fostering a circular economy.

To achieve this, Giró invests significant resources in R&D (Research and Development) to offer increasingly environmentally friendly products.

As part of this innovation drive, Giró presents its latest creation: GirClip.

GirClip is a plastic clip designed to replace the current metal clip, enabling the production of 100% plastic clipped mesh packaging. This innovation enhances recyclability and supports a circular economy model.

Previously, clipped mesh bags for fruits and vegetables used two metal clips to seal the bags while attaching a label with product information. With GirClip (100% plastic), the same functionality is maintained, but the packaging becomes entirely plastic-based.

In its initial phase, the recommended maximum weight for bags using GirClip is 1.5 kg, but ongoing improvements in clip production are expected to increase strength, allowing for higher weight capacities in the near future. Additionally, for packers, there is no operational limitation, as the CA-9S/CA-10 GirClip machine operates at a similar rate to existing metal clip systems, producing approximately 35 bags per minute (1 kg bags) and occupying equivalent space.

The exclusive GirClip design is patented in Spain and represents a breakthrough in sustainable packaging solutions.

Hydrocooling, the ultimate solution for rapid and efficient cooling of fruits and vegetables

Using water as a cooling medium, Hydrocooling rapidly lowers the temperature of fruits and vegetables, enhancing freshness and shelf life with customizable, high-capacity options tailored for diverse cooling needs.

The term "Hydrocooling" refers to various cooling systems in which water acts as the medium to transfer heat from the surface of the product to a cooling unit.

In these systems, cold water flows quickly and evenly across the surface of the produce, causing its surface temperature to drop almost instantly to that of the cold water in a short period of time. By applying streams of cold water, either through gravity or forced convection, the heat generated

Cooling and CA

inside the product is dissipated as quickly as it reaches the surface.

Depending on the cooling capacity required, Ilerfred (Industrial Leridana del Frío SLU) offers two types of Hydrocooling: static and dynamic (also known as continuous).

Static Hydrocooling is ideal for cooling capacities below 2,500 kg per hour, providing efficient performance for smaller operations. On the other hand, dynamic or continuous Hydrocooling covers higher needs, starting at 2,500 kg per hour and adapting to the specific demands of each operation.

Both systems are fully constructed from AISI 304 stainless steel, including the main structure and internal components, ensuring durability and resistance. In the dynamic Hydrocooling system, the conveyor belt is made of high-density plastic, optimized to withstand the conditions of the process. This equipment includes all elements and automation necessary for operation, allowing the product to move through the tunnel at a controlled speed adjustable by the user, according to the desired final temperature.

The product’s passage speed through the tunnel can be set between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on the required degree of cooling. Additionally, the product’s exit temperature can be regulated to as low as +4°C, ensuring optimal cooling in a short time.

Revolutionizing Fruit Ripening: Interko’s Ultimo Chambers Achieve 20% Energy Reduction

Cutting-edge Design and Innovative Airflow System Position

Ultimo as the Premier Solution for Bananas, Avocados, and Mangos.

Interko, headquartered in the Netherlands, specializes in the design, manufacture, and installation of cutting-edge ripening rooms for fresh fruit. The company recently announced a further 20 percent reduction in energy consumption for its flagship Ultimo chambers, achieved with the introduction of the second generation of its innovative reversible fans, Reverso.

The Ultimo design and technology have also been enhanced to facilitate pre-cooling of fruit. Interko plans to implement additional improvements later in 2024 as it solidifies its position as a leader in providing the most advanced, high-quality, and cost-effective fruit ripening solutions.

What Makes Ultimo Different?

Ultimo has established itself as the premier ripening solution for bananas, avocados, and mangos.

The standout feature of Ultimo is its innovative airflow system, which ensures that large volumes

INTERKO

Nijverheidstraat 8

of fruit reach the desired ripeness level uniformly. The chamber is versatile, available in one, two, or three-level configurations, and can accommodate various pallet sizes, making it suitable for both small and large operators around the globe.

Chris Maat, Interko’s Managing Director/Partner, explains:

“The unique design of Ultimo, which incorporates a Reverso fan for every pair of pallets, generates a consistent airflow that moves laterally through the room rather than longitudinally".

Maat continues: “This design guarantees that all fruit ripens evenly throughout the chamber and minimizes air loss. By reducing the amount of free air inside the enclosure, we can better control the ripening environment while also lowering energy consumption".

Maat adds: “Our customers, including Fyffes, have expressed that they see no other ripening chamber that can compete with Ultimo. Ninety-nine percent of our competitors rely on longitudinal airflow in their ripening rooms, which leads to a substantial difference in performance.”

IRTA Digital Agrolabs, a tool for the digitalisation of the agricultural sector

IRTA has launched the AGROLABS project with the aim of achieving, through digitalisation, a more efficient, competitive and sustainable agriculture.

This initiative consists of offering spaces for experimentation and testing of new digital technologies, as well as a platform for data and digital services that will be made available to the agricultural sector and other institutions and technological agents.

These are tools that allow data to be collected on the ground and processed on a large scale to help in decision-making and in improving the efficiency of the production chain. These tools can be key to facing the challenge of feeding a growing population with limited resources and the inexcusable need to do so in a sustainable way.

Specifically in the case of post-harvest, an initiative has been launched based on a Decision Support System (DSS) for the preservation of sweet fruit, which aims to find out how to best manage cold storage rooms, and prediction models and risk of physiopathies and diseases in preserved fruit. To do this, one of the chambers located in the Fruitcentre in Lleida has been adapted with all

IRTA FRUITCENTRE

kinds of sensors: temperature probes, pressure change probes, ethylene probes, gas probes at different points in the chamber, anemometers, continuous measurement scales, thermographic cameras, curtains to modulate the air flow, probes in the evaporators, hyperspectral cameras and volatile sensors.

All these sensors will be controlled by software designed specifically for this chamber that will allow the system to be modulated by working with different sensors and at different times or time slots. At the same time, all the information collected by the sensors in this software will be processed with advanced mathematical models that allow conclusions to be drawn about how the different conservation parameters affect the quality of the product or about how the changes that occur in the fruit during conservation, whether in cold storage or in a Controlled Atmosphere, can be known. This ambitious project called CAM. INS (Instrumentalized Chamber) must allow the creation of prediction models and the definition of critical parameters to establish the conservation potential and study how the fruit changes throughout conservation.

Deoxyl Gold, the new ethylene converter with enhanced efficiency

Increasing its performance by 30% and drastically reducing energy consumption

ISOLCELL has developed a new ethylene scrubber, increasing its performance by 30% and drastically reducing energy consumption. Deoxyl Gold has a revolutionary heat recovery system that minimizes the temperature difference between the air entering and exiting the scrubber.

The scrubber removes ethylene using forced air recirculation over a catalytic bed kept at around 250 °C. The process, based on the C2H4 + 3 O2 > 2 CO2 + 2 H2O reaction, is characterized by a very high conversion efficiency of the catalyst, which has been specially designed for this application.

Quality

The superior quality of the catalyst used is proven by the fact that the yield remains unchanged over time, even in machines that have been in service for over 25 years. Isolcell’s DEOXYL line has been marketed for over 50 years and, thanks to the high quality of the components used, they are wellknown to be durable and maintenance-free.

Operating economy

The careful design of the catalytic chamber together with the innovative heat recovery system, ensure that the heat introduced into the cell by the Deoxyl Gold is irrelevant; also, machinery connected to several cells, can be periodically shut down on the disabled cells, reducing energy consumption by up to 70%. This innovative ethylene scrubber also offers a fast heating function, which drastically reduces the time needed to reach the operating temperature and, therefore, also reduces consumption; this function can also run the device based on the real-time analysis of the ethylene in the storage cell and optimize its operating times. The optimization of the catalysis temperature control has further improved the performance of the new Deoxyl Gold, which is the most modern and high-performance catalytic ethylene converter currently on the market.

DVA-V crate tipper to save space and high care of the crates

Automatic Bin Tipper

This tipper is designed for high productions. Its construction makes it reliable and simple, as well as effective.

• Its height is adaptable to any type of bin.

• Extremely delicate treatment of the fruits.

• High productions.

• Reliability

Unstacking and stacking system adaptable to all bins that have input from all four sides. In case of being blind bins on two of its sides, we have several solutions, in order to adapt to these types of bins.

The full bin rotation is performed smoothly until it reaches approximately 175º, to gently evacuate the product.

Once this manoeuvre is performed, the fruit is evacuated from a horizontal conveyor belt, while the empty bin is evacuated to a roller conveyor that will move it to the side, where it will later be turned to leave it for stacked position. After this manoeuvre, we stack the empty boxes, and then evacuate them.

The touch screen for handling it, its safety measures, and the variable speed equipment for evacuation control, make this machine one of the most reliable, productive and most delicate treatments on the market.

The tipper is equipped with converters to regulate its flow and production. In this way, we achieve a constant flow of food, without agglomerations and without gaps between one bin and the next.

The tipper automatically adapts to the height of the bin, without the need to communicate it, neither for emptying nor for turning. More information

53215 Digital Durometers: Non-Destructive Tools for Assessing Ripeness in Fruits and Vegetables

The 53215 digital durometer range from TR. TURONI allows for the non-destructive assessment of ripeness in fruits and vegetables, optimizing the harvesting and storage processes.

Measuring the hardness of fruits and vegetables is a fundamental aspect of quality control. The 53215 digital durometer range from TR. TURONI enables the non-destructive determination of the hardness of these products, providing a valid index to assess their ripeness level.

Available Models:

• MODEL 53215BE: Ideal for very soft fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, table grapes, strawberries, and other products of similar hardness.

• MODEL 53215TP: Recommended for soft fruits and vegetables, such as cherries and tomatoes, among others.

• MODEL 53215TT: Designed for hard fruits and vegetables, such as avocados, citrus fruits, onions, and cucumbers.

This instrument not only helps determine the optimal time for fruit harvesting but also proves useful during refrigeration storage, as it allows

for the monitoring of ripening evolution. Its main advantage is that it takes measurements without damaging the fruit, unlike the traditional penetrometer, which is a destructive instrument.

Advantages of the Non-Destructive Durometer:

• Continuous Control: Ideal for monitoring the development of the same fruit throughout its entire ripening cycle.

• Acceptable Measurements: Allows for measurements in products that are unsuitable for the use of destructive penetrometers.

Easy to Use

The durometer is very simple to use. To measure, just place the tip of the instrument on the equator of the fruit and gradually press until the fruit matches the ring of the durometer.

To obtain more meaningful results, it is recommended to take samples from fruits of several plants in the field or from different boxes in the cold storage. It is necessary to perform two measurements on opposite points of each fruit, approximately in the middle of each side. The resulting value, which is the average of the two measurements, is expressed in Shore, the standard reference for measuring material hardness.
